I wanted to do this webtoon backgrounds tutorial since I had my fair share of struggling when I first started drawing my webtoon, Entwined.
It took me some time to learn how to edit models properly while getting a nice anime-ish look out of them. So I wanted to share what I learned to help fellow comic artists. 😊 (this also helps in illustrations, I'd love to try these methods in future illustrations!)
I'm still in the learning process so this tutorial doesn't cover everything ofc. If you have other tips on easy background making please feel free to share!

Hi cutie! Thanks for this video, but I should tell you about a little problem with sketchup free: if you're selling or earning from the webcomic, you can't trace or use anything on sketchup if you don't have a commercial license for the program.
It's still a very big gray zone unfortunately, I also wanted to use models from sketchup too, mainly because I'm doing a fancomic so I don't earn anything, but some problem can arise like if you have a Patreon with various rewards plus a "early chapters of comic", even if the Patreon is not entirely dedicated to your comic and chapters are just one of the rewards you offer, it's still seen as using the comic for some earning and forbidden from agreement on sketchup...
(It's such a shame ywy)
They can’t prove that you’re using the free or paid version. Just like photoshop can’t prove that you’re drawing your webtoon a on a pirated license. Unless you’re making a good salary on your drawings alone I don’t see why people should rush to buy it.
@@Pluvias you could use blender and have more options or import the models into it from sketchup ;)
hey could you elaborate a bit cause i didnt quite understand. if i buy the sketchup model on acon cant i use it for commercial use ? like if i open the model through another program is it still illegal ?
@@assholic666 is the only issue using the sketchup app to open the 3d file or is the use of the sketchup model already illegal? like if i buy the sketchup model on acon and open it on blender through an extention can i still not use it for commercial use ?

Number one tip to be able to do anything background wise.
- Learn Perspective.
(Even if u know all this tech she uses, if your perspective fundamentals are bad, it will not help you make ur comics any better).
but even if you know perspective, if you dont have these materials, you cant do anything.
@@emperor8716 Thats the thing, you don't need these tools if you know perspective. And if u do have them, you can utilise them even better.
late response but I agree. however not having to constantly redraw backgrounds and effortlessly keep consistency with space with a comic series is powerful and more efficient.
My backgrounds just come out looking like kid drawings but I understand perspective

You're amazing!! I've tried to make webtoons multiple times, and I've failed even after completing 2 different story scripts. (was never able to complete the drawing. I overworked so bad on my first webtoon when I was 16. Horrible mistake.) I never thought until recently that using models and background models would be extremely helpful. Thanks so much!

Amazing... So much work to do for some panels and not being recognized enough is frustrating. People need to be patient with artists works.
True, so much work needed to produce this. But at the same time I'm thankful we have these resources so we can work individually in a pace that's not too slow 🥲

If you go for black & white style you'll find dozens and dozens of assets! (It's a bit harder to find colored ones for webtoons xD)

ive just been wasting my life like a peasant lol i had no idea about Acon. I've just been trying my best o.o no wonder all the big comics look so pretty and similiar designs
I loved the video. The tips and method you share will be very useful to many people, myself included. Backgrouds are a subject that often breaks my head and seeing the processes of others helps a lot to find the best method for me. I tried the vitrite and I liked it, but it gave me a bug in windows 10 and did not return the windows to their normal opacity. anyway I could solve it, and I am looking for another similar application. Thank you personally for your advice, I subscribe and I will be attentive to your drawing processes.

Personally, I would try to be sketch-up file to blunder and export that to Clip Studio. The reason why is due to the shading. Why I use model or initiated to get the line art I find when it comes to coloring you’re better off turning off the lights and shading it in manually. This helps blend your hand-drawn characters better with the CG backgrounds.

Thank you for this video! I was looking for a video on how to use 3D and other assets to speed up the creation of Webtoon backgrounds. But aren’t there any alternatives to Sketchup that don’t require a subscription? I want the option to use my comic commercially and I don’t think the free version of Sketchup will allow that.
Thank you for this video. I really hope to see more videos on how to make comic background creation quicker and easier. Backgrounds are the part that I want to get over with as quickly as possible so I can have more time to spend on the fun parts of comic creation 😊

So I was informed of this free interior design software called pcon that can open skp files!

