Im a 58 year old biker, been riding since I was 12, having started on motocross. I was a motorcycle courier for 15 years, and have covered well over 1.5 million miles on motorcycles, including most of europe, usa, south america and australia. I have owned over 273 different bikes in my lifetime and I can tell you right now that the sv650 is one of the best bikes in this class ever made.
I appreciate that input... I'm 50, and have been riding since I was 16.... I'm currently riding a huge 900lbs touring bike, which is fine when the wife and I travel, but I'm looking around for little quick runabout that isn't gonna break the bank.

You know what, I know this bike is as fun or more to ride. Excellent brakes, beautiful blue tank and tail and bronze frame and wheels. Engine has plenty of grunt and will last forever. I love it.
I love how Suzuki has executed this bike. No traction control, no riding modes, minimal electronics. It's truly feels like the Last of the Old Guards. Sad to see this era coming to an end. I got my self this bike in this colour back in April for my daily commute. I sold my Harley last year and was left with my Grom as my daily. I wanted one bike to to it all, didn't want the best middleweight money could buy has winter will kill the value. The SV is more than I could ever need for a commuting but can easily handle a 300-400 mile day should I get chance to get out around family commitments. I come from a background of some really high end bikes and used to race supermoto back in my late teens and early twenty's . This is my 1st Suzuki and its a great bike for the price,I can understand why new riders sway towards this machine. Its very friendly and forgiving and won't bite you if your a new rider. One thing i like the most is the lack of BS rider aids,it has ABS and that's it,no daft launch control or anti wheelie and so on just a basic straightforward classic styled street bike.
I’ve got a 2020 SV650 that I use for my commuter, bang for buck there is nothing to beat it. I got it for £5800 out of the door with 3 year warranty. I rode and compared it with the mt07, Honda CB650 and the new Triumph Trident. They were all good bikes but you couldn’t ignore the character and price of the SV.
My first sv was a 2000 model and then a 2004, I love the vtwin engine, I've had a lot of bikes after but I always think this is the best bike you could get for your money
This bike is the kalashnikov rifle of all motorcycles. It can do everything reasonably well. I've had an fz1 and am now coming back to the 650s bigger brother the sv1000. Lovely machines with decent manners!
There’s a good reason the sv has been around for over 20 years… I had a pointy sv and it totally hooked me. Just a great engine in a capable chassis. I now have a Cagiva raptor 650. Same engine with a few more bhp, brembo brakes, Mc agusta frame. Better than a baby monster.
This is the video that made me buying my sv650 ahahah I just came over to say thank you. The best bike I ever had, pictures and videos trick people between the SV650 and the MT07. Before choosing I challenge you to go and see them face to face. Then tell me something. I felt the Mt more comfortable on the test ride, but the plastic on it, the engine breaking naaaah. Sv 3 years warranty, almost no plastic on it, the original exhaust is lauder, is cheaper and it looks better personally
Simply excellent! This video is very informative as I am seriously looking at the SV650. Among my many visualizations of this model, your video is one of the best! I've been riding for 34 years now. I'm 63, but in my head I'm still 30! Keep up the good work. Thanks a lot!
Love this bike. Did all my training on it, and passed my test with it. It's friendly and forgiving yet easily powerful enough to thrill a new rider's pants off. I couldn't believe how much easier it was to ride than my Yamaha 125. Just a dream. I don't like the way it looks at all but that's just me. Ended up getting a Deauville, which is perfect for me. Dull? I don't think so. Heavy? Yes, a bit. Comfortable and great handling? Absolutely!
I am 50 and got my licence in december 2021. LOVE round light, naked bike and mesh frame bike. I started with CB125R for 2 years and then decided to pass my driving licence. Then fell in love with sv650. I know this is not the top bike of the moment BUT very good bike. I can tell, because i am a fresh rider, that it is as easy to ride as my previous cb125... A little bit heavier but very good !
