The Vintage Read Show Sharing stories from Stephen Barry’s book Royal Secrets!
A sneak peek behind the green baize door that separates the Royal Staff from the family.
In this episode we hear about the Edinburgh ladies who visited Balmoral for 10 weeks each year. As well as an inside glance at the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and the staff giving her a rousing reception. Heartwarming, funny and affectionate tales with just a touch of spice.

The anecdote saying that nobody from outside her intimate circle would ever DREAM of using the late Queen's private nickname made it even clearer how much of a calculatedly insulting piece of disrespect it actually was for H&M to use that name for their own daughter. They knew exactly what they were doing, and how it would be perceived. There is no possible way that they were honouring her by doing this despicable thing.
I hate them for doing that. They are so disrespectful 😡
Your comment is interesting. Dickie Mountbatten refered to our late Queen as 'Lilibet' in one of his correspondences with his mother (if I remember rightly the recipient) when he had decided to push Prince Philip to go for British citizenship to ease his chances of marrying the late queen. Documented in the Mountbatten book .
@@lesleyhogg2495But he was family, wasn’t he?
In fact Diana did a megan and side lined a lot of Charles's friends as well.
Meghan read all the books on the RF. She used that information to her own gain.
Hi Shauna
Michael Parker was an Australian and when he left Prince Phillip’s service he returned to Melbourne and leave on Harcourt Street hawthorn almost behind our home on Barkers road. I remember my parents talking to neighbors about the fact that when Prince Phillip was in Melbourne he would visit Michael on the quiet.
Oh wow! What a cool tidbit 😊
After hearing about Bobo, it’s heartwarming to remember our late Queen had a close friend/confident in Angela Kelly. It may not have been as long, but wonderful that she found another Lady who showed such loyalty and friendship with her until the end of her life.
It is so great to hear stories about the Royals that I haven’t heard before. You find the juiciest little tidbits! 27 minutes felt like 10!
Ah Shauna, it has happened again. Tears running down my cheeks as you spoke about our late Queen Elizabeth II. The sharing of this book is needed at this time with so much negativity and bullying towards the Royal Family and the harm slung at her legacy. She was an amazing woman who loved and cared for the people. Dignified, gracious and strong when needed.
As an American, I regret my disinterest while she was alive & even now, my mother is perplexed by my current interest.
I think it's so ingrained in us that we 'escaped the Monarchy's awful clutches' that we overlook all of the good works done & what a wonderful woman Queen Elizabeth actually was.
@@flyonthewall8122 Thank you for recognizing the good.

Anne, Princess Royal is the LAST of the Royal mystique !! She is the ONLY one left to give us a whisper of the eloquent Edwardian Era of the Monarchy.
Just posed the question about where is she??
Long time to be quiet n I hope she is fine n recovering slowly - she doesn’t want attention so maybe she just doesn’t care for anyone to know , nothing wrong with that knowing her
@@Loobylooto2There has been an announcement about Princess Anne attending her appointment on 12 July ❤
I've watched today an interview with Lady Glenconner. As one of the viewers commented, she is one of the last links to a bygone era 👍 So, here is another one 😊
A wonderful interview btw 👌❤️
That is a good point! I hope she has shared a lot about those days.
@@dutchgram3799 If you are referring to Lady Glenconner, yes❗ She published 2 memoires "Lady in Waiting" and "Whatever next" 😊❤️
forget negative people Shauna, made a pot of vegie soup today so its going to be, soup! soup!
I was sipping soup for the last chat before bedtime. Wonderful peppery pea soup. It's so cold and wet here in the Western Cape South Africa. Schools closed because of the weather. I'm tucked up in bed waiting for a treat!
@@whatsinaname3561that sounds cosy ,it's raining here in the UK as usual 😊
I love soup year round! Julia Child’s Potato and Leek soup is a family favorite. I also have my own recipe for New England clam chowder in the crock pot and it’s honestly the best I’ve ever eaten. Lots of trial and error!
I actually saw a mug in a benefit shop (for cats!) that had the word SIP on it!! If I'd known where to send it, I would have sent it to Shauna!!
