so stoked to see jordan working with you guys! Glad he is gaining traction with his youtube channel his videos helped me so much once I started niching down into mostly metal production.
I expected another Waves hyped advertisement, but there are actually some really useful tricks shown, regardless of actual plugin used, thx for sharing the vid! :)
I've been mixing long enough that Waves was pretty much "the" plugin creator when I started. So that's why my workflow is so dominated by Waves plugins.
Hi TzzSmk, yes, many people have grown up with particular plug ins, such as Waves who were the first high quality third party manufacturer! However, there are of course other great companies, it really comes down to what works for you! Many thanks Warren
For metal, the most important is c6, to remove the thump when the guitars chug and palm mute. L1 to keep stuff in your face, slap delay to fatten vox, Depending on the drummer, some sort of trigger (sorry Glenn), saturation for the bass DI to make it audible, and most important of all: a good low cut filter for everything but the bass!
I love the odd metal band but wouldn't say I'm a "metal guy." However, the odd tid bits on punchyness are handy points for when a non-metal gets "heavy." Not a bad video at all.
Love this. I use 5/6 of these on every mix. Jordan's mixing class turned my world upside down, I can draw a dividing line through my discography between things I made before and things I made after taking his classes. It's night and day.
I'm not even a metal guy, but I've been enjoying Jordan's content for a while now. He's one of those guys who doesn't even need to demonstrate something in a session. Just listen to what he says. Greggory Scott is another you just listen to and learn so much from.
I am glad to see someone use the SSL channel as much as me. I like the SSLG the most out of the two though always thought that was a great emulation that Waves has done.
Jordan's channel is the best. He gets to the point, always uses audio instead of rambling on, and he's mixed some serious artists like he did in this video.... HOW MANY TIMES have you clicked on a mixing video and the song example is some terrible garage band?
I went Brainworx instead of Waves for the SSL channel but it's probably the biggest game changer in my mixes in the last decade! And for some reason having both 9/10 times the E channel works better than the G for me
@@Producelikeapro Great video btw! I have to agree with every one of these plugins though I use other variants (Fabfilter/Slate/UVI etc.) for the same things, but the workflow tips are invaluable!
Glenn is a great entertainer, has epic scripts, and video production skills. He's second to none in those categories and I genuinely enjoy is channel. But Creative Live, URM, and Jordan are the best resources I've found for rock and metal production.
This video brought to you by "Waves!" Haha J/K man. Though I think 4 of 6 were Waves plug-ins. Anyway great video and solid advice/tips. I've learned so much from this channel and every "guest host" has been top notch and helpful!.
I use plugins that do similar jobs, but mostly different plugins. I favor bx_console N to Waves SSL both for it's sound and the TMT, but I'm using it to do the same job. BX again with the townhouse instead of the Waves SSL comp. I used to use C6, but these days I find it faster and easier to use the Omnichannel for multiband compressor, because I'm often doing the same thing: fixing one or two bands not 4 or 6 and the DS2 makes that really easy. I use a huge variety of saturation plugins, and purposely try to mix them up in a mix to get different tones, not a different one for every channel, but still. I use a couple of tape plugins including IK's and the UA Studer. Decapitator and Radiator from Soundtoys are both awesome. The Arturia 1073 emulation is really good at taming transients and distorts in a really nice way. True Iron is awesome for weight.
i did the blind test on gearslutz and what i thought was the waves, my least favorite, was actually the townhouse. made me stop lusting after it immediately!
Anyone have experience with Jordans courses? I was interested but couldn't afford it at the time. Considering that or URM academy or produce like a pro
I also own most of his courses, and to me it's worth every penny. Tons of bonus content, Q&A's, mix vault of plenty of multi tracks for practicing, all his drum samples, etc... I think he only offers all the courses together now, but his courses hit everything; from start to finish, tracking->editing->mixing. For me personally the tracking and editing courses were invaluable to my progress.
The waves’ SSL bus Comp is a great one but be careful as you use it! I’ve discovered that it exaggerated the upper mid frequencies(around 3k) and it can easily get brutal...
Crazy that SSL channel strip is essentially a simple 3 band eq and so many people swear by it like it does something magical.... It would seem any that any graphuc or parametric eq should do the same for you.
Thank you Sir Warren. Good call using his talent! Effective. Did you get my email about "Ballinthejack" Paperback? I'm now a Paperback Writer! You'll find the Internet and digital music history section interesting...(on Amazon) BALLINTHEJACK
Is the illustration on Jordan's T-shirt with the M, C, S and H a reverence to the "production whiteboard?" I've seen this whiteboard often in behind the scenes photo's, but no one ever answered me the meaning of the letters that are added into the crossed off rows (songs/instruments) during production that note which parts are recorded for each song. I'd really love to learn the philosphy and technique behind this recording "administration." Warren could you please do a video sgement about the studio Whiteboard that keeps track of the production process?
Quick question: what is the reason you print down the Trigger2 tracks to an audio file before continueing with the plugin processing? couldnt you just continue with plugin processing on the same track right after Trigger2 plugin? what is the advantage of this approach?
I know this is 2 years late but… it’s to commit to the sample just like you would commit to a guitar tone. Plus it saves on CPU to not have the sample live triggering as well.
a very good alternative to the Slate Trigger is the Plugin "apTrigga". Cost 69$ and does its job pretty well. Ok this one doesn't come with Samples, but tbh i don't like the Slate Samples anyway.
Buster by Analog Obsession sounds as good or better than Waves SSL Bus comp and it has more features (HPF SC, mix knob, oversampling). I find the Waves one has a narrowing effect on the stereo field and is harsh. Good action, so-so transients. It's not heaps worse than other plugin compressors but it's down there. Buster's controls are weird and the timing constants don't sound quite right, but the tone, imaging and transients are all better.
Probably a nwb question here, but would you use saturation on guitar parts that have also been double tracked? I feel like beefing up guitars both ways would add too much protein and overpower the mix...
No, I'd say NLS is more a colour tool then full on crazy saturation imo. A good alternative is Audio Assault's Head Crusher. Its pretty much a clone of Decapitator and is currently on sale for like $7? Really good plug too! That said I do really like the waves NLS just not something I'd reach for heavy saturation purposes.
Check out Airwindows for ITB saturation. Density, HardVacuum, SingleEndedTriode, Focus, Tape, ToTape6, BussColors4, Desk4, OneCornerClip. All free, low CPU, & great sounding. And if you want actual Non-Linear Summing in the box (and not saturation plus tone curves marketed as "summing") check out Airwindows Console6! Truly amazing.

Actually the ssl channel and slate trigger are pretty cool and helpful for a metal mix. I love them ssl s