Im 42 years old and started riding MX at say 14. Ive owned a mad list of bikes over the years (both onroad and offroad) Suzuki being my favourite. Ive grown to love the Vtwins over the decades since TL 1000 so also Looove my Buells but unfortunately in South Africa we only have one decent technician in the Cape Town so although super reliable believe it or not have to wait for days. I still own a 2010 SV650 which I bought brand new and is the only bike I could never part with. It's so long in the tooth and bruised but soooooo dear to my heart I just cant ever picture life without it. 😊
Still the bike in this class I would buy. And the most reliable. Triumph? I don't trust them. You say it's tiny, but it's bigger than the MT-07. Less plastic, too. Great intake roar on the SV. LED lights, nicer indicators, Renthals and a more attractive swingarm: all that is needed. I better get one while I can.
Great review! I had mine (2019 ABS) for over 6000 trouble free miles and i still giggle like EnglishBikerDan when winding it up. I had tried a bunch of bikes, including pricier ones but within a few minutes of a test ride i was hooked and bought it. The MT-07 is great also, but i preferred the SV. The SV feels roomier (i'm 6'2"), and because of its longer wheelbase seems more planted (a bonus on the poor quality roads on much of the east cost in the US). Safe riding everyone.
Not just for beginners, I'm 74 and thinking of trading my R1200R for the sv650, lighter, lower and can ring it out through the gears without getting R1200R radically fast!
@@jamescoll130 Me too! R1200RT, Wonderful to ride, but getting heavier as i get older when lugging it around, and the seat is just a little bit high. Looking at the SV650
I dream about other bikes, but then I fire up the SV and forget about them. It's fun, dependable, and always happy about it. It does what I want it to do every time.
I watched the first half of the video on this Thursday and I bought a brand new one on Friday ❤️ I love the bike and thank you for this video. I paid £5600 0 miles on the clock from the dealership.
Love the way the bike looks. In my opinion it has a nice classic look to it and the trellis frame looks amazing. That being said, they bumped up the price for this year without updating the bike in the slightest. They should have gone with an upside down fork, led lights, and a comfier seat to say the least. Also they should do something about the weight, it weighs too much for such a small bike. If I had to buy one I'd get a used 2019-20 model with the four piston calipers.
While I think suzuki may take it a little too far with the conservativism, one advantage it has is aftermarket support. There's loads of mods and replacement parts out there for SVs, gixxers and hayabusas.
@@saitamathehero7028 Well my point about the looks is separate from the quality comment. I don't know man up close the fit and finish of the monster really shines through up close. Why do you say the Suzuki has the upper edge in quality?
My thoughts about this is that it would make a great commuter, good fuel economy, the narrow bars should make filtering easy, as well as the low RPM assist. Then the reliability of something so tried and tested that comes with a 3 year warranty gives a commuter some peace of mind. Plus it's not a slouch, so you can have a little bit of fun with the V twin on weekends. Those were the reasons I switched to an SV650 from a Triumph anyway. Interestingly its released as a 2022 model as well, I'd hoped for a refresh - LEDs all around, a bigger dash and USD forks like some gold KYBs would set this thing off!
I did my DAS on the 2021 sv and it was absolutely hammering down with rain every day. The bike made me feel so confident on the road. Of course in terms of full sized bikes i have nothing els to compare it to but the bike is so forgiving for new riders
I have the SV650x and I can confidently say its an absolute machine. 0-60 in 3.3 seconds for a cost of £4000 with 3000 miles. To think you'd have to spend tens of thousands for that performance in a car this bike is a gem.
Have 2008 model bought with already 50000km. What a bike! Suspension weak but enough for a 80kg guy. Brakes could be better also but the engine and frame are the stars. So much torq down low, so flick able and stable on bends. Easy maintenance, reliable as a motorbike can be, beautiful simple design. 0-60 almost the same as gsxr750 and power always available at least till 160kmh. I can't think of a better bike for the money even though is not exceptional on anything it is all the bike you will ever want or need unless you race or your ego needs more power
One of the most underrated bikes out there. Quietly keeping up for 20 yrs one of the most tracked bikes out there. Used are sub 2k to be found anywhere. Great all around rider
I'm 5'7 at 15 and I sat on one today at the shop and these things are comfy as hell😂 not on the level as a harley but it would be worth it for the fun factor
I have the 2020 ABS, love the black, but this color combo is nice. I like the bike but hate the seat. MT-07 has better ergonomics for me, and the low-mid torque is better/smoother, but the suspension and brakes are definitely worse. This engine is more fun to rev and overall it feels more like a sport bike whereas the Yamaha feels like a standard that can wheelie really well. SV650 these days is an underrated and overlooked bike. This should be the last year for it before an all new 700cc parallel twin is released.
