I purchased a Hurst Competition Plus shifter from Paul last year. He reworked the shifter and applied the tricks demistrated here in the video. I have the shifter mounted to my 1968 toploader 4 speed in a 1990 mustang. The toploader and shifter works great with no chassis mods to the car. The shifter works wonderful and very short throws. I just push straight up for 3rd and the shifter does all the work; very smooth. Thank you Sir.
Paul, you are a legend and your experience cannot be bought. Greetings from Austria.
Thanks for watching!
Just got my order hurst comp plus with bearing and clips and I couldn’t be any happier. The quality he adds to these shifters with his “no cost” upgrades are unbelievable. Also purchased the bearings and clips he offers and they’re well worth $21. Wouldn’t hesitate to buy from Paul again. He goes the extra mile.
Excellent demonstration of to big tolerances vs proper manufacturing.
You would think with all the advanced computer controlled equipment we could hold assemblies to a better fit.
Been a subscriber for a couple years now- Paul, your very sharp when it comes to this stuff.
I'd (almost) kill for all your knowledge...lol
Thanks
@@GearBoxVideo ...Thank YOU for taking the time to film, edit, and upload all of your videos- it can't be easy having to do all that AND run a business.
Thanks also for explaining to us exactly what you're doing to the shifter, transmissions, etc. in your videos. It makes it easier for us to follow along with what you're doing.
😎👍
Thanks again
I'd like to say, I've been an engineer for 0ver 40 years. I've built dozens of engines and restored many classic cars. These videos from Paul are excellent. Thorough and to the point. Very much appreciated !!
Thank you very much!
Well said
Excellent straight forward video. Little small details to correct, but makes a difference in the end
yes, very true
Very awesome brother. My Drag special still performing better than new and it is now behind a 815 HP 540 big block Chevy instead of the 496 I’m always amazed at how easy and fast it shifts and now I know why ! Thanks Paul for all you do . 1968 El Camino 540 BBC DRAG SPECIAL AND 355 gears in a Chevy modified 12 bolt diff .
That is awesome!
An Excellent, Very detailed, High Definition video of a once revered Hurst Shifter of the 60s-70s has cut corners to make more money.
Thanks for showing them their lack of quality control.
Love your work Paul.👍
Thank you.
Once again, Paul, you show us that it is the simplest stuff sitting right in front of us that makes the difference you can feel. Great detail work always. Thank you, Rock Star.
Thanks for that
Awesome job Paul thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it
Another great video Paul! Thank you for what you do and doing your part to keep manuals alive.
Glad you like them!
Great video Paul! I'm kind of a detail freak about my shifters too , and have done similar mods , but you take it to another level. It kills me for what these new shifters cost these days , that they sometimes NEED to be gone over like you did to prevent them from hanging up. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on "blueprinting" a shifter. Great job!
Yeah Paul is good indeed. It looks like I have some shifter work of my own to do and will definately be doing some business with him. Thanks for all of your information Paul!
Remarkable. Completed these Mods on my Comp+ shifter and it shifts smooth. And 2nd to 3rd is awesome. Thank You.
Lookin good Paul sir,
You should have at least a hundred thousand subscribers with the quality of your videos,
I showed up late but have been watching all the videos and found the instruction to be the best by no surprise.
Wishing you well, I did not realize how damn interesting transmissions are.
You Rock sir!
I am a new subscriber, very informative video, no jokes, no BS , someone who knows what they are doing, and it shows.
Thank you
Agree. I am experienced driving manual but not a 4 speed. I got a classic car with a 4 speed something seemed off to me. Asked a average mechanic he said it was fine so figured I was doing something wrong.. after watching these videos and looking at my shifter there was a small issue with it.. problem solved!
It's no longer the same as when Hurst Campbell owned the company in Pennsylvania. quality has suffered since then. My shifter was built and installed by Hurst in their Warminster Pa plant in 1969 and it's rock solid. Never misses....never hangs up.
