  • A REALISTIC week in the life of a 3rd year UNSW Medicine student in Sydney, Australia. We shadow a colorectal surgeon and head to the OR to watch an endoscopy, complete an audit presentation, learn butterfly venupuncture and cannulas, yap in the student common room, kick back, and of course, study. I've filled this with advice and reflection as a 5th Year student, so you get to see a dual perspective of a medical student on clinical placement (for FREE 🔥).

Would you say medicine is viable for someone with a neurological condition? I'm prepping for the GAMSAT as I'm in the final year of my undergrad but I've got a disability and medicine seems very physical but then I've heard there are disabled doctors so idk whether I should apply or not. Is the atmosphere in clinical placements accommodating etc?

Hi Ila, thank you for your comment. To be completely honest, I’m not sure - this is because I don’t think I’ve met too many people with a neurological condition doing medicine (however maybe I did and didn’t realise) and because I do not have a disability so can’t 100% accurately speak on whether the atmosphere in clinical placements is accomodating. What I do know is the following: 1) there are medical students who have a disability and there are doctors who have a disability 2) students can have what’s called an ‘Equitable Learning Service’ which can involve adjustments to assist with studies and exams 3) for UNSW, we did have UNSW MedSoc Disability Officers 1-2 years ago, so I can try and get you in touch with one of these students if you’d like (let me know; they will probably be much better at answering your questions) and 4) in general, clinical placements will orientate you and should try provide you and everyone with learning opportunities; I personally haven’t had many bad experiences - most of my placements have been very welcoming, accomodating and actively sought me out to attempt procedures, see patients etc. Hope that helps!

@@hellothysworldThank you so much for taking the time to write out such a detailed response. I have an individualised adjustment plan in place while in undergrad so it's good to know this is also a thing for medicine. I would actually appreciate if you could connect me with one of the MedSoc Disability Officers because they would likely be well placed to provide more detailed insights.
I'm glad to hear you're having a good experience and that everyone has been welcoming on placements. Gives me a bit of hope too.

No worries at all Ila - I will try reach out to one of the students, and I will update you soon ☺️ In the meantime, good luck with your GAMSAT prep!