Great review, I have the 2022 model. Agree with everything you said mate, great bike, good frame, power when needed, just change the seat & exhaust 😉 Ps-2022 model has a slip clutch.
I have the 2020 model and it's a fun bike. I changed the exhaust and went to a 2 brothers racing exhaust. The only thing I hate is the seat. The seat is bad on long rides
This is the bike I used during my obligatory training to get my license here in Norway. I had an MT-09 at home and this during driving school. It felt so small. and much more manuverable at 0-5 km/h because of the predictable clutch and the huge turning radius on the handlebars. My MT-09 was much more jerky and stiffer turning handlebars. Although the MT-09 felt much more solid when driving and leaning. Great beginner bike this SV650 though, very userfriendly amount of power IMO.
Great video Dan, but I guess I'm one of the few riders who hated the current gen SV650. I had an AL6 model & it had a rock hard seat - I mean *serious* pain after an hour, a hopelessly feeble headlight and crashy, non-adjustable suspension. It cornered well enough though & the engine was a gem, but I found myself making excuses to take the car instead, so it it had to go.
I bought a 2020 650x (with flat bars) for frankly ridiculous money as a ‘sensible’ commuter to keep my panigale 899 for fun. How wrong was I … I love the SV. I’ve not had this much fun on two wheels in decades… and it feels like a keeper already, especially if they’re about to ditch the v twin formula..
Im 6’1 too and thinking of getting one, im pretty light though. Do you have any issues with the seat height? since i heard its pretty low for taller guys
You know the thing is just today I was talking to my local Suzuki dealer about getting one of these bike's as my first bike purchase. And here English biker Dan is reviewing the very bike I'm looking at buying. I'm going to take this as a sign from above to get one. Now comes the fun part trying to locate one. With covid messing up everything along with the semiconductor shortage it's been almost impossible to get a Suzuki SV650 or a Yamaha MT 03 or a 07 or 09 or even the 10. And good luck finding a Honda CB650R. Yet I've been able to find a 2021 Kawasaki Z400, Z650 and even a Z900 without much issue. And don't even get me started on the Triumph Trident 660. Most of those bikes have been already bought up. According to the triumph dealer they won't have a Trident 660 for sale till probably January or February of 2022. It seems like all the awesome naked bikes that come to the United states are almost nonexistent right now. So if I can't get a SV650 but yet I can get a Z650 I might have to take what I can get at this point or wait another 6 months to a year to buy my first bike.
Got one 2020 with 76 miles on the clock. Ex demo and I bought with taking my test in mind but am now looking to wait until next year. Thinking of selling for £5,395. Silver tank with blue frame and wheels. Reason for 76 miles is they had it as a demo but the lockdowns meant nobody really able to ride it. I bought it as soon as the shop reopened.
I spoke to my Honda dealer about 3 weeks ago. He said that he would at most only get 2 more CB650Rs this year. That is in Denmark. Im happy that I got mine back in march
I own an SV650 2nd gen. it's my first bike and I love it, upgraded it with a MIVV exhaust and sounds naughty. I don't think I will ever sell it, my goal is to reach 100k km first then 200k maybe haha.. wanna prove SV's known reliability. Good luck !
my 2019 i put hyperpro progressive fork springs and rear shock spring. made the handling a lot more better under braking and cornering. corning led headlight, changed the end can for that v-twin noise and thats about it. do all the servicing myself. after 3 years you'll notice the down pipe looking weathered and brake pistons can seize if you dont clean them 1-2 times a year. poor usual suzuki paint on the wheels etc apart form that a great bike i still use daily. 50 yr old 109 a year fully comp with 4600 agreed value.
