@@adi.24Because MacBooks are using ARM architecture. The absolute majority of games is developed for x86 (and Windows). That means that you need a translation layer that'll convert the x86 instructions to ARM. The same deal comes with the GPU API. Since Windows games usually use DirectX you need to translate the API calls to something that the MacOS can deal with (I'm assuming it'll be either Vulkan or Metal).
Even though the solution Apple provided is very impressive all things considered, it's nowhere near as seamless as even something like the Steam Deck where you don't even realize you're gaming on Linux for the most part.

MacBooks have great CPUs but their hardware is not upgradeable and their OS is not for me. I’m a mechanical engineer developing CAD software and MacOS can’t even run the apps I use. Not to mention that gaming potential is so very low due to horrible software support. Also it would be interesting to see how the 7940hs compares when capped at 35-40W. That’s the sweet spot for the performance/watt for these chips.

@@SaarN1337 Dude, there's a big difference between what an iGPU and DGPU can do, like they're not even in the same league. When a person needs a LOT of GPU compute they're buying a laptop that has a discrete GPU. I don't even know why that something that would be debated because that point is CLEAR.
Do you think a person who's going to render a lot of video is going to do that on an APU? There are many tasks in the world of science that also run on GPU cores.
Maybe because I wasn't SPECIFIC in saying I meant DGPU it was too hard for people to figure out.
And actually in a gen or two both Intel and AMD are going to have iGPUs that are plenty capable of gaming with a laptop.
Regardless, these Apple processors don't have the GPU power to run modern games. Even AMD and Intel, right now, don't have APUs that are good at running games, and this is why I thought it would be clearly understood I was talking about a discrete GPU
"Modern games require a lot of GPU power and a lot of CPU power"
Yeah sorry no company makes a single chip that can do both, in a laptop. AMD does pretty well with custom APUs made for consoles though.

Do you have this same argument against PC laptops?
They are also locked down ultra low-end trash that can't be meaningfully upgraded besides framework.
Ram upgrades don't count, nobody needs them, makes very little difference except in niche cases, and in those cases you should get a computer with enough ram to begin with.
Please be sure to call out Asus, Lenovo, Razer, MSI etc for being just like Apple. (Minus the excellent battery life and incredibly high build quality.)

@@stevenswall my laptop beats a mid range gaming desktop that has RTX 4060 in it…wtf are you on about.
      “No one needs RAM upgrades”.
Translation: I don’t need RAM upgrades. Many people upgrade their RAM either for their work or just to make games run faster on their laptops. Even if I agree that no one needs RAM updates, people do upgrade their storage or remove their SSDs to recover data when their system dies on them. Can’t do that on MacBooks too.
How is Asus or Lenovo anything like Apple? They don’t serialise their parts and intentionally make repair difficult. They don’t charge an arm and a leg for storage or memory upgrades. Stop being a fanboy. MacBooks have great things about them. Best speakers in laptop, best trackpad, premium build quality, etc but those things are useless when the software doesn’t support the programs you use or when you want to use your laptop for gaming as well.

If done right, it barely taxes the cpu or gpu at all, instead hitting the video hardware accelerator. Please go into the menu in Resolve and show if you have gpu acceleration on and what you have selected. The results you've shown indicate that the mac was using hardware encode/decode, while the AMD system was using cpu only.
Also, if the AMD system didn't have hardware acceleration. (it should with a 780m) but if you can't get it working, you should disable it on the mac to make it an apples to apples comparison.

The M2 Pro Max is $4700 with taxes. I can buy 3 AMD laptops for that price. the fact Apple isn't shamed for this enough is why we are now seeing $4000 Windows laptops as well

There is no good realistic comparison between Apple and X86-64 for laptop.
There is no X86-64 laptop maker that will put the better CPUs/APUs in a 14" form. These systems aren't put together by Intel or AMD. This isn't even the best APU for instance that could go into a laptop. That belongs to Intel.
Most laptop makers want a discrete GPU for their better laptops, and in which case if you were to put the best X86-64 based laptop up against the best MAX the results would be outlandishly different. Sticking with AMD, whenever running tasks that can push many threads this is about 50% what a 7945HX can do. And trying to say that a 16" laptop isn't portable is laughable. They are, and they don't have to be a hunky gaming laptop to run better hardware.
So because none of these companies compete with Apple they just don't think in terms of putting together something to compete at a 14" form factor for top performance. They compete with EACH OTHER, such as ASUS against Acer, etc.......... And it's very much the same between AMD, Intel and Nvidia. They make parts to compete with each other for CPUs and GPUs, for what these laptop makers want.
So because of how competition works for the consumers who are buying X86-64 based laptops, the notion to compete against Apple never enters the picture. And without getting into market research and just thinking about what I personally would want, I don't like 14" laptops. They're too small for my vision. I prefer 16" and 17". I don't know how different I am from other X86-64 users but for me portability isn't a concern because any laptop fit's in a small backpack and it's really only the gaming ones that push the faster GPUs that start to have noticeable weight. And even there, it's not that those ICs with more transistors HAVE to have a heavy cooling system. The laptop vendors could clock them a little slower and those would make outstanding laptops for any type of work.

    • @dsirius1500
      @dsirius1500 ปีที่แล้ว

@johndoh5182 Agree with you on many points, especially about 16-17 inch, though in my opinion portability is the key factor, so even an 16-17 inch laptop should weight up or less than 2 kg. Any laptop more than 2 kg, I clearly notice in an unpleasant way when I am carrying it. And I mean the laptop including the power supply.

Possibly, if you look at the Blade or G14 reviews the cinebench graph shows high scores at much lower power levels, there is definitely diminishing returns at full power. I didn't bother doing any power limiting on AMD because I don't know how to control that on M2, so decided just to run both flat out.

i brought a16 tuf ryzen 9 7940hs 4070 while gaming it started boiling and sometimes even reach 95c
    so i returned it.
I try to undervolt but still it would reach 85c and the laptop is too hot at the bottom part and not worth the price (1600$)

Great video! Thanks a lot for thinking about us content creators! I would love it if you could do the same video but with intel added in it?

The problem for the Mac is that you can get the ASUS G14 for half the cost.
