That's a FANTASTIC idea! I was just thinking about creating a Disney version of "The Phantom of the Opera" once I get to work at Disney! This could be another Academy Award winner if it hits theaters!!! It would have like the same vibes as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", with romance and tragedy. So many artistic possibilities!
Speaking of which, I know the best Disney animation directors who'd do the job well: Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise (Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Atlantis: The Lost Empire)
I agree! I also think a Disney version of the Phantom of the Opera is a fantastic idea. It's been a long time since we saw a hand-drawn animated musical film.
This could work but a big part of the phantoms story is that he doesn’t end up with Christine as his “love” for her was an unhealthy obsession, you’d need to handle their story like Esmeralda’s and Quasimodo’s from hunchback of nottredom
I think the reason Disney hasn’t tried a Phantom movie (or Les Mis) is that their Broadway show has become the most well known version of the story. Though phantom did finally close on Broadway recently so maybe now is there chance
Interesting idea but it feels like the plot of the original 1911 novel by Gaston Leroux is missing. In the original novel, the management of the Paris Opera House knew of the Phantom’s existence. To keep him satisfied, they paid him a monthly salary and always reserved box #5 as his personal box But when a new management took over, they didn’t believe in the ghost story so they cut off the Phantom’s salary and sold the seats in box #5. It was only a matter of time before the Phantom would seek his revenge. You got right the part where Christine learns from the Phantom but you left out another major player. That being, Raoul vicomte de Chagny. He is also in love with Christine but she tells him that they shouldn’t see each other since her voice teacher is also The Phantom. She’s afraid for his life but he asks her to become his wife. Thereby putting his life as the Phantom’s next target. During a performance one night, Christine falls through a trap door and Raoul goes after her. Raoul meets the masked Phantom in the Paris Opera House sewers. He asks the Phantom to release Christine but instead, Raoul is captured. The Phantom declares that Christine is his and that Raoul will die after gazing upon the true face of The Phantom of the Opera. The Phantom reveals that he had been causing sabotage upon the Opera House because the new management at the Paris Opera House sold his box seats and wouldn’t pay him his monthly salary so he could keep writing his operas. His face is disfigured because that’s how he was born. Christine shows compassion and as soon as they hear the people of the Opera House coming for him, he releases Raoul.
feel like this version changes the story to make erik more sympathetic, which probably is something disney would do though yeah, I would prefer something a little closer to the original
I agree. This is definitely a messed up idea. The phantom is a demented person with severe mental illness that manipulates people and murders them! Definitely not a hero. The story is focused on Christine and her post trauma coping with her father's death which the phantom uses to manipulate her into thinking he is the angel of music to fulfill his demented fantasy. The good guy, Raoul, is basically shunned by Christine who has sympathy for Erik. In the end that sympathy drives the phantom away and we are left with dead people and sadness.... yikes! I don't see how we can clean that up and not completely change the story.
I agree we should focus on the book version more, but if its interests anyone of you, someone is doing a more accurate version on Phantom of the Opera and let me tell you, there are some things I never knew that makes the tale more fascinating! So if Disney would make this, they better make sure it is very well done, or they will be some very high criticism. It is a beloved tale that most of the world enjoys. Its a lot of pressure for this one. Also two mistakes some forget to add IS THE PERSIAN, also his mask covered his entire face. (Not to offend anyone, but telling my personal opinion)
Exactly. I feel like the creator's video is the same as any other wattpad fanfic that favours Erik for Christine over Raoul and takes away the main aspects of Erik's personality. It could be the PERFECT opportunity, as a Disney movie, that would show kids that it doesn't matter how you look like, it only matters how you behave and treat others. They could see the growth in Erik.
