Step 1. Invest all of your money into a variety of mouthpieces
Step 2. Try each of them for extended amounts of time
Step 3. Select the one you like
Step 4. Try not to notice your bank account is empty, your wife and children have left you, and that your jazzy trumpet playing was never going to provide any stability for a modern family anyway.

Yeah, they've gotten expensive. I remember they(Bach mouthpieces) were $12.99 in the early to mid 80's now theyre $50 or more, but they let you try them out before buying.

    Hi Brae,
Very interesting and very informative with very good sound advice. You got my attention as soon as you mentioned the Bach #3 because that is exactly what I use and have done for some years. However I have enlarged the throat of mine out to a much larger bore to improve my blow rather than change mouthpieces. I have done this to several #3's in many different throat sizes so that I can properly compare them. In the early 1900's this was a common practice and even Vincent Bach did this for his custom mouthpiece customers. Even after Bach started manufacturing his big range of mouthpieces, he chose the drill size of #27 as a pilot hole and would ream them out according to his customers needs. His mouthpieces became so popular that buyers of his mouthpieces and not knowing about this art of adjusting the throat just accepted them as they were.
I see that David Monette is using much larger throat sizes (#18- #22) and I believe personally that this is one of the main benefits of his very expensive mouthpieces. A very good reason for not ignoring history and accepting that "Everything is old is new again" As the count would put on the end "Clink, Clink" Thanks again for your enjoyable video. Richard Autenzio.
PS. Chris Botti's old Bach #3 Mouthpiece from the 30's has it throat enlarged to a #15.

My windsor trumpet came with a 7C mouthpiece and it works fine. When I looked at trumpet mouthpieces I found they cost almost as much as my trumpet did!

We trumpet players probably overestimate the difference of sound to the listener He is blessed with lips that don't go far into the mouthpiece I think because even his F mpc still sounds just as free blowing while for many there would be bottoming out. I would say as listener to go for what is plays well and is most comfortable to the player. Those little timbre differences seem suddenly overrated as to me as older player.

    Thanks for doing the vid.
My brother has just loaned me a Jupiter trumpet with 1c mouthpiece. I haven't played since about 1963 (used to play cornet for about 5 years in bras bands), and although fit and well, I'm now 67.
I'd like to see if I can resume playing a bit with a sax player friend. I'm looking for the easiest mouthpiece I can get. Is the 1c about as easy as they get?
He said a cornet is easier than a trumpet. Should I switch to cornet? (I love the trumpet sound and look and all its history.)

Really great. I already have a 7B, C, EW and will get a 3C Rich sound (heavy) for practicing. I'm thinking about getting a 7C Rich sound (heavy)
Do you have any experience on the heavy mouthpieces?
Ps: I prefer the shallower one for high notes, obviously... but mainly because it is EW, it has a wider rim allowing me to put more pressure on my mouth and making high notes easier;)

  • @1976kinggoldenflair

Very good info. The only problem is that even in those Bach 3 sizes. None have the same rim design. At least I have read as such. If all had the same newer Bach 3C or Mount Vernon 3C rim. The comfort part could be solved also. Seems the non Mount Vernon ,10 1/2 C/ Bach 3C/ 1 1/2C along with the 1 1/2 B Bach have the more comfortable rims. Not sure how these sizes would pan out in the older 1920//1930's mount Vernon versions.

What about going all the way deep with an A cup? Bach numbers the smaller they are the bigger the mouthpiece. A 1A is the biggest mouthpiece they make. 10-1/2C is pretty popular. Bob O'donnell of Hanna Barbera cartoons, Ice Follies and tons of studio work in LA plays that or a facsimile of it. Also Rafael Mendez on that according to his son Robert who I met a few years ago.

So I'm a weirdo and am going from trombone and euphonium to trumpet or cornet. Id love a mouthpiece that makes it easier to switch between these instruments. A 1c sound about right? I also play sax and flute so getting a similar enough mouth piece size would help greatly. Thanks for any input.

Same here, I switch back and forth between my Trombone and Trumpet often, especially during practice sessions. I am trying to find something that makes and easier transition. If I play my Trombone first its so weird going to the smaller mouthpiece. Doesn't bother me as much if I play the trumpet first
