The Ethics Committee even have their own Mobile Task Force, Omega-1. They're among THE most feared forces in the Foundation. Everyone is piss-terrified of them, because if they show up, you're basically being "made an example" of what happens to those who break the rules.
The Ethics committee also have their own Mobile Task Force designated Omega-1 ''Law's left hand'', It's pretty much The Committee's own version of Alpha-1.
So if you're in the ethics committee, you can actually read an SCP article that does have any redactions or [DATA EXPUNGED]s? Sounds like its worth the moral fallout to me.
The Ethics Committee finds the Badass Janitor of violations as using a broom handle to [expunged] and then dumping a bucket of [expunged] on SCP-682 was in clear excess. Scheduled to be killed in [expunged] years.
I know the meme is "lol wut Ethics Committee?" but, really? If you actually read most SCP entries, you slowly come to the horrifying realization that the Foundation would be FAR worse without one, and that the Committee is a pretty crucial part of most iterations of the lore. This is evident from the entries which involve the Committee either not existing or being locked out by the O5s. In those case you get shit like 110-Montuak (or at least the original iteration of the thing) and the various attempts by the O5 Council to commit mass murder on everyone in the real world who has viewed or edited the SCP wiki. And no, I don't particularly think that sorta "le creepy 4th Wall breaking horror" present in SCP-5999 is particularly well written, but it still serves as a pretty good example that versions of the lore where the Committee either doesn't exist or is just a joke tend to have a Foundation that is just flat out the villain and not the anti-heroic force it is in most entries.
I've been told that the norse vikings didn't have a concept of good and evil, instead order and chaos. Order can be positive and negative, same as chaos. I think this applies well to the SCP foundation
I first started getting into SCPs when I started working on my philosophy doctorate. The ethics committee was a big inspiration on some of the coursework that I did. It ended up becoming my favorite part of the SCP universe. Plus, I think I could do well on the ethics committee if I lived in-universe. :)
Anyone who would WANT to be on the ethics committee is missing the point, and would probably be disqualified simply by virtue of their interest. The whole point is that the job isn't a cool adventure. It's a burden to bear.
@@Mr_Fission the biggest burdens must be carried by the strongest wills. Those who have the ability to make decision knowing you are killing a few to save the many are those who are chosen. It would not neccessarily disqualify one from the ethics comittee in the end.

What the foundation does isn't pretty or fun, but when they make sacrifices it's usually to save more people. Sometimes they are cruel, but imagine how much worse it would be without the Ethics Committee. More deaths and more pain. It's all about doing the math to protect as much of humanity as possible in the end.

The Ethics Committee is actually one of the most powerful entity in the SCP Foundation. Not even the Administrator and the members of the O-5 Council are exempt from the decisions of the Ethics Committee. The best example I heard explaining this is to think of the SCP Foundation as a corporation. The O-5 Council are the most senior executives of the corporation, the Administrator is the Board of Directors, and the Ethics Committee is the Legal Department or Human Resource Department. The legal/human resource department are below the level of the executives or director board in terms of overall power and authority, but when an executive or a board member is contemplating doing something that might be illegal or against corporate policy, these departments have the authority to review the proposal and to accept of deny it. Also, when a questionable act is committed (such as committing sexual harassments in the workplace, disclosing confidential information/trade secrets, accepting donations, i.e. bribes), these departments have the authority to investigate the incident and to take disciplinary actions against the party that committed the act.
6:44 SCP 5000 wasn't meant to end with the "Bad Ending" with the defeat of the Foundation in its mission to destroy the Entity by destroying humanity? Also didn't the ethics committee decide to do so with unanimity?
GOC: *Kills anomalous objects* SCPF: *Kills humans for research purposes on anomalous objects* GOC: The scp foundation is risking people for these threats SCPF: The goc kills anomalies that could be harmless Me: you're both maniacs
In some versions of the SCP foundation there is a *Level 6* : The Administrator and that is where the Ethics Committee in those realities gets its power from.
I have often thought of nearly every job in this whole scp universe there isnt a single one that I would ever be willing to do. death being preferable to most as I have a strong dislike for being startled..not even care for the tickle monster. But this..this would be something I could manage with pride. Harm reduction is nearly my favorite topic.
You may be missing the point of the story told here. The ethics committee is not made up of good people who are empowered to make hard choices. It's made up of monsters that are able to restrain themselves. You sound like an altruistic person, and that alone probably makes you unsuitable for the job. Be thankful for that.
Them:We have a ethics committee? (Visible confusion) EC:Yes. Though, that might depend on the universe. But I assure you, when we exist, we serve a very important function.
Depends on what ethical means to you. If ethical means to try to save D-Classes from their gruesome fate of a snapped neck from 173 or being destroyed by 682, then no, they aren’t. If ethical means that we sacrifice some things to protect humanity as a whole, then they’re some of the most ethical people in their world. Ultimately, it comes down to what the other commenter said. Feeding a snake a mouse may kill the mouse but sustains the snake
The 05 council are immortal near deities, and are the ones that declare what must be done. However, during the founding of the scp, the ethics council were another party that joined the scp in the name of keeping boundaries to keep the scp foundation from doing heinous shit

