Fantastic video! As someone who's been working hard to make videos to show people how well One Piece uses the medium of manga, I love how well you showed one of Oda's most important strengths.
While obviously One Piece's art isn't perfect, I would argue that Oda is still top-tier in some technical aspects. His command of perspective is really strong, and is why so many of those huge shots of landscapes and big moments feel impactful. And his creative imagery works because it always comes hand in hand with great composition.

The way he uses perspective is the reason why a lot of the iconic shots and panels of One Piece came to life
And on the technical stuff, I'd argue that overall Oda is still better than the Big 3 because of how great the landscape are in One Piece + his shading is also underrated

    This was lovely, well written.
Oda's technical ability, I think that depends on how one defines "technical."
I'm a photographer. I play with light and shadow, capturing the translucence of a flower petal or the sparkle of the sun on the water. I capture moments - a newlywed couple waiting for the primary photographer to finish posing them, stealing a quick kiss or a child's sheer joy while running through a fountain. These are composed to evoke a particular feeling, nostalgia or longing or peace or calm.
I do that with a camera because I can't do what Oda does. I can't take pen to paper and create those images, I can only find them and commit them to film or an SD card.
When it comes to composition, to framing, to staging, Oda's technique is superior. That, IMO, is more important than being technically accurate.

  • @RMATFL
    @RMATFL 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Osa has such a unique sense to craft the key frame in manga. Either the kickass finisher by the monstrous trio in their combats, or the emotional height of the story. Like when Sanji knees to Zeff before leaving Baratie, or Robin cries “I want to live”. Those compositions are just so powerful, they etched into my brain and I couldn’t possibly forget them after a decade.

The thing is I’ve read a lot of mangas and some have some images that I love and even remember deeply. But that may happen once or twice per manga, (except for berserk and maybe claymore). But on One Piece, I can remember specific scenes from almost every arc… some of them give me goosebumps just from
remembering them. Not to mention Oda's otherworldly capacity to portray emotion like none other.

One Piece was the first Anime I watched and I got hooked immediately, so I didn’t have any comparisons back then, but I could proudly say that I knew so many one piece characters early on.
Now, a decade later I still enjoy watching anime but in so many animes I can’t distinguish the characters, which makes the watching experience worse a lot. I noticed how hard it is to come up with new faces for each character, so many shows suffer from the same face syndrome.
I couldn’t tell you a distinct facial feature from any of these anime’s and would challenge you to do so: Assassination classroom, classroom of the elites, or fairy tale. The list goes on

Imo oda used to be more technically gifted than the majority of the artists that people hold up as better than him (muira ect ). He just purposely depicts his characters and world in a cartoonish style. If you are an artist you can easily see he has a firm grasp on the fundamentals and that's why he's able to warp them so much and still create a successful image. Oda is good with negative space, grand images, character design, extreme perspective shots and kinetic action. Hyperrealism to me doesn't really show how great an artist is. Oda is similar to Toriyama in that way

It irks me more than anything when people say they can't take One Piece's artstyle seriously.

The most underrated aspect of Oda’s art in my opinion is the comedy. I’ve read plenty of comedy manga and nothing makes me laugh out loud quite like some of the jokes and physical comedy in One Piece

Great video. I bet we're going to see giant luffy silhouetted on the moon someday. Actually on the moon for the entire world to see.

Coloured spreads are the place where Oda truly flex, he also adds much more technically insane features in them. The sheer amount of different vibes is astonishing