I love the art, and I love the idea of it being of Disney animated film, however, I cannot get behind the plot changes. Not only would Disney get pushback for changing the story to be so similar to Beauty and the Beast, the story is wonderful the way it is and would make a great animated film regardless. The Phantom is the villain of the story for a reason, to illustrate love vs obsession. Raoul honestly loves Christine and wants what's best for her, not himself, and risks his life to save her, creating a contrast to Erik who only wants to possess her with no thought to her own wishes. Christine sees past Erik's monstrous appearance, that is not what terrifies her about him, it's that he's a possessive murderer. Her compassion is ultimately what softens him, and saves her and Raoul's lives, and I think that's such a beautiful message that would translate wonderfully to a Disney animated musical
My thoughts exactly. It would be more interesting if they actually KEPT Erik's original personality, and had a moment like "it's in your soul where the true distortion lies" from Christine, that would make him actually slowly start to realise that he's the one in the wrong and that if he wants to get accepted, he needs to change his behaviour, and that it has nothing to do with his appearance. It would be even educational for kids this way. What this creator presents is basically another Wattpad-dy fanfic that goes "Erik good, Raoul (or in this case the character that stands in his place) bad". I don't want to be mean, but... yeah. For once, keep the stuff that makes the original so powerful.
@@The-Musical-LoverI agree! It was weird watching this because it was kind of like "I can't believe that they haven't made this an animated movie yet, the story is perfect!"...*proceeds to change everything about the story*. This is why no one likes Love Never Dies (sorry for bringing it up lol), because it gets rid of the core of the story. Your point is so powerful "in your heart the true distortion lies" is so emotionally impactful
@@estherhinds6314 For real. I feel like a lot of people who claim they like Phantom actually don’t like it at all because they want to change everything about it 😅 and this creator is one of them. He compared POTO to Hunchback and Beauty and the Beast, and then took away everything that made it distinctive from the other two stories. I feel it ended up just like a mashup between the other two than Phantom. Then again, I watched his other videos and had a feeling that a lot of his “original” ideas were way too similar to already existing Disney films… I don’t want to be mean hah.
Are you an r/c shipper? That's rare to find in this phandom. Anyways, I love the idea of her ending up with the phantom but this takes it a step to far. In the book, Raoul is a naive, obsessed, quiet, often-crying, young man who acts like a child, and is kinda pathetic. There's no way he'd ever be capable to disagree with Cristine, let alone be the villain in her story. It's as absurd as the managers saying Cristine killed mr. Bouquet. (Fyi that was a MAZM: the phantom of the opera reference. Great game totally recommend)
We should create a new gothic romance story about a young woman named Marie who has a beautiful voice and a kind heart but one day her mother is kidnapped by a mysterious man who wants to be loved by someone who understands him and loves him for who he is
Love all the Phantom of the Opera visual development done by Celine Dahyeu Kim. If you wanna see more of it go to her artist web portfolio in internet, it's beautiful. #credittheartist PS: I understand you use her work for this video due to being perfect for the matter but please credit her for the work in the video and the description. She did an amazing job doing this visual development of a hypothetical Phantom of the Opera animated project and she deserves at least to be recognized for her and not only her work be shown. It's not hard to say at least who did it.
Your idea of a Phantom of the Opera movie sounds so amazing. Perfect for phans like me who ship Erik/Christine. If it ever became a movie, I would watch it all the time and it would stay downloaded on my iPad forever.
@@DisneyDudeAndDudette Amazing and perfect video. You should do a similar video about V and Evey from the movie V for Vendetta. I very strongly believe that they should have been together. That they should have had their happy ending. By the way, this movie is very Phantomy. It has so much Phantomy Goodness in it. I still can’t believe that NO ONE has ever reviewed this movie. I was thinking the TH-camr - Phantom Reviews would do it at some point. I even requested it and commented about it. He never did. 😔😢
Dude, imagine that there's a part of Paris that's like a fantasy world where he goes to sometimes with Christine and that's where they meet the friends that help them out with Reclaire! That'd be awesome!
The Phantom has very little redemption arc. Disney wants the "good guy" to be triuphant. Not surprsing they didn't have confidence animating this story and shoving it down our mellenial throats. Still, a very intresting thought.
