Go stros! Also just bought the best brass mute for trumpet. Professional teacher/ trombonist and brass musician. the best brass mute for tpt is similar to the Dennis wick travel mute in effectiveness. Great products for musicians who need the practice and not the noise.

Willard; I'm guessing you have your Wallace mute now, and I hope you're enjoying it. I use mine several days a week; I travel extensively for work and my Wallace has been a great friend and constant companion. :)
@@JonathanMilam1 ,Thanks again! I'm really happy with it. Never thought it would be that quiet. The adjustable resistor adds a lot of dynamic to the sound. It's actually so quiet that in order to hear the full spectrum of tonal colors I need to play in the bathroom or use a microphone and headset, since the higher frequencies are directed away from the bell and there's more volume coming out of the brass tubing...
Loved the video Jonathan! Personally I don't own a practice mute, but I do find I always have the urge to practice at night and I live in an apartment! Just my luck! Well the solution I have found is using my cup mute and this specific cup mute has an adjustable cup so I can move it closer to the bell for a more muted sound. It is a Mutec brand mute so not the best, but it sure works for me as long I am not playing anything too high haha Keep up the great videos!

Yes you have right the Purviance bbore works great with tight horns .

Thanks Jonathan, did further research and the Wallace mute is the one to get, purchased today from Thomann down in the £40 + mark along with the YTR 5335 gs ii, (6335 with different bell) had to cancel previous order from Yamaha UK.
I have the Wallace mute in my pocket trumpet right now; practicing while I travel. It's been my go-to mute for years and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! And when you get your horn and you've played it some - be sure to share some details! :)

Thanks for the comparison! How would you compare the back pressure on the Tom Crown vs. The Wallace? I prefer the tone of the Crown and am willing to live with a louder mute if it is as easy blowing as the Wallace.
My experience with practice mutes - the quieter they are they more back pressure they have. While the Tom Crown is a bit louder I noticed almost no back pressure at all; it's a great mute. Personally, I used the Wallace when I was traveling because it's smaller and quieter (what a great mute!) but the Tom Crown does have less back pressure. Hi Jonathan,I see you are a Houston Astros baseball fan! Nice joob on your review of silent mutes. I checked the price of the Wallace mute,$133.00 on ebay. That should buy lots of sillence for that do re mi no got,haha. You know what I really do like is the great blue collor of the Wallace mute. Be nice if Harmon made a cool blue hue color mute like that?! Maybe. H&B do have some red&white harmon type mutes but the all blue would be a cool hue! Have a Great day Jonathan:)
John; Greetings! A pleasure to hear from you. Yes, the blue color is really nice, isn't it? The Wallace I have is a great mute and the ones that Adam Rapa demo's look fabulous - but they are pricy, too. I guess we're paying for each decibel reduction, right? :) It's really amazing how in tune this mute is - and I've used it on large bell and small bell horns. Wallace puts out a VERY nice product. the wallace mute definitely the preferred one... but i would probably go with tom crown, simply bc of price
Well said. The Tom Crown is a bit large for a tight suitcase but very nice for home use - especially with its lack of back- pressure.

Theo; personally, if you need a quite mute I'd look for a used Wallace Studio like the one in my vid. I paid $50 for mine used at TrumpetHerald.com in the Marketplace; I've also seen them for $50 on Ebay. New, they usually run $130 - $150. I almost always buy used stuff (trumpets, mouthpieces, mutes, etc.); I just can't bring myself to pay full cost when used stuff works fine for me and it's usually 60-75% less.
Hi Jonathan, can you please tell me, why is it not good to practice with practice mute?
Some practice mutes are much better than others but as a general rule the more quiet the mute - the more 'back pressure's the player experiences. When one gets too used to that back pressure, playing your trumpet without the mute seems VERY open. Endurance can differ greatly, range can be altered... A practice mute, and especially a bad one, creates an artificial type of playing. Bela - great question. I LOVE playing with a practice mute and often do when I travel a lot for work. Then when I get home and play with no mute - I complain, "That trumpet plays WAY too open" (where did all my artificial resistance go??).

