His choice of words were blunt, and they were more impactful. Might have to do with his English courses, and how he was taught to speak in English. It’s genuinely not that serious, and he said he was ONE of the villains. He wasn’t singling him out, and honestly the first guy just wanted the game to go smoother. As an american who is a native english speaker, i always thought english was the easiest language the speak. Well, i’m realizing that english can be just as difficult for non-native english speakers as it is for non-english languages can be for native english speakers.
It is indeed one of the easiest languages to learn, due to easy gramatic rules, not having genre for articles, etc. The only thing that might be a bit complicated at the beginning is that it doesn’t have clear pronunciation rules
You are correct. It all depends on your mother tongue. Some languages in general are more difficult than others due to grammar. English has a medium to large collection of vowel sounds, and the TH consonant sound which is not very common. Grammar-wise it's not too hard to get to a pre-intermediate level, however English is difficult to learn to read due to complicated spelling- it's better to first acquire a good base vocabulary and nail pronunciation first as this will prevent problems later on. It also has phrasal verbs- if you speak a language like German or Mandarin, phrasal verb constructions won't seem so bad, but if you speak a latin language or a language with highly inflected verbs, phrasal verbs look very strange.
The grammar is indeed easy, but so is the grammar in chinese, which is even more simple actually! It depends of how close your mother tongue is to the language you’re learning in terms of vocabulary and grammar too! My first language being french, even if it’s a latin language and english is a germanic one, they have looots of similar words. So when i hear, let’s say “cardiology”, i know what it means as it’s “cardiologie” in french. For someone talking a totally different language, they’ll have to learn way more totally new words than me. Also personally what helped me learning english is how easy it is to surround yourself with it, as it is a language widely used for communication online. So despite never living abroad, you can kinda “immerse” yourself in it!
I speak several languages, and English was super easy to learn. I actually watched the series« six feet under » with English subtitles and after a few seasons I was able to speak English!
This video shows a very interesting phenomenon in language learning: Japan and many other countries in (Eastern) Asia focus almost entirely on spelling and some reading. You don't usually say anything in class (in your target language) and listening practice is hardly ever done either. So they are often very competent at spelling things or gathering meaning from text, but barely able to express themselves verbally or understand other speakers. They often tend to learn formulaic phrases by heart (whole sentences or at least sentence elements like phrases). So when something only *roughly* fits their situation, they can have trouble changing the details of what they're saying to truly fit their situation. You may find a Japanese learner of English who has studied the language for ten years and can express himself flawlessly in work emails about highly technical and complicated topics, but struggles to do something as basic verbally as ordering at a restaurant. Most (Central) European countries on the other hand choose a more well-rounded approach with a stronger focus on communication. You can easily find first-year learners of English who will already have had enough practice in speaking and listening to carry on a (simple) conversation with someone. School typically teach in the target language from the start, so you may walk into your first ever English class in a German school and the teacher will communicate *exclusively* in English. Their learners' vocabulary is usually less deep and much broader, meaning that they know fewer words over all but can generally choose the best words for their specific situation, making communication, especially rapid spontaneous production of verbal output, fairly easy. You may find a German learner of English who has studied the language for ten years, can hold a verbal conversation about everyday topics at a level near-indistinguishable from a native speaker (accents notwithstanding) but will struggle to write a text on very specialised technical topics.
As a German who learned english since 1st grade, this is highly accurate. I consider myself nearly fluent, but I've been reading english books since 4th grade and always watch movies or series in english, what definitly helped me more than the English lessons we received at school. Also, maybe the number of lessons varies from country to country (where I live it's two 90 minute lessons per week), even in Germany some start learning English from 1st grade on like I did, some from 3rd grade, and some only start at 5th grade. I also had a very competent English teacher during elementary school, I was one of the best when I entered middle school. It highly depends on the environment, but it's definitly true that our English is more broader and less specific