Veg soup is so good. I made mine with a Mexican flavor recently. A bit spicy..
Elizabeth and Margaret also curtseyed to their mother the first time they saw here in the day.
Stephen Barry sounds like a real character. Thanks for picking this book. Your review is very entertaining.
I can’t imagine the late Queen ever being jealous of anyone. She had such a strong sense of self why would she?
Embrace the positive, ignore the negative. We all love you and enjoy your work so much ❤
I'm enjoying this book so much. It's obvious that he truly not only loved our late Queen but had the deepest respect for her. 💕
I remember Charles the "action man." I do think it is nice that King Charles seemed to have lovely relationships with both of his grandmothers.
I still tear up, when i think of our wonderful late Queen Elizabeth 🥺🥺🥺🏴🇬🇧
It really is a wonderful book, and you are making it come alive for us. Thank you. I really enjoy the way you present these books.
😘💗
100% agree. Shauna is the real deal
I love hearing all thr behind the scenes tidbits. The comment of Andrew taking swipes at the Corgis is very telling
Does make you wonder whose choice it was for the corgis to go with the Yorks after her late majesty's death.
It’s very interesting that Prince Andrew broke up with Koo Stark over the phone, but he was far too “honourable “ to break his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein in the same manner.
🤥Yes, it was illuminating to learn that poor Prince Andrew was made to acknowledge his greatest character flaw:
he is too honorable.🤭🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Princess Alice (Princess Andrew of Greece & Denmark) was a fascinating lady. She was born with congenital deafness & was later diagnosed with Schizophrenia. To my understanding she did incredible charity work during WW2 and I often wonder if these experiences perhaps gave her PTSD.
I'm not sure if she has a biography, but I think her life was quite fascinating. I'm glad she was nutured in her golden years at the Palace and got to spend time with her grandchildren.
Read Alice, Princess Andrew of Greece, by Hugo Vickers. Its an interesting book
Enjoyed all the behind the scenes information!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Princess Alice hid a Jewish family during WWII in Greece during the Nazi occupation. She was registered as “righteous among nations” in Israel.
She sheltered Jewish refugees in Athens during WWII and was recognised as Righteous Amongst the Nations by Yad Vashem, the Israel Holocaust Memorial.
After the war, she remained in Greece and founded the Christian Sisterhood of Martha and Mary - a Greek Orthodox nursing order of nuns.
She was initially buried at Windsor in 1969, but in 1988 her remains were transferred to the Church of Mary Magdalene, a Russian Orthodox church, at the convent of the same name on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.
She was a very good woman.
I love this book, I really enjoy getting a little peek into books that are very hard to find and a juicy glimpse into the past. Absolutely, a classic ‘vintage read’ book it’s a perfect choice.
So enjoyable…….i find, in these later years, that I am very interested in the RF…….never took much notice before. They represent a pleasing time when the whole nation knew what was what as One. Times change of course but the past certainly was not at all bad.
I can only hope King Charles and the future King William will continue having people bow / curtsy in their presence so they know there is a monarchy and most important before family.
I am loving this, Shauna. The humour is delightful and the author was clearly fond of HMTQ. How lovely for her. She, clearly, respected her staff and hence was appreciated by them. I am so happy you chose this book. Cheers and sip from Canada 🇨🇦.
Such fun. I love it. Fascinating glimpses of life in and with the Royal family.
So interesting and a lot of fun. I love how you delve into a book and deliver snippets full of laughter and sometimes sadness. I won't forget the polyester and Prince Charles dancing with a tent!
Thank you for the laughs! The Royal Family is really just like the rest of us when it comes down to it. Except for the chauffeur's and the chefs, the dressers and the companions and the palaces and the tiaras! Just regular people!
