In the past most men just went to bars and drank alcohol , all while gambling away their income. Gaming is a much better hobby.

My Dad is over 70 years old and he loves his Horizon Zero Dawn, his Elder Scrolls Online, his Witcher III, and other games. Even after his stroke three years ago he fought back and can play again. He finished Tales of Arise and Final Fantasy 16 in the last year. I am very, very proud of him - my Mom loves to watch the story and if he cannot reach some complicated jumping sequence, I am here to help.
He is one of my biggest inspirations for playing video games. It is important to have fun. It's less a question of skill, I think. Okay, he will never play a Souls game, but he loved Ghost of Tsushima. And so: You need to find games that are good for you and are fun for you.

He had to work very hard beforehand with doctors and stuff but I am just glad he can still play games. I think it would be devastating for him to not be able to play anymore which is something I fear a bit.@@thegamersician

Same...I'm a 38 yr old female and I still enjoy gaming. I'm a casual gamer though but I love my single player action/adventure and fps games. Now getting into street fighter 6, my first street fighter game ever 😊😊
I am 51 years old. I started playing video games when there was only "Tennis" two bars that moved up and down with a ball ... square!
Now listening to the video I found myself in many places. I've never liked fast games, beat 'em ups etc. and I've always focused on slow and immersive adventure / horror. My children, on the other hand, play at full speed, but when we play a game together, they are always happy to help me. I made them discover the old video game schools and they really enjoy it. For me it is also a relief and relaxation valve for my daily routine, as I work with dementia or psychiatric patients (I'm a social health worker). I've found many cues in video games to allow me to empathize with them and I'm happy with it.
Now I'm in the phase of looking for a story in a video game and fortunately there is material. For example Death Stranding has made me play about 800 hours since it came out, It's a game that relaxes me and reconciles me with myself, but at the same time it allowed me to "connect" even better with real life.
Are you too old to play? No, because as Pablo Picasso said, "It takes time to become young"...
Thank you so much for weighing in! I'm 36 so I'm still a ways from 50, but I totally understand using games to start to "slow down" more. I still really enjoy Souls-likes, hard games, etc.- but I can see a time where I will lean more and more into my favorite puzzlers and more chill games.
So interesting you really loved Death Stranding. I haven't tried it yet, but it makes sense that it's a very mellow game. People knock walking simulators, but if you want to just relax and take in the scenario, movement, management, etc., it makes total sense!
What types of games do you play with your kids?
@@thegamersician So, when I play with them we are on Minecraft, some racing/football game or very very simple shooters. When they play with me, we are on Resident Evil (old generation) or puzzle game or escape room :)
Here I agree with you, I love playing old games that have made my history as a gamer and nobody takes them away from me; Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Soul Reaver, Final Fantasy ecc :)
Ugh, Soul Reaver! If there was ever a game that needed a loving remake, it's that one.

There have been several points in my life where I thought I had outgrown games, but than a few years later and I found myself enamored with them again. So I'm reluctant to ever say I've fully outgrown gaming. However, at 42 I don't game like I use to for a myriad of reasons. I do it more socially now than anything else.

I totally feel what you're saying. I figured after college when I slipped out of gaming, that I'd be done. But it always keeps calling me back. Even as I take sort of "micro" breaks, there's a game on the horizon I get super excited about and makes me want to fire up my console or PC again.

I’m not a gamer, but I have one in my house. It’s complete addiction and at the age of 19 with little social skills. Interaction online is not real, it’s what you want to be real. Not my child and the mother doesn’t want to “hurt his feelings” and I hope isn’t past the point of no return. Screaming at a screen and acting like a badass from pressing buttons is mind blowing to me. Casual play is fine but disconnecting that much from reality destroys all of the skills you address. Thanks for the vid.
Oh certainly. Like anything that can be good, too much can be bad. I think a life without balance and utter obsession over any single thing is probably an issue, outside of rare exceptions (pro athletes or musicians for example).
I used to play a LOT more videogames as a kid and young adult and, at 37, am highly successful both in my career and in general. So I'd say they'll probably be fine as long as reality isn't totally lost on them.