i miss my sv650x so much. last year i got accident and its broken and i hurt quiet much but im okay now. but my wife doesnt allow riding agin. nowdays i want sv again ive got experience driven mt 07 & cb650r but my type is sv. most fun bike to drive. i love sv style. exhaust sound... i miss soooo much. jealous you
Whilst that Suzuki 650 V-Twin may not have the 'peak brochure' numbers of some other bikes in that capacity range, it more than makes up for it in character. It's smooth, progressive and doesn't care if you want to lean on the decent (for it's capacity) low down torque or bounce it off the rev limiter time and again. It just does what you want it to do with eagerness and enthusiasm whilst still not burning much fuel. A good example of 'brochure numbers' only tell part of the story. Plus it's almost bombproof with quite a few 'Weestroms' reaching some serious adventure kms without having to touch it. I have a real soft spot for that sweet little twin...
This could unfortunately, be the last generation SV 650 that Suzuki brings out. There is strong speculation, that the next Suzuki 600cc class naked motorcycle will be a parallel twin. I think that would be a mistake, as they would be doing away with a V twin engine and adopting an engine configuration that Kawasaki and Yamaha already offer in the MT 07 and Z650.
Really intriguing if Suzuki just move to one engine design but with a turbo on for more powerful models though. Sort of like Yamaha and their incremental increase in number of cylinders. We'll still have 20 years worth of used SVs and V-Stroms if you fancy a V-twin!
Thats why I think I am buying one soon and saving it as a gem not putting many miles on it. 75 years from now when I am 125 I can be happy about my choice.
Have bike for two years. love it. I bought it to move around the city and with low width she is best. I'm 185 cm (6ft) and overweight (103kg). It is not too comfy for me but bought it to pass traffic and it works damn good. There are few disadvantages of it. First and BIGGEST is sound of chain tensioner on idle. After round 1600km she starts clicking, which make me crazy. And warranty service saying it’s ok. Second that dash is soft, it is easy to scratch surface :-( and missing ambient temp. and oil temp. And the smallest - that it is not teneree 700 :-). Very good review.
It truly is the best bike for a beginner. People buying 300's or 500's are wasting money. Even if you have never rode a bike then find someone with one or take a course before throwing away 4k on something you will grow out of In 300 miles. The SV650 gives you power when you are ready and doesn't when you ain't. And it looks cool
Excellent review. Thanks for doing it. It looks like the perfect first big bike for someone who's 5'8" and wants a simple commuter and weekender. I too wish the gold wheels came with the gold framed model ...
Great review thanks. I think I’m going to get one. Passed my test 4 years ago and went down the CBR600F4i route then swapped for a 954 ‘blade which I love to bits but I’m only using a fraction of its power. The SV looks like bags of fun. Probably should have kept the 600 😳
My 2017 3rd gen had 44k miles when I bought her last year June unfortunately she did at 55k in January due to me getting into a car accident:( but apart from that the bike was everything I wanted even with its 'high' millage she never let me down if you're considering id go for it always used to get complements on the sound and looks

I watched the first half of the video on this Thursday and I bought a brand new one on Friday ❤️ I love the bike and thank you for this video. I paid £5600 0 miles on the clock from the dealership.
Congrats on your purchase! Ride safe!
That sounds like a great deal
I had one of the first of the new gen sv650's and it was an absolute hoot. I do miss having it and can see myself buying one again!
In the early 2000s the frame was aluminum. The steel trellis was a step backwards.
@@aluisious yes and no, aluminium can't be fixed, a skilled craftsman can repair steel.
Keep it simple and stick with the same engines for years, with improvements with each model. Is the Suzuki way.
The best way.
You don't have to think 'remember when Suzuki did THAT in the 90s' because they're just still doing it and incrementally improving on it.
While I think suzuki may take it a little too far with the conservativism, one advantage it has is aftermarket support. There's loads of mods and replacement parts out there for SVs, gixxers and hayabusas.
... and the Yamaha way. Pretty much any Japanese motorcycle manufacturer's way, unless they introduce a new model.
