I also built a similar mount for a Old Town Guide, using 2x4 for a Suzuki 2.5 outboard. Lasted 3 trips before the 2x4 ripped in half and I had to catch the motor as it was trying to get away. I now have my mount made out of 3/16" steel angle.
You can re-inforce both sides of contacts with aluminum and use 4 bolts to piece both sides together. It is better to use treated 2x4. It is more sturdy.
I just made my mouth today for my canoe. The longest part was drilling two holes on a 2 1/2 4x1 weld flat. No drilling on the the canoe. It's secured by two superstrut beam clamp. Can easily be adjusted forward, and backward. Had to buy nuts and bolts, otherwise it would've just cost under $15. Can't wait to try it this weekend.
Just finished mine for my canoe and it came out great thanks for sharing ..I used 3/8" 16 wing nuts instead makes it easier to to tighten...my husband is thinking of doing something like this for his kayak but we'll see...
Steering is pretty good as long as you keep the motor close to the boat haul. Actually you can also get your speed up another couple miles an hour by shifting your weight to the front as well as making sure the motor sits level. Hope this helps.
Nice setup. First time I've sen your setup and amazed how close our designs are. I worried about strength and went the more exotic route of using Oak. I have mine setup for electric but really like your gas solution too! Very impressed with the speed.
If you do that in Wisconsin, you have just added the requirement to register the boat with the DNR... any motorized boat (or sail boat longer than 12foot) requires registration (pay a fee and apply the stickers).
I got a same motor. it was given as broken motor. I repaired it and running and it is funny that I was making exactly same thing without knowing this video. It is good japanese motor.
Any steering problems? I'm about to do the same thing with a two man kayak and a 40lb Minn-Kota electric. I plan(ned) on making a mount at the absolute rear, but it looks like you can steer OK doing it your way?
Hey you made a back rest for your seat as well.. niiiiiiiiiice. Maybe develope the design to include a permiment backrest with padding and a erganomic design and sell it :)
I did basically the same thing with my canoe motormount same 2 x 4 setup....THIS WILL NOT LAST!!!! mine worked for about 5 trips until the torque on the 2 x 4 started splitting it. currently looking for a scrap piece of hardwood, DON'T USE PINE!
Ron, you're the best man!
Holy smokes that old 1 HP is as fast as my 4hp Yamaha on a lite 14' boat.
Impressed
That was fully wound out. The tank would hold about 7km of fuel fo that Canoe. Maybe .7 liters.

That motor is cute as hell.

Beats the heck out of paddling! You should have had a pyramid of hot chicks water skiing behind you.

That little motor is awesome. I want one but they don't make 'em like they used to.....

Awesome!! My inherited ice auger is a TAS too! They are made well IMO.
You did a good work!

good project. you just need a cable ,secring the motor to the canoe.
nice mount very simple and very effective
Great video, thanks for sharing the design
Ah ha! A tunar canoe. I love it!!!!!!!
Looks good. Should the motor go a little deeper in the water?

Wow! Great music!
Great idea,

That is funny since this motor was also a freebie that I had to fix. The carb really just needed to be taken apart and cleaned up.
What kind of motor is it
I would like to try this, but I don't think a 2x4 will hold a Suzuki 5hp
you can troll for tuna at 7mph! time for a rod holder on that other side! nice

I reinforced a similar design with plywood...screwed and glued to the 1x4 then of course clamp the motor onto that.
How much does a motor like that go for?
where do you find a 1hp outboard without paying an arm and leg?
I'm going with a mercury 4 horse on my 16 ft canoe can't wait
How did the motor mount work out? I have a 3.5hp mucculloch I want to mount.
Perhaps you were using a larger motor, mine has been going strong with no signs of stress thus far.
many thanks buddy. you just helped me.

You're welcome. Though I did complicate it by having bolts that were too short for the job.
Thanks for posting
why do you call it haul/it is a hull.
correcting the spelling? If someone is kind enough to share, you then feel compelled to correct their spelling.
How about a 650 motorcycle engine and transmission to an 8 inch propeller ? Just get crazy.
Thanks for the sharing
That wasn't my only spelling mistake my friend, I can't believe I didn't notice them until now. (corrections in video-->only~steel)

T your motor is cavitating, that's why it's so loud.
Am I the only one that doesn't hear any sound on this video...??
nope
Thanks ... Good idea.
Water skiing any one?
super merci beaucoup
Canoeing...you're doing it wrong. :) Nice project tho.
Hahaha 2\4 technology
The outboard looks more like 50 y.o.
Absolutely pathetic.
