- The SCP Foundation Ethics Committee is one of the most powerful groups within the Foundation. They don't have the most powerful and deadly weaponry, or the most advanced technology. They aren't made up of anomalies with incredible superpowers who want to do good like some kind of SCP X-Men or Avengers. No, this group of mostly normal people are plucked from other areas in the SCP Foundation and given one of the most important jobs in the world. They are the conscience of the SCP Foundation. For a group that deals with SCP-173, SCP-682, and SCP-049, as well as world ending SCP-001 entities, this is no small job. And you've just been selected to join.

You can either be the good guy or the guy that saves the world but you can't be both.
I think within the SCP universe, the Foundation is neither good or evil, they seem content with the fact that they are simply...necessary.
That will probably depend on what perspective you're looking at, let's take for example Dr. Dan's case of wanting to terminate 096 because of how dangerous the anomaly is should it break containment and get to a major population center, not only did that happen but it was also an orchestrated containment breach by Dan and his assistant, after a high lose of life including both civilian as well as a toddler and MTF personal due to the gear they were given not being completely effective Dan's request for terminating 096 did get approved but what did the foundation and like the ethics committee have to say about what Dr. Dan did well he was made a D-Class and ordered to find a way to terminate 096 himself which once that was done Dr. Dan himself would also be terminated for his crimes.
To say that some examples from the foundation are all "necessary" would be putting all of the evil examples under the rug which is probably what the 05 council want to do which can explain their distain for the ethics committee.
They're neither, because swinging too far into either would ultimately defeat the purpose of having the Foundation. The SCP Foundation is around the neutral spectrum (lawful neutral, true neutral, and chaotic neutral)

Oddly enough the most intimidating thing here is that they have access to all redacted information. There are a few SCPs that make that a pretty big deal.
They also have veto power over the 05's, so they are equivalent in power to them if not greater and have the equivalent power in terms of knowledge access to the Administrator which is the highest access available since the administrator has access to literally all information in the foundation.

@@chadmekhane3636 Not exactly, the 05 can technically do that, but if the ethics committee were to find out they literally have counters built to take out the 05 council is they need to, including their own MTF designed specifically to counter the 05's personal MTF. The ethics committee doesn't fuck around and has a lot more power then people think due to what they allow the foundation to do, because when people hear "Ethics committee" they would assume it means a group in the foundation with no power trying to stop the foundation from doing everything they do, thats why the joke "How many Ethics committee members does it take to change a light bulb" comes from.

I have to disagree at some points , the d classes are humans not products or lan rats , even if they are criminals they still have rights . They were moments when the foundation really cross the line especially on scp children like the witch child , the wannabe hero , evolution child , Dr. Bright's son and daughter , i can keep going
Its lawful evil, in some cases. But seems to, when possible, allow itself to be neutral good. Very rarely is it chaotic, due to the fact it runs on a basis of 'least pain caused', but it is never truly good for the same reason.

In case if you are wondering... yes the foundation has children D-Class for any purpose of an SCP having to do with children whether it be for containment or testing. The foundation usually gets these kids from orphanages or severely disabled kids from hospitals... basically, children that won't be missed to be sacrificed for the greater good.

The 05 Council asks "can we?". The Ethics Committee asks "should we?". And only after both have had their minds made up about how to proceed with each situation can the SCP foundation as a whole respond to the question "will we?"... that's how their system would ideally work, right?

In a way, isn’t this a promotion? Like he’s going from just an MTF to a member on a committee that has veto power over the all-powerful and all-knowing 05-Council-as well as getting 05-like clearance. Yes, he has to deal with more atrocities than ever before, but the information at his fingertips is enormous and places him on par with the highest level personnel in the entire Foundation.
It is. That's the point. The weight of his decision for containment made him eligible to be nominated for The Ethics Committee
It's a promotion. But also not. Like if the CIA comes up to you and asks you to kill people remotely using drones, and you're an army cook, then it sounds like a promotion. But it's really just a more stressful job that isn't worth the extra problems.
Knowing about terrible things too much is not worth for their paycheck anyway.

They're among THE most feared forces in the Foundation. Everyone is piss-terrified of them, because if they show up, you're basically being "made an example" of what happens to those who break the rules.

My reaction to hearing I'm being transferred to the Ethics Committee: "Wait, so my ability to recognize when I needed to make the call to wipe out that entire village, not enjoy it, and continue to function was recognized as valuable? Wow..."
The stuff they do at the SCP foundation would probably warrant every single one to be put on death row so its kinda ironic..
Yet but they also have the life expectancy of death row inmates. How many MTF agents and researchers have died in the line of duty? How many stories have you read that tells of retired SCP agents? They aren’t killing for profit or power. Their killing to save lives.