If only there was 800cc version of it!
If you squint, it looks more Monster than the Monster
Yes, but in person the SV is very thin. Our beautiful monsters are big and beefy. Quality is no comparison.
@@alexanderconti521 Lol. I’m afraid the word you needed was perhaps “Looks”. When you said quality that would be apt for the SV, never the monster.
@@saitamathehero7028 Well my point about the looks is separate from the quality comment. I don't know man up close the fit and finish of the monster really shines through up close. Why do you say the Suzuki has the upper edge in quality?
@@alexanderconti521 You prefaced it with “big and beefy” so to me it simply seemed like “looks” would’ve been the word in order. ;) peace out.
@@saitamathehero7028 Good thing we have these fancy little things called periods to separate two different thoughts 🤣.
You are the second reviewer that LOA while riding...I'm sold on this bike...!
I’ve had the pleasure of riding one of these and they are fantastic bikes, nice, simple and bags of fun.
Damn straight, lovely bike! Thanks!
…your opening video skills are becoming very professional indeed 🙂
I love the SV650, a very much underated machine, and good looking too.
Just picked up my 2008 Suzuki SV650 and it only has 2,800 miles on it. Looks factory new. Was always garaged. Can't wait to ride it soon!
Nice one, enjoy your new ride!
I paid £4400 for my 16 plate pointy brand new and still love it. My first and only big bike.
Hahahahha that outtake at the end! Almost spilled my Coffee! 😁 Good morning lads! 😁😁😁 lovely review!
Heheheh.
I had a 02 sv650s a 07 sv650n and a 04 sv1000n there's a reason people love them reliable fun and cheap to buy and run.
I did my DAS on the 2021 sv and it was absolutely hammering down with rain every day. The bike made me feel so confident on the road. Of course in terms of full sized bikes i have nothing els to compare it to but the bike is so forgiving for new riders
Currently riding this for my bike license. Such a great ride.
It sure is dude! Enjoy and ride safe. 👍
It will do 7mph on the clutch alone. I just rode this today for my Mod 1 training. Amazing bike.
Great review as usual and a very professional well produced video from very start to end!
I’ve done my module 1 test on this bike , really good , high revs .
One of thee most Bullet Proof, reliable Engines in all of Motorcycling. !!!
What made me choose the SV650 was that it is such a good balance between sensible and hooligan.
I mean, it's a pretty sensible bike all around but it makes you think you're being a hooligan. Which is the best part!
Just did my DAS on an SV, honestly brilliant bike
Nice one! 👍
I have the 2003 one with burnt copper paint job what an absolute beast of a bike
I remember that colour, my friend bought one brand new.
Thanks for another great review,! It's seem a cracking little bike..I'm 5'6 so this would be ideal..
I'm 5'7 at 15 and I sat on one today at the shop and these things are comfy as hell😂 not on the level as a harley but it would be worth it for the fun factor
I am in love with this bike but im 6’1. You think it would be uncomfortable for a taller rider?
@@Fizzglg were you able to flat foot?
@@s11039858 I don't remember😂
This review is great. Convincing me to get this over an MT07. Still haven’t decided yet.
Both good, watch my next video as perhaps it'll help.... 😉
I loved my SV650, great first big bike and a perfect bike to progress. In my opinion, a great looking bike as well once you change the end can
I have the 2020 ABS, love the black, but this color combo is nice.
I am reading many good reviews of these despite the fact that they have been out for ages. Honda have now aced it with the Hornet.
Just about to pick up my 2022 sv. Black with gold frame, and wheels. Suzuki heard u i think.
Good enough on our roads for any level of rider I have a 2009 gladius love it to bits thanks Ian.b
Great review, I have the 2022 model.
Agree with everything you said mate, great bike, good frame, power when needed, just change the seat & exhaust 😉
Ps-2022 model has a slip clutch.
What colour do you have ? . What’s a slipper clutch please . I’m new to bikes . This is on my list , just waiting for my MOD 2
Sorry, my '23 doesn't have a slipper clutch. No need.
