This was an honest and heartfelt video. I don't have ADHD, but I have some of your habits, like having multiple projects going and having a cluttered studio. It's okay. We're better when we accept people for who they truly are and I think you're wonderful, kind and caring. Have a beautiful day.

I am overwhelmed and paralyzed by the number of projects i have started, not to mention the new ones I want to start. ❤ thank you for sharing. I have more ADD than ADHD. My kids have it as well. I have the same problems with focusing as well. And yes, several ufo projects. It is embarrassing but quilting is my passion. Helps me keep my mind and hands busy. So yes, I would love more videos on this subject. So far as I can remember, you're the first one to mention ADD/ADHD. Big hug to you Kris, it is very common.

Aesthetics are hugely important to my ADHD brain, too. The satisfaction of coming up with a beautiful AND functional solution is something I experience every time I use it, too. Talking about and contextualizing ADHD is a generous act. Many, many thanks. ❤

I'm in my mid-60's. As a child, we were called hyper-active. You know, the ones that can't sit still and need to be doing something at every moment. So yes, I get you! For me, I have to have organization (don't we all?) I learned a lot from Karen Brown, too, but that timer? No thank you! Being velcroed to the ceiling is not one of my favorite things. Last, a confession. I have organized my straight pins! Yep, every once in a while, they just need to be organized. So organize away! Have a beautiful day, my friend!!

I had no one idea that boredom is an ADHD trait, but that makes sense why i start things and then put them down for years. That you for the tips and the little booklet is too cute and a handy tool for those of us that need to keep on track. I am glad you mentioned this

I had to giggle when you spoke about the "pins"! Been there done that. Lol Quilting brings me peace ,joy and harmony. I just make it work. I have only been quilting about 7 years now. It was one of my "wishes". Thank you for your honesty!!

This video helped a lot. Let me/us see that quilting with ADHD can be done. Lifelong ADHDer here and it is a real struggle to fight against what is considered normal. I liken it to lefties in a right-handed world. And you are definitely a teacher with all the visual stimulation and reminders. (big grin)

I keep my straight pins organized. When I am in a sewing frenzy, they don't always stay that way but when I get a lengthy sister or daughter phone call, I find myself straightening my pins - it is relaxing. I am not ADHD but I am friends with many who are -- I enjoyed your video. Don't let anyone discourage you making videos you want to make. If someone doesn't like it, they don't have to watch it. I too like pretty in my sewing room -- I took some old crystal salt shakers (thrift store finds) and filled them with pretty glass red beads (another thrift store find) and I now have three beautiful weights to use when I am cutting fabric. My trash cans are all Dollar Tree finds in every pretty color imaginable - turquoise, pinks, blues - I actually use these for all my scraps. Thank you for sharing today.

Thanks for sharing this personal video. I have ADHD and employ the same tips and techniques that you do and it's working great. I've learned to love the ADHD side of me but that wasn't always the case. But getting to know myself and how I do things and accepting that we all do things differently, has been such an eye opener for me. ADHD is probably the reason I'm so creative and quilting is such a great outlet for me. Thank you Kris.

Thank you for your honesty! I don't have ADHD, but I have many project boxes filled with UFOs. I like the idea to make something pretty to tick off the blocks- that would be a great visual reminder on how close you are to finishing a project. But, the best tip is the folded booklet to keep with your project. I never thought of this idea- when I grab a project I haven't worked on for a while I am "lost". So thank you Kris, you are a joy to watch on your channel. 🤩

Kris, I just 'found' you today and have been binge watching your videos. I am 68 yrs old and have been sewing since I was 12, for me, my large family of 6 siblings and my Mom. I love all of your videos, but this one especially is my favorite so far. I also have ADHD and so do both of my children and their children. It is a fact of life for us but we all deal with it in our own ways. I have many of your same habits but have always felt like I have something more than ADHD. You've made me see, that it comes in all forms and sizes and that's okay. I have many projects going on at once; hardly ever finishing them and get bored easily. ex: I started crocheting an afghan in 1974 and it's still not finished. I have a trash can and all the other small sewing tools in duplicate around my sewing room, at different stations. It seems like I'm always moving the room around to make it better or 'make it work for me.' I love the organization but have a hard time deciding what fits better, this container or that one. Some call me a perfectionist in my sewing, but I am not perfect at all. I just put more effort into what I sew than my sisters do, so that makes me 'different' and 'too picky' (in their words). You have touched my heart with your honest reality and many have been blessed with this video. I am one that needed it. Thank you. 🌸

