If anything, you're completely right. This map is always the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the classic Doom's! It's the most fun one they've made through Doom and Doom 2 if you ask me!
Also, I've discovered just how amazing this map is recently. It's so well thought out. Emulating it in any sort of fashion is rather tough to recreate new "traps" to make a sequel ;)
If someone were to make a sequel to this map, it'd be pretty challenging to pull off, considering they'd have to come up with classic traps set in a new light. But I can think of a person who may be able to pull that off. ;)
Man i wish you knew just how much you helped me through a very very tough time I can’t even play doom anymore without you playing along side me through your walkthroughs thank you man
Ahh....the Baron of Hell....my personal favorite monster!....He's just a total force to be reckoned with!.... I like hacking them up with the chainsaw (if they don't slash my ass in half first that is,)....It's unnecessarily risky, but ultimately a triumphant feeling when you succeed!....I highly recommend you try it sometime since you're obviously adroit enough at this game to pull it off!....
I used to watch your vids for half life, very entertaining and helpful for my favorite game. Today i just bought doom II because i cant play my third again and now im reunited with your channel. I think your vids dont get enough recognition, but hey maybe its for the best. thank you and take care
At the end, going into the cacodemon room, the teleporter to the right just takes you back to the room where the red key was. Once you step on the first pillar in the red-door room (and quickly step back) another teleporter opens up across from the one in the cacodemon room. That's the one that takes you to the exit room.
Map 9 the pits is one that really makes you fight to survive. There's never a dull moment. BTW I hat the pain elementals, soul spheres, revenants and expecially the Archfucker.
Yup. Found out the hard way. (I should have read the comments before lol 😂😂) I didn't find a second teleporter, at least in the version that I have on the PC, so I guess that is one of the differences between the different versions of doom 2
One teleporters take you back to the red key area with all those imps and the two barons. to see the second teleporter, you need to step ON THE FIRST lowering step and run backward quickly. that second teleporter will bring you to the exit.
Great video series, I was literally just playing through using this video and I fell right at the end, I then accidentally pressed save game instead of load game and I just erased hours of work. I’m mad but excited to watch the videos again😂
You could also get the BFG first and then use it in the Imp room. The teleporter that you talked about at the end is not the one that opens up when you step on the first platform, it's the teleporter opposite that teleporter. The first one is opened up from the beggining (as you could see, because you haven't steped on the platform and it was already opened) and it takes you somewhere else (I think it's the Imp room). I'm also excited so much for Altima's stream, but I won't be able to watch the whole thing, because I have to go to the work, so I will watch as much as I will be able. Also you forgot to give me to shout-out about my Brutal Doom II playthrough :-P
Ah, thank you. I will put that teleporter information as an annotation. When I was recording the Walkthrough, even I was kinda confused as to why the teleporter was already open when I hadn't stepped on that platform yet, but now I know. Since I didn't want the intro to this video to be too long (I wanted to get Altima's livestream mention out there as soon as I could), I have a couple more shout-outs reserved for the next video. So yeah.
In the room with all the Pain Elementals, if you go back into the teleporter a couple times it will take you to the raised platform in that room. There's not much up there. Some medi-kits and maybe some ammo, but it's fun to be able to get up there.
Oh BMD, how simple this map is when I watch your videos....back then as a kid when I played it, i remember getting screwed over and over again in this map....God I love your videos
One of the best maps in DooM, the only critisism i got for it is that there isnt a Arch-vile trap and/or revenants, wich to me are the 2 most iconic trap monsters. The cyberdemon makes up for it tho!
I can't say exactly how long I've been playing. As a kid I played only the shareware version of Doom 1 and then nothing until Doom 3 came out and that was basically the first Doom game I ever really played as a whole thing and finished. After that Resurrection of Evil and that was 2005 and since then nothing until last year I finally decided to give Doom 1 and 2 go again and after watching Altima's Final Doom LP I played even that game. So technically I know the games and I have played them since I was kid, but I play them as a whole thing only about year and a half. But I've played them so much and have watched so many videos past the last year and a half, that it feels like it's been almost whole life, considering that I remembered all the maps and all the secrets just after few times playing and watching videos.
