love that old XR. Every time I'd go out and ride my KTM 2 stroke I'd run into someone with an old XR250, and to be honest, while it wasn't the oil and smoke spitting monster my KTM was, there was something magical about the XR250 that made me want one. It's a bike that reminds me of why I fell in love with dirtbikes as a kid.. is it the fastest and best? No way. Is it fast enough and good enough? Absolutely.
Couldn’t agree more. I owned one for many years and it was hands down the best dirt bike of all the bikes I’ve had. It did everything I asked it to, without complaint. And when things got gnarly or I got tired, it worked with me not against me.
I know this is a CRF250X comparison but here are my thoughts on bikes I had. I had a CRF450R that I sold for a XR400R Because I explore trails, not race tracks. CRF450R did not like to go slow while going over logs and tight corners, switchback hills and the suspension beat me up after a couple hours. XR400R can go over logs, rocks, sticks, tight corners, steep loose dirt hills, rivers, with no problem. Basically in my opinion CRF450R was a better jumper, racer, earth tilling machine, everything you will experience on a race track. XR400R is better in trails, tight switchbacks with hillclimbs, sticks, roots, logs, everything you will experience on trails.
I recently bought i KX250F and quickly realized it does not like low rpm, Terrible bike in the woods/technical trails. Great on the motorcross track though. I will be selling it and get a XR 400 R as I mostly ride in the forest.
@@H4nssoon XR400 is the better machine for trail only, but I had a KX250F and rode trails no problem. I liked the fact that I could ride trails and MX tracks with the KX. Can't do both on a 400 without a lot of investment and still won't match the KX on the MX track
Man the way you do these is really good! It's cool to see how the bikes do in different terrains, and REALLY cool to hear you explain why they do how they do. Great work man! So glad you're back!
I just bought a non running 1996 XR 250R for $450 the previous owner told me it burns oil but other than that it ran fine it has sat for four years in A shed in Michigan someone before the previous owner had spray-painted the gas tank black which now looks like a spotted pig The front and rear fender are not stock and are some black super Moto looking garbage that make me want to puke. First thing I’m doing is cleaning the carburetor getting the throttle body to move again and seeing if I can get the bike to start so that I can run it through the gears and pray that all it needs is a top and rebuild. I truly love this timeless beautiful machine and want to restore it back to its original beauty. I have a 2007 Honda Xr 650l and I love the XR line for its simplicity durability and reliability and thank you for your awesome videos that verify what I have found in these bikes.
I owned the 05 450x and while the bike was reliable and well built, I never could come to terms with the twitchy front end. The front end never felt planted. My XR600 and XR 400 turned just as well as the 450x but felt way more stable at speed. I have since switched to a Yamaha WR that handles excellent, more like the XR's but with way more power. Great Fricken video!
OLD SCHOOL XR! I rode a 1984 xr200r for 20 years before finally getting a new bike. I love my new bike, but I wish I still had the XR to fall back on from time to time! Great bikes, I'll never put them down.
I prefer the xr250 over the crf250x because of the maintenence schedule on the crf is too much. I have an xr650l and a crf450x and prefer my 650 because of the bullet proof motor when maintained. When I was a weekend warrior, the 450 needed to get the piston changed twice a year. I don't baby the throttle on these bikes, hitting the rev limiter all the time hauling ass. But I give respect to them on being shure the maintenence is top notch.
Xr250 would be my choice as its proven to be "bullet proof". I now own a crf250x and the maintance with shimming the valves worrying about radator damage etc. Dont get me wrong the crf250x is a beautiful machine but if im going on long day trips etc i wanna be sure ill get back. The xr is the machine for that. The thought of walking a bike back miles is what nightmares are made of.
I still like the old XR250R! It's still a great bike, I love riding it, and it goes anywhere I want it to go with no issues at all. I'm wondering if you can feel some sort of difference with the aluminum frame of the CRF. The steel frame of the XR does flex a bit, which contributes to the ride quality I would think. Can you feel any difference? As far as power goes, I don't really care. The XR250R has enough for the trail riding I like to do and it will climb just about anything; plenty of torque and a truly great 6 speed tranny!
Great video reviews. I'm in the process or rebuilding my 94 XR250L with a 277cc kit, R cam, oil cooler, and stiffer clutch springs. I can't wait to get out and enjoy it.
The XR250R was bad ass for it’s time though. As a kid my first big bike was an XR200R and I rode the hell out of that thing and it made me a great rider but took a lot of work on my part. I also couldn’t hang with most of two stroke buddies who had CR/YZ 125’s and a KDX 200. Then a trip to the local powersports dealer allowed me to view the venerable XR250R. This thing had a 4 valve head vs my little 2 valve head, a free flowing stock header, better stock gearing and the extra displacement. My old 195cc had met its match. Once I made the purchase and fired up the 250 I never looked back, thing had probably twice the power of my 200. It also did every bit of 70 mph or more so I had no problem keeping up with my 125 two stroke pals both in the woods and in the open straight.
