As a Dutchie 🇳🇱 I am super proud of Davina and this production. She is an excellent performer, this song has great meaningful lyrics, and the video and stage production are over the moon. The video was filmed in NL and features our high water defences (we are largely below sealevel). This makes the production a real Dutch powerhouse. With Davina as our star!
One of the coolest performances I've ever seen. They used augmented reality for the special effects, to create the illusion of being under water. The more times you watch the video the more you'll see. It's just stunning.

The winning country gets to host the contest the next year, but because of covid it got canceled in 2020. luckily this year it is happening (with audience!!) and The Netherlands stil get to host it. The song really is about two things, One: The fact so many in the world lack water, whilst others have more than an abundance of water and that we should try to share. Two: The horrors the Dutch have suffered from said water, the Disaster, yes for us in The Netherlands it's The Disaster(Watersnoodramp) of 1953, after a severe storm the sea defences of the Netherlands failed and almost 2000 people lost their lives due to the floods. After this, we Dutch decided to never again allow this to happen and we constructed the worlds largest and most elaborate sea surge defence system ever, called the Deltawerken(Delta Works) and the Zuiderzeewerken(Zuiderzee Works) which turned the Zuiderzee into the IJsselmeer(Lake IJssel) and created the land now called Flevoland, which is 545 sq miles of land conquered from the ocean. Nowadays many Dutch companies build dams and surge protections all over the world and even reclaim/conquer land from the ocean, for example in Dubai and we are regarded as the best hydro engineers in the world, which we all have to thank to our historical struggles with water and our connection to it. Hope I was able to elaborate it a little bit :D

The Netherlands has the best water management system in the world since it is the only country in the world that is below sea level. The video shows the imporant relationship between the country and the massive destructive force of water.
This barrier is 3 km away from my camping. We cycle a lot there, it's very beautiful. This song represents the struggle of the dutch against the water. Mostly our friend and sometimes our enemy. In the past many people were killed in this struggle.

The cool thing about this is that this song symbolizes the Dutch fight to keep the water out of the country. Between 6:25 and 7:00, the construction Thekla Reuten is on is the Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier: the biggest storm surge barrier in the World. It takes about 86 minutes to close it down, so I guess the production team must have been very nice to the Dutch Water Institute.
Many major European rivers reach the ocean at the Netherlands' shoreline, which means that a big part of the country has basically always been one big, flat, soaked river delta. About a third of the country even lies below sea level. However, because of the steady climate and abundance of fresh water, it's been one of the most attractive places to live and therefore one of the most densely populated areas of Europe (the Netherlands is the 5th most densely populated country in Europe after city states like Vatican City, Monaco and San Marino and an island like Malta). You can already do the math: low lying land + lots of water + lots of people = maaaaaaany issues when the sea level rises or storms hit our shores.
At that point, the Dutch government said that enough was enough and they came up with a plan to prevent a flooding of the size of the 1953 flood to ever happen again in the next 10,000 years (yes, you read that right). A team of architects came up with an incredibly gigantic system of surge barriers, water locks, sluices and levees - 14 in total - that can manipulate the seas the way the Dutch want and not the other way round. This plan was called the Delta Plan. Just to give an idea of how enormous the construction was: they started building them when my dad was born and it was't finished until I was six years old: over 40 years and it cost around 13 billion dollars. But it was worth it, because with the impending rising of the sea level due to climate change, the Netherlands will know that it is able to withstand a rise of 4 meters by 2200. The one in the video is the biggest one of the 14 Delta Works.
This contest "Songfestival" started after the second world war. It was an effort to re-unite Europe (1956-05-24). The first was in Lugano (7 countries also Germany participate). The winner may host the next year. Last year was prosponed - Covid - thats why our Country, the Netherlands, where the host of 2021!

I liked the underwater part. Its very symbolic and reminded me of the painting "the creation of adam". Just like God gives live to Adam....the water is a Godly force of nature that gives live to us all. It should be respected as such not just feared or used.
