      @KentHambrock 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@Karma46819 Depends on where you live and your internet connection. Mostly people say it's not great for competitive games, but I loved playing single player games on it. I personally don't notice the lag at all, but some people have said they did and I'd believe them, it's just not bad enough to stop you from playing games. Unlike the old OnLive network that was laggy as heck.

    • @TD71859
      @TD71859 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Karma46819 For shadow pc its not very noticeable. We have 400Mbps split to consoles and phones. It needs 5 GHz wifi for me, otherwise it gets buggy. Im also in a "test state" that is a ways from any data centers. I can play RTS/4x games with the only issue being an occasional stutter, usually when theres a ton of stuff on screen + dialog sound effects and music. Only happens once or twice a day though.
For xbox/geforce now it works perfect. Ps remote play has some issues but usually only when I have the controller using bluetooth. Wired its not a big issue.

@@MichaelAW17 I own one, the touch screen actually works very well with my note 9. The apps need work and the touchpad is in the wrong place (accidental palm touch about every 3 seconds of typing and its click is terrible, I'm learning to deal with it). I actually like it and since I don't do much with my laptop it's almost completely replaced it.
However that's only on Samsung. It's pretty much useless with my LG g8x thinq. Single cable doesn't work (I need a USB dock to split out the HDMI and USB) and even though I can see that the touches register on the screen they don't actually have and effect (I blame LG for these things).
The biggest issue is that desktop Android is generally terrible. Samsung Dex is usable even if the apps aren't built for it. The more default Android desktop on LG is like trying to use a tablet with a mouse and keyboard, doable but it just feels unnecessary clunky.

I never understand why people would rather say about buying a proper PC or laptop with that $269 price tag. There's only one word I can summarize any PC or laptop at that price bracket: CRAP. At that kind of price, you only get a rather piffling Intel Celeron CPU that can't even handle multiple software properly, even with Chrome OS. Even if you managed to get a used laptop, it runs on a long outdated CPU that is only worthy for Linux OS. So to have something like the NexDock is totally a worthy solution. And it's not like you need to have a flagship-tier chipset on your smartphone - someone has been able to successfully use the NexDock Touch on an LG Velvet 5G, which is a Snapdragon 765G-powered smartphone.

  • @Yurgin764

I could see the Nexdock combined with the raspberry pi 4 compute modell as a great fit. If they could make maybe a slot for the compute modell on the backside it would prolly sell well in the Pi community. I got mine a couple weeks back, it's been great, I've used it for both Samsung dex and for a secondary laptop screen, it's worked great for both. There's only a couple of things I have issues with:
When you turn it on and it shows ready to connect or whatever it says (can't remember the exact wording atm), you can't check battery life, change brightness or anything like that using the dedicated function buttons
I've noticed a lot of accidentally hitting the touch pad whilst using the keyboard, which caused issues with it going back to the start of the line and then overwriting what you've just done
Also when using Google docs/sheets anything like that, it has a weird layout/theme that is definitely a Dev issue and not an issue of the nexdock and does also happen when using Samsung dex on a normal monitor
The reason for the little bump (or so I've heard) is because it's a standard Chinese laptop oem chasis that a lot of Chinese brands use
Additionally, mine didn't come with the mount, but tbh, I've not seen anyone apart from this one have the phone mount

Basically its abilities would scale with your phone and I was hopefully asking if it would scale with your desktop pc like I have for gaming. My point being everything is modular. Cheap Celeron laptops are not at all comparable to Arm devices. Most Celerons laptops aren't good for anything more than light web application. If I could get a decent laptop/cellphone for 700$ I would be estatic. The problem is most software is still not built for arm architecture. When we more fully transition to Arm a "laptop" will most likely devolve into something like this.