And castles, palaces and stately homes etc 😂
Andrew, not giving staff enough notice, sounds very much like Harry and his attitude about having and to give 28 days notice of his intentions if he wants security. Harry expects everyone to drop everything and bow down to him and his wants as well. They are both arrogant and very entitled 🙄
I'm thoroughly enjoying this Shauna. However ,hearing that story about The Queen's name makes me even more angry about Harry and Meghan stealing it for their daughter. What an awful thing to do to The Queen!! Now I know why she said,'I don't own the palaces or the jewels. All I had was my name, and they took that too.' When she heard about Harry and Meghan stealing her name. They really were so cruel to her. It's unforgivable.
I feel sorry for the daughter. Somebody give her a proper name before kindergarten, please. That’s assuming the old ball & chain will let her go to proper school where she could make some friends, play, and just have a fun childhood.
@maryann6884
Daughters of narcissists have a particularly hard life but can become stronger in spite of it.
Look at Lady C.
I often hope that the rumors are true & that there are no children. After five years, it's becoming rather obvious.
Listening do you is such fun Shauna, informative and enjoyable. I am really really weary of the Meghan and Harry show. So listening to your book reviews takes me to a good place..
I’m really enjoying this book. I just finished Valentine Low’s Courtiers and I think I like Stephen Barry’s insights better.
I loved the story about Heather, the three-legged corgi...very funny! The more I hear about Andrew's horrid behavior the more I wonder how the Queen did not step in to correct his terrible manners. It seems that by turning a blind eye, she was complicit in creating a bit of a monster. It doesn't surprise me that Prince Charles never got on with him from the start. The two are, like the British say, "like chalk and cheese" - LOL!
My personal suspicion is that she felt so guilty that he was born when she was already queen and thus not able to be mother to him in the same way as she had briefly with Charles and Anne that she didn't know where to start with him. I heard somewhere that his birth was a particularly difficult labor and he was nearly lost, so, if true, that may have contributed as well.
@@fibanocci314 That's interesting and explains a lot if true. I realize that mothers love their children, but I wonder if the Queen ever realized what a tosser Andrew could be. Since the Queen's death I have heard many new and unflattering stories about her third born child. It makes me wonder if people kept silent all these years out of respect for the Queen?
@@lisalivingston6473
I have read somewhere that from childhood to teenage, prince Andrew was rude, difficult and entitled but Queen and prince philip used to spend time with him and Edward at morning and evening and in presence of his parents Andrew would behave properly and respectfully with everyone.
He behaved so well that at one point Queen thought Andrew was her best behaved child and staff out of respect of Queen never complained about Andrew to the Queen
@@krishnavyas313Interesting, and if true, it just proves that Andrew has some sense of just how odious his behavior could be...somehow that seems worse! I've never been a fan of Andrew.
@@lisalivingston6473 I think He behaved properly in front of his parents and Grandmother may be because he think of them as above him other family and friends members equal to him but everyone else below him so he didn't care about them at all.
After all he is arrogant, entitled snobb.
Shauna Great stories again! Can’t wait for next episode! Thanks “sip”!
I'm born and bred in Fife, Scotland, across the Forth from Edinburgh. My grandparents had a 2 bedroom ground floor flat. One of those four kn a block flats (they had 9 kids and great grandfather was bedbound too so goodness knows where they all slept. My mum was the youngest)
Anyway, upstairs lived Lesley with her mother. She went away every year to work at Balmoral and always spoke about the Royals and protocol. She was very proud of her job and worked there until retirement. She became a recluse with about a dozen or so cats. There were always loads of kittens running around. I was very young but I remember getting so upset when I heard that it was my grandfather's job to 'get rid' of the kittens. Ugh, definitely different times!
What a delightfully positive person you are! I look forward to listening for many years. Thank you for such delightful content.
yippee !!!!!! I love when you read / summarize books.
What a wonderful recounting…..so enjoying going through the book together 😊 thanks!!
Ooh Balmoral, my favourite! Shauna, You spoil us ❤❤❤
😂 oh my! Poor Heather the singer blasted by the Queen….who was getting onto her corgi-Heather.
😂💗
Too funny😂 poor Heathers!
A 3legged Corgi would be a sight … poor baby
I love these “reads”, Shauna. Behind the scene is so interesting. Thank you.
