I learned to spey/skagit cast with a 13' foot 7 wt and a 540 grain skagit line. I taught myself on the upper North Umpqua river in southern Oregon, not an easy river. It took me two seasons to get my first winter steelhead.
If I could go back in time I would have started learning this type of casting on a single-hand rod and a micro skagit, starting with a 9' or 10' foot 6 wt. When you have much less rod and line weight to cast, you develop an understanding of the physics of casting faster, because you're not spending all your time fighting the awkwardness of the 2-hander. I don't know why you don't hear this advice more often. Starting with a long rod and heavy line is like teaching someone to Olympic lift but starting at their max, it really makes no sense.
When you get into single-hand-spey fishing, and then you get good, you can still cast a heavy streamer and sink tip. Then you go back to a switch or your 2-handed long rod and it's a breeze!

Great video guys. I started spey fishing for Steelhead about 3 years ago but have been Steelheading for what seems like a lifetime with a 8wt single hand rod. I really like you talk about reading the water which is so important. I hate seeing anglers pooching the wrong water well maybe not more good water for me 😅My passion is Steelheading.. and now with a spey rod. My buddy lives in Aberdeen WA and doesn't fish yep that's what I said and I will never understand. Anyway enjoyed the video.. got me wanting to head to the rivers.

How do you decide what flies to use meaning primarily weighted versus unweighted .....
Do you add extra weight or just switch sink tip

If it’s deep I fish a heavy fly, if it’s shallow I fish a lighter fly. I almost never change sink tips. Sink 3/5 SA TC sink tip.

Never seen anyone speycast off the left shoulder,always tack hand. If you learn to throw off both shoulders,single and double spey, nothing can stop you.I find the single spey, has the most economy of movement. Spey casting distance competition, always use a single spey.

Single Spey with the proper line for the job is amazing. When we’re throwing a lot of big tips and bugs in the winter we choose more double Spey or Pokes!
