Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

When I heard you say "paint what you see", it reminded me of the best advice I ever got from an art teacher, which was, paint what you se not what you know. I know that the top of the cup is round, but what I see is an ellipse. I know that trees have individual leaves but what I see are blotches of different shades of green. I know that there are details in distant objects, but I can't see them. This advice has given me the ability to show depth in my painting.
im convinced all art teachers are the same becuase that is my teachers favourite quote, literally the amount of times she will say is amazing lmao but it rlly is such good advice
@@rah930 same, except it was my drawing teacher. :)
I know that trees have brown trunks and green leaves, but I see that they have gray trunks and yellow leaves.
My art teacher said the same!!! I tell everyone who asks me for art advice the exact line lol
@@cinderheart2720 YOOOOO
You're seriously wicked. Have never learned so much so quickly from one person 🙌🙌🙌
Thanks so much!
I agree
@Scott Robinson 🙄
That The Incredibles reference 😂
Can we just appreciate that this dude cut right to the point of the video? No promotions, no introductions
🙏 Amen! Very expedient. 👍 Love it!
Alternatively, I can also just remove my glasses
Seriously, I noticed today when I took off my glasses I could see big shapes of color so much better.
I’m nearly blind so this works really well

"Something is only bright as the dark around it." *Real Stoic Shit*
This one 11 minute video you did was more instruction than i got in 4 years of art school for a bachelor's degree.
I had the same experience at art school in the UK. It's wall-to-wall contemporary art now. Who needs four years for that?
Mad respect for the fact you just stated the entire thesis of the video in the first 5 seconds
I expect fluff but he smack me with the information I needed right away. Kuddos to you
Ain’t nobody got time for fluff
"I like to squint my eyes. It blurs everything, gets rid of detail."
Me without my glasses: °👄°
Lol but seriously thanks for the tips! I been wanting to paint with my goauche paints but got a little nervous to do so.
Wish me luck!
I hope it went well
Also- “ luck”
Finally, an advantage of being near sighted
Omg i laughed too hard at this °👄° HAHAHAHAHAH thank you for making my day 😂😂
@@alyssamaecampos4500 thanks!
hahahah that would be me too xD °👄° // hope your paintings went as planned!
I I have painted landscapes in oils for over 50 years, but it wasn't until very late in my career that I discovered "blocking in" and since, I can now do a painting, which used to take me 100 hours in probably 5 or 6 hours. You have stumbled upon a gold mine, son.
One other thing. I do my block in using acrylic, so it is dry within an hour or so. That maintains any possibe interest in certain portions of the picture, which I may have forgotten about, had I been forced to let the block in dry for a day or two.
So after doing your block in in acrylic, do you paint on it, in oils?
@@dianachophy yes
Really good explanations about values, blocking in and especially the palette knife technique of adding thick paint to make the painting look alive. Great vid. Thanks.
Thank you I really appreciate it
I’ve to to college art by only using pencil and coloured pencil and hating paint, this has helped me wrap my head around it! It’s not that bad...in fact quite fun
You're spot on. I've a little white "Scottie Dog" that I've painted sitting on a Naples yellow floor and I've lost count of how many coats of white I've put on that little dog to make it stand out properly. The yellow is not dark enough. I can see that now. So thank you very much. Bravo, take a medal out the bucket
Here's a tip that may be useful that I've just thought of I use "liquin" and I've noticed that it becomes solid when there is still a lot still left in the bottle. It's a nuisance and a waste. So I suddenly got the idea of sucking up the "liquin" with a hypodermic syringe and then giving my pallet a little squirt as and when required. It stays liquid when it's inside the syringe for days. And I use a "Walls ice cream box" with a hole drilled in it so that I can push the syringe's protective sheath into the hole. I can then store my syringe together with my brushes in the vertical position, thus saving space on my small worktop
Kind regards to all - Chris in Thailand
The 'values' seem to be the most challenging and useful points of this and his other videos. It looks like focusing on the 'values' concept will help us become better painters. Thanks mate!
value is everything in painting. you can add any crazy colours you want and experiment and the painting will still work so long as the tonal values are all correct
@Scott Robinson He has lightened the image in relation to the dark photo he is working from but all the values are still correct in relation to each other
If you want to learn values, make some charcoal studies followed by underpainting studies. Once you understand this concept, mixing colors and values won’t trick you.