I started having English classes in 3rd grade and used to not be great (not bad, but also not good) until about 7th grade because up to that point we did a lot of vocabulary work (writing them down, having tests on just them etc) and I'm a practical learner and can't sit down an just learn a bunch of words by heart with no actual use to them. But once we were past that initial "building a vocabulary" phase I started getting better and started consuming more and more media in English too, to a point where now I've gotten compliments by native speakers who didn't wanna believe its basically just school English paired with consuming media and learning from that, as well as compliments on my pronunciation. Guess having friends to talk to in English helps as well. Most of my friends are pretty fluent English speakers as well and we talk in English in varying amounts, from slipping the occasional sentence in to almost exclusively talking in English because we are just able to word things much better in English, especially on topics we've mostly learned about in English lmao

We also have this problem learning foreign language in America! The teachers are constantly trying to get us to focus on communication, but because the curriculum is geared around reading and writing, we wind up good at that (I can read at a high level in French!) and bad at the rest (I can't understand native French speakers at all because they go so fast lol).

Actually its not the official italian sign language, but a way to communicate letters with your body, some are easier to understand like putting down your hand with only 3 fingers outstretched for a M or 2 for a N, while some are hard, like touching the lower tip of your earlobe to indicate a G or use two fingers to trace both sides of the outline of the eye at the same time to indicate an E. I said this before the language English is considered a hard language and a lot of Americans wanted to argue with me and some foreigners. I told them that you have to understand why English is considered hard, because not only that our grammar sometimes has some words that sound alike in the dictionary, there’s also certain ways to pronounce them that would make English hard. And they could still fight me on it. I said what I said, and this is coming from an English speaker, because sometimes us English speakers That are born and raise in freaking English speaking countries, struggle with it and have to go to speech therapy to get shit right. If that wasn’t the case, a lot of foreigners that has English as their second language that speak other language that is not English, wouldn’t have an accent that’s literally battling the language like that and you would be able to understand them with no issue. 🤔
Castillan spanish has significantly less phonemes than english with the same quantity of vowel phonemes as japanese. But they have a better time at accuracy than the french do and definitely more than the japanese. I assure you. The biggest problem is HOW they are listening and learning the sounds. English speakers always mispronounce simple japanese vowels all the darn time wgen reading solely romaji, but found that they could enunciate it properly when reading only hiragana/katakana characters with no romaji. Some people may be instinctively applying their native language sound rules to things they see and hear. Take jackie chan for example who (in early career) spoke English with all the words at once, without pause (gosh darn chinese breathe between your words. Breathe!). Its not that his pronunciation was wrong, but his melody was completely incorrect. And unless your language is tonal like chinese mando/canto, all languages have a specific melody. Hence why babies come crying in the melody of their mothers language the very day they are born (language learning starts in the womb). Yeah...babies cry in accents/dialects. Hilarious to think about. And Japanese...have very poor teaching methods for English. For other languages? Who knows.

I felt the same way too. Like, why is he so mean to Takuto but incredibly forgiving to Sarah when Takuto barely made any mistakes relaying the message whilst Sarah did on her round??? Like, he didn't just ignore Takuto doing so well; he even devalued Takuto's efforts by calling him a villain... even though Haruto witnessed the mistakes happened somewhere else. Just feels so passive aggressive. English is my third language, and even I know how passive aggressiveness sounds in all the languages I can speak. There's no mistake in his choice of words

This video is a great example of why accent matters for communication across speakers from different backgrounds. Lots of people act like the only reason to try to get a mainstream accent is because Americans are racist jerks, and while we certainly have a lot of those here, there is value in having some more consistency to pronunciation even when Americans are not involved because it can be hard for speakers of English as a second language to even communicate with each other when they're from different language backgrounds!
English speakers are at least used to many different accents, so they can understand better. In my language (Czech) when you have some accent, nobody understands you at all, when you say some schwa sound insteaf of E or A, it's not understandable, or when you can't hear the difference between long and short vowels or difference between H and CH, you can say totaly different word then. 😀 So, yes, I consider English pronunciation pretty hard, but when you don't say it perfectly, it can be still understandable, but that doesn't work in many other languages. I absolutely hate it when I meet some American or Russian at street and he is trying to say something in Czech and I don't want to offend him by sayng I can't understand anything, so I am really trying, but I still don't understand anyrthing, so we have to switch to English. 🙂 With English, I understand non native speakers even better than native English speakers, especially British speakers are really hard to understand. Only exception are Asians, especialy Inds, I can't understand anything what they say.

