  • This Chinese community in Nanjing China was born in the 1980's at a time of massive economic and cultural change in China. I explore some vintage buildings from the 1980's, take a look at the community square, local food, recycling and back alleys and other interesting places in this unique community alongside Nanhu East Road in Nanjing.

I like how you learned Chinese and interact with the locals. Most foreigners do not do that so keep learning Chinese and you will speak like a native soon.

The whole community and buildings look like a museum - remind me of the vibe and atmosphere in the 1970s in Singapore. We could hardly see those now due to rapid commercial development. Love your unpretentious video.

In 1982, I met a Chinese student from mainland China. She's the first Chinese I knew!!!
In fact we were not allowed to read or know anything anout China. I could only find books about old China. I often wondered what China and a modern Chinese look like!
In 1971, I found 2 books with pictures
of Chinese Communes by a Swede. I saw happy faces, people working and a pretty young girl wearing village clothes and laughing.
Its not till a decade later that I joined
SACU - Society for Anglo Chinese Understanding and really got to know about China and met the brilliant students.

That's fascinating. So Chinese students started to study abroad in the 80's ?. It must have been really interesting to find out and see those books showing life in China back then. I'd love to go back in time and experience life then, I like the idea of a simpler village lifestyle but I know it came with a lot of difficulties too. I haven't heard about the SACU before, it sounds interesting. Is SACU based in Manchester ?

Hi, Adam. Chinese students started to study abroad since 1978, in the early days, most of them were sent by the government or received overseas scholarships, mainly to the United Kingdom, the United States, West Germany, and Japan (the Chinese government had been sending students to the Soviet Union from the 1950s to the mid-1960s). If you haven't heard about the SACU before, have you heard that "Jane Eyre" and the BBC teaching program "Follow Me" etc., were once popular in China?
Wonderful video, coupled with eloquent narrative. Thank you indeed the life in the alleys your presented bringing us many good memories.

I was born in 1973 , that’s exactly what my memory in Shandong Province, the magazine (mass movie) , the old TV set , the slogan “ learn from Leifeng “(a moral model who always work hard and happy to help others) etc . People in that time are not rich but no stress, government pays for apartments , schools, seeing the doctors, most of things are free including universities until usa and the west world made a lot of sanction on China in 1990 , and market economy started in 1992 , everybody has to pay a lot of bills since then
