Something I’ve never been able to do I now feel (and I will practice this!) I can make a go of. Like the first 4 minutes 50 of this video made more sense to me than a lifetime of explanation in passing face to face. I do a bit of spare time production in dance music coming from a DJ background. While I’ve always been aware of scales and chords and keys, it’s never made a whole lot of sense. That’s two vids from LANDR in just as many days which have caused a bit of a revelation, an aha! moment if you like, in my brain. Peggy’s Scales and now this excellent video on identifying a key and laying it out on a piano roll. Top job, a serious thank you!

There are different modes of scales including pentatonic/harmonic/melodic so on .So what about those, still we are able to figure it out! Because you are identifiying through just one note, in case the song might be harmonised in different scale rather than melody..!

It’s easy to hear major or minor using a piano… go four half steps up from the key you’re in and if that sounds right with the song it’s Major. If three half steps up sounds right the song is in a Minor key.

It's quite confusing for me to determine if the some songs are Sad or Happy. Like in this video, the song used as an example sounded sad to be but to you it was happy (same goes for Levitating by Dua, to me: Happy, but it's in F minor). In such cases, what should I do?
I also thought it was more on the "sad" side, so I guessed d# minor, which has the same set of notes as F# major. So maybe you're not wrong, its just a different way of seeing it.

Wait? But if your in the C major scale already, how is it that C - C is Major and A - A is minor? A - A would be Major too, right? Seeing as that's just the Octaves.
Hey Ciaran, A minor is the relative minor of C major. Both scales exist in one another. I hope that helps!
