    Great interview in Toishan dialect, which used to be the dominant dialect spoken in Chinatown.

    This is actually a blend of toisanese and "cantoisanese." Many of the expressions and words used are distinctly Canto but said in a Toisan accent.

    You can't find a job in Chinatown if you can't speak Toisan at the old time. I learned it when I came to US.

  • @AuthorSamLui
    @AuthorSamLui ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I used to be able to speak Toisan a bit, this is due to my mom being from Toisan. Brings back memories, being with my grandparents. No longer really able to speak it and understand bit of it. I remember how my dad and kung fu sifu said that if you weren't Toisan looking for a kitchen job in LA, you likely won't be hired. Wondering did that apply, back in NY chinatown back in the days.

    • @chinatowngangstories
      @chinatowngangstories  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely. NYC’s Chinatown was originally run by the Toishanese.

      Not many people know this dialect unless you from toishan or ABC from the 60-70’s.

    • @DanteAtropos
      @DanteAtropos ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s just accented 白话. If you grew up around the gambling dens in Chinatown from 70s -2010s you would be familiar with it. It’s. Sounds like a Mix of Hong Kong Cantonese and Toishan and some American English terms.

  • @HnKP7M10
    @HnKP7M10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Carry mother over river! 😝. This dialect you very rarely hear anymore. They don’t even have translators for toishan. Lucky I understand toishan but can’t really speak it. Only the bad words and easy stuff. Say Ki I! Kok knee gaw how! 😝