Shows how a product that we were used to with it's construction has changed so much over the years and that you should never assume that it's going to be exactly the same as the older models. Shifters are indeed an area where the little details that Paul is describing play a super important part. I'm old enough to have had some of those older models from the 70's and even the late 60's and we used to do things that we could think of to make them shift better but not to the extent that Paul is showing us here. What we did learn was that if it's not really close to perfect then you are going to have shifting problems and miss gears. This video shows us all the little details such as checking the thickness of the metal on the main housing and how that affects the side play and how to fix it with custom shims. Now we probably all want to get our shifters massaged by Paul to make them as good as they can be. Thanks for this video and also to let you know that the B-W Super T 10 from my Corvette that you rebuilt for me 2 years ago is working perfectly and I am proud to have it in my car. Mike from Atlanta.
Now this is how to do a great tutorial video. Straight, to the point and no b.s.. Thanks for the tips Paul, this will help me fix some of the issues you describe with my new Hurst shifter. Subscribed.
Thanks for watching
I purchased a rebuild kit with the extra shims from SUPER661, what a difference it made in the way the shifter works and feels. Thank you Paul for making the kit available, great job!
Appreciate it
Such a great video, thanks so much Paul. I love your passion and attention to detail. I wish there were more channels like this on TH-cam.
Great job Paul, the ole' Hurst Shifter ain't what it use to be.
when I'm done with them.... probably better
I’m really happy with my decision to purchase my shifter from you after watching this video. I have the reassurance now when I bolt my shifter to my ‘58 Vette it will perform and be exceptionally smooth! Thank you!
Paul, many thanks for posting your videos. I totally enjoy each one.
Thanks
Paul, I subscribed a long time ago, maybe at least a year or more, and this is the first time your video has shown up on my subscriber page. Don't know what the issue is, I went to your home page and see that you've been posting quite a few. This one was nice, now I'll have to binge watch all the rest. Thanks, j
I think notifications were broken for a long time.
Thanks, that was great to watch!
I'm glad I saw your video today. I have a 75 corvette and almost but one yesterday. I'm definitely buying it from you. Thank you for your awesome videos
Glad I could help
Paul, this is an awesome video that highlights the differences between a made in the USA Hurst unit from back in the day as opposed to the products they sell now with lazy tolerance standards. Good for you for taking the time to "rebuild" these new shifters to work as the designers intended back in the 60s. Your bushing & clip kit will improve the performance even further. All of my shifters have those installed.
A few years back I needed help on a 5 speed ford tranny and after a short phonecall you suggested a few upgrades which I followed through with. Well worth it and much appreciated. Just lately I tackled my 1969 ford toploader and used your video to teardown and install a rebuild kit. You made it easy. Your videos are top shelf...!!!
Thank you for watching
Excellent explanation on the tolerances between shim & gates. I just picked up a pistol grip assembly (shifter & rods) and am looking forward to rehabbing it. This gives me a great understanding of how everything works.
Very therapeutic watching your video! I'm a car guy and I can appreciate your work and dedication 👏
Never knew one could get a ' blueprinted ' shifter.... keep on the good work... 🙋
Just bought my first Muncie, so finding your channel has been a gold mine of info! Thank you for sharing your knowledge🙏
crazy i took the hurst apart and did everything i learned with this video and i actually fixed my problem im on lunch as we speak driving the car with no problems thankyou mr gearbox
As always, great information. It is very helpful to see how the shifters are put together and what to look for when they don't work as we expect.
Excellent video keep it up 👍🏻
Thank you. Please share it
Excellent, I have learned a bunch watching your channel ... THANK YOU for taking the time to share your knowledge and even your business "secrets"!
Thanks
PaulVery Informative Video !! Definitely going to buy my Hurst shifter and Linkage from You !! I have NEVER HEARD OF ANYONE THAT'S SELL NAME PRODUCTS BRAND NEW ,TAKE THE TIME TO MAKE SURE THAT THE PRODUCT MEETS HIS HIGH STANDARDS !!! Thanks Paul for Helping & Looking out for your Customers!! JESSE
Thank you
to bad hurst let QC slide down ( was the 1960's gold standard for shifting/manuals transmission quality in manufacturing ) wonder where the parts are being made and or assembled and packaging ect in 2018-up. side note hopefully the newer TR6060/TR6070 stuff doesn't slide down as well and or mopar-60's stuff
tite/good QC almost win's the race by itself and i though it was mr.4-speed/sox teams practice for perfect shifting and most people cannot do it as well come to find out it's the tool/car helping them win
Paul - you make this best videos, hands down. Thanks, I've learned a ton about shifters, transmissions and clutches (PRI show video).
