  • Delving into the Strava Workout Density data for Nairobi, we unearthed notable distinctions in workout activity between the Kenya Police and the Kenyan Military. The most plausible explanation for this contrast appears to be linked to income, as Strava users generally fall within the middle-class bracket. Explore the intriguing dynamics behind these disparities in fitness engagement! 🏋️‍♂️💼 #NairobiFitness #StravaAnalysis #KenyaPolice #KenyanMilitary #WorkoutDisparities

    Very interesting way to intepret data. This is honestly very impressive. Also based on only eye test most police bar fresh graduates aren't exactly that fit looking to be honest😅. Especially traffic police who are fat yet they are literally on their feet directing traffic for hours every day

      Thank you. I think the military tend to have exercise drills often while the police have non after passing out at the training school.

    I like your analysis however I believe you have overlooked some important aspects and observations that would lead to wrong or rather loosely coupled conclusions.
    1. Data sources: When you look at an average Army/Police/AP/GSU officer they tend to prefer digital all terrain hardend if not Mechanical dial watches, you will find very few using smartwatches.
    2. You will find more activities outside the barracks than inside as most civilians will run just outside the barracks either morning or evening(You can confirm with the intensity outside vs inside)
    3. Though the observation is correct you need to compare running tracks proximities to highways to tarmarked roads vs untarmarked roads. you will be able to identify correlated attributes that make gated estates like Nyayo, Gatewall e.t.c have high numbers vs areas where the road network is undeveloped.
    Expand your search on this. You can try looking at amenities (Fastfood, Petrol Stations, Malls) to Strava data to identify sweetspots for commercial amenities that cater to conveniences like clubs/Eateries e.t.c

      Thank you for your response. Here is my response.
      1. I believe most people use Strava on their phones rather than on smartwatches. Only a small group use smartwatches on Strava.
      2. I was comparing activities within the barracks. Outside the barracks will be made up on mostly civilians running.
      3. I believe folks run on any terrain. It would not be a big hinderance factor. It is worth checking if runners stop for snacks, but my bet would be they don't.

      @@blackorwaI agree with you however it didn't come out clearly the source of Strava's data also any data within the barracks will be primary from officers (question is how many on an average sample of them know or use Strava), also you could be right about the terrain (just an unverified hypothesis could find a correlation between middle class neighborhoods, the quality of roads and the intensity of activities - jogging to be specific)
      Finally the last point wasn't about stopping for snacks but convince stores and amenities to support urban people's lifestyles, I.e you are more likely to see upscale lifestyle businesses near urban areas with a middle class population than a lower class neighborhood, and using your initial observation, question is would it be possible to predict the type of neighborhoods/residence that live in certain areas if you used the Strava + Businesses (middle class fast food, supermarkets, gyms, petrol stations) within the selected geo-radius. Something to consider?

    I think a lot of Kenyans don't use Strava when running for the data to be conclusive.

      Great point but then again, since strava is a 'niche' app for fitness enthusiasts, could we assume that over 75% of regular runners may have the app? This could make the data reliable when considering the sample size

    • @blackorwa
      @blackorwa  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The question would be why some Kenyans and others don't. The answer might be income difference.

      Good point, as a runner I don't use Strava because I dislike the social aspect of the app. I prefer to use the Nike Running Club(NRC) as it's personal to me and doesn't encourage me to post my activity. Something about Strava users 🤭

    So STRAVA will only track your physical activities if you have the App and turn it on ... most probably Kenyan police-force are not techno savvy or as enlightened as the armed forces mates who sit around in the barracks browsing most of the the times ... the police have their hands full chasing criminals and standing whole day on the dusty roads doing 'that thing

    • @blackorwa
      @blackorwa  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's correct, Strava only works when the app is turned on. The police also has units that sit around the whole day - GSU.