Employment in Foundation is life-time long, sometimes even beyond life-time. Employees that grow old are moved on more administrative work, if they can't work in the field anymore. Or just provided access to fountain of youth, that Foundation contains, to reverse aging. You simply can't be allowed to quit, when you know so much.

The Ethics Committee is my favorite part of the SCP Foundation. They aren't anomalous. They're ordinary people who were given one job: Have a soul, but a heart of stone.
Easier said than done, and that honestly makes them so interesting to read about. They deal with moral questions that would give philosophers reason to pause every Tuesday, and yet, still come into work every day.

What the foundation does isn't pretty or fun, but when they make sacrifices it's usually to save more people. Sometimes they are cruel, but imagine how much worse it would be without the Ethics Committee. More deaths and more pain. It's all about doing the math to protect as much of humanity as possible in the end.
I know the meme is "lol wut Ethics Committee?" but, really? If you actually read most SCP entries, you slowly come to the horrifying realization that the Foundation would be FAR worse without one, and that the Committee is a pretty crucial part of most iterations of the lore.
This is evident from the entries which involve the Committee either not existing or being locked out by the O5s. In those case you get shit like 110-Montuak (or at least the original iteration of the thing) and the various attempts by the O5 Council to commit mass murder on everyone in the real world who has viewed or edited the SCP wiki. And no, I don't particularly think that sorta "le creepy 4th Wall breaking horror" present in SCP-5999 is particularly well written, but it still serves as a pretty good example that versions of the lore where the Committee either doesn't exist or is just a joke tend to have a Foundation that is just flat out the villain and not the anti-heroic force it is in most entries.

I first started getting into SCPs when I started working on my philosophy doctorate.
The ethics committee was a big inspiration on some of the coursework that I did. It ended up becoming my favorite part of the SCP universe.
Plus, I think I could do well on the ethics committee if I lived in-universe. :)

Anyone who would WANT to be on the ethics committee is missing the point, and would probably be disqualified simply by virtue of their interest. The whole point is that the job isn't a cool adventure. It's a burden to bear.
@@Mr_Fission the biggest burdens must be carried by the strongest wills. Those who have the ability to make decision knowing you are killing a few to save the many are those who are chosen. It would not neccessarily disqualify one from the ethics comittee in the end.
I like Ethinic Comittee in SCP Foundation. They have more power and authority than the others and have better ways to solve solutions whether it is used for good or evil by its choice.

The Ethics Committee is actually one of the most powerful entity in the SCP Foundation. Not even the Administrator and the members of the O-5 Council are exempt from the decisions of the Ethics Committee. The best example I heard explaining this is to think of the SCP Foundation as a corporation. The O-5 Council are the most senior executives of the corporation, the Administrator is the Board of Directors, and the Ethics Committee is the Legal Department or Human Resource Department. The legal/human resource department are below the level of the executives or director board in terms of overall power and authority, but when an executive or a board member is contemplating doing something that might be illegal or against corporate policy, these departments have the authority to review the proposal and to accept of deny it. Also, when a questionable act is committed (such as committing sexual harassments in the workplace, disclosing confidential information/trade secrets, accepting donations, i.e. bribes), these departments have the authority to investigate the incident and to take disciplinary actions against the party that committed the act.

I have often thought of nearly every job in this whole scp universe there isnt a single one that I would ever be willing to do. death being preferable to most as I have a strong dislike for being startled..not even care for the tickle monster. But this..this would be something I could manage with pride. Harm reduction is nearly my favorite topic.
You may be missing the point of the story told here. The ethics committee is not made up of good people who are empowered to make hard choices. It's made up of monsters that are able to restrain themselves. You sound like an altruistic person, and that alone probably makes you unsuitable for the job. Be thankful for that.

The 05 council are immortal near deities, and are the ones that declare what must be done. However, during the founding of the scp, the ethics council were another party that joined the scp in the name of keeping boundaries to keep the scp foundation from doing heinous shit

At first, I thought that the ethics committee had no power, but when he said that they have as much power and knowledge as the O5, and can veto anything (including O5 decisions), I have to rethink what I said about them. They deserve all respect....... literally. I don't want to end up on their potential ritual sacrifice list....
They are equal to O5, not above. Multiple Ethics Committee members can veto a single O5's decision and vice versa.

The sowing circle is a very good example of a nessisary evil. Like yeah as fucked up as it is, it is also the most logical, ethical action. It doesn't involve civilian infants, and it prevents XK class end of the world situations, so in the world of SCP, it's the "ethical" choice.
I actually totally get the sowing circle procedure, but I wouldn't have the guts to do myself
Really hate the idea it's one of the necessary rituals needed to contain a bloody interstellar deer that can bend reality...

Thanks. I've always been a fan of monster hunters/paranormal investigators in a modern world fighting monsters. I feel Larry Correia took inspiration from this for the Monster Control Bureau. They do lesser evils for the greater good.
