    FINALLY an honest in depth video on composting toilets! Definitely was a subject to discuss and to some it may be awkward but hey we are all human and we all do the same "business" and the truth needed to be said. Thank you for producing honest and entertaining videos on tiny house living.

    I have been using a Nature's Head composting toilet in my 38 foot 5th wheel RV for 9 years. I use peat moss that I buy at Home Depot or Menards. The urine goes into a separate bottle which is dumped as needed. I like a composting toilet as opposed to having to dump a black water tank periodically as i like to camp off the grid when I can. I installed solar panels on my trailer roof and live very comfortably.

    Very informative and honest, so I’ll be honest as well and admit that any toilet not hooked up to plumbing, like a conventional toilet, would be a “no thank you” for me.

    Thanks, this was very helpful. I have a SunMar at my offgrid cabin and it's been an utter disaster. Mostly due to the poor handling of the liquids. This seems like a far better solution. Question - you mention your daughter - how do the kids do with this? You mention that you have to clean the "rainbows" off the various parts of the internal housing - are the kids the biggest offenders in this regard?

    You did a great job walking us through this. Awesome information!
    Question
    Is menstruation solid or liquid?

    • @trailheadtiny

      I would definitely say solid! The cedar shavings help with absorption.

      @@trailheadtiny I believe it. I used to use pine horse pellets as kitty litter. Worked best, lasted longer, and MUCH cheaper. 👍

    What about the pee? How do you deal with the pee? Where does that go???

    • @trailheadtiny

      Thankfully I don’t have to even think about the pee because it joins my gray water line and gets diluted by my sink and shower water. No weird pee jug to deal with!!!

  • @ruthanneflear3122

    Where does the pee go? Into grey water? Or do you have to drain a bucket?

    • @trailheadtiny

      Exactly. The urine diverted line joins the gray water line so I don’t even have to think about that, thankfully!

      @@trailheadtinydoes your grey water goes to the city sewer?

  • @dani_mack

    Wait. There's no composting medium in the bucket?!? I have an OGO in my van and use coconut coir. The OGO has a mechanical mixer. You can push the button while you're still seated and never have to actually see any poop. 👍🏼

    • @trailheadtiny

      Not with this particular model. Also I don’t actually compost this as of yet. There are no services in my area so for now it is just going out as regular waste.

    OMG...I can't believe what you have to do re: the toilet. I would have to wear a mask and rubber gloves when taking the plastic bag out. Or possibly go full Hazmat!😂 For me... life is to short...and God forbid I never have a flushing toilet
