    Glad I found this instruction. Transferring over from single hand to spey, this answered a lot of questions and pointed me in the right direction of working the rest out with the experience to come. Like the method of instruction without the embellishments, pragmatic gets the message across. Thank you.

    Hi Joe 😁
    Just have to give you 👍
    Very informative video for new guys to this sport !
    And the gear today is just stunning good !
    The only is to match them up in a good manner....
    I fish 10,6 and 11,6 as switch rod. And skagit lines really shine on those light rods. I made my own switch rod back in 1991 of a 11,3' single hand rod 7/8# IM6 blank from Germany. Still have that rod and I'm love the action of that blank. It's a medium/fast progressive action.
    When I did live in USA some years ago. I swung flies for trout and steelhead whit the same rod. Mostly use a Hardy favourite 4" click & pawl and 35lbs mono shootingline. That been my go to setup !
    Glad you so serious for new customers 🙏 that's awesome! So from a 1/4 turn of globe away!
    Best regards from Scandinavia and Sweden 🇸🇪

    Excellent walk through. It is amazing how far the spey rods and lines have progressed over the last 20-30 years. I remember making my first head out of 12wt DT and 15ft of type 4 sinking line from SA.

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, cannibalizing lines to make Skagit heads. I never had to do that, but man the gear has come a long ways. My first line was a RIO Windcutter Spey. That was tough to learn on!

    • @SledorFish
      @SledorFish 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@redsflyshop The Windcutter was my first manufactured line. I went back to building my own because it wasn't as good as the home built lines. I am happy to have all the nice Skagit lines that are made now but I would gladly go back to hacking and splicing if we could have the runs of steelhead we had in the 90's.

    Joe, your videos continue to be an inspiration to keep getting better at fly fishing. Have you all at Red’s given any thought to doing a single hand Spey set up video? 6wt and what line set up you would use if you just wanted to single hand Spey. If theirs no audience for it I totally understand

      I haven't done a video on SHS setups in quite some time. It's quite easy however, you can run a 250 grain OPST Commando with a T-8 tip and Slick Shooter running line and you'll be rockin!

    Very informative and helpful. I get so lost trying to figure out how to set up a spey reel. One question, how much running line do I need to spool on? I’m using a 5 weight reel. Thanks and keep up the great videos

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. You need about 50' minimum of running line for most practical intents and purposes. Some anglers buy mono running line such as the OPST Lazar Line that comes in 50M spools and they will use half for a season, then use the other half.

    Great video, one Q, does the Rio Elite Switch Chucker requre a tip or straight to tippet ? #4 Rio Elite Switch Chucker is 325grains and the tip has some weight, so are we not getting to heawy regarding to #4 Sage trout spey G5 and #4 Rio Elite Switch Chucker ? Meaning when fishing lakes or upstream nymph fishing ...

    • @coreygolphenee9633
      @coreygolphenee9633 ปีที่แล้ว

      Floating poly leaders or tips are kind of needed to upstream nymph depending on the setup, that switch chucker should work fine with a floating poly leaders

  • @milosbozilovic7843
    @milosbozilovic7843 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks a lot for the informations. Can i use the floating tip on an intermediate shooting head, in order to stay in the upper section of the water? Or what do you recommend for intermediate shooting head not to sink to deep,but not use just a leader as you said it would be too light. Thanks

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can do that for sure, but you might not like how it casts as the floating tip may not "grip" the water the way a sink tip will but I don't see why not. If possible, best to buy an Intermediate sinking tip.

  • @OPSteel97
    @OPSteel97 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best fly fishing videos out there, thanks Joe. Question: in this video you say shooting heads for the trout speys are 12-15’, but Rio’s Elite Trout Spey shooting head is 23’. Do think this will cast okay on a Winston 10’6” 3wt?

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      That line is more of a "Scandi" style designed to use without sink tips. Essentially a 12' Skagit Head and a 10' sink tip = 22' total. Similar to the line you are referring to. Very good question. The RIO Elite Trout Spey is best used for small flies like soft hackles and very small streamers without use of fast sinking tips.

  • @Detroit3Pistons
    @Detroit3Pistons 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video as always Joe! Why do you use a Surgeons Knot and not a Perfection loop to attach the leader to the Tip section?

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok, Surgeon's Loop. I confused myself there for a moment. I find in light line a Surgeon's Loop holds much better than a Perfection Loop. I'll use the PL on leaders 20# on up, especially when I get into big stiff saltwater tippet. On light stuff, I've just found the TSL to be a better knot.

    Good information, however, where I live I really don’t have but 1 river I can swing flies on. How can I set up my 9’ 6wt rod to effectively swing small streamers with a Spey cast?

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that's easy Jeff, we do that as well. You can put a 200 Grain OPST Commando Smooth on that rod, with 7.5' Commando Sink Tips. Money. Here is a link to our OPST products. We tend to favor these for single hand spey applications. redsflyfishing.com/collections/opst-lines-tips

    How long should my sink tip be ? If I have a 11 or 12 foot 3-5 wt rod and as you said a 12-15ft shooting head? So it’s not too long and too heavy ?

    • @redsflyshop

      Sink tips for that rod should be 10-12', but no shorter. You could even run a sink tip as long as 15'. Great question!

    Rod weights for spey rods are always confounding for me. I have a Sage G5 trout spey 4113-4 wt rod that a Rio video says it's comparable to a single-handed fly rod in the 4 wt category. I'm actually okay with it being in the 4 to 6 wt range either way (for mid to large trout). So I/m putting a 325gr, 16' Skagit tip on it and I'll see how it goes first with lighter flies. I guess there really is no 'formula' for spey rod weights like there is for single handed rods. So would you say it varies by manufacturer?

    • @coreygolphenee9633
      @coreygolphenee9633 ปีที่แล้ว

      It definitely does, and thankfully most modern rods will give you the grain window on the rod, back in the day it was more of a crapshoot

      Backing-running line-shooting head-sink tip-tippet. And if you use opst lazar line then half the Lazar line running line is enough.
