Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Values do all the work and color gets all the credit. A principle to remember.

Fun fact: Joni Mitchell was a painter before she was paid to write, produce and perform her own music. I saw in an interview that she would write music and then paint during her break. While she was painting she would let her mind produce a noise which would later be added to her music.

You are such an excellent teacher! I am currently switching from acrylic to oils and I am so totally grateful to have come across your channel. You have taught me so much (I totally binge watched almost all of your very informative videos LOL), and now I am confident enough to finally begin! I would have done everything wrong if it weren't for YOU hahah. Thank you so very very much for always encouraging us, going out of your way to teach us the correct way to do things, helping us figure things out, and also sharing your beautiful talent with us! I love this - I've been working with painting light and now I can't wait to get back to the easel. Question: At what point in the process do you step away from the reference photo? This is something else I've been working on: using the photo as simply reference and not getting sucked into trying to copy it exactly. Thanks for another great video!

    • @fanlmao6644

If you've copied the main idea you could replace the other details, like if it has no flowers just add one like that

Hi- this video has helped me in my painting, thank you. Out of curiosity do you do a rough sketch in pencil before you paint? What pencil do you use? And do you get all of your proportions lined up before painting or adjust as you go?

I feel like I have a good understanding of values however, sometimes my paintings feel flat and there is no depth.. wether I blur it (like bokeh in a photo) or use cooler chromas towards the background.. I really enjoy doing figurative hyperrealisim/ dark surrealism / low brow type stuff. Can you do a video on achieving depth and realism?? (besides a pep talk about values lol)

I feel most difficult part in A night scene is the objects visible partially in the dark area....like the car or the receding wall near car....that's toughest for me...if it's a warm colour wall and in the dark...how do you cool it?
