There used to be a direct Amtrak/VIA train from Chicago to Toronto, but I understand that service was shut down some time ago. I wonder, however, if it would be possible to take an Amtrak train from Chicago to Detroit or Port Huron, MI, then a bus/taxi/ferry across the border, then a VIA train from Windsor or Sarnia, ON to Toronto? That method would seem more comfortable than a direct Greyhound bus over that route, and less time-consuming than Amtrak Chicago-NYC + Amtrak/VIA NYC-Toronto.

Michael, do you live in Canada or United States? Do you have relatives or friends who live in New York? I wanted to take a train trip from Ottawa via Montreal to New York, but my father would not let me. He thinks that it is best to go to New York by bus with an organized group. However, I definitely do not want to go to United States with the cases of coronavirus being so high there. Have they cancelled train trips from Toronto or Montreal to New York because the Canada and U.S. Border are closed for unessential travel?

Always good to hear 'La Langue Maternal et Official du Union International du Chemain de Fer. [UIC]' being used. And that Engineering detours are the same on Amtrak/VIA as on SNCF/ SNCB-NMBS and Network Rail! - I did this journey in October 2000. I remember the Canadian bit was easy but the service at the US Border an absolute pain in the arse with rude and judgemental border staff despite being from a country that is the US's biggest ally in global politics and trade and that back then I had my Tourist/Business Visa for 30 days pre-issued by the US consulate in London. - why I prefer visiting Canada these days. less hassle. Pity as I have lots of track bashing and tourist plans for North East Corridor.

As long as you have no criminal record, you'll get into the USA well, although the behavior of USINS officials is abominable. The reason for the 'delay' is because of the perception that Canada was where the 9/11 terrorists came through, therefore what friendly open border(s) we had no longer exist.

That is too bad that next time you'll fly. You need to know what to expect when riding the train, especially trains in the US and Canada where the railroad infrastructure does not at all match the high-speed rail networks found in Europe and Asia. While there's no reason that the US and Canada can't have such infrastructure and no excuse that they don't at present doesn't necessarily make taking the train in these countries bad. Riding a train, whether fast or slow, is the greenest and most environment-friendly way to travel as trains move more people at one time than busses, planes, or cars do and taking the train offers great views of towns and locales you very well might not be able to see from a highway. And, you also can't see a country of get an idea of its landscape if you fly over it on a plane. And, as I am sure you won't be able to dispute, the seat you sat in on Amtrak is far more comfortable than any bus or plane or even car seat you've ever been in.

@@scott5055 There is always a locomotive change at Albany-Albany-Rensselaer because from a mile or so North of Penn station the locomotive's diesel engine is off and power comes from a shoe riding on top of a third rail. I took the Maple Leaf from NYC to Toronto recently. Pro tip is to invest in business class seats instead of coach-as you'll have the choice of single or double seats, will be next to the cafe car if you want to get up and sit/work somewhere else, complimentary drinks (coffee) and are closer to the restroom. It's a beautiful trip as you'll go across the Whirpool Rapids, the Mohawk River, and the Hudson Valley during certain stretches.

Trains in America are economical for hauling freight, not so for carrying passengers. I believe it's the same in Europe. The difference is that there is political support for substantial subsidies to keep passenger rail viable in Europe. Such is not the case in North America, where - especially in the West - large swaths of uninhabited or sparsely inhabited land separate large cities. In fact, Mexico all but abandoned intercity passenger rail many years ago &, AFAIK, never looked back. The U.S. & Canada may eventually follow suit.

@@decline2state There is SOME profit in rail lines in the densely populated parts of the United States. Amtrak actually makes a profit in the Boston-Washington routes. Here in Canada the Montreal-Windsor stuff breaks even, but your right outside the most densely populated areas, rail travel in North America loses substantial amounts of money.

I took that train part way to Syracuse NY in 2000. It is interesting that the crossing at Niagara NY still seems to take forever. In 2000 we could stay on the train, but even then it required customs to go through the train with dogs and query each and every one of us, while freight train after freight train passed us by without seeming to stop. I have gone through friendly borders on a Eurailpass with much less of a hassle.
Do you wonder why it was necessary to change one GE genesis engine for another that looked just like it in Albany?
The route into Penn Station needs a special version of that engine, one that can access the third rail electric supply for the tunnel sections shutting off the diesel engine there.

I've taken that train too. How many people actually board the train after it either leaves Toronto or New York?
Wouldn't it be easier to have pre-boarding clearance like airports or at least have customs agents board the train either at St. Catharines (for New York-bound trains) or Buffalo (for Toronto-bound trains) and do a "walk-through"?
I'm betting that the whole thing could be done with no delay at the border.