I'm turning 30 this year, and after two years of working full time and being in graduate school, having almost no free time for myself, I'm still struggling to get back into video games like I was before. Last year, the only games I really played were Stray and Pokemon Scarlet. I do play Minecraft almost weekly with a friend, at least. What really has taken my interest and time away from video games, though, is Dungeons and Dragons. I'm just so invested in the social, cooperative, and storytelling experience of a tabletop roleplaying game like D&D. It's lit a fire of creativity in me that I haven't had since high school, and because of that it's hard to find interest in most video games which are much more specific and curated experiences that I can't exercise that kind of creativity with. Maybe I won't ever go back to being the kind of gamer I was before grad school and D&D, but I think video games will still be a staple hobby regardless. Just might be pickier about what games I buy and play.
It's so funny how a lot of our stories are the same. You're going through a very similar scenario as me in my mid to late 20s. But instead of D&D, I was making music. Producing, rapping, playing shows, working on my record label with my homies... And that was my creative outlet. After my last album in 2016, I felt I was ready to get back into gaming. This channel finally relit my creative spark.
My main take away from this video and the process of making it? Be okay with the ebbs and the flows of gaming consumption. Everything changes. You may come back harder than ever one day.

I feel this video in my soul! I'm about to turn 41 yrs old. Been a gamer since I first held an Atari 2600 joystick when I was 1 year old. Now, I have my family (wife and 2 kids) and time for gaming has definitely changed over the years. I put more thought into which games I play and sometimes, completely pass on a game simply because I don't think I will have the time to truly put into it. Love playing games with my kids (10 and 5 yr olds). Getting them into the games I grew up with is amazing. Wouldn't trade it for the world. That said, sometimes, I just need some time to play a game that I want to complete and enjoy the time put into it. And now running a gaming TH-cam channel, it actually gets trickier. Picking which games to stream or record for a video takes time and thought. I enjoy it SO much, but it certainly comes with work and effort that must be put into it.
I will be a gamer my entire life and wouldn't have it any other way. Absolutely LOVED this video! Such an awesome topic to cover. Really well done!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I am childless which definitely relieves some of the pressure, but there's just sooo much to get done! And yes.... covering games makes it harder in a lot of ways... but for me, it was almost necessary to commit to a game.
I started my channel to sort of "force" myself to actually be thoughtful and finish games lol I was in a space where I'd play a game for like an hour or two, dump it, then move on. Not that there's anything wrong with that, per se- but I wanted to continue to make progress and complete games I was interested in. So I do spend a lot of time mulling over which game to play (since I'm more than likely doing it to cover for the channel), but it all leads to me trying new games, and actually finishing them- see: Kingdom Hearts I and II.

And yea, I was way better at games when I was younger 😅. I do think more of it comes down to how MUCH I played back in the day vs. some sort of physical decline... but it's honestly probably a LOT from column A, a little from column B lol

I find myself being a lifelong gamer. It’s those stresses of life, or life changing decisions, like you mentioned, that remain an obstacle to that hobby. But regardless, I make time where I can!

This is a fantastic video. Well produced, philosophical, thought provoking, and well considered. I liked every second. As for fighting games, I've actually found the older I get the more I like them because they're one of the few games left that still do local gaming which helps me appreciate them even more. So I can show up to a local weekly fg meet up for a few hours, have some fun, and leave. I don't have to be Daigo to enjoy them! I've found with online it's impersonal. Offline I can ask some questions and we can bond, so it's more social and fun. Getting bopped online is tedious and often you don't learn anything. Getting bopped offline can be a fun night with the fellas. I get your points, though!
Thanks man! And that's a great point i/r/t fighters. I think my main issue is lack of in-person playing. Online is great when the competition is stiff but outside of those rare matches, I hate it