I was lucky to have a teenage uncle live with us throughout my entire early childhood. I think he bought the whole Doom collection about the time he bought Half-Life in 1998. So yeah, about 15 years now. And really, it doesn't matter how long we've been playing the games, so long as we realize how important the Doom games are to the FPS genre. And also, it's important to know how addicting they are too, lol.
Both me and my dad were introduced to it by my cousin who was a big fanatic with id software. Me and my dad played it and we ended up getting our own copies of the first 2 games. Never did get to play Final Doom or Doom 64.
I remember this map. When I was younger, I remember activating IDDQD and going to the Pain Elemental room, activating the trap and teleported to the start area, and back to the room. The lost souls were fighting like crazy and some teleported to the start. I don't know why, but it was so fun.
Never knew about the teleporter at the end that skips to the end of the bridge. I need to run doom again. Watching these videos is activating a lot of good nostalgia.
Me: what a nice and challenge map. Map: let me introduce a new type of enemy, the pain elemental. Its power consists in throwing lost souls through its mouth. Me: worst and trollest map ever
You gotta love The Dave D. Taylor Blues while you're fighting deadly Pain Elementals. I also like how the Barons of Hell and the Cyberdemon infight each other, and the Cacodemon infights the Pain Elementals and the Lost Souls. I guess you've summed it up best: "Look at all those big, red tomatoes." Nice video, BTW. :)

'Course, I find myself surfing youtube for the sake of procrastinating, but... I'll get it done eventually!
Nice run! This is an especially irritating map. A good strategy with the chainsaw too. Always a great way to save ammo. I noticed the strategic use of the spheres too. It really shows how much thought went into the design of the map. The exit door was something that frustrated me for the longest time! The map is exactly as it's name applies - tricks and traps!
Playing this after getting it to work on Mac.... would you believe, the Cyberdemon teleported to my start area hahaha... luckily, one of the barons caught him for me! I genuinely thought it was over!
Haha, oh yes, that is possible for him to do that (and the other barons too). There's a monster only teleporter (invisible) down in that room where they all start. Pretty scary stuff, good job making it through alive. :)
Such a fun map! One of my favorites in all of Doom/Doom 2, along with E3M6 and E4M6 (Mt. Erebus and Against Thee Wickedly). There are others but those three always come to mind.
Hey great work as usual on your walkthrough of Tricks and Traps. I have played Doom for more years than I care to remember and for the life of me I did not know that there was a teleporter that can be accessed to cross the sinking bridge in the last room. I have had a few mouse twitches here and there that have dumped me into the drink crossing that bridge and man o man that is very annoying indeed dying there after going through all of that map! Thanks BigMacDavis1 qualiry work as usual!!!
Thanks for your comment, good sir. That is much appreciated. I can attest to the fact as well that I've fallen into the drink a few times due to the mouse twitch (or even slowness on my part), so discovering that teleporter about a year ago was a real bonus.
Hey big Mac love the channel bro, just checking to see if I misunderstood something, I thought you were saying if you go on the first pillar of the bridge and then back up a transporter showed up and it did, but I thought you were saying it would put me at the end of that bridge, instead it put me in the room with all the imps and the invulnerability Update: my apologies my friend I did not notice there were two teleporters that open up🤦♂️😂
Love this map. Short and sweet. Which reminds me (dunno if I said it already or not) - I recommend the Vanguard megawad. It's only got 12 maps or so, but it's the pinnacle of level design IMHO. All maps (and all enemy encounters within) have been designed so that you can beat them without knowing the layout in advance. And the final map is just something else. I would love to see your take on it one day. I think it would make a good material for a live stream one Saturday. Hell, this megawad made me consider starting my own YT channel (which may happen at some point in the future - I'm still on the fence about this).
Doom's a brilliant game, still fun exploring and readying your weapons, secrets, doors, keys and lots of bad guys! Takes me back! Also my dad loved it, so thinking of him every time I watch these gets me every time. Oh to be a little girl again haha.
Tell me about it. I wish I could go back too. Well, being a little boy that is, lol. Doom was a major part of my childhood, and still is today. Thanks for the comment. :)
If you happen to be watching this in 2018, you'd know that this year happens to be the 25th Anniversary of the Doom franchise! I have to wonder if anyone's planning things for THAT occasion now. For me, I am kind of having thoughts of doing things, but time will tell if I get to those. Primarily brainstorming up an Ultimate Doom 4th Episode replacement of sorts, or even a Doom II episode, not sure. Something to think about, quite clearly. Yeah.