Thank you for talking about this!💖💖💖 I've wondered about this too. It's not clear why Disney never made their own version of The Phantom of the Opera. This may be a possible reason why: The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is so popular, Disney may worry that their version may clash with the musical or be overshadowed by it. Anyway, thanks for sharing your ideas. I enjoyed the song. If Disney ever makes their own version of the story, I have different ideas for The Phantom of the Opera. I personally would want them to make the movie as mature and dark as the Hunchback of Notre Dame story, mostly for the reason that it would match the tone of the original book. Perhaps by making Erik a morally grey character and a tortured soul, like in the musical. But I agree that the story should end with a good moral.👍
@@throughthelookingglass5973 I agree! Disney should do it but say it’s a different version like all of their stories they usually don’t stick to the book completely.
@@DisneyDudeAndDudette I agree. In fact, that kind of creative liberty can easily make their version unique from the other popular stories. Like bringing back the character, Daroga. It's such a shame that a mysterious and critical character from Erik's background, like Daroga, was featured in only a few Phantom stories.
@@caterinagargiulo The musical might've closed on Broadway, but it's still running in West End and other locations. And despite that, even if Phantom's run in the theater closes permanently, the love for these characters and story will never die. People will still have the expectation from Disney to create a Phantom story as loved as the musical.
Cyrano de Bergerac would be right up Disney’s alley too. When I was a senior at university my senior thesis was about animating Cyrano de Bergerac. It was a bit more about marketing since I was a graphic design major; but I still animated a few sequences and had tons of concept art. I made a CD soundtrack booklet, a DVD package, a cinematic poster, and a few different title logos.
I would REALLY like to see Disney do an adaptation of "The Phantom of the Opera". Your idea sounds like there's a lot of potential plus the song is beautiful. Though, a question, what sort of cutesy comedy relief characters would there be?
@@IndigoDragoness Thank you! I’m posting the full song by itself later for those who just want to listen to it! That is a good point! Definitely need some classic Disney comic relief.
Honestly, I prefer something closer to the novel as it's often overlooked, forgotten by both musical as well as movie format, and is a solid piece of work.
i think that the 2004 version with emmy and gerard did a fantastic job at pulling on the heartstrings ❤ gerard butlers performance as phantom really makes you feel for him
This would change the whole story and the whole meaning of the story. What I mean is, you would tell the "Phantom of the opera", but change the whole topic. But it sounds great too and I would really love to see it. It would be a simplified and lighter version, but perfekt for a disney movie.
That animation design at 1:31 for Erik is DIVINE. I adore all the sharp, angular features, and it has a captivating air of menace. I would empty my whole wallet for a chance to see him in motion in a feature length animated movie.
Okay, personally, i always thought a good adaptation would be a drawn Disney cartoon using the original London cast recording, which does contain the entire production, including the rather limited spoken dialogue.
This was a great concept, and since there’s enough versions of the original story so you could reimagine Erik as more heroic and misunderstood than the original more villainous version. In terms of films I would love to see you consider: - The Hobbit (I think Black Caldron shows it could have worked with some tweaks!) - Odysseus (As something of a follow up to Hercules in a similar vein adapting his role in Iliad and Odyssey) - Moby Dick (Good way of showing obsession and making Ahab a complicated Disney villain)
This really would be a special adaptation for Disney and although my first thought was to have Eric aka the Phantom being the villain, the concept of deformities and handicaps being embraced is even better. I also think your song is beautiful. I would also have the Raul character frame Eric and have a face off at the climax. Overall I think it’s a wonderful idea and a real return to form with love and acceptance being the central message.
Thank you! I’m so glad you liked the song! @@dannybonett8349 YESSS!!!! I love that idea!!! A face off would give a nice action scene and more drama! Love it!
If there were a Disney animated version of The Phantom of the Opera, it could be the most darkly epic animated Disney movie since The Hunchback of Notre Dame. But I don't think it would happen. It is nice to imagine these things though. And who knows?