Wow, as a teacher myself I really think this is a great video for starting any painting. Well done!
Thank you for all your videos. I am just getting started painting after a lifetime of dreaming about it. I very much appreciate your approach to painting and your clear and easy to understand explanations- very helpful. 👨🏻🎨
I’m so glad I could help!
This had been my all time trick.
Hands down, most gifted art teacher I’ve watched or listened to. Thank you, I will be signing up to the course.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I DO. I squint my eyes before painting & drawing all the time to help me refocus and stay motivated.
Now I squint my eyes on everything I watch =)))
Now I understand why so many great artists were working under the influence..it was all about just to make their vision blurrrr..
So grateful to find this channel. Everything is so structured and well presented
look at this man bringing advice with sources 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
He is really great . He knows his job well . God bless you .
This is single-handedly the most informative and educational painting technique & tradecraft video I have ever seen. Seriously! You're amazing. You have some lucky students.
Great tips there. I like this video too, he gets straight into it. Non of this excess chatter.. the first words out of his mouth were exactly what I wanted to hear.... great job. The squintty eye thing is a revelation , I can actually blurr my vision without squinting, (I'm not sure what's happening there but it gives me that unfocused blurred vision, and I can use that to see any colour areas).
Every time i watch this, i learned something new
thank you so much for immediately getting straight to the point
Thank you for explaining the layering. That's the first time I've heard it put that way. I think this will help with my oil painting process. 🙂
Your a very clear and informative teacher. Wish it was watercolor. I still get great tips. Thanks
Excellent videos. You hit all the major points for good painting technique. You sign-off should be, "I hope you got some values out of this video."
Wow! So glad TH-cam pulled you up for me. I am primarily a watercolour artist now, but started with oils and used only oils for many many oh heck many... years. I wish I had known about these things when I began. You are a fabulous teacher including giving others credit. You are clear, concise and honest and a fabulous artist. I can use the tips for watercolour too, but I hear my oils calling me.... planes and angles, sculpt the values.. love it!!! So helpful! Three cheers for YOU!
Wow! You are officially my new art teacher now.
man.... where have u been my whole life?..... So glad i found your channel.... AWESOME!!!!
Beautiful work and learned so much in such a short video. Thanks! No nonsense or bio background, straight to the point. TY!
Your videos are so engaging and easy to listen to and retain
So many gems here!
Love your painting tips about shapes
Thank you so much for this video you don't understand how much this video is helpful for me!!
You are so welcome!
Amazing lesson , amazing teacher .thank you
Really great video. Breaking down your process while the time-lapse passes is enlightening. Reading a subject as big abstract shapes is hard for me. Even with squinting. Practice comes progress.
Thank you for these daily videos! They're filled with so many great tips. Your schedule has to be completely packed to film and paint all the these videos.
You are so strong in basics of art...results speak of it🙏👏👏👏
I'm really glad I found your videos. I've been painting for years and I want to stop over working my paintings which dulls the colors and I want to lean towards more impressionist work and I am having a real problem with that. I really get a lot of good tips from your videos.
Ima use this for watercolor, too. Get me past feeling discouraged about my results. Thank you, Paint Coach!
super clear and helpful. you are a master teacher who makes understanding and immediate application easy.
You are a real coach bro!
God bless...
I appreciate that!
Thanks, Coach! I took a single oils class years ago that scared me into using acrylics for the last 15 years! Your instruction has changed that, and I'm so grateful for your clear, honest, and helpful direction! THANK YOU! SUBSCRIBED!
That’s awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Miss Megan, may I ask you why oils were scary to you?
I wish you taught color pencils-almost everything you have said in your videos I have applied to my color pencil work and I am getting MUCH better. Unfortunately the light on top of dark doesn't translate well to pencil work, but the stress on tones and values is something I can apply in my layer and blending work. If you know of a good color pencil teacher please recommend
You are GORGEOUS and an artist...win win.
Over the years being self taught ive painted in many different techniques and approaches but this is also how i do most of my work. I see it as finding the mid tonal value then blocking in with that and then working into that with darks and lights (if working alla prima then have to mix your colours accordingly knowing they will be mixed into the midtone. ie make the mid value darks a bit darker than usual with the knowledge that youll be blending it into the midtone thats already down )
So helpful, THANKFUL FOR YOU!!
