    I've seen too many anime paintings with these hyper realistic back/foregrounds and I always found myself feeling inadequate about my own attempts at hand drawing them. It was always like "Wow that person's SO much better than me, I'd get passed on by literally everybody if I were next to them". But I gotta remind myself that it's totally ok to use this method, and even encouraged in some sectors of concept art. Film and game artists use this technique all the time to composite their concept art.

      Everybody seem to forgot that Makoto Shinkai used irl locations for his movies maybe because doing it is cheap, faster, and adds realism to the overall feels of the movie. If you watched "Your Name" you know what I'm saying.
      Another example that comes to mind is Haikyuu. The studio that animated it also used irl location as a reference.

      Familiar feeling. Then I stumbled across a nature photographers stunning piece of a misty road across fields, saw in my head my character in it and bought the picture. The photographer was exited to see the result and I have been struggling to find how to change a photo into painting. This tutorial came perfectly before I just give up.

      @@awman698 Bullshit everyone should get their worldview shaken from time to time, if you can't take it then you're not cut for people to look at your work and critique it yet. Though shit if that statement offends you but it's true, and as an artist, I find that statement relaxing. I don't have to enslave myself thinking about the most unique original piece ever created, I can just create whatever comes to mind and it will be fine, it will amount to the same because I worked hard on it. And hell maybe the familiarity might attract people to it too.
      Right now we got so many artists the market is utterly saturated so even if you manage to create something completely "original" it might mean nothing if you're the only one seeing it, so the trick is to not overwork yourself trying to create the next Mona Lisa... But you might take inspiration from past artists that you like and do you own thing, your own personal take on the very unique concept of a 3/4 angle portrait.
      Wow. How original...

    A recommendation for the image in background… usually enabling HDR in camera app makes the image look lot better when there are under or overexposed areas
    (Or using exposure {}bracketing if more advanced but requires an camera app for phone because usually built-in doesn't have it.)

    • @AlexHuneycutt
      @AlexHuneycutt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a bit of a false notion, especially with art. Lighting plays a a huge roll in composition, and as such we should control it to make use of it for the end result. By using HDR, you’re deciding not to commit to an exposure structure. The posture shifts because that’s how light works in sensors - too much light means you have to compensate and shift your values down across the board in orrr to see it. It’s beneficial to have proper exposure, and an often-taught fundamental for painters - put your details in the light, or in the shadow, but not in both. Because this is representative of how our eyes actually work, rather than digital high dynamic range.
      HDR has a specific look, and it’s good in its use case - environmental photography. But for artists, where we’re typically aiming to set a mood or emphasize a focal point, often with lighting? I
      ot recommended

    • @nikolaskuklis5925
      @nikolaskuklis5925 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AlexHuneycutt HDR is good to preserve texture and details and it usually makes the light look more like what human eye actually see.
      what the hell are you talking about?

    • @nikolaskuklis5925
      @nikolaskuklis5925 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlexHuneycutt I hope you didn't take it badly from me, If so I am sorry
      But my personal experience with the 3 phones that I had more often than not was that shadows were underexposed and sky/clouds/etc were overexposed amd the photo felt desaturated whilst HDR or the photoediting+expo{} preserved the colour saturation and showed better "real look" and feel of it.

    I really don't see why some put a problem using this type of technique, not all artists are going to master the art 100%, and any help is good, in addition to having this type of help, with time little by little you will learn from this , as well as artists using models to make bases and play with perspectives, it's more like putting on training wheels and then being able to ride a bike without them.
    Not knowing everything is okay, and needing help is even better.
    Great video, I really liked the drawing, it's very cute.

    People who gets salty over using techniques to create art.. just remember that as consumers, we just like or purchase any art that “wow” us. We don’t care how you made it, as long as it catches our eyes. Refining your art style takes many years to achieve even if you “cheat”. I am a cgi artist and I use ANY technology or method I can find in the market to render or generate my art.

    An artist's trait is that he/she should be humble enough to use these techniques. Everything is literally an inspiration from our eyes so you do not just base your pure skill/talent from imagination only, it has to work both so you can create your vision to reality and execute it well. just slapping a reference and tracing it is for practice, but applying own techniques to references will bring great artworks. Just like pokemons are inspired from real life creatures, or how vincent van gogh has his sunflowers yet applies his own technique/flair

    Beautiful! You're spot-on with showing how the character can be drawn to look in place by receiving the same lighting as the rest of the scene.
    The only thing I would add is that, your character - Miss Elf, is reflecting a ton of light. See how the tablecloth is pretty much the same color as her shirt, and it under-lights the wall behind it?
    Having areas of soft light on the wall near her arm and hair would further sell their presence in the composition.
    Having her give light back to the environment is the only way I can think of to improve this; you've even taken the shadows into account with her chair's armrest! I love it so much! 😁

    FELLOW ARTISTS! If you're a fan of the more scenic and emotional anime movies, chances are your favorite movie uses this technique or something very similar as well - there are some videos on this that escape me at the moment, but I recall someone going to the exact spot reference photos were taken for specific movies. It all comes down to what feels right for you, and if you feel like this takes away from the joy of creating for you, then by all means learning to render a background on your own is a valuable experience that allows you to tap into more creativity - but is not, this is powerful and definitely isn't cheating!
    Don't worry about what people would do in the older days - the benefits of constantly evolving tech are at our fingertips, and again it comes down to preference. Heck, I'm sure some of them would kill to be able to speed up their process in the ways we can.
    Oh, and P.S. - Marco Bucci is a very valuable resource for learning lighting, as she mentioned! He's helped me understand it much better than most other tutorials ever did! Do check him out, he's younger, friendlier, well versed in his programs, familiar with more realistic and more toony stuff, straight to the point, and… funny!

    I dont know about using photo for background art
    On its own of course it looks great but I feel taking it as a reference will always end up looking more in line with the art itself that you want to portray
    The girl at the end for instance, you can tell she isnt part of the background. The two styles clash.
    There are very hard and defined lines on her entire art while the background is smooth as butter.
    Nothing bad of course, there is nothing wrong with doing it this way, it just doesnt look as good as if it were a whole piece if you catch my drift

    We got a Harry Potter debate here.
    Artists back in the day using canvases and painting would've been up to date in their latest technology, if technology advances so can art, Digital Art is no less than traditional, a traditional painter can blend their colors into a gradient, or they can use a airbrush no one would say they are cheating, if I'm a photographer and i like to take pictures of landscapes and then draw on top of them, there's no shortcut here, "oh but you are not drawing the background" yes and when you are painting you aren't also creating the canvas you just buy one.

    • @shototodoroki2034

      You have to start with the trees to make the canvas itself before you can actually be called an artist. Otherwise, you are just a wannabe

    Theres a 3d model tool on csp you can use instead of taking photos of yourself in poses, its fully adjustable though it takes a bit of practice to figure out, you can change light direction etc as well to make more accurate shadows

    People forget that art isn’t always just one way. It’s ridiculous especially when people who don’t even do art would say something like this is “cheating”. What about art makes it art?

    I was thinking exactly of this process, not alot is talked about photobashing characters let alone anime styles. But using a background is interesting. I have been using 3D characters to "sketch" the scene, and then paint and lines on top.
    Funny enough, it takes longer to compose a piece this way than just drawing.
    And no it isn't cheating, if you think it is then you are very, very, very childish.