I think about that part too about depending on the language some people have way less experience with foreign accents in their native language than English speakers do. Even as a native speaker of English with a lot of exposure to foreign accents, I am still much better with the specific ones I’ve heard before and have recent practice listening to. I know a lot of Chinese people from school and can understand them fairly well, but then I met a Nigerian guy and really struggled to understand what he was saying because I had less exposure to his accent even though he was more proficient in English than a lot of the Chinese students. Funny thing is, they Chinese and Yoruba (Nigerian) non-native speakers of English could understand each other pretty well but they all struggled with understanding Spanish and Indian accents in English, which I understand pretty well. I think similarity (or dissimilarity) to English and familiarity/exposure are both big factors.
@@AutumnSwatches Yeah, it's definitely about exposure. We have actually a lot of regional accents and dialects + a lot of Slovaks (which is very close language that we can understand it mostly), but sometimes when I go to part of my country where I am not that often and it's on totaly opposite side of the country, I can have problem to understand them even when they are native speakers of my language. I am used to Vietnamese people, because we have a lot of them here, but I still struggle with many Russian speakers, which could be a surprise for someone, because it's the same language group as Czech and still, I understand better Vietnamese than Russians, it's definitely about exposure, because you go to Vietnemse shops almost every day and younger generation is not that silent like their parents, they really talk to you, while when a Russian person turns all U sounds to V, it's really hard to realize what he is trying to say. And ofcourse, when you speak with Vietnamese and you don't understand, you are trying to avoid saying that you don't understand to not offend them, while most of people is not that patient with other speakers, especially when you hear that accent mainly when someone wants a cigarette from you. 😀
@@Pidalinvery interesting. You have great insights. Even though you say Russians can be hard to understand, it probably helps that you have pinpointed some of their sound changes in your language. I find that often, being made explicitly aware of the pronunciation differences of an accent can help with the listening comprehension skills.
@@AutumnSwatches That helped me a lot with Polish speakers that I looked at their alphabet and learned (at least in a simplified way) how to read that, so I can now read Polish comments and with at least some experiences, I am now able to understand much more. But problem with Russian or Ukrainian is that they use cyrillic, so I can't read anything. 🙂 With English speakers trying to speak my language, sometimes I also understand only because of I can imagine why they pronounced something like they pronounced it, but when you pronounce J in English way, older person (who doesn't speak English at all) would never get it.

I'm guessing they maybe filmed another part before this one where they introduced themselves? I felt like this part was kinda confusing because there was no explanation at the start about everyone's nationalities and names, and what languages they speak (for me it wasn't so confusing because I know Hart and Takuto, but I imagine that those who don't know them won't understand they're Japanese idols, Hart speaks English + Japanese + Korean fluently, and Takuto basically only speaks Japanese, knows some Korean enough for basic communication and barely knows English, I think).

@@louis_X I think that this channel's videos are filmed in Korea, so most of the guests live there and speak Korean reasonably well (many are fluent). That's why there are people from different nationalities and they usually have Korean and/or English as their common language. And to give you a little more context, the group TOZ, that Hart and Takuto are a part of, is a 4-member boy group. They're all Japanese, but they all took part in the Korean survival show Boys Planet. Since they're under a Korean company, I believe they're still going to make their Korean debut, but for now they have one mini album in Japanese. he lived for about 5 years in NY from when he was 5! he's actually said he's more comfortable with English than japanese, and from what I heard japanese speakers say he actually has a slight english speaking accent when speaking japanese even though it's technically his first language 😅 he considers english his "native" one

@@baracapyy We immigrated to Canada when I was 7. I never went to Chinese school. However, Chinese pronunciation is still much easier for me, and as I'm getting older, I'm actually finding that there are sounds in English that I can no longer pronounce 100% perfectly. However, Chinese always feels completely natural.

