Did it on monday night. Easiest head unit change I've ever done. The mounting kit didnt like my radio, though. Some rotary tool modifications cleared that right up.
Question - why not connect the steering wheel controls?
Very kewl vid... Garage... installation, cut out a heat/AC window unit...install or a portable stand-up AC tower w drain hose...
I'm glad you made this video. I'm planning on changing my head unit out in the next couple of weeks!
Ayyy Lmao nice, good luck! It's not too hard!
Don't you just love these how to videos that conveniently skip the useful bit, like removing the dashboard (skip to 3:08). And then demonstrate how to do all the bits a child could manage.
Thanks for watching and contributing to my ad revenue for the month. Never thought being a dick could pay!
Well tbh, the dashboard is very easy to take out. If you can't figure out the dashboard, you shouldn't be fucking with it in the first place. Notice how the video isn't titled, "How to Install an Aftermarket Head Unit in a Mazda"? This is more of a vlog and showing what he's doing. If you wanted a guide you could easily find one. Why waste everyone's time putting a comment?
Great video! But does the head unit not support a steering wheel control adapter like the Axxess ASWC-1? I figured a fancy HU like that one would. I installed a single DIN Sony MEX-XB100BT and was able to retain the steering wheel controls with the ASWC-1. If it was a wired remote jack on the back then it should.
It definitely does, but being my first time I didnt really think about adding it. I'm going to go back and see if I can which should be a simple fix.
It supports the SWC. Check out crutchfield for options (i believe there are 2 different manufacturers that work with our cars). Easy to install and not that expensive either.
Awesome. It looks great, I love the way the double DIN screen looks at home in the dash. Some day I will replace my single DIN with a double, they just look so clean.
Great video, I also have a 2011 MX-5 with a prht thats all stock But I would like to replace the head unit someday pioneer looks like they make great units, what was the model number of your head unit ?
You don't need an Axxess to work with OEM Miata SWC, since they are resistance ones, just connect 2 wires in OEM socket, pins 1N & 1P.
Where did you get the dash kit? Part number? Thanks.
I know this is an old video, but how well does the screen show up when the top is down and the sun is bright in the sky? And does it dim the display enough at night so it’s not blinding?
Don't remember it being an issue
A hacksaw blade makes quick work of removing the middle piece of the trim plate.
Cool video. My wife has trouble reversing the NC, she keeps bumping into animals, children, other cars etc. so looking for a double din which comes with a camera, can anyone help suggest a good unit please?
this is going to sound like a dumb question but if you wire up the bose system to the standard radio harness what happens? does it not output audio or does it damage something? bought mine used with a radio already installed but no sound from the 8inch speakers and am hoping it was not wired directly to the radio or even worse that it was wired and they blew something up
from wich build year is your car cause i have one from 2006 and i want to put a new head unit in to but i dont know if this works on my car.
Jimmy's car is SIC, I have a white 2006 NC Sport. An chance he has any vids/info on the mods he did to his car?
Someone else actually owns it now
Links to purchase the radio and assembly?
Very helpful video. I think that those of us who intend to do a head unit swap would appreciate the (a) brand name of the replacement trim plate, and (b) the model of the Pioneer unit that you installed. I understand that there are kits available to hook up the steering wheel controls.
I know this was 2 years ago but I second this
IMO, Pioneer is crap!
I got the same kit in the UK with Bose and you can get steering wheel adapters. I fit a Kenwood 7017dabs GPS antenna dab digital antenna sterring wheel controls and interface to use the existing Bose amp and speaker. I'm pretty sure the steering wheel controls were by the same brand.
Only problem with fitting was the mass of wires to tuck behind and how.to route the USB to the centre console.
Yeah I'm still meaning to get steering controls. Havent needed it bad enough yet I guess!
@@ColoredinLight I use them all the time with mine, useful for Android auto. if you don't really use them that understandable as To have to take it all apart again just to fit it would be a pain haha
I managed to tuck all the wires up in the sides, like the gap next to the glove box. I gently pushed/pulled them from either side while feeding the headunit in
what guide did you follow for completing the wiring to maintain the bose amp and speakers?

Great video my man! 1 of the few who makes videos on NC Miatas. Keep it up!
Great video - thank you. You've given me the confidence to do the same to my girlfriend's NC sometime.
Will the wiring harness still work if mine is equipped with the Bose audio system ?
Grate video! What brand and model did you chose for you mazda nc? Wich is the test of tour mazda? Thank you very much, max from italy
I have a boose radio but wiring connection is different I mean plug fits but no speaker
I can't find much information in google
Any suggestions?
When I put in my new head unit, I found that I could no longer use the 2 10mm bolts that were tricky to get to. My head unit and bracket just didnt have a place for them to thread into. The result is that my head unit and AC control assembly slowly starts to pop outwards and isn't flush with the dash. I can push it back in but it 5 minutes later its no longer flush again. Has this been your experience?
How did you connect the microphone for making phone calls and using commands?
Plugs into the back of the radio
What is the model number of the pioneer unit ?
i just bought a 2010. Where to get that digital kit?
Lots of places. Amazon. eBay. Crutchfield. Best buy. Etc.
@@ColoredinLight could you be more prise?
Nice video. I’m planning an almost identical install, but I’m curious how you mounted the microphone for hands free calling. I’d like to mount it in the same location but I’m not sure how best to do it.
Have any suggestions or sources?
I did a small square of double sided foam tape and just tucked the wires behind the steering wheel shell and plastic panel when your knees are. Then ran the wire to behind the dash. Pretty easy!
