    I drove the glc300 e and its an absolute torque monster. the battery was fully depleted and the car still generates full power because it defaults to a hybrid at this point in time. What people need to understand is that this neither a full EV nor a full hybrid. It can be used a full EV but but limited by the battery charge or it can be used as a full hybrid all of the time with the full combined power of the EV and ICE. Correct? to me this is a great to have as an option once charging is not an inconvenience for you.

      How far was the real life electric range?

  • @dorostheodorou9419
    @dorostheodorou9419 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Drive a GLC300e the petrol version of the hybrid and very disappointed of the range in full electric. It says up to 27miles but in reality doesn’t max 15-17 as cold and hearing is on and live in London so start stop. Then needs at least 1.5hours to change back up and when you live in a flat like I do pretty not convenient.
    So most times the electric is empty and only using it as an EQboost mild hybrid so a waste.
    I would get the diesel or petrol with the EQboost mild hybrid as more than enough. It starts stops seamlessly and glides in traffic as keeps engine off

  • @Frosh123

    How long is the range of the battery when using both electric and diesel?
    People do long range videos all the time like "How long does it take to go 1000km with Tesla". I'd really like to see a similar video checking how long it will take to go 1000km with the goal of always being hybrid to REALLY maximize the MPG.

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question - maximising MPG on a long run would be done using the Battery Level drive mode and exploring how to do this is something we've got planned for an upcoming video; this switches off hybrid assistance for driving and primarily uses the engine but still allows for coasting with the engine switched off and energy recovery to take place through braking or direct supply from the engine. One could argue that doing 1000km with this would be done quickest by just using the engine and driving from Plymouth to Bridge of Don (just north of Aberdeen) - a distance of 1000 km/621 miles on the road - with one fuel stop in around 10 hours.
      However, I think there's more to it and the consumption figures can give us a bit of an indication as to the fuel consumption on a 1000km route. The combined fuel economy figure of using electric and diesel power can only tell us so much because of how the WLTP test cycle is completed for plug-in hybrids so we took a look at the consumption of the car running on just the diesel engine.
      For this we assume that we use the hybrid system for low speed driving and acceleration up to high speeds before running the engine at high speeds. We've averaged out the combined fuel consumption figure using the engine only at WLTP Extra High (speeds up to 131 km/h /81 mph) which gives us 7.1 litres per 100 km or 39.8 miles per gallon - a figure I know is achievable on non-hybrid GLCs. With the fuel tank size of 50 litres that translates to an estimated engine running range of 704.4 km or 437.7 miles so one fuel stop would be needed. The electric assistance with the car in its Battery Level drive mode would be able to help out throughout the drive - what we can't predict is how much engine off coasting would be done and as usual on a long drive at a consistent speed, I would expect that figure for the trip to go up. On a similarly long drive in a C-Class Coupé with the 2.0 litre diesel engine I went way above the official consumption figure.
      To answer the question of how long the battery range is when using diesel and electric power, I think that electric assistance could be used throughout most of the journey; for long range hybrid drives, it's most efficient to use electric power in low speed sections and when accelerating up to cruising speeds before flipping over to the engine for the motorway running - that way, the battery wouldn't be depleted in the first section of the journey and could be used for the last section of the trip and when arriving in town. Given that a drive that long would certainly need an hour to recharge some human batteries, I'd use any time stopped to top up the car's battery and I actually think the door to door time between a Model 3/Model Y on the same route would be fairly similar.

    Really good review thank you, showed this video to my wife a few months ago and it helped persuade her that we should change our car to one of these. We now have a GLC300DE premium on order, due for delivery in May. Most of our daily drives are under 20 mile round trips so we are hoping that they’ll be almost all electric. We do numerous long drives from Manchester to Cornwall & back each year - I’m curious if any other DE owners could let me know what MPG they see on long motorway trips?

    Hi , thanks for the valuable info in this video , I just have GLC300e which is plug in , I feel very annoy it’s not easy to find charging points , my question is it possible to use it as mild hybrid just get charge from brake energy till be charged ? or it will be harmful for batteries , and it’s default to start as electric then switch to combustion engine what if batteries are flat for long time does it start ?

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great questions. The car will recover energy wherever possible - to enhance the recharging of the battery whilst on the move try running the car in the Battery Level (BL) drive mode. This prioritises using the engine over the battery and will divert some power from the engine to recharging the battery when it can.
      The usable battery capacity of the GLC300e/de comes in at 13.5kWh but there is additional capacity which is reserved for starting and running the car - even if the battery is depleted the car will still start and run.

      @@dorostheodorou9419 That's correct - the battery always retains a certain amount of power to be used to start and assist the engine. When the battery is depleted the car will increase the amount of recovery and direct engine to battery charging that it does.

    and so what driving mode should I use for a 3 hr motorway journey ?

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! Battery Level is best for motorway runs. Think of the plug-in hybrid models as electric where it is best, engine where it is best rather than an electric car for 30 miles and then a petrol/diesel car thereafter. I've found that the most efficient combination for motorway drives is using electric power in low speed sections and when accelerating up to motorway speeds, then putting the car in Battery Level and using the engine to cruise. This maintains the state of charge in the battery so you have electric power available for when you next need it on your journey - like if you are heading into a city - rather than using all the electric power up at the start of your trip. I've done lots of motorway runs in the plug-in hybrid models using this technique and it is the best way to maximise the efficiency of both parts of the car's powertrain.

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question - the car does have a DPF. The OM654 diesel engine in the GLC 300 de and the M274 petrol engine in the GLC 300 e both feature particulate filters in order to comply with EURO 6 emissions standards. The GLC 300 de also uses AdBlue/diesel exhaust fluid to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions to the tailpipe.

    • @LandLAutomotive

      In all drive modes (other than EL/electric) the car will use radar-based regen which I always prefer when driving out of town. Cruise control must be off for this to work.
      Driving in town or traffic, I'd switch to electric drive and pull the downshift paddle to select D- for stronger regen and a bit of one-pedal driving. Give it a try - it takes a few drives to get to learn the best regen settings for the type of driving you do but it will come naturally in no time. Let me know how you get on!
