I'm a '90s punk kids too and I'm definitely not in the scene anymore, but I've brought my kids to plenty of shows, and it's changed a lot. Metal has gotten even more exclusionary over time, but some of the edges of the punk scene have softened while other parts have sharpened or hardened. Just wanted to share my experience from the Seattle area scene.

I think afi is another one of those bands who people nowadays might not consider punk but they very much are they just happened to cross over in a major way at one point
AFI is fire even now the line fly the blag flag over the west coast from escape from LA is very much punk you can hear it in daveys delivery
100 percent. AFI doesn't get the credit they deserve when they were pure punk rock. I used to take drumming g lessons from their drummer, and watching him play was magic. I like Fat Mike's approach towards the museum.
I’ve long been of the mindset that *every* AFI record is good once you stop giving a fuck about the “punk” label. I might “like” some of their records more than others, but I LOVE them all.

So Fear, with their homophobic songs (I'm not familiar with the band), that was acceptable because of the times, but not Skrewdriver? Or Sex Pistols (along with many like Motorhead(Lemme was friends with ISD btw)) they can wear swastikas because they're just "being annoying." Right. The hypocrisy is deep. Sorry, it's preposterous to call Good Charlotte a punk band. The MTV "punk bands" from that era--Good Charlotte, Blink 182, Sum 41, etc., were not much more than safe corporate products, Backstreet boys who played down strokes and power chords. Having any standard at all does not make you exclusive. If these guys are punk than there's no meaning to what punk is at all.

I almost had a heart attack listening to mike stutter and have a hard time talking the whole time. Did something happen to him or was it the signal of the interview? It’s giving me anxiety trying to watch/listen to this.
He’s been like that for a few years now. Just go read/listen his interview about how he wrote the last Blink-182 song that was then not chosen as a single because they found out he wrote it.

Used to be a big punk/NOFX fan, still am to a degree but Mike is such a hypocrite....i remember buying heavy petting Zoo and in the notes he banged on about mtv etc to quit bugging them and that they dont do mainstream yet years later they had their own TV show, music videos on MTV and a book....not to mention that in that book he says how he was a poser and would wear punk band t shirts despite never hearing the bands....he also said in the book after hearing suffer by bad religion he wanted NOFX to imitate their sound....how punk....

I dont see it that way. At the time he diddnt want to be on MTV and radio and was happy with their level of success without it. Decades later he wanted to do a show for whatever reason. Point is, different time, different person and different circumstances. Things in punk are not what they were in 94. As for the other stuff, I really have nothing to say. It is clear that he is a true fan of music. That is beyond question. I sure dont miss the days of being quized about what bands shirt you were wearing. "oh you like what ever band. Name every 4th song on every album in alphabetical order. Oh you cant. Poser". But I dont like mainsteam pop culture exploiting and commodification of sub cultures. I wouldn't frame it so much as "You can't cancel bands for what their views were when it was somewhat acceptable" so much as "If they aren't truly hateful and grew past it" kind of deal. Remember, in their early years a lot of these bands were 14, 15. 16 year old dudes and gals. Idk about you all, but I said and did some pretty shitty things at that age that I've regretted for a very long time.

Warped tour in somerset Wisconsin 2002-ish… it got rained out. We all waited for nofx so they came out to play an acoustic set. Good Charlotte came out and tried to play along and I just remember fat mikes face, just a grimace and a complete dead look of “what the fuck happened??”. lol wish we had camera phones then but many of us didn’t. I didn’t get a cell until 2003

There was a time when Skrewdriver played at the 100 club and were very punk rock '1977. before, they became Ultra right wing fascist. still they influenced early punk bands that are not racial. although thier Nazi following influenced Nazi Oi/ RAC bands in the hundreds.

A band like Nomeansno is undeniably punk and every doctrinaire hardcore punk I knew when I was a kid *hated* them. I could list so many other examples and I'm sure you could too.

Screwdriver and the skinhead movement were seminal to the development of punk as a whole. This is why I completely disagree with the meme that punks are anti-normative rebels with a heart of gold, bullshit. They weren't, they were complete degenerates that rejected society at its core. Which often came with extreme shades from left and right. It was counter culture in its purest form. By eliminating the hateful and bigoted corners. You're misrepresenting the movement entirely.