I have the Wallace compact , is smaller than best brass and it has the adjustment thing in the front .
Exellent mute and much cheaper than the best brass.

Thanks for posting! By the way, I'm gonna do a vid soon on a Reeves/Purviance mouthpiece I picked up recently, his P6, like the old 6C3. I really like the throat on it - it opens up a tight trumpet. Take care - and pitch in whenever you can.
What do you recommend for my high school jazz band should I get a new mouthpiece my range is only about a note above the top of the staff it is a 1 1/2 c
Jason; Greetings. It's suggested not to go to much smaller with the rim diameter. Going to a shallower cup might make playing higher easier for long periods of time. A 1.5C is a huge mouthpiece. I used to play a Bach 1 - I didn't have much range or endurance either. I'll check out options for a mouthpiece and respond soon. Meanwhile, we can never practice enough. :)

Jason; I've looked but didn't seen anything at the moment. I've bought many, many used mouthpieces at Trumpetherald.com in the Marketplace and at eBay. Wash them good with White Vinegar mixed with dishwashing liquid and your ready to play! Just watch for a shallow Curry 1.5 or a shallow Warburton 3 or something similar and it should help. :)
Do these fit the flugelhorn?
No; a flugelhorn takes a much larger mute, almost like a small trombone mute. Much larger than trumpet mutes, and, sadly, probably more expensive too. A trumpet bell is smaller; so the mute is as well. Great question!
How do you play high notes? I played for years with bad technique i've heard. I just picked it up again after a 5 year break and i struggle alot with getting tired in the lips
Adam, this is a great question. I’m out with family, but I will address your question later today, hopefully. I’ve seen guys with very strange and imperfect chop setups that developed into great players. One word; long tones. Ok, two words. :) That’s the key to warm ups and playing relaxed. For me, lip trills and pedal tones have helped my range. Pedal tones to relax my chops (even during practice) and lip trills after warming up... Well now I’ve gone and shared my thoughts! :) I’ve referred to TrumpetHerald.com a LOT. Google “ comeback player trumpet herald.com “ and you’ll get some great threads and tips. Keep in touch, ok?
I have to add - I'm not a great high-note guy, but between pedal tones, lip trills and long tones, I've gained about half an octave. I do hope this helps! :)
Also, there are different types of muscles involved. Now, I'm trying to build my muscles up for long songs. So, there's always something to work on. There's also skype lessons, if one wants a top pro but there aren't any around. Good luck and keep in touch! :)
@@JonathanMilam1 I tried long tones while doing scales, and i saw improvements quite fast. I can without tongue scale up to the F on the highest line (don't know the terminology) and hold it quite comfortably but going straight up there in songs is a lot harder. I don't press as hard against the lips either and dont get tired as fast, however i sometimes slip back to that when high notes appear in songs.
What exactly are lip trills and pedal tones? (Im not a native speaker) I would love more exercises to help my range

You can actually use a pen or something to push the plug in the wallace all the way inside the tube, for less resistance. That´s how i use it.
I've tried it all ways, and for me, I like it with the stem out completely. But I can't do pedal tones then. :) Great point though; the stem is a very fine feature on this mute. Thanks for posting! :)

After watching this video and ordered TC, I should not have bought or did business with them. Would try Best Brass or just cheap practice mute instead.

@@JonathanMilam1 I contacted them after sanding per the instruction but it still did not stay on. I sanded one round and try and repeated. From what I see it's a bit too wide and too shallow in. Did not fit my Yamaha but Carolbrass. It can be my fault. However, I got replies that I never saw from any vendors - very rude. I really like your video so would like to try. Anyway I will stick with Silent brass and $9.99 mute. Waiting for Denise Wick to come.
I'm sorry to hear this. I've not had any problems with the Tom Crown at all. Bummer. I haven't tried the Dennis Wick, I've got a Silent Brass I need to sell, frankly. Nice piece, but I bought it to review and, come to think of it, I haven't reviewed the new one I got. Good reminder. I appreciate your comments, though. If a vendor is rude - share the knowledge. Volume did turn out low on several vids. Earphones or headphones help the volume tremendously.
