I'm super new to knives. I started getting into knives around may when the plague ;) was still at its height and alot of these terms I didn't know and it was never explained. Only recently I find myself understanding these terms just because of seeing the being used so much only recently I kind of figured out what detent was. Thanks for taking care of the noobies
It took me the longest to get used to opening a CRK. I didn't like anything about manipulating one. I bought and sold 4 before I just made myself carry it and learn it. I kept on buying because I really liked the knives and quality of craftsmanship. Now it's no issue at all. So you really hit that point home when you said you will learn and adapt to what you like.
Great tutorial, even for knife people. Very true on adaptability to what we want, EDC'ing a Full Track and loving it 😁 Love that full TI XM-18 flipper.
My shaman is a little snug, but nicely centered. I don't feel like touching it. It's still fairly easy to deploy (taught myself the 'flick too, thanks to your video). I think I need to practice the thumb push deployment a little more. Pretty easy to wheel out, but not as easy to do it with a fast flick.
Great discussion. I think you covered that pretty well. I have a ZT Hinderer 0561 that has always had a sticky detent, and if I fired it hard it would lock and I would have to use a pry to disengage the frame lock. ZT said they would gladly service or replace the frame, which was cool. But I decided to see if I coud remedy the problem before I sent it off. After trying the Oxi-gard trick which worked for about 5 openings, I decided to tear it down and play with the frame lock tension. After about 4 tries of bending the frame lock, I nailed it perfect. Also while I had the knife apart, I noticed the G10 scale did not perfectly follow the contour of the frame liner and there was almost 1/8" of G10 protruding past the thumb access curve in the frame liner. I carefully dressed the scale down with my Dremel which allowed for much better pressure application to close the knife. Worked great and didn't have to send my piece away.
Hey man you should do a video on hoe to fix detent lash or detent rock. There aren't alot of good fixes I can find, and it would be a very valuable video for me to see and probably others. Big fan! Love your stuff bro
I like a stiffer detent like on my manual MT Socom Elites. One of the reasons I can’t stand flippers is that the detent makes much more of a difference then a thumbstid knife for example. Too strong or weak makes a bad knife. There’s more to a good detent that makes for good flipping action but the detent plays a big part. Plus, opening a knife with a thumb stud is much more natural to me. I’ve only kept 7-8 really good flippers out of 60ish knives like the ZT 0801 Ti (best ZT IMO), FF WE made Crux, Dao, Buk etc
Great video very thought out. thanks. Maybe have a double detent knife in a detent video though 🤷🏻♂️ or maybe I missed it or your EWC was not available
I bought the Tangram Progression when I was new to the hobby😶 Dirk Pinkerton did design a really nice knife there ... but the blade retention and detent are very weak, and then there's that abrasive jimping right underneath the flippertab🤬 So I was rather disappointed to begin with😩 But then I equipped it with a Kwik thumbstud and the knife suddenly turned out to be totally awesome😁 Yes, most of the time you can and will adjust to the knife, but then again, sometimes it's easier to adjust the knife itself😉
The detent/action on my Socom Elite that I just received in the mail is insanely tough… I’m not sure what to do about it. Will loosening the pivot slightly help? I have a number of their OTFs so I know I don’t have weak thumbs lol my buddy’s Socom opens very easily and I can reverse flick it no problem. Mine is not even close to that.
Odd experience. I had a CRKT CEO that was perfect. It is a very slim knife with thumb stud deployment. I lost it. The second one was almost impossible to deploy. I used a few Dremel bits (by hand) to polish the retention hole in the blade to make it work.
I prefer I lighter detent. I don't really care if I could, in principle, fail a knife after defeating the detent (which is basically all knives). I just need it to open every time I try to open it, and this is easier for me with a "light" detent. The most common way for me to fail when I'm actually trying to open the blade is to dry fire (finger slips off of tab), and this can be kind of painful when the jimping is too aggressive (like slipping off of brand new slopers at the climbing gym). For me, WE has the best detents in the business. Reate tends to be a bit stiff out of the box, but break in quite nicely. Realistically, almost all manufacturers have the detent exactly where they want it to be (it's been this way for decades now). It's just a matter of whether or not you agree with their interpretation of "perfect".
I need help from the otf master, Metal Complex! Trying to decide between a guardian tactical 025 and a Microtech Dirac for edc. Which way do I go sensei?
Muscle memory makes up for all detent issues in my experience. Practice makes perfect deployment. BTW am I the only one that had 7 mid-roll advertisements for a 26 min video?
I dont have control over the ads anymore. That's all on YTs end now unfortunately. In some vids you'll get 0 or maybe just 1 midroll, and in others you'll get lots. They recently took the tools away that allowed me and everyone else to alter midroll frequency and position.
I would like to see knives broken down into light and heavy detents. I'm discovering that I prefer a lighter detent and it can be costly to try to figure out which ones have to heavy a detent - like the bareknuckle for example, which hurts my finger.
just fyi metal, your mic sounds like it's picking up sound more on one side and therefore putting more of the audio in one ear and it's slightly offset... it's just uncomfortable cause it's so slight
I can’t tell you which knife has a perfect detent but I can tell you that my Kershaw Bareknuckle has the worst I’ve ever felt. For any gun guys out there the flipper on a Bareknuckle is the same as a trigger on a Kel-tec. Bad.
MustardCat10 I’ve been burned so many times by Kershaw flippers that I won’t even buy a ZT that doesn’t have the speed safe assisted opening. I’d be pissed to buy a $300 knife and it be like my Bareknuckle or my Natrix.
Brent Jacobs i can understand that. Personally though I have handled and purchased multiple ZTs and never had an issue with the flippers. But I can understand why you’d be sketched out.
I apologize for the comment above, I had a stressful day, I have a cold steel folder and I have used the shit out of it, and it wonderful, I'm a cold steel customer for life. It is still very shapr out the box. Plus my comment above didn't even make sense. :) sorry Metal Complex.
I will freely admit that I really don't understand the physics. I have knives that will lightswitch fine but fail when I push button. And vise a verse.
You can make a $20 knock off a $200 knife by changing the bearings if you get the right one. I don't recommend this at all and I WISH they where outlawed and I'll never do it but knifes can be way overpriced.
Whether or not a knife is using bearings has almost nothing to do with the price. There are plenty of cheap knives that use bearings, and plenty of expensive knives that use pb washers.
@@metal_complex Thanks I was having a hard time with that. Coming from you that means alot. I never see anyone compare the 2. With technology advancing so much I was worried.Ganzo is the company making them just a fyi. Thanks again.