Thanks a bunch!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support
U call them gates cause that's what they're called. When I first started working as a mechanic in a shop, I was 16 in 98 and one of my mentors that took me under his wing showed me these tricks when we rebuilt a m22 rock crusher.Great video, got a new sub
For 500 bucks, you'd expect all this to be done at the factory... Thank you for the video!
I’ve got a 1st gen Firebird that gets stuck in 2nd gear, and you explanation was exactly what I did to get it unstuck! Great video, and I just subscribed
Great to hear!
Thanks Paul, Hurst has a program where you send in your old shifter for rebuild. But a little bird tells me they're not going into the detail you just showed.
We custom make those shims. I designed the fixes. Some dealers do carry them.
I was thinking a few weeks ago while watching your videos why you haven’t already past 100K subs. Your videos are always on point and factual. No bullshit and no unicorns farting rainbows like most utubers.
I sincerely hope you can make much more than 100k.
Pass the word... Sharing my videos helps
I realise this video is 3 years old. Im in Australia and run an Indy Hurst shifter on my Toploader, im going to remove and inspect my shifter, lately Ive been having problems getting into reverse, I adjusted it by the instructions and it feels great for 1 or 2 drives then it does it again, it wont get past the gate, it all seems tight with no play, im thinking the problem might be in the gearbox, but firstly il remove the shifter and inspect and will do what you have shown, great video. Thank you Sir.
You need to get underneath the car and see what's going on. Some of the top loaded detent mechanisms are very sloppy and it could be that just a reals are not actually going back into neutral and then causing the shifter to obviously not being neutral completely
@@GearBoxVideo Thanks Paul. I ended up removing the shifter completely and rebuilding it, plus i watched some of your videos and also chamfered the gates, cleaned everything and up and greased, while i was at it I removed the extension housing and fitted a new gasket and tailshaft seal because it had a small oil leak, changed the gearbox oil. The shifter now works better than ever. I run a Hurst Shifter in an Australian Falcon GT with the adapter so the stick exists closer to the driver and in the correct position of the console, so while i was at it i filed and made things a little nicer there also. I shouted you a coffee about a week ago to say thanks for your videos in appreciation, excellent information for us all. Thank you
Thank you
Excellent video Paul. Thanks for sharing your secrets.
Glad you enjoyed it
GREAT video! I do this same thing with a lot of things, Holley carbs, SBC oil pumps, Alternators. Basically anything I take apart.
Just got my Camaro kinda on the road the other day for a test drive. I have one of Paul's brand new, rebuilt Shifters.
First time I shifted into third, I thought the damn thing went back into first! It shifted to third so fast, smooth and tight, I couldn't tell what was going on.
This is no joke.
My job is shifting 10 speeds and 13 speeds and 18 speeds all day for 12 hours straight. Ive been driving rigs for 12 years.
The shifter is awesome.
To bad my tranny needs attention with second gear down shifts, but thanks to Paul's other videos on how to rebuild super t-10s, I'll be buying a shop press soon...
Thanks for the detailed comment.
You are a God Send Brother! Thank you for taking the time from busy life to share your knowledge! Its been a tremendous help with our race pieces! #knowledgeispower
Thanks Paul, I will have a look at that shifter on that close ratio ... and I will remember to wire tie it when removed from the trans...
Nice work. Good to see you again!
Great Video! I had a HCP in my 70TA and played with the shimming on the linkage rods and keeping them tight removing the slop but this is doing it right! Great info on how to set one up right! Thank you and I will be using this when I am rebuilding my HCP in my 68 GTO!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
It's almost like they should ship you a batch of 1000 shifters for you to modify as a special edition.