I prefer the 250x because it is just a all around bike that can be mild or competitive with just a few modifications and call me crazy but I love performing maintenance, but not paying for it
Excellent comparison man, however I miss your CRF230F videos. I just started to ride bikes this year and I felt in love with enduro riding so believe me when I say that I have spent many hours looking for a youtuber that could appreciate CRF230F bikes as I do. And someday I would like to test (race) an XR250X as you did on this vid.
I wish you would also note the throttle response when you throttle up from idling... I've heard that fuel injected bikes respond slower than carbureted bikes, and that makes sense to me because of the garbage (electronics) that fuel injection uses verses pulling on a cable and the carburetor slide does exactly what you tell it to do precisely when you tell it to move.
Absolutely agree, efi engines are great at certain things but in a dirt bike I want analog. I run a XR650R, liquid cooled, kickstart, carburetor and no battery, yet oodles of torque to pass the efi 450s.
I have a 2006 250x and a 2013 KX 250F. I spend 90% of my time out in the Desert. I can tell you this that 250X is a fricken Cadillac. The KX is great too, however, I have tried everything to soften that suspension aside of replacing it. Flat out across the woops, the 250X is gone. Love them both but Ill stick with the 250X in the desert any day. The track, KX 250F. I don't even bother taking the 250x. Great video and thanks for taking the time to put it together. I'm gonna have to try a 250R one day, looks like fun.
The xr 250 shines in the woods . If this test were in the east on some slippery clay with log crossings , the xr 280 may have come out on top. Thanks for another excellent video
Once again, another great video Jim! I found it to be an interesting comparison because I'm the original owner of my '84 XR 500R as well as my CRF 450X.
I have a 98 xr 250 r have had 600r 500r out of all the xr rideing I have dun and 1000s of hr on yamaha yz and many on kx250 and the most legendary 125 kx 94 which is the most freely bike I have riden at 125cc it is a rocket not the fastest out flat but as fast as anything up to 45 or so ,having said that at 62 yr now I can say t xr250r is the most versatile bike ever made...
I’m getting back into dirt biking after being away from it for too long. I’ve been street riding, doing track days and road race schools for several decades now with very little dirt riding and atv-ing. I just sold my ‘85 XR200R I’ve owned since new that I had partially restored. It was almost too nice and too old to go out and punish again. I left it go for a good amount of money and to a good home. I found a new leftover ’17 250x for sale at a dealership 1100 miles away and I’m patiently awaiting its delivery. I really wanted a new, more modern trail bike. I hope I didn’t make a mistake lol!
I would definitely take the XR250R over the CRF250X but I'm a little biased, I grew up with the good old XR! One of my best friends growing up had a 1982 XR80, a few years later my uncle had a 1983 XR200R and later in life I bought a 1986 XR600R! I think it's just a better bike because of its reliability! The difference in speed is fairly negligible and can be addressed with rider skill in most cases! Thanks for another great video!
@@krisjato XRs in my opinion are the best multipurpose motorcycle, and great bikes for people to learn on, or for experienced riders. very forgiving, and of course bulletproof.
Hy, I think that it is 2 different pleasures, ride an old bike or a new one. You can have great fun with smallest budget with the XR, and the difference is not big with the newest. Very good video. Kris
I would much more prefer the xr over the crf because it is practically the same power air cooled not liquid like the crf and you hardly ever have to work on it
I'd always choose the XR. The XR is a fast bike, even when you're riding it super relaxed. The same can't be said for the CRF. You're either relaxed and cruising, or working your ass off to make it move.
I think if the XR wasn't bored out the CRF would have pulled away. Gotta love an old XR, good to have around when the CRF is down for maintenance. But the CRF is funner to ride fast. So because you may face more down time with the CRF I prefer both at the same time, that way you're never sitting around waiting for parts on a weekend that'd be perfect for riding.
XR has torque lower in the rpm range but the CRF is snappy and has high revs. With an overall lower gear ratio the CRF more than compensates for the rpm deficit though it would require more work for both the driver and the engine to achieve. Overall the CRF is the quicker though more involved bike to ride. CRF is a sprinter while the XR is a long haul cross country machine.
Always funny how everybody puts down the fount end on the xr. But I have never seen one fail and can say I have bashed them ad hard a can be bashed they never fail ever so think what u want the front end is more than up to the job.
I run an XR650R and I can't tell you how many times guys have swapped the front out to a CRF450 front end on these and I don't know why. The factory front end won many Baja 1000s and they truly are designed and built for hard Enduro and serious abuse. Haven't broke anything on mine and it gets run real hard. They claim it makes the front end feel lighter, but I say sit back a touch further, problem solved.
Sorry I'd definitely go with the xr due to its bullet proof engine ,no battery needed ,big on my scale and it's like a timex watch that just keeps running on n on !!!
I'd rather have the big bore xr. I'd retrofit better forks on it, possibly different rear shock and rims, but other than that it's BULLETPROOF and unstoppable.
Maybe it's just the camera angle but dang man you're fast!!! Any tips on how to get faster? I personally feel like I've hit a plateau, and it's cool to see how much faster you are now than you used to be in some of your older vids.