Just bought this bike today, cant wait to pick it up next week
Great video Dan, but I guess I'm one of the few riders who hated the current gen SV650. I had an AL6 model & it had a rock hard seat - I mean *serious* pain after an hour, a hopelessly feeble headlight and crashy, non-adjustable suspension. It cornered well enough though & the engine was a gem, but I found myself making excuses to take the car instead, so it it had to go.
It's a bike that doesn't win any of the numbers games but man is it a joy to ride
Spot on, as I said, ignore the numbers and it's actually a great bike!
I have an 02 and I absolutely love it, only issue I have is I'm a 6ft1 man who's a bit heftier then I should be
Im 6’1 too and thinking of getting one, im pretty light though. Do you have any issues with the seat height? since i heard its pretty low for taller guys
Got me a 2020 sv silver and blue. I love it
Instant thumbs up for "I love you, Mom" :)
Some bikes are worth the wait imo. Just watch some reviews on your desired bike and decide from it. Still, the choice is yours to make.
I'm riding a Suzuki gsxs 125 at the moment, I've been thinking about going for the SV650 for my first big bike.
Great review as always Dan 👍
Sound choice , great bike and coming from a 125 you'll be blown away by the mid range torque of the V twin 😀
@@captainaverage721 I cant wait lol all my friends are on big bikes its struggle to keep up lol
The funniest thing about specsheet warriors is that they don't even ride. And they argue amongst each other in comments.
and they get mad at brands for not launching 300hp bikes
@@mukku36 My personal favorite is complaining about the lack of a gear indicator as if you actually need one if you know how to ride.
my current bike doesn't have a gear indicator but I've ridden a couple with one and it's nice to have
@@lytheus69 true, maybe I am ignorant. I believe the bike I'm renting next month has one so ill report back here.
I own an SV650 2nd gen. it's my first bike and I love it, upgraded it with a MIVV exhaust and sounds naughty. I don't think I will ever sell it, my goal is to reach 100k km first then 200k maybe haha.. wanna prove SV's known reliability. Good luck !
30k km for the moment
my 2019 i put hyperpro progressive fork springs and rear shock spring. made the handling a lot more better under braking and cornering. corning led headlight, changed the end can for that v-twin noise and thats about it. do all the servicing myself. after 3 years you'll notice the down pipe looking weathered and brake pistons can seize if you dont clean them 1-2 times a year. poor usual suzuki paint on the wheels etc apart form that a great bike i still use daily. 50 yr old 109 a year fully comp with 4600 agreed value.
i miss my sv650x so much. last year i got accident and its broken and i hurt quiet much but im okay now. but my wife doesnt allow riding agin. nowdays i want sv again ive got experience driven mt 07 & cb650r but my type is sv. most fun bike to drive. i love sv style. exhaust sound... i miss soooo much. jealous you
Glad you are okay after your accident. Hope you can get another bike soon 👍
Sad news if true.
Now true. It's not being updated, it's being replaced by the GSX-S-8.
@@rleon8339 Not really. Suzuki stated themselves they're still keeping the SV. Unfortunately the GSX-S750 is the one that had to go.
G'day Dan. A good video and comprehensive review. I like Suzuki's and this is a very underrated
machine.
Many thanks!
5:47 that is a world class photo good job
Cheers! Took ages to wait for the right light! 👍
Long live the SV650!
Yaaay, suzuki videos as you promised! 😍😄
Great review though! I always learn a lot from your motorcycle review videos.
Great review and vid. Having moved to NZ, made me feel so home sick for riding on the English country roads. Kent / Sussex ?
Thanks, I'm in Surrey. 😊
See the bike in the rain brings a tear to my eye :'(
This thing was made for all people in all weathers! :)
Good review it’s a nice bike and I would think as you say a good confidence builder as a first big bike with good Suzuki reliability cheers : )
Great review thanks. I think I’m going to get one. Passed my test 4 years ago and went down the CBR600F4i route then swapped for a 954 ‘blade which I love to bits but I’m only using a fraction of its power. The SV looks like bags of fun. Probably should have kept the 600 😳
