We have the exact same NC, and I do my oil changes so differently! Crazy how a simple job can be done so many different ways. THANKS FOR MAKING IT 2X SPEED. It makes it easy to watch and absorb information. GREAT CONTENT!!
I too own an NC. (2011) I have done a few minor changes, mods, upgrades ...what ever ya want to call them..... Here is one as I did from once reading this.... " If you own a NC and do only one mod, do this one... Get rid of the plastic coolant expansion tank as the NC is the only one that the expansion tank is pressurized along with the coolant system. The plastic breaks down in time from heat, etc. and can crack open! Buy the aluminum one please. It's a rather easy install and peace of mind! ZOOM-ZOOM!
Hey man I got my NC 3 years ago and I've been following you since. I will be doing some mods following your videos soon. Its great to see some simple maintenance videos. Please do more of these, appreciate it a lot! Keep it up!
I noticed that you jacked the car from the middle, I thought the NCs were not to be jacked up like this. Also I pour oil into the filter before putting it back on, just something I do. Thanks for the video I will be using the plastic bag trick.
One thing you might not know, If you hold the throttle to the floor while cranking the engine it will turn over without starting which is a good way to get the oil worked around your engine on an oil change before you start it. Other than that I would say this was perfect for a DIY mechanic to follow!
thanks for the video! Very helpful, easy to follow, no unnecessary stuff. I usually also fill up the new filter with new oil so the engine has immediate access to fresh oil at first startup.
Good timing as I'm about to do my first service (65k km). Almost all bases covered but I'll need to keep looking to be sure where the jacking points are - i know you've covered that somewhere.
I have recently purchased a 2010 MX-5, GT PRHT, and have been up grading to all LED light bulbs (except for Xenon headlights). Always looking through TH-cam for advice, however always ending with your videos, for the most concise, accurate and simple guidance. Having done almost 1K miles of ownership, (and SAM’s having a $10 instant rebate!), I decided to do an oil change. Of course the MX-5 filter is nowhere to be found from above, so needless to say I sought insight from TH-cam. Not realistic that you had downloaded any videos other than lighting inspiration. The first one I found was yours, I know I need look no further. You answered all of the questions I may have had. Thank you for your diligence and insightful videos.
No need to remove the tire. Just remove the small plate under the filter and oil plug. Its just 4 screws. Easier and faster than removing your tire. Also filling the oil filter up a bit before attaching it.
FYI - the oil pressure guage is "fake" - it just takes RPM not actual oil pressure. There is a "real" oil pressure mod with an LCD screen that fits in the original oil pressure slot
Yes, fake in the sense it doesn't give you a real oil pressure number. But real in the sense of an on/off switch for oil pressure. he says make sure your gauge reads oil pressure, which it does. The readings after 'does it have pressure yes/no' you're correct, are a fake calculation based on RPM
Very good video! I just got an NC so I thank you for the info. and I will keep watching your videos. I won't be calling it a Miata it will only be called MX-5. Does anyone know why they dropped the Miata name on the car from 05-15?
They probably wanted to make the car sound more 'legit' or accepted by the uneducated general public. But die-hard Miata enthusiasts would have none if it. The answer is always MIATA.
Thanks for making this. I'm trying to do a coolant flush. But I don't see an opening on the radiator. Do I just pour the flush and then the coolant after the flush is done directly into the plastic reservoir?
4 years too late, but yes. Also, replace the plastic one with an aluminum one if you haven’t already. They’re very prone to cracking and will leave you on the side of the road with a chunk of iron instead of a running engine.
Tried to do mine today, oil filter is stuck on. Broke my brand new chain wrench and it ripped a hole in the filter as well trying to get it off. Some mechanics are a joke.
Not bad but I would note that before you add the oil the car must be on a level service as much as possible. If you raised the front on stands the oil level will be off.
just bought a 2006 nc and the oil is overfilled from previous owner. how bad is that? i ended up driving 8 hours with it before someone telling me it was overfilled.
How did you know it was overfilled? If it is overfilled, you run the risk of the crankshaft sloshing it around and aerating it which wouldn't be great.
@@ColoredinLight me and other people checked multiple times and its touching the wire of the dipstick way past the lines on the tip at the end that show low/full or whatever. also last person looks like they used an impact gun to put on drain plug i cant get it off with all my strength!
Sure, he had: Flyin miata sway bars, fox coilovers, ampliform wheels, stoptech rotors, hawk pads, ss brake lines, autoexe front rear strut tower bars and under body bracing.
It's true. The only oil pressure sensor on the car is an on/off switch. So the oil pressure gauge will only really tell you if the car has any oil pressure at all. I don't know how the switch is calibrated.
Ziploc bag trick - yes! This is a must go to video for new NC owners.
Definitely helps with the clean up

I don't set it to 2x speed. It's not something I control.

Pour oil in the filter, because otherwise oil might not reach it 😂😂😂😂😂
thank you for this!! Ive always wondered how easy it was for my NC!!

Especially if you don't fill your filter before installing it.

The 101-Series is great 👍🏻
Glad you enjoy them!
Thanks a lot for the guide! This really helped yesterday. That damn oil filter was hard to find, let alone get out.

Repair and upgrade my cars for about 15 years, but only now I see lifehack how not shed motor oil to engine bay! Thnx!:)
I’ll definitely be using that ziplock trick.

If you think changing the oil is fun, just wait until it's time to replace a headlamp or front turn signal bulb.
Just bought an NC :) love this
Good choice!
The ziplock bag technique is a great idea thanks!
Love the bag trick removing the oil filter!
you're show is becoming very confessional, Good work.
I just received a 2012 Miata. Thank you
Glad I watched. I'll have to remember the bag around the oil filter, which is a real pain in the ass to get to by the way.
Excellent video!

prefilling oil filter is proven to be completely unnecessary but if it makes you feel good keep doing it.
I was thinking about doing a oil change on my NC2 today. Where did you order the new crush washer?
It's all from oriellys
Thanks, great vid

What jack and jack stands do you use?
Noticed you have a flat blade dipstick, what is the part number for it in the nc?
Came that way, not sure
@@ColoredinLight no worries, thanks for the reply!
Can the oil filter be removed without taking the wheel off? Or was your wheel just off?
Yea you can do it from underneath
I dig the plastic bag, but for the love, use CLEAN oil to lube the filter lol!!
Lol its ok
Really makes no difference - used oil is a lot more convenient and does the same job.

What’s the best crush washer to use? I grabbed a copper one with a rubber inside for reuse, is that not smart?
I always just go with a generic copper
Can you pass along the upgrades to Logan's car, wheels, brakes, coilovers, sway bar.

@@ColoredinLight Thank you.
Could you tell me where is the 2006 mazda mx5 coolant sensor?
Back of the engine
I read that the oil pressure gauge doesn't really measure oil pressure. That true?
It's true. The only oil pressure sensor on the car is an on/off switch. So the oil pressure gauge will only really tell you if the car has any oil pressure at all. I don't know how the switch is calibrated.
Is the crush washer neccesary?
You should always replace the crush washer
Where do you get the crush washer
Whatever parts store you go to
Very dope how to video 🔥🔥
FWIW - I lube the oil filter rubber with CLEAN oil while filling the filter, before install.