Out of all the Awesome World videos I've seen, this one is my favorite. The Telephone game is the best part. It really shows how those who have English as a second language can inadvertently distort things due to their underlying phonetic bias of their native language. As an american who is a native english speaker, i always thought english was the easiest language the speak. Well, i’m realizing that english can be just as difficult for non-native english speakers as it is for non-english languages can be for native english speakers.
It is indeed one of the easiest languages to learn, due to easy gramatic rules, not having genre for articles, etc. The only thing that might be a bit complicated at the beginning is that it doesn’t have clear pronunciation rules
You are correct. It all depends on your mother tongue. Some languages in general are more difficult than others due to grammar. English has a medium to large collection of vowel sounds, and the TH consonant sound which is not very common. Grammar-wise it's not too hard to get to a pre-intermediate level, however English is difficult to learn to read due to complicated spelling- it's better to first acquire a good base vocabulary and nail pronunciation first as this will prevent problems later on. It also has phrasal verbs- if you speak a language like German or Mandarin, phrasal verb constructions won't seem so bad, but if you speak a latin language or a language with highly inflected verbs, phrasal verbs look very strange.
The grammar is indeed easy, but so is the grammar in chinese, which is even more simple actually! It depends of how close your mother tongue is to the language you’re learning in terms of vocabulary and grammar too! My first language being french, even if it’s a latin language and english is a germanic one, they have looots of similar words. So when i hear, let’s say “cardiology”, i know what it means as it’s “cardiologie” in french. For someone talking a totally different language, they’ll have to learn way more totally new words than me.
Also personally what helped me learning english is how easy it is to surround yourself with it, as it is a language widely used for communication online. So despite never living abroad, you can kinda “immerse” yourself in it!

I speak several languages, and English was super easy to learn. I actually watched the series« six feet under » with English subtitles and after a few seasons I was able to speak English!
This video shows a very interesting phenomenon in language learning: Japan and many other countries in (Eastern) Asia focus almost entirely on spelling and some reading. You don't usually say anything in class (in your target language) and listening practice is hardly ever done either. So they are often very competent at spelling things or gathering meaning from text, but barely able to express themselves verbally or understand other speakers. They often tend to learn formulaic phrases by heart (whole sentences or at least sentence elements like phrases). So when something only *roughly* fits their situation, they can have trouble changing the details of what they're saying to truly fit their situation. You may find a Japanese learner of English who has studied the language for ten years and can express himself flawlessly in work emails about highly technical and complicated topics, but struggles to do something as basic verbally as ordering at a restaurant.
Most (Central) European countries on the other hand choose a more well-rounded approach with a stronger focus on communication. You can easily find first-year learners of English who will already have had enough practice in speaking and listening to carry on a (simple) conversation with someone. School typically teach in the target language from the start, so you may walk into your first ever English class in a German school and the teacher will communicate *exclusively* in English. Their learners' vocabulary is usually less deep and much broader, meaning that they know fewer words over all but can generally choose the best words for their specific situation, making communication, especially rapid spontaneous production of verbal output, fairly easy. You may find a German learner of English who has studied the language for ten years, can hold a verbal conversation about everyday topics at a level near-indistinguishable from a native speaker (accents notwithstanding) but will struggle to write a text on very specialised technical topics.
As a German who learned english since 1st grade, this is highly accurate. I consider myself nearly fluent, but I've been reading english books since 4th grade and always watch movies or series in english, what definitly helped me more than the English lessons we received at school. Also, maybe the number of lessons varies from country to country (where I live it's two 90 minute lessons per week), even in Germany some start learning English from 1st grade on like I did, some from 3rd grade, and some only start at 5th grade. I also had a very competent English teacher during elementary school, I was one of the best when I entered middle school. It highly depends on the environment, but it's definitly true that our English is more broader and less specific

I started having English classes in 3rd grade and used to not be great (not bad, but also not good) until about 7th grade because up to that point we did a lot of vocabulary work (writing them down, having tests on just them etc) and I'm a practical learner and can't sit down an just learn a bunch of words by heart with no actual use to them. But once we were past that initial "building a vocabulary" phase I started getting better and started consuming more and more media in English too, to a point where now I've gotten compliments by native speakers who didn't wanna believe its basically just school English paired with consuming media and learning from that, as well as compliments on my pronunciation. Guess having friends to talk to in English helps as well. Most of my friends are pretty fluent English speakers as well and we talk in English in varying amounts, from slipping the occasional sentence in to almost exclusively talking in English because we are just able to word things much better in English, especially on topics we've mostly learned about in English lmao

Actually its not the official italian sign language, but a way to communicate letters with your body, some are easier to understand like putting down your hand with only 3 fingers outstretched for a M or 2 for a N, while some are hard, like touching the lower tip of your earlobe to indicate a G or use two fingers to trace both sides of the outline of the eye at the same time to indicate an E.