Lots of characters, upstairs downstairs was a great series.
What a wonderful chapter! I’m really enjoying this book! You make it all so fun and exciting!
I did manage to get a used copy from Amazon. It said it was the last one ….so I checked after receiving mine and yes no more to be found for now. So thank you for alerting me to this very interesting read. Oh and it was a bargain £3 and free postage. Happy days ❤️❤️❤️🏴
Interesting when I got one from Amazon said same thing … last one , mine in the US …. Enjoy 😊

This was such fun Shauna. Great way to start my day with a smile. Thank you. ☺️🤗💚🇨🇦
Love the book! The way you tell the story is delightful, funny, and rings true. So many of theses stories would be unknown or forgotten if we didn’t hear them from books written by those who lived and worked beside the Royals. We think of their life as very grand and comfortable when in fact it is often quite lonely. Stories from the past truly illuminate the incidents in the present.
Thanks Shauna for this second installment of this delightful book.
It's lovely to hear you dipping and out of stories about the royal family...
I Dearly Love Your Programs (SIP) I Love Everything ROYAL, and Hearing Stories About The ROYAL FAMILY ❤
Yay I’m so enjoying this series thank you Shauna 🥰
Great book indeed, thank you Shauna for selecting the juiciest pieces.
You keep me company while I'm bored stiff (and lonely) working from home. I like your commentary, please do more of these series!
Another fun session, I heard a former Royal staff member this week talk about ‘The Look’ from the Queen if you didn’t follow etiquette correctly.
King charles and camilla couldn't marry in church. Yet harry and meg did. Andrew wasn't allowed to marry koo stark because she had done certain scenes in films. Lots of rules broken for megs
Megs 1st marriage was civil marriage and her husband was Jewish, they didn't not married in church.
I bet prince philip regrated saying no to koo stark, she might have been more loyal than sarah Ferguson lol
@krishnavyas313 , I did not realize that a civil marriage was not recognized by the Church of England. Anglican here in the U S and our parish only.allows a blessing in front of the altar, no veils, no.white dress.
@@barbraluce5706 They recognize civil marriage but in civil marriage They don't take Oath in front of God so there is less stigma around it and since 2003 church of England allows people who's ex spouse are still alive to marry another person.
If charles had pushed to get church wedding he would have gotten one but he didn't and in charles and camila's case adultery was involved and that's why archbishop suggested they should have civil marriage and then blessing at church because church can't promote adultery.
@@barbraluce5706 though meg cheated her 1st husband it wasn't with Harry and meg also cheated her boyfriend with Harry but she wasn't married to that boyfriend so Harry and meg relationship don't promote adultery and since 2003 they allows people whose ex spouse are still alive to marry another person there was no problem.
In 1992 Even princess Anne got married 2nd time in church but it was in Scotland in small church.
Queen wanted small church ceremony and Queen didn't like meg's whitest white wedding dress colour.
@@barbraluce5706 in 1992 princess Anne also get married in church for 2nd time, but she got married in Scotland.
Thank you for continuing this book. Absolutly fascinating! I love hearing these very personal stories. I'm sad it is now out of print but how lovely of you to share it with us.
I enjoyed starting my day with this one Shauna - thank you 😊
I love that bobo got her hair done too
I am really enjoying this book Shauna.I hope that you read it right through until the end.
It’s very entertaining.
I remember Bambi Tuckwell, Aussie model. It must be something my mum said about her. My mum was a great lover of all things royal.
Yes the name rings a bell.
Enjoying this book very much, Shauna! I also really like the Housekeeper's Diary as well. These are two of the few books I didn't buy about the royals when they came out and I'm realizing what I missed. On the other hand, it's probably your reading sections and sharing your impressions WITH ME (lol) that makes them special!
Isn't it funny that Andrew broke up with Koo Stark in such a cold manner yet in his disastrous interview a few years ago he said he flew to New York and spent the weekend (?) with Epstein to explain to him why they could no longer be friends. I'm with you on not trusting or liking anyone who hurts animals.
