    I just discovered you and made a decision to move forward on my lifelong dream to play piano. I am deeply into the music business, but I want to give back to the Lord to be able to play for churches who have no musician. I have some training on clarinet from years in school so some of the music theory is still with me. But I love how you present you lessons and I will be purchasing my lessons from you next week when I make it home from my travels. Oh yes, Silver and Gold is a song that I've performed many times in church.... It is my favorite. And you were playing that beautifully. I would like for you to make a video playing that where we can see your hands! I was raised COGIC, so you pretty much know how I roll muscially in the Lord! HAHAAA! Thank you and I am excited about learning from you. You make it easy!

    @BlackEyeDog012 U r not testing with the minor chord of the REAL key. You're testing with the minor chord that puts that note on top in root position. So if you think the key is C, you're not testing with a C minor (or major) chord for that matter. That's not what we're doing. We're making sure you haven't mistakenly picked the "third" or "fifth" by accident. The only way to do that is to take an F minor chord (F Ab C) and test your "C" against the other two notes, Ab and F. If C wins, u r good.

    man you are good, i never learnt music theory so quick, after this ear test i finaly figured the other stuff which were not necessary to start of. I think people should first learn the Do Re Mi Fa So which is the ABC of music then train your ear from there before any one learns anything about the scale and chords

    • @Yornek1
      @Yornek1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +lwando Mnyabiso I agree, scale arpeggios is the long ass way, so many get discouraged with that way of learning, well I sure did.

    A lot of people explain this concept, but this is the one that has really landed with me. Like dolphinsatsunset1, I'm applying it to guitar. The last several examples, I went to the TH-cam videos myself to have a little more time with the songs, and I got them all right. I still feel like it's going to take me a while to get this down solid, but that just means I'll watch this video over and over. Thanks, Jermaine.

    @fadetoblack123cu Please go to the link under the video. There is a free pdf guide I added that has all 12 minor chords and tells you what to play for which prospective keys. It'll help. But the concept is, pick the minor chord that puts YOUR KEY on top in root position. If you think the key of the song is G, what minor chord in regular root position puts G on top? that would be C minor -- C Eb G (notice G is the highest note of this chord). If you think the key is F, choose Bb minor to test.

    To everyone who's left awesome comments, thank you so much! Keep up the great work.
    To everyone who also loves "Man in the mirror," thanks for following my instructions and commenting :-)... I thought I was alone. (NO, I really like that song. Like I can have it on in my car for like 3 months straight on repeat).

    Take care,

  • @hearandplay
    @hearandplay  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @joecc6 Since I notice people usually err with the 3rd or 5th, the point of using the "minor chord" trick is to make sure you're not doing it. If you were wrongly identifying the 3rd, the minor chord trick would catch it because it would give you the TRUE 1 and it would sound way better than the answer you had. The same goes for the 5th. Example - If true key is C, but for some reason, I'm getting E, I'd use an A minor chord A + C + E and test with those other tones. That C will trump the E.

  • @hearandplay
    @hearandplay  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Gibsonlespaul58yeah While those chords belong to a few keys, because of how they're arranged, yes, G major is the key. But if all else fails, have you used my humming technique and your ear and does it sound like the "common tone?" Have you tested it with the minor chord trick? The answer will be obvious. Thanks.

    What type of camera and tripod do u have set up over your keyboard? I wish I had that type of set up here. I put my tripod up on top of a dinner tray, pointed my cam down on the keyboard and hit the button! ha ha oh well...it's all good! -Man in the mir. is a hot tune dude! @hearandplay  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The "minor chord trick" has nothing to do with the song being in major or minor. It's simply a way to make sure you're not accidentally guessing the 3rd or 5th of the key you're supposed to. If the real key is C, use F the remaining notes of an F minor chord (because F minor puts C on top in regular root position) to make sure C is truly the key. Testing against "F" and "Ab" will make sure you're not picking C as the third of, say, "Ab" or the 5th of "F". It's a litmus test.

  • @quaverbox
    @quaverbox 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! I've just posted my take on the same topic here - mine is a less thorough but very quick method of working out the key. Enjoy!

  • @hearandplay
    @hearandplay  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, that's absolutely fine. You're only concerned with what key the song is in. Whether you get that by humming a note in your range or not, as long as you arrive at the same answer as me and it sounds agreeable to your ear.

  • @Victrola45
    @Victrola45 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I was actually looking for different artist doing this song. Always loved this tune. Your southern twang in your vocals really made a difference to me. Most southern female singers have power house voices just like you. Amazing tonal quality. I would love to hear you do this song with a band or even karaoke without hassling for chords on the guitar. Your style will be definitely one for my collection. If not it was great listening. Keep singing your good.