I said this before the language English is considered a hard language and a lot of Americans wanted to argue with me and some foreigners. I told them that you have to understand why English is considered hard, because not only that our grammar sometimes has some words that sound alike in the dictionary, there’s also certain ways to pronounce them that would make English hard. And they could still fight me on it. I said what I said, and this is coming from an English speaker, because sometimes us English speakers That are born and raise in freaking English speaking countries, struggle with it and have to go to speech therapy to get shit right.
If that wasn’t the case, a lot of foreigners that has English as their second language that speak other language that is not English, wouldn’t have an accent that’s literally battling the language like that and you would be able to understand them with no issue. 🤔
All of them except the french one speak languages with much smaller vowel inventories than English. That's why this was so difficult.
Castillan spanish has significantly less phonemes than english with the same quantity of vowel phonemes as japanese. But they have a better time at accuracy than the french do and definitely more than the japanese. I assure you.
The biggest problem is HOW they are listening and learning the sounds.
English speakers always mispronounce simple japanese vowels all the darn time wgen reading solely romaji, but found that they could enunciate it properly when reading only hiragana/katakana characters with no romaji.
Some people may be instinctively applying their native language sound rules to things they see and hear.
Take jackie chan for example who (in early career) spoke English with all the words at once, without pause (gosh darn chinese breathe between your words. Breathe!). Its not that his pronunciation was wrong, but his melody was completely incorrect.
And unless your language is tonal like chinese mando/canto, all languages have a specific melody. Hence why babies come crying in the melody of their mothers language the very day they are born (language learning starts in the womb).

And Japanese...have very poor teaching methods for English. For other languages? Who knows.

This video is a great example of why accent matters for communication across speakers from different backgrounds. Lots of people act like the only reason to try to get a mainstream accent is because Americans are racist jerks, and while we certainly have a lot of those here, there is value in having some more consistency to pronunciation even when Americans are not involved because it can be hard for speakers of English as a second language to even communicate with each other when they're from different language backgrounds!
English speakers are at least used to many different accents, so they can understand better. In my language (Czech) when you have some accent, nobody understands you at all, when you say some schwa sound insteaf of E or A, it's not understandable, or when you can't hear the difference between long and short vowels or difference between H and CH, you can say totaly different word then. 😀 So, yes, I consider English pronunciation pretty hard, but when you don't say it perfectly, it can be still understandable, but that doesn't work in many other languages. I absolutely hate it when I meet some American or Russian at street and he is trying to say something in Czech and I don't want to offend him by sayng I can't understand anything, so I am really trying, but I still don't understand anyrthing, so we have to switch to English. 🙂
With English, I understand non native speakers even better than native English speakers, especially British speakers are really hard to understand. Only exception are Asians, especialy Inds, I can't understand anything what they say.

I think about that part too about depending on the language some people have way less experience with foreign accents in their native language than English speakers do. Even as a native speaker of English with a lot of exposure to foreign accents, I am still much better with the specific ones I’ve heard before and have recent practice listening to. I know a lot of Chinese people from school and can understand them fairly well, but then I met a Nigerian guy and really struggled to understand what he was saying because I had less exposure to his accent even though he was more proficient in English than a lot of the Chinese students. Funny thing is, they Chinese and Yoruba (Nigerian) non-native speakers of English could understand each other pretty well but they all struggled with understanding Spanish and Indian accents in English, which I understand pretty well. I think similarity (or dissimilarity) to English and familiarity/exposure are both big factors.