Thanks Shauna 🎉❤ Love it ...
Thoroughly enjoying this book. Thanks Shauna.
Really enjoying this! Thanks Shauna 😊
Adore these old Royal story books Shauna ❤
What a lovely book! I still find myself tearing up when I hear about our late majesty, especially the pet name stolen from her.
Having visited Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, I totally understand what the author portrays about these buildings. Despite its size and beauty, Windsor Castle feels cosy and homely, whereas Buckingham Palace is stunning and austere.
A relative of mine was invited to Highgrove for dinner by the then Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. As it was for 'semi official' reasons, I have never been told what was discussed in any detail, but my relative found the pair such fun and not at all formal.
Yay... Can't wait 🎉🎉🎉
Sounds like Andrew was more considerate breaking up with Jeffy E than he was with Koo Stark. Koo probably didn't realize at the time that she actually dodged a bullet by getting that phone call from randy Andy.
Hi Shauna, Proud to be a Shaunaette! I think I got the last Amazon Royal Secrets. I was so excited when I found it, in the middle of your first review, and was shaking as I pushed the pay button I was afraid someone would snipe before I could push the button. Sip!

This book is truly wonderful. So enjoyable. Thank you!
Thanks, Shauna. Love this series and the secrets revealed.😊❤
I just came across your channel last week and I appreciate that you research your topics. Since then I’ve been getting all sorts of royalty sites. I’m a Canadian living in the US and would like to know who you think are well done; meaning true and investigated.
I find some seem to be good for the first bit and then devolve quickly.
I do not want to listen to drivel.
Rebeca English seems to be well informed; do you think so?
I had a good laugh listening to Bedtime Gossip. The lady who held a cup with her ear in it reminded me of my son. When he was two he had an undescended testicle brought down surgically. Afterward a nurse handed him a little paper cup, wanting a urine sample. He looked at me and then her, shook his head no. His reply followed; juice cup.
Loved this Shauna, thank you!!
This series is wonderful! Thank you Shauna ❤
Yet Andrew inherited the Queen’s corgis. I hope he no longer swipes at them.
He was the one who gifted Queen her last 2 corgis after Prince philip's death because Queen was depressed, Queen was hesitant from accepting them because she thought she will not live long and then Andrew and sarah promised her that after her death they will take care of her corgis. Corgis are with Sarah Ferguson and she is dog lover.
You do a Wonderful job!! No one does it better!!

Stephen Barry might have regarded Andrew as “likeable” but the actions he described, prove he was far from it, it shows someone who is self absorbed and entitled, and anyone that lashes out at the dogs etc demonstrates awful behaviour!

I do wish that Queen Elizabeth had given a handful of interviews. I’m sure they could have been respectful without tarnishing her royal standing. The loss of her historical perspective is dramatic, and a stronger tie between the Queen and her people would have been important.😊

I am sure "Bambi " got a lot of attention. Sounds like the name a girl would have if she worked in a dance hall.
Yes! 😂
No. I worked with a very nice woman whose name was Bambi.
RE the idea of Charles and Diana calling each other darling and whether they meant it. I think they did, in the first few years. Diana undoubtedly was "in love" with Charles. Charles I think of as a whole other breed who was being candid when he said "whatever love means" and I believe this sentiment applied to Camilla as well (Charles always had a roster of mistresses besides Camilla though he was terribly fond of her). How could Charles have grown up in the circumstances he did and not be a narcissist? (And this is not to imply Charles doesn't have a good side nor that he truly seeks to do good in the world--but emotionally? Yes, I do think Charles is a narcissist.) Charles' needs always took precedence in a relationship therefore a romantic companion was there to cater TO HIM. Diana was exceptional when she made the effort to conform and win the ring but she, too, was needy, immature, emotionally damaged, selfish so it's no surprise Charles & Diana's marriage soon combusted. But Diana was such a perfect princess that I think Charles did take pride to have found such a glamorous wife and that he & Diana were really being sincere when they called each other darling like Stephen Barry writes.
Very enjoyable video! Thank you!