Hurst Paul Edition.
You are the man. Love your videos.
I appreciate that!
Man.... I sure could of used this knowledge in the early 90's with my Muncie and Street Super Shifter
This is the video I’ve been looking for forever
I bought a Competition Plus shifter about 15 years ago and thought it was super sloppy, now I know why. My brother's is a 70's era and feels much more tight in shifting. Also, mine came with a really long shift handle, I feel like it sticks up way to high, which makes the throw really long. My brothers is much shorter, wish I knew what he has, but it came to him like that, already installed in the car so he does not know, but it feels and works so much better than mine.
I always remember my Hurst shifters doing exactly what your rebuilt shifter does. Literally jumped over towards third when it hit neutral position
That is the design
You could easily hit 100k if you upload a little more frequently. I mean youll hit 100k anyway that is just a plain inevitably. Don't drop quality for more frequent uploads though. Love your videos, always excited to see something new! ♥
Very well explained and shown. Excellent quality work here. Thank you.
I literally just finished installing a Hurst Comp Plus shifter into my 1965 Chevelle. Do you make these amazing modifications to a customer unit that I will send to you? Can I send you my shifter? It would be worth removing the entire shifter just to fix EXACTLY the problems that you are discussing. Thanks
@@mikehorning4060 yes , by appointment only. See shifterfix.com
Im so glad I found Paul again. I still have to find a way to contact him. I think it’s time to fix my BW t5 in my 96’ isuzu rodeo. Been avoiding 2nd and have gotten over 50k miles over idk 5-6 years and still works. 2nd just grinds unless i match the speed pretty good while shifting. I would love to see what he recommends as parts. She has over 230k miles on it in PR.
That looks like a fun afternoon project.
Everyone could use a hobby
Great information. Why you didn‘t build your own shifters?
If I had an extra 200k dollars to tool up, i would!
So they started building these in China and now they are crap. Man I am glad I bought one from you. Thanks again John.
The parts are fine. It's USA assembly that's the issue. Nobody understands how things are suppose to work
Paul.....GREAT video. My Muncie is hanging up in reverse. I spent hours! under the car trying to figure out where it was binding. Your video allowed me to get it unstuck in 5 minutes. Now the question is: how do I get my shifter to you for re-build and what is the turn-around time? Thanks again!!
Usually a week. Go here: www.5speeds.com/cart/index.php?route=product/product&path=79&product_id=254
Just installed your shims with help from this video. Thank you. Cheers!
A great video! Thanks for sharing these secrets. I just registered on Super 661 to gather all the goodies to convert my 1968 Camaro to a Muncie M22 manual four speed transmission and a good clutch combo. Paul, is there an estimate when the complete M22U transmissions will become available again?
Hoping this supply issue will start to clear up in mid December
@@GearBoxVideo that sounds good Paul. Would be in time for the next season.
''Beautiful''❗️
he said it ,
he meant it,
and he's here to represent it‼️®️™️
Your Hurst shifter videos are incredibly informative. Very helpful. Unfortunately for me I own a Mustang with the old 3 speed toplader with the Hurst Mastershift 3 speed shifter. I’m getting a 1-2 shifter hangup (same motion as the 2-3 in a four speed). Are the remedies for the 3 speeds same as for those described for 4 speeds? Are the shims interchangeable? Thanks
I don't rhink the shims are interchangeable.
Paul, I am so glad I ran across your videos and website today, they are all awesome and the best that I have ever seen. Love your gaskets as well. I have some issues starting with my M21 and will be pulling it out very soon. I am also going to do your mods to my shifter. Do you sell a shim kit for the shifters?
Wow, thank you!
Thank You Sir 💪💪
My pleasure!
hi paul ive watched most of your videos 2 thumbs up just subscribed thank you
Great job , thanks for sharing 🇺🇸
Yes! That 2-3 issue is exactly my problem - I’ll give you a call soon - perhaps you sell those shims or I can send my unit to you
The power shift I sell I'd in my web store at 5speeds.com. Currently not available until mid Feb
@@GearBoxVideo thanks for the reply! I see your rebuild service as well - I’m in no hurry and would love to send it all to you - I left you a voicemail but I’ll call you next week - thank you so much for your passion and expertise
Lead time is about 3 weeks due to some supply issues but parts are being made
@@GearBoxVideo roger that! Thanks!