This is my personal favorite doom map of all time. Me and my buddy used to get high and play this level all the time. Holy shit what an experience that was
That "gangbang" of Barons of Hell vs the Cyberdemon was cool to watch, lol. Now every Doom map sounds "easy" to me because yesterday, after a lot of failed attempts, I finally beated "Go 2 It" in a single run. That was painful... A 24h livestream dedicated to a gameplay of Doom games? Sounds interesting. A shame that I'll be working between December 9th and 10th, but I'll try to watch a part of it. Doom deserves a tribute like this, for sure.
Congratulations on beating Go 2 It. All the other maps are pretty easy compared to that one, yes, lol. And don't worry about it, if you're gonna be busy during the livestream, it's all okay. Work comes first.
***** Thanks! Yeah, work always comes first. Yeah, it was a nice (and crazy) experience. Now I can finish Plutonia with proud. Using your walkthrough, of course. =)
***** Thank you, I'll need it, lol. After Plutonia, TNT Evilution is my next stop. Ultimate Doom is 100% finished, and I'm playing Doom II while you're uploading the walkthrough of each level. After all, I found your channel looking for a 100% Doom walkthrough, so why not put it on practice? =)
3:05. Actually what I do is get the Cyberdemon and the Barons to in-fight and then run out the door before closes, just to be safe. I managed to do that before.
Bigmacdavis with the super shotgun: there it is everybody the super shotgun. Bigmacdavis with the bfg: shoot the bafflement wall grab the bfg there is a lot of pinky’s in here.
Man, this map is great. And I love the next map too. I think all these maps from 7 to 12 or something like that are all of them on my top 10 favorite Doom 2 maps.
LOL - Pain Elementals are my favorite enemy in Doom 2, actually. Once you hear that unique roar (or almost a laugh in the PlayStation version), you know you're in for a bad time (unless you know what to do). And their Doom 64 counterparts can be bad news. Of course, the Cacodemon is my favorite enemy from the first Doom, so that would likely play a factor in my choice.
You are so good man and your english is so perfectly to understand for other country users! Thanks for your explanations and congratulations for your videos! I'm trying to complete doom 2 on the UV dificulty, so, I will follow your videos to do that! Bye!!
Definitly my favorite map in Doom 2 It's really unique, there's the "Baron infight room", you can obtain the BFG and it's one of the easiest to do pacifist
Yeah on my Crispy Doom Source Port, the Monster behavior is much different so the Barons were actually really aggressive and moved alot more. I had like...4 Barons teleport to the start room, and I was being really careful on my positioning. One of my tries through the part, the Cyber killed all but 2 barons that hadn't teleported. What a monster haha.
Operational error: getting caught in the trap....Trap pt 2, if the cyberdemon happens to touch one of the hidden teleport pads and goes into that hallway, you're f$%&ed
You are absolutely right, this map is one of the better maps in Doom 2. In fact, for some reason, whenever I think of Doom 2, this map always comes to mind first. It's very challenging but extremely fun as well. What's more fun than clearing out an entire room of barons right? ;)
The floor actually goes down *before* you get the red key, I think as you enter the opened up part of that room. Given what happened everywhere else before on this map, I was knew something bad was going to happen, but I actually *heard* the floor go down and went back to check, and it was, and then I knew that things were about to get way more terrible than I initially expected. And of course they did. And of course I ran for the door. And of course I died a horrible death in the poison water. and that's when I knew it was love.
This map haunts me in my dreams. I’m not good at the game so I play on “I’m to young to die”. I opened a door and and it revealed what looked like something from ultra nightmare. A hoard of hellnights, barons of hell, and even a cyberdemon! I didn’t have a bfg! The closest I had was a plasma rifle and a rocket launcher! I shot a baron of hell that walked out to close and I died . It’s not unfair, but it felt like it to me. That makes it a ludicrous map.
Looking forward to the 20th anniversary so much :) It is my Grandmother's birthday that day too. Luckily the megadrive 32x is at her house so me and my dad will crack that out and play doom XD Tricks and traps is a good map, I love it but it is challenging.