@@t8858xno. Bearing/detent replacement is literally something that almost never needs to happen

I'm REALLY new and appreciate videos that are geared towards education. Thank you

Thanx for these videos I'm learning a lot as a newbie.

Pretty good video. Super helping for those, like myself, that are new in these hobby. Greetings from Mexico City.

Love the daily uploads!!!👍
Depends on what pivot system is being used as in Teflon, pb, or bearings.
Sometimes, but not always. Some PB and nylon knives are as smooth as bearings
Metal Complex my Teflon is smoother than bearings.
Great video very thought out. thanks. Maybe have a double detent knife in a detent video though 🤷🏻♂️ or maybe I missed it or your EWC was not available
i think that the kershaw shuffle 2 has a hevy detent

The whole time I was watching this I was burping up a cheesesteak with the works. It was lovely.
Is there a way to fix a stiff detent? I have a kizer sheepdog xl and the detent is so strong I almost can’t use the flipper tab
My XM-18 detent has gotten really light. Everything is tight and there is nothing in the detent hole.

The Detend on We or Civivi Knives are perfect! But most Chinese budget knives have weak detend! It's just to soft! Greetings MC!
At least the experience of people I tend to hear online shows that Chinese knives that the biggest jump in quality between different price ranges
Is it possible to file this detent ball a little?
I enjoy the Socom elite manuals detent!!
Migurons are something special imo. Like silk.
top two detents in my collection: Shirogorov NeOn R20, and a Zero Tolerance 0450
My one and only Hinderer has a very weak detent. It shakes open easily and is very lazy to flip.
Sounds like an early gen 4 or 3. The new ones have really heavy detents.
Thanks for the info

Does the retention ball wear out by just using the knife?? I hope not

Hey MC, how much does the Evo Typhoon run ?
I need help from the otf master, Metal Complex! Trying to decide between a guardian tactical 025 and a Microtech Dirac for edc. Which way do I go sensei?
For general edc, the 035. 👍
How do I get the fancy stickers he shows at the beginning
Patreon 👍
Ever get skunked mc? I like how you look out for people.

I’ve felt so foolish before, it’s enough to send a noob out of the collecting biz.

Ya I move around. I have a new mic coming 👍
One that holds the blade closed😏

Brent Jacobs my bareknuckle is horrible as well. So difficult to open sometimes.

Skaha 2. Yummy detent.
Yay good vid

unrelated, but I got me a under 30 buck cold steel folding knife, sharpness lasted a full week. fuck this shit.

Do you know what has the best detent? A kydex sheath. Fixed blade gang!