I haven't tried using it yet but I tested it to open a file and it worked! The only thing tho is that the sky from the city model in the video didn't load. I'd love to look more into it soon, but I hope this helps!

soon manual drawing will be a thing of the past and everything will just be 3d models upon 3d models put into 2d. like a character creator in a mmo, you would design your characters by going through all the adjustments of body sizes and part positioning, and a library of thousands of hairs/eyes etc, then you could just pose them import and adjust colors to fit whatever background.
Backgrounds maybe but not characters. I hate the anime that try to do this, like RWBY. It looks wrong.

I have the Android version of Sketchup, but is it okay if I take screenshots (don't worry, I only take free models) and I edit my drawings on Ibis paint? And is it legal if it's for a commercial purpose? For example a self-published manga?

I used to draw it manually, but eventually I ended up running into a lot of problems
Like... not have a three-dimensional imagination, that causes all the images to be frontal or in profile
or not knowing how to measure objects in a 3d space, causing them to never have a fixed size
There are professionals who handle themselves well doing it manually, but they are just that ... professionals
for long style comics like webtoons how do you set up csp like you have? i see you have sections of canvas like pages. is this a feature of the comic version?
It's a feature in EX version, when creating files I choose the "webtoon" option and choose to have multiple pages ^^
Does anyone know if one can use legally the free 3D designs from Warehouse to the backgrounds? If I use those designs would that be plagiarism even if give credit to the designer?
what laptop do you use for sketch up? because my laptop won't load large files on sketch up.

Unfortunately you can't import .skp files into CSP, but you can use Acon3D's new software Abler to open .skp, it's free abler.carpenstreet.com/

Usually I just close the software I used it on (in this example, Sketchup). When I open it again it's back to normal
Is there still another way to download the Sketch Up Make? The download list doesn't show me the old ones. Just up to 2020 Sketch up Pro :(

Try using Pcon Planner, it can open skp files too pcon-planner.com/en/

I use EX but everything works similarly on Pro, except for line extraction from 3D model

Of course you can, except for the 3D part, not sure photoshop supports 3D model usage
The biggest issue with this, is it makes a lot of WEBTOON a feel the same . It’s important to learn these tools yourself before you publish anything. Building a world is just as important as character designing.
What sets you apart from everyone else? Shortcuts help with production, yes. But it’s better to use these assets as a reference on top of rulers and real life locations from like google maps , to really achieve uniqueness.
World building really depends on the genre of the comic itself. If it's a slice-of-life or a school story, it won't really matter where the events take place. But fantasy and action stories might need more of those "special" environments
Yeah, I've noticed that a lot with medieval/european/rococo decoration or floral designs, as well as architecture and settings. I've seen isekai/fantasy/novel webtoons used them so much, I actually get surprised when they are not used anymore. If the srt of the characters is not unique or has a quirck of some kind, I'll literally just mix it up with another 10 generic stories with all the same backgrounds and similar-looking characters. It's pretty frustrating sometimes.

But as someone who is a creative/would love to make a webtoon...I completely understand. World building isn't easy. That's why people use these tools to help.
Some artists just don't enjoy doing BGs (plus most webtoon etc creators start off buy releasing their work for free.)
And if the reply is "then only post work when you have the skills/are completely ready"....then we wouldn't have anything. That's probably one of the worst pieces of advice to give an artist.

@@Pluvias I respectfully disagree, worldbuilding is the foundation of any story no matter what. Especially if you want to be unique, which everyone should.
Quick tips like these are great when you have artistic experience and know what you're doing. Like any tool they help you speed up your process, but when you're still at a low level, these tricks wind up hurting you more than helping in the long run because of the reliance on software to do the work for you. Like when digital artists rely more on blending layer modes instead of learning color theory.
This is why we teach digital artists how to draw on paper in academia before we jump into digital.
Hobbyists who don't relally care about growth, can do whatever they want, no harm no foul. But anyone who wants to take art seriously should not rely on program specific, gimmicky tricks to solve problems for them.

I am sorry but i am sketchup user basicly bcs i major in architecture. As far as i know that we can't use "non-original" product to earn some money bcs there is no license from what i saw on your tutorial, :"(
The city backgrounds are $209?!?!
It consists of 4 blocks, they can be purchased separately for less than that. They also have less expensive models on their site but this was the one I was given in exchange for this video ^^