The original Phantom of the Opera novel by Gaston Leroux is in the public domain and so is the 1925 silent film adaptation of Leroux's novel. Therefore as long as we use original music like the beautiful song included in this video, we technically could make a Disney-style animated Phantom of the Opera film as long as we only use the original novel and the 1925 silent film as source material. All we need is a budget, some filmmaking equipment, a couple of composers, and a cast and we're good to go. 👻
One of the new characters in this version of the phantom of the opera is a young teenage girl named Marie who is the phantom of the opera’s daughter and her story is intrwined with her father
Wow what an amazing idea and all the work you put in the artwork. That is really amazing. This really looks like a it could have been an "behind the scenes" extra if this movie really was made. One side note and I really hope you don't take this the wrong way and maybe you haven't noticed it, but there are 60 "you know"-s in the video. It's bit distracting from the originality, amazing work and effort that you put into your video.
A really fantastic idea (though I do think the characters are anthropomorphic animals could also work in that idea). You know I noticed that not many studios did an adaptation of this Dr Seuss book “Fox in Socks”. What would an animated Disney adaptation of that book look like?
This would be perfect. To finally have a story where Erik and Christine live Happily Ever After. Disney are probably the only company that could accomplish this because they have brought happy endings and brought light to stories that ordinally had darker tales or sad endings. And almost every single Phantom Of The Opera movie or play adaption has a sad ending. Erik dying or sacrificing himself Christine running off with Raoul or Erik sadly letting her go.
So as a huge Disney and Phantom of the Opera fan I can honestly say that I'm shocked I haven't thought of this myself then again I guess I didn't think about it because I don't think a storyline such as Phantom would work for a Disney film. Then again Hunchback of Notre Dame was in my opinion even darker then Phantom but if Disney were to do Phantom of the Opera for their next film I would say that this storyline is pretty good. As someone who loves Phantom of the Opera because of its Gothic Romance a side of me does want there to be a little bit more of that into this plot also for the character Raul to be the romantic interest like in the original plot. But then again we wouldn't want people to see the Phantom as the villain. I don't think Disney has ever had a villain / hero other than in the live-action Maleficent movie the song was great although I do wish there was a little bit more higher notes to showcase the character Christine being an opera singer. Then again I might be biased because I myself am an opera singer. Overall it is a good idea but I don't know if I trust "today's Disney" to do Phantom especially after seeing wish. I still am a huge fan of Disney but more of a fan of old Disney call me old fashioned and traditional but sometimes it's the old fashioned way that makes it work . Thanks for this video and for the idea it's definitely something to think on. And if Disney ever decides to do I can only pray that they do it justice.
But the whole reason beauty and the beast is the way that it was made is because Belle was modeled off Christine and then Hunchback was modeled off of Beauty and the Beast
Disney simply can't handle something like Phantom. They'd butcher it. Some stories can survive Disneyfication, but not Phantom. Phantom is supposed to be dark. And who the hell is this Reclair (or whatever the hell you're calling him)? Erik's foil is Roul, Vicomte de Chagny.
I would so watch this and this would be my favorite. I love the phantom of the opera shows. I love the song. It is beautiful. I probably watched it over and over a couple times. To the point I know the song or songs.
@@DisneyDudeAndDudettethis version of red riding hood includes a teenage girl named rose who was given a red riding hood by her grandmother who is a witch who is actually the one who cursed the prince of the fey into a wolf
I do not like this at all because it has one critical flaw: it completely misunderstands Erik's role in the story. Erik is not a tragic hero or even anti-hero. He isn't a romantic figure. He's the VILLAIN of the story. His relationship with Christine is a toxic relationship built on obsession and control. It isn't sweet, it isn't cute. It's simply not healthy. This version of the story is romanticizing the monster and therefore fundamentally compromises what this story is. The Phantom could be a great Disney villain, giving the likes of Gaston and Frollo a run for their money. But no, let's make him the misunderstood underdog because it makes us real life outcasts feel better. No. Use stories where the outcasts are actually good people for that. The Phantom of the Opera is supposed to be a story about how some people may deserve our pity, but that doesn't mean they've atoned for their evilness. The Phantom is an outcast who is legitimately not a good person. Stop trying to make him one.