This video inspired me to try digital painting for the first time and I busted out a really rad drawing, thank you so much!
Thank you for this video. I gave up painting two weeks ago, and i'm glad i stumbled upon your video. It makes me wanna paint again :D
that squinting tip is super helpful!
Never thought I would ever watch someone painting a avocado. This was very interesting Chris.
Thanks for another top demo.
Well it’s Australia Day today, soon be time to throw a prawn on the barbie.😎🇦🇺
After I’ve recovered ( probably tomorrow ) I’ll hit the easel.
Thanks again. Dave M ( Australia).😎🇦🇺🦘🦐
Your video was absolutely mindblowing. All I can say is wow, wow, wow, thank you so much for sharing...
this was really cool thank you. I sent it to my friend who has to paint for his color theory. I think it'll help him
Great video, thank you!! I got the book "Landscape Painting Inside & Out " used, on line, and it's amazing. Love your tutorials and teaching, you're amazing.
Thank you so much for all the information and tips! They are really helpful!
'Scrub-in your darks, Laydown your whites' Best advice for Oil newbies.
such an informative video, i knew about blocking big shapes and trying to get rid of details but it's really difficult especially when you try focusing on the reference and keep noticing this, this, and that then you get a headache afterwards and everything turns into a huge blob mess. I have never once thought of squinting my eyes to understand the reference so i literally am exited to paint again now, Thank you so much!
Serious respect ! Your a blessing to the art community sharing your knowledge !!! Thank you for what you do!!!
Wow! You explained this concept really well and it was understandable!!
Awesome tips man!! Thanks for this incredible and free resource.
Excellent video. So many helpful ideas. Thank you. It's brilliant.
Concise and on point, yet so much more! Very helpful...thank you👍👍
Chris I feel like I know you. Sometimes when painting I’ll try something I learned from you and then catch myself saying “damnit Chris” as if you’re there with me. Ha!
*This helped a lot. Thank you very much!*
Great video the second you said it, it clicked. even Vector artists do it that way
Think's. Very beautiful videos👍
Lots of good easy examples to live by in this little video. You earned your self a subscribe from me. Look forward to the rest of your videos.
Great content. I'm into digital art but I believe this technique still applies.
2:00 your technique really reminds me of the photoshop posterize filter. i do the same thing, but never really thought much about it. great video!
Love when he say : " avocado "
(iOS) I get whatever reference image I’m going to use and then edit it on the photo app itself by increasing the noise reduction to the max; it tremendously help to focus on overall color rather than detail.
This is the most helpful video! I am an art teacher but my biggest challenge is oil paints
Glad it was helpful!
Every time he says squint your eyes I squint my eyes at everything
Those two books are solid gold!
They really are! The best
Thank you so much!! Your videos have really helped me!!
Wowooooo! Very useful. Thank you. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Really helpful! You helped me get to the next step- thank you! Your work is beautiful
Glad I could help!
Awesome tutorial, .Are you using acylic or oil.I have to watch your video once more.I use pastel this way and I work on at least 3 paintigs at a time, only to save on wasting paint.I have a trick as well.At lowes they have sample beher paint.you can have them mix your colors, works like acrylic. Stay well. Im developing arthritis now.10 surgeries between my hands. They cramp on me 🙄👍😁👏👏👏👏🌟
This is so helpful. Thanks for sharing.
Very insightful! Thanks!
Seriously great video.. the flow of information and advice really helped me easily grasp what you're saying. You helped me understand how to approach and be a little looser with my painting. Thank you!
thanks for just getting to the point
THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH
Thank you ❤
THANK You so much!!!
You are the best teacher! I wonder how this technique can be applied to watercolor since you can’t add lights to darks.
If anyone knows how to use a technique like this one with watercolor I would appreciate it so much. Thank you!
Wow both him and his work are beautiful - God really picked his favourites
Cool!!! Always wondered why people would something do as a underlining picture..now I understand why ahahaha thank you that was really helpful and I'll try it the next time
Your awesome! Thank you!!
Just found you this morning. This was SO helpful! Thank you!!
dude this was insanely helpful thank you so much
so glad you created a course! Also thank you fro making it so affordable.
Thank you this video really helps simplify the painting experience. 👍
Also if we hv an artist we love and would like your insight on how they do what they do can we request future videos? That would be awesome.
Thank you so much for this well spoken inspiration, time to paint!