At almost 40. I game now more than I ever did as a kid. Or even in my 20s. When I was young there weren't as many games to play. And we didn't have a console in the house, just pc. Screen time was pretty limited when sharing 1 pc with 6 other people. In my 20s I had some good gaming marathons. But they never got in the way of college or work. In my 30s I have probably done the most gaming. I work 9-5. But outside of my job and kids I don't have a lot going on. I don't enjoy TV. My wife goes to bed early for work. And generally we are just stuck at home most of the time. So not really a whole lot of other things to do outside of household responsibilities. Which generally only take a couple hours most nights. Often I get 4-6hrs of gaming in each night.

Well now I feel old haha but I’ll play games until I cannot any longer for whatever reason! I did play competitive games at a pretty high level Neil recently just not liking the direction of it (Overwatch) but never been very good at fighters period. I’ll play SF6 though! Just for fun, I’m real bad. But I love games!
Hahaha let's play some SF6! I used to play Third Strike semi competitive in tourneys myself... But I haven't really gotten into a fighter much since. I DID get into the new Samurai Shodown for a minute but then online got too jank so I stopped.

Great video, man! This is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. I've always leaned more towards competitive gaming, and not having the hours to play and mechanical skill I used to have is frustrating for sure. I think finding games that still scratch that competitive itch but aren't as mechanically intensive, like card games, has been big for me. I still love gaming though, and it'll always be a part of my life in whatever form it may take!

I *USED* to be pretty competitive- playing stuff like Third Strike and whatnot in tournaments. They just take so. much. time. And once my friends dispersed, I sort of stopped gaming entirely for about 5 years.
My relationship with gaming has changed, but this channel was a catalyst to stick with them. I think it has stayed a great motivation to finish stuff.

Played first console game Oct. 2013 (controller was steep learning curve-my teacher still has flashbacks 🫣), played second console game 2015, played same game from 2013 on PC around 2016 (same steep learning curve with “wasd”, but self-taught until I was able to rise above the level zero that Po the Kung Fu Panda started at…now at level one…DO NOT have me on a combat team. 😆). Few games interest me since blood/gore/ugly not my thing, but can do combat with controller-surprisingly have aggressive berserker side. Games can teach you more about yourself than you learn about them. Next game challenge-learning to fly the F4-Phantom-SO ready for this!! ⚔️

As I got older my game genres changed. I now longer have time to grind fps shooters or rpgs. Now I play fighting games and adventure games like uncharted, tomb raider etc. Since they are easier to pick up even if you stop playing for a week
I totally feel that. I used to be almost 85-90% RPGs and fighting games, but oddly enough, I've fallen off almost entirely on fighters (since I was a very social FG player), and RPGs I've only RECENTLY come back around to because they do so well on my channel.
But most of the games I play are shorter indies, or ones that I can just pick up and play, then drop if I need to.
Age definitely impacts HOW we game, but I don't think it should impact that we do it. Hopefully we all keep gaming as long as it continues to serve our interests!
I feel seen. Ive turning 40 and actually making a return to gaming after college. Introducing video games to my son has been rewarding. And visiting my old favorites made me realize that video games are like music. You enjoy your era and dont have to get into the new stuff. My kid has a blast with Nintendo 64 and gamecube just th3 same

I'm 28 now and it's been definitely hard to keep up with gaming (compared to when i was a kid). But, I can appreciate being at the age now where i better enjoy how games are made and games i would not have touched as a kid when i was more actively playing