He was an outcast from birth. His mother tried to end both their lives before he was even born when she found out she was pregnant with an illegitimate child by drinking acid. He was abused severly and put on display for his deformity caused by his mother's suicide attempt. He barely managed to survive. He had to teach himself to write, which is why his writing is so messy. He murdered his captor so he could be free. Katniss did the same, and no one calls her a villain. His whole life he had been abused, ostrisized, and driven away by people. He was forced to live under an opera house for crying out loud! And then, he actually found someone who didn't see him for just his deformity, she saw him as a person. Yeah, he may have been possessive, but his entire life he'd faced extreme hate. He was extremely scared she'd leave him to suffer in the hell his life was. He was never taught anything like love, how was he supposed to know he could've been with her without being extremely possessive? He was only shown hate, and yet people expect him to function like a regular human being? He's never remembered as the genius musician, magician, architect, and singer he was, he's remembered for his bad qualities (like the fact he murders people and causes major property damage) the hatred and prejudice and greed of others made him just as much as he made himself be the way he is, if not more. He was strong and coped in the only way he knew how. Everyone handles pain differently. Not to mention he probably has some form of PTSD. But nooo, let's all just focus on his love not being "healthy".
@@AubreyWillows you actually just strengthened my case that he's the villain. You can't write off serial murder and property damage as "everyone handles trauma differently." Katniss is a hero because she never let her trauma compromise her morals. Erik did. Katniss was thrust into a situation she couldn't control and was forced to make life or death choices. Erik is a criminal and just a bad person. Simple as that. His backstory is indeed tragic, but it in no way justifies his actions and makes them right.
You know I have been thinking about making my own adaptation of this story, and I have planned for a romantic arc between Christine and Erik, and the comic relief would be the animals who’s close to Erik like sewer animals, animals that people shunned to them? And what dog yo think if I put Madame Giry as a villain and Raoul as Christine’s cousin or sibling acting as Christine’s conscience?
Like bats and rats? I think those animals would be the perfect comic relief. Bats and rats are shunned by people because they're so misunderstood. As for the dog, I'm thinking a Pembroke Welsh Corgi or maybe a bulldog?
Personally, Don’t like the whole idea roul being evil him and Christine were good friends for a long time so it’d be really really odd and out of character for him to be evil in this case. It be better if maybe they fell in love and Christine still has feelings for the phantom in a more Quasimoto sort of way

We should create a new gothic romance story about a young woman named Marie who has a beautiful voice and a kind heart but one day her mother is kidnapped by a mysterious man who wants to be loved by someone who understands him and loves him for who he is
I'd be here for that as long as he learned that kidnapping is messed up and had to fight to be worthy of her

But the phantom of the opera musical closed last year
@@throughthelookingglass5973 I agree!
Did you draw all the animation stills and also conpose, write and arrange the new song? Amazing video!
Okay, personally, i always thought a good adaptation would be a drawn Disney cartoon using the original London cast recording, which does contain the entire production, including the rather limited spoken dialogue.
I always wondered why they never did it in all the years they’ve been around! Like seriously! It’s been something I’ve wondered about for YEARS!
This was a great concept, and since there’s enough versions of the original story so you could reimagine Erik as more heroic and misunderstood than the original more villainous version.
In terms of films I would love to see you consider:
- The Hobbit (I think Black Caldron shows it could have worked with some tweaks!)
- Odysseus (As something of a follow up to Hercules in a similar vein adapting his role in Iliad and Odyssey)
- Moby Dick (Good way of showing obsession and making Ahab a complicated Disney villain)
