@onthehwak-cn7el I don't think it was because they thought they were better at english, they likely just weren't used to hearing the words with a korean accent and some phonemes got lost because of it. in korean, the "woo" sound doesn't really occur like it does in english and is instead just pronounced as "oo", without the "w" at the beginning, and the korean guy tried to mimic that, but it still kind of sounded like "ool" instead of "wool"

This guy is great, he memorized absolutely all the tongue twisters correctly and his pronunciation is pretty good. I don't know how that girl got the word "old" from the "wool''.
This is an old comment, but I think it’s because the W sound in Korean is so softly spoken, so she was just hearing the ‘ool’ and trying to connect it to a word. Obviously we knew, as watchers, what was being said, but she was blind to it, and English is a second language to them all, which also makes it difficult. That being said, his pronunciation WAS very very good.
nablamakabama488 I don’t think there is a W sound in Korean at all,. So imo I thought he pronounced “wool” pretty well despite that fact. Even if the the w sound can’t be heard and it just sounds like “-ool” how can that be turned into “old”? Maybe we should consider the fact that perhaps there is no word that’s close to “wool” in her language ??? (German I think?)
5:09 yes, I was wondering why Lv. 2 is easier than Lv.1 but I guess the producers know better, because apparently “wood” and “wool” were difficult for the Korean guy to pronounce. But yes, he did really well for Lv.3 which is amazing 👏
If you are interested he's a k-pop idol from CIX. Bae Jinyoung of wanna one is in that group. This guy is Yonghee. He's my bias and he solves math problems during his solo lives to keep his brain sharp They had their comeback one week ago
Both Japanese and Korean people have a lot of trouble with the "w" followed by an "ooh" sound. They are taught in school to pronounce the word "would" as "ould", for example. That's why "wool" became "ool" --> "old"
Yonghee's understanding of English is actually impressive ngl, I was surprised. Yeah maybe he is not the best but he is trying his best, especially when he was explaining can is a verb.

The Korean guy did a great job mimicing the American girls accent. It seemed like the German girl didn't expect it to be that good and interpreted it like he had problems.
The problem with using these tongue twisters is twofold: On the one hand, the test becomes more about *remembering* all of it than pronouncing or understanding it correctly (as was seen in the first round. They all got the pronunciation pretty much right. But they kept losing more and more of the tongue twister because they just couldn't *remember* it). And then of course, if you have someone at the end of the line who just *knows the tongue twister*, it stops being a test altogether and the game turns into "who has the most tongue twisters committed to memory and can repeat the full ones when part of them is relayed to them?" 😅
Well memorization and understanding are always going to be connected. If you can't understand a word like wool then it's going to affect your ability to memorize it as your brain start focusing on that one spot to the detriment of the rest. Tongue twisters are also a bad choice but maybe they would work better if they were crafted on the spot.
Omg I got so pissed bcus the German and French girls were trying to make sense out of it instead of js repeating even when the guy was giving the black hair girl the nod that yes it's correct what your sayingggg
You're* And there have clearly been times where someone has said "yes, that's correct" but the other person has something different in their head, they make the differences much more obvious when telling others, while just assuming they heard correctly when listening
Yeah the rhythm of the sentence gets lost and it falls apart. Especially the last one, if you say it quick and fluid its easy, the moment you stop it falls apart and even the meaning evaporates. The 2nd guy had it right when he was using his fingers and counting out the rhythm. I once had a phone number for 24 years that was similar to the canner sentence, I could rattle it off at speed to people no sweat since it had a melody to it, but if i had to stop in the middle or go one number after the other due to the listener not hearing me right id literally forget the number order.
Ok, but some of the contestants were not concentrating on what they were doing in this video. This guy was giving his all!!! He was the MVP!!! Calm down! What is this blame shaming - you were in their shoes and were wrong too.
I love how the last three girls were only confused about the watch sentence, because they were actually looking for one. Btw: My approach would be different: Saying the sentence without stopping ONCE, so they know what is actually part of the sentence. Then, repeat the words afterwards making sure they get it, and then repeating the sentence without stopping again. "No I cannot" was a hilarous replay to the can tongue twister XD
I feel like "can you cannacan as a cannacan cannacan" would have been a better way for the first girl to seperate it all. That way you're just remembering "cannacan" 3 times

He said „ool“ and just left out the w. That made it unrecognisable to her. I would have gotten „all“ or „old“ too.
Because he was pretty much saying "ool" which is not a word, so she tried to match it up to some kind of existing word and didn't consider wool
