Oh my gosh! I purchased a vintage Harley Davidson leather purse backpack. I opened the box and the smell hit me so hard. Goodness so bad. I will do baking soda and cold winter garage! Thank you for this info.
Thanks!! You’re the first one I found when doing research. I just got a second-hand Coach leather sling bag today in the mail (unsure of the model name). I knew it had a strong perfume stink inside & a busted loop, but I believe in second chances. 😊 Barely long after beginning your video, I immediately stuck it, still in its box into a closet. It stinks badly. But I look forward to rehabbing it with your tips. Thank you very much!! Subscribed.
Thank you so much this was super helpful! I bought a Loewe bag preloved back in November that had a very musty smell that was not disclosed. I really liked the colour, it was from quite a few seasons ago, and apart from the smell I was very happy with it and wanted to keep it. After watching your video I bought some baking soda and I'm pleased to report that it worked after about 4 applications. It took away all the unpleasant smell and I know that fresh air and my handling/using the bag will take care of the rest which is extremely faint and probably just me being super sensitive. I'm so pleased, baking soda is so inexpensive and non-toxic, and is just magical. Thank you again for sharing this knowledge.
Thank you for the tips! This may work on some type of leather but tried this, and more tips from so many other videos and sources in a Chanel WOC in caviar. I have to say after my experience that cigarette smell on Chanel caviar leather is impossible to get rid off. It’s been almost a year and the smell is still there. I bought it preloved and it’s beautiful but the smells kills it for me. The one thing I haven’t tried is sending it the leather surgeons for ozone treatment that can help but not guarantee. I have someone interested in buying it that does not mind about the smell. It’s a Tiffany blue 19C… not sure if I’ll regret it!
On all coach bags you can pull out the lining so it’s flat then put it on the counter on a towel and spray upholstery foam designed for automobiles on your lining then scrub away with a little plastic scrubber then take a damp microfibre cloth and pull off any residue wait for it to dry and you will most likely remove most odours … may need a second treatment… always let dry overnight… works really well for me
BIG thank you dear 💗💗💗 This was very informative and HELPFUL indeed. Thanks so much for sharing. I am going to try them on my smelly bag. Take care my dear friend 😘
This was very helpful! I have 2 bags that are nice but have that faux leather smell and never thought to use baking soda and the methods you used! Thank you!
Will try this today! I just received my dream YSL bag (2-year obsession) that was curiously mis-listed as a different bag by the longtime seller. I opened the shipping box last night and was knocked back by the “basement” smell. My original concerns about it being authentic have been replaced by concerns about the odor and how long this has lived below ground. Fingers crossed this does the trick - I got it for an incredible deal.
Congrats on your new bag! (which one is it??) But oh no, what a shame about the smell. I really hope my methods work for you. Please tell me how it turns out!
@@classicswithaquirk The LouLou Top Handle bag in black. The bag just never caught fire - it was dwarfed by other LouLou designs, I think. It looks a lot like the “Kelly” that Chanel (yes) put out a few times that also flew under the radar. The seller listed it as a Toy LouLou; I lost out on the first auction and it was re-listed after the original winner didn’t pay. I got it for less than $900, which is ... shocking. 😲🤗👏 Will let you know how it works out!
@@emiliabolsas I'm familiar with the Chanel kelly! You're right that it's definitely not as popular as their other bags. That's a great price for your bag! Really hope you're able to get that smell out 🤞
@@classicswithaquirk Update: Bag was not authentic. ☹️ There were a couple of oddities when I opened the box but didn’t want to assume it was not real. This might also explain why the musty smell was so strong, too. The seller said he was under the impression when he acquired it that it was real. That said, I was very pleased with realauthenrication.com and the eBay return and refund process for a non-authentic good. I’ll take my chance again in the future but will definitely wait for a while before I do it again!.
Oh no! What a disappointment, I’m so sorry. But I’m glad you were able to find out and get your money back! Your perfect dream bag is out there though 🤞
I just got a Chanel jumbo navy calfskin with silver hardware. It's beautiful, but stinks!! Seller did not disclose. There is a 30 day return. I'm hoping this works! Thanks!!! Your vintage Chanel bag is gorgeous!!