    • @KentHambrock

@@gerhardsmith7892 The laptop you could get at this price isn't going to be very usable. Even a $500 Windows PC can't come close to keeping up with my S20 Ultra. Honestly, a laptop that cheap would have a hard time keeping up with my S8.
On top of all that, you have an always on data connection from your phone, all your messaging apps, all your phone's data, ect, but in a laptop format. Dex is far from perfect and either app devs or Dex devs need to work hard on compatibility issues, but when it works, it's damn slick. This thing also has a battery life that would be hard to get on laptops of any price range. And as you upgrade your phone, you lapdock will run better and faster.

@@simster2759 I'm not as convinced on the other arguments - a $300 Windows laptop with an i3-1005G1 is going to run about the same single-core & get outpaced multi-core as an SD865, but its overall functionality would be higher given the multitasking inherent to Windows & the programs available - but I'm more receptive to the latter argument. Having one dock that you slot a new phone into in a couple years to get a better laptop replacement has some merit. If all you really want is a bigger screen so you can write emails or do light document editing, sure. Outside that? I'm still thinking a true laptop holds more value for a similar price. But I can at least entertain there would be a niche out there that this might fill for a select few.

@@instantstupor The majority of computer users are only consuming media and generating light documents. I'm pretty sure there is plenty of room for the price point to come down with economies of scale as well. Combine that most people are limiting their use with advances in cloud computing and it could make a lot of since to just have a large dongle for your phone instead of an independent computing device. I doubt you will ever see something like this with a dock due to the constant changing of phone sizes and shapes from year to year. I could see some things where there is either a pouch and cable management or a more integrated phone holding solution. Also, Apple is already moving towards this with their new iPad and case.

I think where this would really shine is using something like Parsec. Currently, when I'm working on the go, I hotspot my phone to my laptop and run Parsec on the laptop, remoting into my powerful desktop at home. But the thing about Parsec is, 99% of the computing is done on the powerful host device, and you just need a client that can stream video and take peripheral inputs. A laptop's own CPU is honestly more powerful than you need, which drains battery faster. I can see myself just using something like a NexDock instead of a laptop, getting a little lighter weight and a little better battery life than my laptop, and you don't have to worry about the limitations of the Android desktop experience because you're remoted into a full Windows PC.

I do not recommend this device as they will not sell you a new battery when it dies which is unsustainable. This device is supposed to last longer than a laptop but it only lasts as long as the battery is still good.
It was a huge waste of money on a device that can't be repaired even though it doesn't have a computer in it.
For the short time it was working it was insanely useful.
I backed an older version of this device without a touchscreen and it died within a year with little use. It was due to the battery swelling. Nexdock said that they wouldn't fix it for free because it was just out of their 6 month warranty. They would not let me pay to order a battery because of so called shipping restrictions. They only offered me a discount on a new device but I didn't take it.

Motorola was way ahead of their time when they did this with the Atrix.

For a minute thought I was the only one old enough to remember Motorola did this a full decade ago.

I really love this thing for working on my headless servers when needed. or just putting together new pcs for testing before getting them all setup.

These things are great for old people and others that only use computers for light web browsing and maybe a little bit of media where a larger screen is nice, but not required. My dad really only uses his computer for web browsing, so he could completely get by with only using one of these and hooking up his phone.
I really think that this sort of product should come with a user-replacable battery though since this sort of thing does not need to be upgraded unless some part of it breaks.

It would be nicer it you could "dock" it wirelessly, so that you won't have to bring any cords with you.
Just the lapdock and the phone.

That would be so laggy and waste so much battery and you couldn't charge your phone with the thing

If they made a shell like this with a secure slot for the whole phone to slip into that would be great but idk about just having it chill outside the chassis.
Then when I wanted to use a network connected laptop on the go I could slip my phone in and close it up.
Maybe toss a battery in it to supplement the phone.

Razer had one where your phone became the touchpad that was really cool.

8:29 Can't help but think that with tiny design changes and a cute door at the bottom this would have been able to take a RBP INSIDE the laptop. Now THAT would be cool. Same for a phone actually.