Could you show how to remove the middle console? I need to get to the gear lever and I don’t know how it’s done.
buggolein check my 5x racing bushing install video!
Hello , may i ask you ? I do replace mine with a JVC 235DBT, had also order the complement connexion but i cant get any sound, do you know what it can be? sorry for my english, Greatting de france!
Hey kara, I'm not too positive on that. Maybe a connection loose somewhere? I'm not super well versed on audio equipment but just needed a new radio
Oh! ok merci for the answer i will try to find out :)
Hi! Just a question, once the head unit is installed, the steering wheel controls continue to work ?? Thanks in advance! 👍
Ps. Greetings from Italy 😁
You need the control wires
Colored in Light, thank you for the info 👍
I tried that on my nc. Bose system but wanted something els. no way we could get it working. back to the original. dang.
Thank you for your Miata series, I have an NC2 and you've been super helpful. You should get a mini hacksaw though, it was kinda painful watching you cut the plastic with a knife lol
I don’t believe you are opening the box on the rear deck - paint scratches?
Lol I love how I still get these comments
Hi there. I just recently found your channel and what a great collection of videos you have! I’m watching and catching up to get current. I have a ‘13 Club and would love to know where I can find a radio like yours. I looked up Frys and sadly they are closed down. I look forward to more videos. Very great content!!
You don't want this radio. It's old
Now that is badass, I'm definitely gonna have to do this.
please share me all materials required and from where can I buy it? >>>> thanks a lot
That trim kit looks nicer than mine, is there a model number for it, or even better a link?
thesinzia its crutchfields dash kit. Crutchfield.com
You'll need to be sure to pick your year model as the nc2 and nc1 differ depending on your model!
thanks! just what i was looking for
What pioneer are this ? What this name ?Thank you
Looks great.
why would you possibly skip showing the removal of the original unit?
Theres a previous video where I removed the radio.
How about a soft cloth to do your work on so you're not scratching the shit out of the face of your bezel???
Lol
Great video, I am going to fit one in my MX5 next week, So good to see how it fits and will look👍
I looked into this and was told that I need speakers too because I have a Bose system and the speakers are a odd impedance ?
JAYJAYJAY53 hmm I'm not sure. I havent experienced any issues although I would like new speakers. I'm not an audiophile!
Colored in Light nor am l . NPR and audio books are my main listening formats so I ended up keeping my stock Bose system although I added a jack to run my books through my stereo using an aux plug
Great vid. Im a new follower, just asking a couple of things.
1- Whats the model of the Pioneer Head Unit
2- Where did u buy the "faceplate" thingy where you put up the pioneer?
I'm not positive on the model, it's some long number and letter combination. You can find dash kits through Crutchfield.
@@ColoredinLight I think it is the DMH-1500NEX, currently $295 on crutchfield
that box is going to scratch that paint work
I cringed when he spun the box! I’d have to be hitting that with a buffer on my Black NC
😆
Hey man, i wanted to know whats the model of your new radio :)
Thanks !
What is the harness parts number?

Scarating the shit out of your car! You’re killin me
Wat
Tune update ?
You had the screws, and the instructions, you just left them in the bag (that you savagely ripped open) at 3:34
I'm glad you noticed that part!
I was watching in the hopes of seeing you take out the original head unit 😫😫 was it very intuitive ?
I have a previous video of removing the dash trim that shows more radio removal. It's fairly simple, remove surrounding plastics then screws on front and then a weird bolt on the side you have to access through the driver footwell
@@ColoredinLight can you share the link to that video please? thanks
How about an example of how your stereo sounds with the new head unit and speakers?
Right now only the head unit is different so maybe in the future if I decide to get speakers.
I Got No Sound From The New Stereo
Great content my friend!
Much appreciated
I bought a micro bypass for my stereo to avoid cutting reverse wire on my miata...by doing that you can operate all functions of the stereo without engaging the hand brake. my stereo is like yours, I wasn't able to change the screen back ground, dvd wouldn't work ect. bypass is easy to install. ebay $5 bucks.
great
never use electrical tape in these installations, solder and heat shrink is best.
Great vid but I came here to see how to remove the dash, sad to see you just skipped it entirely.
Yeah I made sure to title it correctly for the actual radio install. Check out the dash install video for removal.
1:30 OMG your paint!! Stahp!! 😖
Should I go take a photo to show you that its fine?
Too many notes Mr. Mozart. 'and now I'm going to open box' ?????
That is what I said in the video isn't it, thanks for the comment.
@@ColoredinLight I meant you say too much that isn't necessary.
Oh I understood your comment
You slide around the box on the painted surfaces?😡
I'm sorry, what?
That video is about as useful as a hip pocket in a singlet. Not 1 piece of useful information just a video to stroke your own ego.
😁
Great video. However Im always at a loss when I watch em. why open the box on the beautiful car. why not put a duct sheet blanket? I was just waiting for you to drop that unit on your boot lid. Why not dismantle the old unit on a dust sheet or old towel? you reduce the chance of resale by putting the old unit on the floor. Makes no sense maybe i'm just a bit OCD? Maybe you should take the time to clean down the workshop and use that fantastic bench you got there and not use the floor. Glad you still have your fingers and the cover intact after that monumental knife work! Wear gloves.
I think you are a bit OCD. It's just a radio. The car isnt scratched. My fingers are still here. Thanks for the comment.
@@ColoredinLight you could be right! Stay safe.
Neil
Diamond?
Surely you shouldn't need a reversing camera on a Miata...