For someone like me being appointed to this committee might be as bad as a life sentence. I imagine sitting down with one of my more principled friends and hearing them talk about how much animals suffer when humans perform experiments on them. He has no idea that I and others in the Ethics Committee are responsible for the deaths of so many humans. I and them have approved the subjection of thousands of D-Class Personnel to horrendous experiments. Even among that number there were/are people who were falsely convicted felons, people who were giving all their energy to bettering themselves in prison and could have made a positive difference to society once they were released, people who normally would have grown up to be good citizens but were born into a horrifically abusive family where real love was alien to them. I know that not all of them deserved what we did. God, did even the worst deserve facing something like SCP-682 or 106? I know how much of a misconception it is that people are either decent folk or criminals - it only takes one bad mistake, one momentary lapse of judgement for someone to ruin their lives forever. I am not arrogant enough to think that I couldn't have been in their shoes in another set of circumstances. And there is so much good that even a bad person if they have the chance. I know why the Ethics Committee exists. I know why it's necessary. I know that it's reduced an immense amount of suffering in a great many situations. But there will always a part of me that can't justify what I've done. There always a part of me that can hear the screams, the begging for mercy from the people we threw to the wolves. How much humanity have I sacrificed in the name of protecting it? Will I ever be able to forgive myself?

The fundation:STRESS
TEC:would you like a cup of tea?
The stuff they do at the SCP foundation would probably warrant every single one to be put on death row so its kinda ironic..
Yet but they also have the life expectancy of death row inmates. How many MTF agents and researchers have died in the line of duty? How many stories have you read that tells of retired SCP agents? They aren’t killing for profit or power. Their killing to save lives.
@@cadman02
Employment in Foundation is life-time long, sometimes even beyond life-time. Employees that grow old are moved on more administrative work, if they can't work in the field anymore. The Pinocchio reference is great, because in the original; Pinocchio straight up murders Jiminy Cricket
The Ethics Committee is preventing an SCP 5000 scenario on a daily basis

The ethics committee: allow us to introduce ourselves
That guard: The ethics committee does not exist, Dr. Bright has invented it all
Dr. Bright come is: The ethics committee is real.
So true
6:44 SCP 5000 wasn't meant to end with the "Bad Ending" with the defeat of the Foundation in its mission to destroy the Entity by destroying humanity? Also didn't the ethics committee decide to do so with unanimity?

The level 5 is supposed to be the highest clearance level, but their authorities vary depending on the department you belong to... The exact level of authority is quite confusing as in the wiki they tell that above everyone is the administrator, who is capable of bypassing the restrictions of the ethics committee. But it also says that the ethics committee can actually cease the administrator.

3)they were voted in via the EU and other nations if i remember correctly.
4) i think its normal with each nation appointing one person per but i dont know who leads it
5) no clue
Calvin Lucien isn't in this canon
5) The role of The administrator is a gray area in terms of where it belongs. T.A has 05 clearance, but is not counted as an 05 but neither is seen as a member of the ethics commitee

3) I don't think this is explained, ever
4) There isn't, all employees are equal, presumably
5) The Administrator is above every level. In some cannon, they are an entity that made the Foundation
