Looking for a tool if any that will work with a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid. I have tried several but none seem to be able to read / clear codes or recognize the VIN etc. Its like Ford has locked out the consumer from the computer. I know OBD port is good and the tools work on other cars

I have a BOSCH 1350 scan tool. It looks extremely similar to that OTC 3211. The only difference in appearance is the color and name. I've also seen that scanner under several brands and different colors. The 1350 I have is for OBD2 only and the cord can not be disconnected from the scan tool. The 1350 does show OBD2, ABS and SRS codes with the ability to clear those codes. It also displays live data for OBD2, SRS and ANS. It was real useful when I had the ABS light on on my car. I had a bad R.R. WSS which I replaced. It saved me $150+ in diagnosis, labor and parts mark up. It's a good tool for the DIYer.

I as well have been doing repair on vehicles for 40 years. This brought back to mind why I was never so glad these old vehicles left the road. If that truck did not have electronic transmission it would have left you with nothing but code gathering. Prehistoric at best.

Wow. Your timing couldn't have been any better. I was just looking at buying a OTC 3211 just for my OBD-I work. Seems that I lost a bunch of OBDI capabilities on my Genisys when I upgraded the software on it the last time. I work on a surprising amount of OBD-I vehicles and it would be nice to have a 'modern' scan tool dedicated for these vehicles.
Watching the 3211 do the KOER tests and hearing it beep as the codes came in just brought me back down memory lane. So much nicer doing this with a scan tool and not an analog multimeter or test light.

I just brought the OBC 1 & 11 code reader and scanner model 3211 for my 94 Z28 Camaro. It's very limited, it does not support ABS or Air bags on GM OBD1 vehicles which is why I purchased it. It will give you streaming data when the engine is running. It's one step up for $225.00 then a paper clip for reading and clearing trouble codes.

Good video. I didn't even know the Encore would work on OBD1. They don't give the adapter cables away. Which is why I kept a couple OTC Monitor 4000s around. Thanks!

+Mid-Thumb Automotive it may of even worked better if the engine was fully warmed up with no trans range issues.

I have the Bosch version of the small scan tool. (Bosch owns OTC and Actron) Haven't had the chance to use it on OBD1, but it works great for OBD2, reads generic and manufacturer, as well as ABS and airbag.

I bought an OTC 3211 back in Feb 2018 and as soon as I got it tried to update it, none were available, I called their tech support and was told they updated every 3 or 4 months, so I waited and waited.. to this day not one update. OTC and Bosch and Actron are owned by SPX and they all seem to use the same software and firmware for those common tools. I don't mind that but when you sell a tool originally made in 2016 / 2017 and never update it and keep selling it, that is fraud.

I was wondering why Eric O didn't suggest the New OTC Evolve, it has a lot of features, all wiring diagrams that are on their server, repair information of common problems, links to Google, Identifix, 2 wireless systems, comes with a J-2534 Programmer that you can program with at around $4000. I have a Verus Wireless which will no longer be supported after this last update, so that is why I am looking at that tool, it doesn't have scope, but I can use my Verus or Vantage for that.

THANK YOU! Very much for this video. I didn't know they made a more modern tool for the older OBD-I/EEC-IV vehicles.
It sure beats the Paper Clip/Engine Light count method. The best I've been able to get on my '92 Bronco was to use the Innova 3145 to get the codes read easier.
Any Chance you could talk about using the old Break Out Boxes for these Pre-OBD-II vehicles?

Joel 1 It checks for bad wiring and loose connections. If the tone sounds, check codes. Twist wiring and see if the tone goes off. If you don't hear a tone, everything is o.k.