  • @hearandplay
    @hearandplay  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey bamboojoint,
    In that case, try to match your voice with one of the melody notes you hear. Not just a quick passing tone but try to pick a tone that "seems" important and match your voice with it. This should put you in the "ballpark." Then apply the test.

  • @hearandplay
    @hearandplay  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Every minor key has a relative major key. I can be in "A" minor but I'm playing all the same chords of "C" pretty much. So even if you can get in the ballpark by picking "C", you'd be very close (you'll just notice that your home bass keeps coming back to "A" and that will tip you that we're in the relative minor instead of C major. But playing in the minor should feel like playing in the parent major. (i.e. - playing in D minor should feel like F major). Rel minor is 6th tone of maj key.

    P.s one big problem that I still have is that I dont know my different keys.. Like I can use the humming trick to find the key there in, but I won't know exactlly what that key it, ill just know to doing the song in that key or to make sure I stay in the right key worth my own music by using the humming trick in reverse. But do you think you could do a video teaching the different keys.??

I wanted to ask this though, can you do a video or dvd on different gospel rhythms??? In one video I think you called it "syncopation." I'm really thinking of that ragtime feel so I can play some of that ole skool gospel.

What he may have had missed, there are singers who can sing BETWEEN keynotes. For over 30 years, i have been around bands, singers and pros. I ve heard various piano players and singers. He explains this lesson well! I hope he gives a tutorial on "Save Me Lord,:" by Isac Douglas/ L.A. Mass Choir, or anyone out there , plse!

    thats really necessary when ur reading music not when playing by ear the symbol for flat is (b) and the symbol for sharp is (#). If u r reading sheet music u will see where the straight lines are either (b) or (#) up to five of each. The number of either one determines the key u r playing in. If however u see neither of these u r playing in C. If u add one flat(b) u r now playing in F if u add one sharp(#) u r now playing in G.

  • @delchavez
    @delchavez 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The relataive minor is always three half steps (three keys on you piano) below your major. So If your root is C, go down 3 half steps to A and that is your relative minor. The other minor chords will then be located 5 and 7 half steps above the minor root. So If A is your relative minor, then going up five half-steps would give you D minor and seven half steps above A will give you E minor.

However, I still don't quite get the "lithmas" test w/ the minors. This could be due to me not really knowing my minors that good, lol. But I'll just keep pluging away at them. One day I'll get it. Good job ! :)

    Okay, so basically if you pose the hypothesis that your note is on top (the 5th). Music is such that you will have your note in your minor position( either as 1st, 3rd or 5th)
    . eg: Music is in A. You think it's in E, you have E as your fith A C E...and A sounds the coolest so it wins. You think it's A..then you have D F A..A sounds the coolest...it wins..you think it's in C you have F A C...A sounds the coolest..it wi

    So m a guitarist n a play a lot by ear.. M trying to relate a lot of what u r teaching on the piano to my notes on the guitar... one thing that has me confused with the "minor key litmus test" (n it really seems important) .. is that when you say "what note is on TOP" ... M wondering what do u mean by TOP in this case..
    Wud really appreciate of u cud help.. this is by far a very important step in any musicians journey.. thank u again :D:D

    this lesson was very important to me. thank you so much.
    but there's a thing i can't really understand.. the minor chords.
    after i found the key, how can i form the minor chord? i can i know what is the minor chord?
    i'm trying to learn music by myself, i never had a teacher and until now i think i'm doing pretty good, but that's one of my doubts if you could answer me i would be totally grateful. thank you so much anyway, for this amazing lesson.

    I wish you would have given me more time on those few last songs to see if I could hum the right note before you started humming it. But that's not a big deal since this video is really helpful and you made it practical and easy to understand. Plus I got some giggles. So thanks so much, so nice of you to post, I did get a lot out of it! Wish you lots of success:)

  • @delchavez
    @delchavez 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    So if your key is G major, go down three half steps to E. That is your relative minor. Then, if you go up five half-steps you will have A minor, go up two more half-steps, (equalling seven half-steps above the relative minor root) to B minor. So in any major key, the scale degrees I, IV and V are the three majors and VI, II and III are the minors. Clear as mud?

    I used to play Mozart and Chopin at age of 5, but I stopped playing piano at age of 7 and focused on my studies . I don't really remember how to play anything or even read notes.

    Go to Germaine's Hear and Play website for more tutorials. I just finished this one only minutes ago, and can't wait to learn more. He's a great teacher!

    I suppose when you have the correct note, you just play the minor and major chord involving the note, this reveals the major or minor mode of the song....

    I should have stuck with the free videos...the videos and books I bought from Hear and Play.com didn't help me much at all...wasted a few hundred bucks!