I cannot do only one project in any creative endeavor. I don’t like more than one at the same type of step, though, unless I am batch making something like zipper pouches.
Instead of notes for each project kept with the project, I just write the dates. In my master notebook I keep track of everything I do each day, with project listed.
I’m finally starting my mom’s Cathedral Window quilt. I’ve been prepping for three years; it’s Time! I am determined to stay organized :) She has an XL Twin Hospital bed. As soon as I get the floor to mattress top height, I can start cutting.
Eta: Confession time! My pins are organized by type. Each pin cushion has its own. The curved bastin pins go in a container and my clips are in different containers by size. The hair clips (I was doubtful but Lauren Moremino convinced me - game changer for bags!) have a tin container because I bought slightly more than a few. The thing I struggle to keep organized are my slightly used machine needles. I refuse to toss them before at least 10hrs of use. Ugh!!!

  • @notesfromleisa-land

The Pomodoro technique/timer is something that I've relied on for 20 years or so. It is a technique that is 20 minutes on and 5 minutes off. For 20 minutes, you work on whatever your task is for 20 minutes without interruption. If you get interrupted, you start the timer again. You get a complete unit for each 20 minutes you complete. You can see how it can be very useful for those of us who need our minds tethered. It also helps you disengage...because hyperfocus is also a problem for people like us. And, there is this wonderful program that I use called Kanban Flow that is both a task manager with a Pomodoro timer. (I even adapted a board for quilting management). Thank you for your authenticity!

Thank you so much for sharing this! I will look into it, although it seems a bit rule-based for me, which I am not great with. Twenty minutes tends to be a bit long for me. I find 15 minutes to be my sweet spot, after a lot of trial and error! I struggle with hyper-fixation some, but not nearly as much as I used to. I can recognize it quicker now when it is happening. I will definitely look into it, however. Thanks again for sharing!

Its ok, i have adhd too…we use strategies to quilt and still enjoy it…i cant use medication, use containers for my self made quilt kits and and i go with the flow, use lists, alarms and do-my best to slow down and double check. My problem is not slowing down to double check things…but have ive learned to organize and learned i have to have a clean space to work. You go girl…sew in the best version of YOU and know you’re perfect in creators eyes!

Great video, Kris. We use timers and "breaks" to address organization/clean up too. At first, timers created more stress but looking at the break as a reward helped my daughter avoid performative anxiety, one of her struggles. I also rely on "don't put it down, put it away" to reinforce being consistent. Embracing many projects is brilliant (they're in process, not ufos). Thanks for sharing such an open, vulnerable topic and your tips!

Wonderful video! I don't think I am ADHD but I do have the problems of organization, having more than one project going, and being hard on myself for not being more together and disciplined. So this video spoke to me!
    * love the timer idea
*LOVE the note to self idea for each project. This kind of little personal reminder of what you did and thought about each time you work on a project is excellent
*having ADHD comes with some challenges, of course, but I am guessing some strengths as well. Energy, dynamism, creativity, etc. Figuring out that you are pretty much okay the way you are is one of the joys of getting older, at least for me.
One more point: I knit as well as quilt (modest competency in both). I have found that since I retired, I am a much better quilter and knitter. For some reason, I am calmer and focus better. Far less ripping and frogging...which tells me that part of my focus problem was having too much on my plate! Remove the high stress job and the ability to focus grew hugely.
Thanks again for the video, Kris. It is very helpful.

Hello, do nice to see you I taught 5th grade and my first year I had 3 ADHD and 4 ADD then 6 GT! I had a great time. I learned that in total there were 13 very smart, talented bright students that kept me hopping!!! I also had 3 Spec Ed and doc average students. I made 10 lesson plans for every subject (6) subjects, everyday. It was organized chaos!!! I think I learned more than any of my student's. Best year out of 25.

I also like to keep a small project like a zipper pouch ready to go because finishing even a small project makes me feel like I have accomplished something. They both have ADHD and I have to use some of the tricks I used raising my son. Although I only work on one project at a time for me, I have three out for my granddaughter and a special place for my grandson with a list of chores that are listed in a step by step way so he thinks he has a lot of chores but really break down to one or two. Love the little notebook and do plan to start making those too.

This video was helpful and thank you for making it. It's true that there is a lot of guilt/shame with having ADHD tendencies. I do a lot of the things you mentioned that help you. I also would want to organize my pins and I will do that at times for this reason-doing so quiets my brain. Meaning when I do a repetitive task like sorting pins, I can hyperfocus for that time and stop the madness in my brain for a time. It's very helpful. I allow myself that time to regroup and do the "boring" tasks for that reason. I am also glad I clicked on this because I see you have hooped up some quilt blocks and I needed an idea for a few orphan blocks. Thanks!