Im a smoker. And recently noticed how bad all my designer bags smell in my closet. I put them all in a bin for now i put sachets bags in my closet for now. It helps a little bit. But i definitely have to clean each purse by hand. Ugh
i wonder if freezer might damage vintage leather.. I just got a nylon-leather Lady Dior bag & musty smell is horrible. I‘m going to try baking soda i'm hesitant to put it in the freezer I also tried coffee beans & airing out method on my other bag, which has very strong perfume smell & didn't really work so far. Have you tried alcohol, such as vodka? I read that could help too
I haven't put a vintage leather bag in the freezer myself, though I an imagine that the only way it would get damaged is if there were wetness and freezing. Cold by itself can't harm leather unless it's SEVERE cold. Airing out can take several months for a very musty smelling bag :( good luck to you!
Hey there! New to your channel and subscribed. I just received a bag where odor was not disclosed as well- mine is a totally pm Louis Vuitton bag. Mine has a very very strong old person (no offense) and musty smell, I’m trying to get smell out before I decide if I’m returning or not. Not sure if $300 for an older bag with some cracking of handles and smell is worth it. Not sure. Do you have anymore tips for an older person smell to a bag/musty? I’ll try your tricks thank you!
Personally im blasting my backpack that has that kinda smell with a fan, near a window. one fan blasting the inside of the open bag, the other venting everything outside. we'll see if it works. Edit: Seems to be working pretty good. In a couple days the smell was greatly diminished, however I am considering letting it sit longer to totally eliminate it.
Thank you! This was such a huge help in getting rid of an odor in my pre-loved Balenciga XXS Bazar Tote. I just bought and received a LV Idylle Romance Hobo in the Mini Lin material. It's in very good condition. If you have any suggestions on how to just give the material a nice clean, that would be much appreciated. Thank you!
I'm so glad to hear it helped! As for the mini lin material, you can try a very mild soap/water mixture and gently scrubbing with a toothbrush, then wipe over with a damp cloth
I bought a Kate spade purse from eBay very cheap. No wonder no one bid . But me. At first it smelled like cookies. So I didn’t mind. I took it to target . Shopping and the smell was so bad. Lingering. Made me nashous. I can imagine what people were thinking. It smells like it came from a Hindu lady. The lady was white. She swears she is the only owner. And she can’t smell it. I’m very sensitive. I smelled curry and garlic ginger smell. I don’t know what is going on. It wrecks of Indian spices. So I’m going to try your method. Hope it works. Thank you so much 😊
I have a coat that I recently bought that smells like marijuana. I don't smoke marijuana but I know what it smells like.. Some say it's caused by the tanning process of the hide.. Can you explain to me how to get to smell out of my coat? I'm kind of thinking the person that I bought it from smokes. Ty
I would expect a scent like that to come from a smoker, not the tanning process, especially if it's a preloved coat. Coats a harder to dissipate smell from because there's usually a lot of padding that the smell can penetrate. If it were colder, I'd suggest leaving it in a cold garage to air out for a while, but right now you could try the baking soda or charcoal method.
Cigarette smell is tough, but I managed it with the tote. I let it air out for several days in a cold garage (that's why the freezer also works, but I understand not wanting to stick your bag in the freezer!) and then put it in a sealed container with a box of baking soda. I've heard aquarium charcoal works really well too, but I haven't used it.
I have some boots that have a strong chemical smell that i think could be gasoline. I know that these methods work because they kill bacteria. Since this isn’t a biological smell I don’t know what to do. They have been airing out in the garage for a month and still smell.
I know it sounds crazy, but I would try the freezer method. Just keep in mind that a heavy perfume smell might take a while to dissipate. It took about a month for me to get a strong cigarette smell out of a bag, but it's possible!
You can put the baking soda in a coffee filter and tie it with an elastic to make a sachet .. worked very well for my vintage dooney
I just did that for one of my bags

I want to rid scarf of musk perfume smell? I will try the freezer method?
I think it would work well, for a scarf! Just make sure it’s completely dry before putting it in the freezer, so it doesn’t have ice form on it 😊
Would this work in Gucci leather and canvas ,? Cigarettes smell :(
