This traditional Hawaiian song was composed in 1878 by Queen Lili’uokalani, Hawaii’s last monarch. She wrote the song on the way home from a horseback riding trip on Oahu as she witnessed two lovers bidding farewell in a fond embrace. Aloha ‘Oe is the first Hawaiian song to be recognized outside of the islands. This arrangement uses the English line “A fond embrace before I now depart” from Chas. E. King’s 1923 arrangement and omits two verses from the original song.