Thank you Paul, really good info.
I only wish I could sub to your channel more than once Paul.......
Your channel is awesome. Appreciate the info.
Thank you
After summer so in two months I'd love to send you my grandfather's shifter. I talked to you about 2 1/2-3 years ago and you said you were to busy . Just wondering if you have anytime . This sits on a 64-65 m20 that's in a 56 chevy that I've now had for 34 years so the shifter is from the 70's. Please let me know. Thank you
Paul, please post another video in the near future if you have any downtime to make one, it’s been 3 months and it feels like a million years. Any type of video!
Working on one
Great Video. Learned a lot about these shifters. I suppose this will work on three speed shifters.
Nice mods for upgrades.
Hi Paul. Excellent video. I've been dealing with the sloppy shifting of my competition plus since it was installed back in 2010. This shifter is nothing like a super shifter I had back in the 70's. This comp plus got stuck in reverse once too. I wanted to change out to a super shifter, but I want to keep the console in this car (69 Camaro) and didn't want to cut the tunnel. Since most of the nylon bushings in the rods were pretty chewed up, I installed your Hurst Hardened Steel Bushing and Clip Kit last year. The steel took some of the slop out, but I'm not happy with it. And now that I see where the additional slop comes from I'm going to either rebuild this shifter to get proper tolerances or try to make a super shifter work with my console. What do you think about the possibility of installing a super shifter with the console and without cutting the tunnel? The car is an X55 SS coupe with a SBC and an M22. The car originally came with a stick, so the hole for the shifter is there. But the floor pans and most of the other sheet metal is original, so I've put up with the sloppy shifter because I don't want to cut the tunnel and remove the console. Do you have any ideas to modify the main body of a super shifter and / or maybe use a different mounting plate? Anything you can tell me would be appreciated.
Great Video! Thank you!
Finding first is a pain with mine. It seems like i have a hair tolerance and sweep neutral multiple times before it can fall in. Once its in the up shifts are fine but without downshifting coming to a stop its a pain to grab first gear. Clicks alot while sweeping neutral.
Make sure alignment is spot on and that none of the bushings and springs are sloppy
@@GearBoxVideo Linkage bushings?
Awesome video Paul, I sure could of used one of your shifters back in the day
Thanks 👍
Awesome Paul, Thanks!
superb work xx
Thank you! 😊
Great video paul i like all of your videos alot learned from your videos can you do a video on a hurst v gate 2 shifter rebuild
How much for a unit for a 64 Ford Toploader. You video is very educational and explains why my new competition plus wants to hang up coming out of reverse. Thanks and I enjoyed your video!!!
Contact me. Info is in the video description.
Great video Paul, thank you.
Paul, are the new shifters manufactured off-shore now, met George in the early 60's, he really would help anyone with any problem out, no questions ask.
Parts seem to be made in the US and offshore . Off shore parts are not the issue. People are quick to blame offshore parts as the reason for failures. Most of the problems with the shifters are due to assembly here in the States
Your videos are awesome. Thank you!!!
Well watching this video with my brand new shifter on the bench. I thought it would be good to go, it has been 40 years since my last 4 speed. I got the box for grins and sure enough in the bottom left corner, on the back is says “it will never work” (Made in China).
Obviously I need to do some research to find out how to purchase a shifter from you or a rebuild kit for the one I have. I have an early one with a welded handle. I can find a new handle either.
Video description has my contact info. Read and get in touch with me.
I want buy one of these from you!
Hi Paul your videos are amazing! I just repaired all the slop in the linkage with your bushing and clip kit on my Old Mastershift. Do they or you make or recommend a rebuilt kit for the shifter itself. The one in my panel truck is over 50 years old and could stand a freshen up.
I only ha e kits for the 4 speed shifters. I don't have any mastershift kits. Glad the video helped