Yeah, it's definitely about exposure.
We have actually a lot of regional accents and dialects + a lot of Slovaks (which is very close language that we can understand it mostly), but sometimes when I go to part of my country where I am not that often and it's on totaly opposite side of the country, I can have problem to understand them even when they are native speakers of my language.
I am used to Vietnamese people, because we have a lot of them here, but I still struggle with many Russian speakers, which could be a surprise for someone, because it's the same language group as Czech and still, I understand better Vietnamese than Russians, it's definitely about exposure, because you go to Vietnemse shops almost every day and younger generation is not that silent like their parents, they really talk to you, while when a Russian person turns all U sounds to V, it's really hard to realize what he is trying to say.
And ofcourse, when you speak with Vietnamese and you don't understand, you are trying to avoid saying that you don't understand to not offend them, while most of people is not that patient with other speakers, especially when you hear that accent mainly when someone wants a cigarette from you. 😀
@@Pidalinvery interesting. You have great insights. Even though you say Russians can be hard to understand, it probably helps that you have pinpointed some of their sound changes in your language. I find that often, being made explicitly aware of the pronunciation differences of an accent can help with the listening comprehension skills.
@@AutumnSwatches That helped me a lot with Polish speakers that I looked at their alphabet and learned (at least in a simplified way) how to read that, so I can now read Polish comments and with at least some experiences, I am now able to understand much more. But problem with Russian or Ukrainian is that they use cyrillic, so I can't read anything. 🙂
With English speakers trying to speak my language, sometimes I also understand only because of I can imagine why they pronounced something like they pronounced it, but when you pronounce J in English way, older person (who doesn't speak English at all) would never get it.

I'm guessing they maybe filmed another part before this one where they introduced themselves? I felt like this part was kinda confusing because there was no explanation at the start about everyone's nationalities and names, and what languages they speak (for me it wasn't so confusing because I know Hart and Takuto, but I imagine that those who don't know them won't understand they're Japanese idols, Hart speaks English + Japanese + Korean fluently, and Takuto basically only speaks Japanese, knows some Korean enough for basic communication and barely knows English, I think).

@@louis_X I think that this channel's videos are filmed in Korea, so most of the guests live there and speak Korean reasonably well (many are fluent). That's why there are people from different nationalities and they usually have Korean and/or English as their common language.
And to give you a little more context, the group TOZ, that Hart and Takuto are a part of, is a 4-member boy group. They're all Japanese, but they all took part in the Korean survival show Boys Planet. Since they're under a Korean company, I believe they're still going to make their Korean debut, but for now they have one mini album in Japanese. he lived for about 5 years in NY from when he was 5! he's actually said he's more comfortable with English than japanese, and from what I heard japanese speakers say he actually has a slight english speaking accent when speaking japanese even though it's technically his first language 😅 he considers english his "native" one
@@phosphenevisionhe only lived there until he was 5 and then moved to japan?? wow that’s crazy he’s still so good i thought he may of lived in the states for most of his childhood, i guess it makes sense though since they say the best time to learn a language is when you’re that young so he already has the vowels and things japanese would find hard to say down from a young age.
@@baracapyy no no he moved there WHEN he was 5 and lived in new jersey until he was like 11 or 12 when he moved back to Tokyo.He's not actually american on paper he just feels more american based on how he grew up and stuff 😭

@@baracapyy We immigrated to Canada when I was 7. I never went to Chinese school. However, Chinese pronunciation is still much easier for me, and as I'm getting older, I'm actually finding that there are sounds in English that I can no longer pronounce 100% perfectly. However, Chinese always feels completely natural.

Out of all the Awesome World videos I've seen, this one is my favorite. The Telephone game is the best part. It really shows how those who have English as a second language can inadvertently distort things due to their underlying phonetic bias of their native language. I hope they make more videos following this format. Like everyone said, it was a fun combination of challenge and silliness. Everyone wanted to have a rematch too ! ! Yes, let's have a rematch.

Takuto did insanely well compared. I think the use of learning 3 alphabets essentially, really helps with him remembering a lot of the sounds of the letters in the English alphabet
Oh that second one was too cruel! She sells sea shells by the sea shore is painful to say for even native speakers. I said it to myself, trying to repeat it slowly as if I wanted someone else to understand and that only made it more difficult to say than simply saying it fast.