Good video. I was always curious about what the stats have been on that... but not enough to chase it. 😂 And for years, people would avoid the subject - just not into it.
After Pong came out, I was hooked. Couldn't get enough of Atari, and played anything I could get my hands on after that. I did stop for a time, what with kids and work. As a single mom later, there just wasn't a lot of time, like you said. And not much money, either! 😅 As most overworked people do, I crashed pretty hard (multiple disabilities now). Had a lot of time on my hands after the kids got into Jr high and high school. I had taught them how to clean up after themselves, so my chores weren't so bad. Just had to readdress things for their disabilities. What better time to take it up again? 🤷🏼♀️ My brother hooked me up to a Beta game, and it was on from there.
Anyway, 4 generations of gamers in this family, ages 13-80. It's been quite a ride. 😂 Friends from the past drifted away when they found I was too busy being married, but a very few stayed to game for a bit when I did TTRP. Some of my kids are in the 30-40 range, and still play first person shooter games. They have a very few friends online. Small circle, but committed. My skill level flows with whatever issues I'm having that day, but I have some pretty good moments when I'm not embracing fall damage and lava baths... I do agree that age has caused me to lean more towards slower games, but I still like some of the shooter genre. I think it just depends on the person, I guess... 😂

I'll be 45 this year. Been playing video games since I was around 4 or 5. I'm an arcade and console collector and have been collecting since the mid-90s when I was in high school.
While I don't really play much anymore, I still love to dust off my old consoles from time to time. Although, I do feel like my reflexes and reaction time isn't as good anymore.
Been divorced for almost 12 years and have no children, so, feeling like a free slave, at this point. Lately, have been focused more on working out and dropping weight and there are times where I think about parting with pieces of my collection. Either way, it will always be a part of me.

And I totally feel you- nearing 40, and been gaming since I was about 5 or 6. I'm not much of a collector, but I do love games.
I just find it harder and harder to sit and game for long periods of time like I used to. I'd toss 4 or 5 hours at a JRPG back in the day. Now I can set aside maybe 60, 90 mins. And of course these games just get longer and longer so then I end up going to play something short, sweet, and familiar.
Definitely stay active my dude! Fitness has been a big part of my life, with 25 years of martial arts and many years of lifting under my belt. Hoping not to slow down until I really have to.

In my case, I was damn near 380 lbs and at only 5'7". That was ridiculous. I'm down about 90 lbs and have a long way to go, and that has been the main focus over gaming lately. Trying to live a little bit longer.
I salute you on the JRPGs. I never really got into RPGs, in general, because they are long, as you said, but that's dedication.
I have always been more into fighting games and then shooters but, lately I have found myself going back to my older consoles and classic arcade titles. Pick up and quick play is what's for me I suppose these days.
You asked about my favorite piece in my collection and that would be my Neo Geo AES. I'm a huge fan of SNK going back to when I was a kid playing their NES arcade ports.

@thegamersician it's all good. Appreciate the encouragement, bruh. I gained a little bit back mainly due to diet but, getting myself together and back to my routine. You know it's the black man trifecta that I am battling, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Gotta get it together.

I'll probably never move on from gaming. It was never an escape for me, like many - just fun. I don't enjoy multiplayer, and I don't see the need to play games on the most difficult setting anymore. Though I love Souls games strictly for the setting and lore. Back in the day, I certainly did bust my ass playing the hardest games. Now, I can't really say that I'm any worse (I'm 35), but I don't enjoy being frustrated in any way. I think it helps me 'complete' something as I work towards long-term goals in my life.
I feel all of this. And I'll be 38 this year. I do still enjoy difficult games but don't seek them out any more.
I avoided pvp gaming long before I was past my gaming prime. Gaming has always been escapism for me, so I leaned into single player experiences. I got my socials from talking about games rather than coop haha

Oh I definitely spent MOST of my time playing games on an island. I was always an offline guy. My only co-op games were really fighters and some couch co-op such. I still hate online 😂 😂

if somebody can play solitaire then they're perfectly capable of playing videogames no matter what age. If the video addresses this, then the title is wrong, and if it doesn't then I don't need to watch.

So if I don't game should I just switch my brain off and watch TV or should I interact with a game and use my brain? I think the latter is the best option.

🙏🏾 I feel that! I'm amazed there are still people that think there's an expiration on gaming. Like you said, what's the difference between that and staring at a TV the way most of them do? At least gaming stimulates your senses!