Happy birthday to your grandmother. Yeah, I still can't believe Doom is 20 years old now. It deserves a proper celebration and I'm glad I can celebrate while watching a 24-hour livestream of it.

Yeah, I love this map too, it's amazing
I genuinely like this map, its is fun filled with tiny rooms with monsters and things, its a fun time
7:05 1st time I hear Davis referring "demons" as "pinkies".
Great game - thank you for gameplay with secrets .
Lol, the Barons of Hell Vs Cyberdemon was the funniest part of the stage
Hey big Mac love the channel bro, just checking to see if I misunderstood something, I thought you were saying if you go on the first pillar of the bridge and then back up a transporter showed up and it did, but I thought you were saying it would put me at the end of that bridge, instead it put me in the room with all the imps and the invulnerability
Update: my apologies my friend I did not notice there were two teleporters that open up🤦♂️😂
Love this map.
Holy shit what an experience that was
Haha, nice! :D
This map gave me and my brother trouble we always fall down going to the exit. Thank god to idclip. Playing doom with arrow keys is very hard.
*****
Thanks! Yeah, work always comes first. Yeah, it was a nice (and crazy) experience. Now I can finish Plutonia with proud. Using your walkthrough, of course. =)
Haha, awesome. Good luck with the rest of Plutonia.
*****
Thank you, I'll need it, lol. After Plutonia, TNT Evilution is my next stop. Ultimate Doom is 100% finished, and I'm playing Doom II while you're uploading the walkthrough of each level. After all, I found your channel looking for a 100% Doom walkthrough, so why not put it on practice? =)
Haha, makes sens to me. Thanks for watching my stuff. It's appreciated.
I love how he says that Doom is 20 years old and here in 2022 it is almost 30 years old!
That's insane!!
WOW, this level is unusual! And the name ("Tricks and Traps") speaks for itself!
Hi bigmacdavis! Nice to hear you again (as always).
Thank you.
This is the map that stood out for me, I thought it was amazing.
tomato? they look more like meatballs to me. 5:59
3:05. Actually what I do is get the Cyberdemon and the Barons to in-fight and then run out the door before closes, just to be safe. I managed to do that before.
i played doom 2 10 years ago and the only maps that i remember is the: icon of sin, tricks and traps, the chasm and the best map ever circle of death
Maps 7, 8, and 11 are in my Top 10 favorites.
My all time favorite Doom map
Bye!!
Hey, my friend, thank you! I'm glad the videos are helping you out! :)
@@BigMacDavis ;D
I approve of this stream mention =3
Lol, no problem at all. Should be fun.
Definitly my favorite map in Doom 2
It's really unique, there's the "Baron infight room", you can obtain the BFG and it's one of the easiest to do pacifist
This guy deserves more subs
This is the first Doom 2 map I ever saw.
Operational error: getting caught in the trap....Trap pt 2, if the cyberdemon happens to touch one of the hidden teleport pads and goes into that hallway, you're f$%&ed
"Irs just a little intimidating because of all of those tomatoes". Little salt and pepper, some lettuce, and some dressing, you've got a huge salad!
There should be a tomato called "The Caco Tomato."
BigMacDavis, I'm so disappointed in you - you didn't just use the chainsaw on the room full of pinky demons.
Hard to believe we're coming up on a quarter-century this December...
You are absolutely right, this map is one of the better maps in Doom 2. In fact, for some reason, whenever I think of Doom 2, this map always comes to mind first. It's very challenging but extremely fun as well. What's more fun than clearing out an entire room of barons right? ;)
Exactly. There are a lot of cool elements to this map and it's fun to clear out a room of Barons. Lol.
My favorite Doom 2 level by far.
The music of this level scared me as a kid... (the "wind/lament" sound effect)
Luckily the megadrive 32x is at her house so me and my dad will crack that out and play doom XD
Tricks and traps is a good map, I love it but it is challenging.
Happy birthday to your grandmother. Yeah, I still can't believe Doom is 20 years old now. It deserves a proper celebration and I'm glad I can celebrate while watching a 24-hour livestream of it.
I love this map, the music fits perfectly with the design quirks of it.
Gotcha! Is similar to this map, but the traps on that map arent that fun
