One of the most important songs in Hawaii was written by a missionary in the 1800s at the request of a Hawaiian king. As the story goes, King Kamehameha IV loved the music from a Scottish hymn so much that he asked missionary Lorenzo Lyons to rewrite the words and place the new song in a Hawaiian hymn book. Today, this traditional Hawaiian song is typically sung at the end of a public gathering to signal the end of the event. At the end of the song, it is customary to raise your arms over your head to sing the final refrain. This arrangement follows the common version of singing the first verse and chorus twice.
