    When it comes to static or dynamic rope, if you are cave exploring NEVER bring a dynamic rope for any inside-cave exploration.
    The last thing you want is to drop down into a chamber and unhook your line just to realize it was a dynamic rope... which springs back up once the weight is removed. The end of your rope is now four feet above your reach.
    Then again, you should never lower yourself down to the end of your rope.

    Great video, except Crosby shackles trainers told us Steel Mill Wrights to always fully tight shackles never back off. The reason being the steel gets more fatigued springing back and forth if it’s not tight. For screw pin shackles hand tight is enough with through bolt shackles you want to compress the bow a very small amount. If you’re doing rigging you should have a spud wrench with you anyway. Keep the PROHO videos coming!

    Merchant mariner here. Good information on that bowline knot that Cody tied. All knots reduce breaking strength of a line or rope as the landlubers call it. If I'm not mistaken from my schooling days it can be reduced by 50% by using a bowline which is why splicing an eye is preferable for certain tasks but also can be more permanent.

    • @Dan-gs3kg
      @Dan-gs3kg 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For that you ideally want a long tapered tail, and a wide eyelet as well. For highest knot strength, it's a figure eight with the knot being in the doubled over rope. For something that is more basic, I recall there is a U Join system for hanging hammocks, you simply bury line through itself with no taper until good enough.

    What a great video! There are always a couple of nifty tricks taught in each video. I'll have to remember to carry at least one ball from a ball bearing armature (some might call it a "ball bearing", but I prefer the name "bearing ball" since each ball itself bears the stress) with me, at all times...in case I have to test an anvil. Anxious to see how you're going to protect that anvil from the elements. Also: In case you read this...I highly recommend four books to you: "Unintended Consequences" by John Ross; "Molon Labe" by Boston T. Party; "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress" by Robert Heinlein; and "Daemon"+"Freedom(TM)" by Daniel Suarez. Also, if you have not yet read "The Age of Spiritual Machines" by Kurzweil, that's the best book to help develop realistic expectations from AI (narrow artificial intelligence, such as lands our planes) to AGI (artificial general intelligence ...such as can cause a robot to operate like an independent, possibly superintelligent, organism) in the near future. You may copy, repost, paste, edit, and selectively respond to this comment, as needed, but this is a good set of recommendations for weathering what might be some very dark times, indeed. Also, don't read books online...buy hard copies and read offline. Also: Don't tell people what books you've read, unless you've already done so before you knew better. All of the prior are just my $0.02.

    As a fellow rope wrangler, (for me on the ocean) coiling up that double braid/ kernmantle rope in loops insted of folding it creates huge issues if you attempt to use it straight off the coil next time, it will be a twisted mess.

    Sweet-looking anvil! I have heard that old German anvils are among the very best---but I have never owned nor even used any anvil. I did know that the "bounce" was key to the usefulness of an anvil.
    Speaking of knots, anyone who is more than a little bit interested in knots and splices, both practical and decorative, should get a copy of "The Clifford W. Ashley Book Of Knots," referred to by the cognoscenti as, "The CWABOK." It more or less predates the era of synthetic rope, and offers little for the mountain-climber, but outside those two shortcomings, it is truly a tour de force. Any prepper would do well to invest in a copy.

    Climber here, you can repel off a bowline as well as set anchors. It has different load characteristics to the traditional figure-eight knot but, again, you can still use it.

    • @c3bhm
      @c3bhm 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the best life-saver knot that everyone should learn is the figure-8, instead of the bowline. I used to climb for years and I've actually forgotten how to tie a bowline because there's too much memorization involved, which will fade without usage. Whereas the 8 is impossible to unlearn. There's nothing really to learn in the first place, since it's just an 8 that you re-thread. Just as strong and safe as the bowline, and you can't do it 'wrong' by mistake.

    • @carlbroker
      @carlbroker 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@c3bhm I'd have to go back and look at the technical differences, I 'think' the bowline has slightly a lower max kn than the figure 8? I love the fact that after load a bowline can 'break open' with one hand. Love both knots! :D

      I was a rigger at the Philly Navy Yard and currently a union ironworker. i've tied thousands of knots in my lifetime. if the bowline is king, then the clove hitch is queen. one could almost always use a clove hitch in place of a bowline, but one could never use a bowline if a clove hitch is needed. also, the ability to tie a bowline in the middle of a line comes in very handy when securing loads. an old Squid who worked at the navy yard with me taught me that knot. he called it a thumb bowline and that's what i've called it ever since.

    I know a lot of really good tree climbers who struggle to tie knots. I remember when I first started working in that field, 6 of them were gathered around me and they were all trying to teach me how to tie a bowline knot, and every single one of them tied it differently, which confused me. And then I finally got like 150 feet up in a tree, and while I could remember how to tie a bowline knot, I had no idea how to tie a bowline not around a branch. Tying one in the air is simple, but like actually getting it around the object you're trying to tie it to is a completely different skill. I keep a rope on my pull up bar and practice tying the knot a few times a week or I'll forget how to do it while in a stressful situation.