+aircooled ADV I like to work on specific skills one at a time. One place I can really do that is at the Motocross track. A lot of people think MX is dumb and I can't get anyone to go with me anymore, but it's fun and I always come away from it having learned something new, no matter what bike I have taken to the track. Heck, some of the most useful learning I've done was blasting a crf100f around a Motocross track!
Frickin Jim's Affordable Adventures Thanks for the tip! Only been on a mx track track once and being from Western Washington I don't have too much trouble with the tight stuff. Been lately riding alot of desert though and been getting my butt kicked (especially in sand). Will have to give an mx track a try!
@@markreiber4457 Got significantly better! Primarily due to switching to two strokes which forced me to learn better braking and weight distribution, doing it for a seasonal job, and of course, getting to ride an race with Gabe.
Hey buddy I love the channel I’m looking to do the 277 bore but was wondering what I tell the machine shop to bore it to a link for the measurements would be amazing if you can find the time
Stock piston size is 73 mm to bore over to a 277 cc you would need to bore over 4 mm to get you to a 77 mm sized piston which is 4 mm over sized don’t go any bigger or you risk cracking the sleeve. A piston kit is about 150 and the machine shop work about under 200
Great video and EX-CE-LENT E-NUN-CIA-TION! JK ! So, yup the XR torque and linear delivery is a beautiful thing. They're so manageable and predictable. The 250x out of the box just is so bad. I've spent years getting it to act like my old XR's for smooth throttle delivery. You're in high speed desert riding. I do technical high speed woods much slower but finesse is much more precise. I hated my 2009 crf250x until I got it dialed in. remove smog system, JD jetting kit, FMF Q4, CCC mods, lower 8mm in triple clamp, maxxis IT desert tires and finally satisfied. Once dialed in with minor mods the crf250x is so much better than the XR IMO and LOVE XRs.
+ChaoticDetour thanks for watching! Yes, I do need to do that! Haha QT50 wins in the super gnarly because it can just be picked up and carried on the shoulder!
Great video man! Those are both awesome bikes... you really can't go wrong with a Honda. I would have thought that the CRF250X would have smoked the older XR, but that is pretty awesome that the XR can hold it's own especially at those insanely high speeds. What's the status on the 230??
Hammering it mate I like to see that I got a crf250r my bros got the 250x and mine smokes his mines upgraded valves and camshaft but I'm getting a xr250r fck the crf250r it's a slag and hard to start my bro got e start lol a dream I can only wish but the xr250r will keep slugging on like a tractor for years longer than a crf250x or crf250r there bulletproof
The time you make up on the trail on the 250X you lose with the constant changing of oil, cleaning filters, redoing valves and pistons. XR por favor señor.
The modern amenities are nice though even if they don't translate into seconds shaved. Electric start, ergos for standing, better clutch. I still love my XR250R though. I just got a 2002 xr250r and I'm having problems kick starting it. It seems like I'm getting 1 revolution per kick which will never be enough for a start. How may revolution do you get on one kick ?
That sounds about right for an XR250R. One kick doesn't spin it over multiple times like on a small two stroke. Kick starting the XR250R can be slightly enraging at first. You have to slam it down through the power stroke for it to start.
Frickin Jim's Affordable Adventures ok thanks. This bike has set up for about 3 years and I bought it yesterday for 200$ went through and cleaned it all up. Guess I'll try to pull start it tomorrow.
Lol! That's why I put a bigger cam in my 230, to soften that massive, explosive, violent, earth shattering, unstoppable, uncontrollable, neck-breaking, shoulder-tearing, heart-stopping bottom end hit!

Hy, I think that it is 2 different pleasures, ride an old bike or a new one. You can have great fun with smallest budget with the XR, and the difference is not big with the newest. Very good video. Kris
This was awesome! Thank you. Gotta love the classic XR's :D
Great to see new content. Looking forward to more. Cheers!
+maXim0200 thanks for watching!
I would much more prefer the xr over the crf because it is practically the same power air cooled not liquid like the crf and you hardly ever have to work on it
Love your channel Jim thanks for the latest!
+Michael Provenzano thanks for watching!
Exactly
XR has torque lower in the rpm range but the CRF is snappy and has high revs. With an overall lower gear ratio the CRF more than compensates for the rpm deficit though it would require more work for both the driver and the engine to achieve. Overall the CRF is the quicker though more involved bike to ride. CRF is a sprinter while the XR is a long haul cross country machine.
Great video, thank you! I am planning on buying a 250X, electric start all day haha
I will take the XR250R on the basis of comfort alone
Nice xr very strong smooth 😍 driving....my motorcycle is XR 200R...
The XR was a tight woods east coast bike. I'd like to see these bikes compaired on tight single track. Good video tho
I watched the first minute and listened to the motors. I'm saying same same. I am going to watch the ending now.
The xr did way better than I thought, def go with that
After watch your other vids think Ill stick with the KDX. Great info and riding thanks for the videos.
What year are those 2 bikes? And where did you test those bikes at?
Dude I can’t believe all these vids are from 6yrs ago
Which bike of the two would you prefer spending a full day on the trails riding...and why?
Sorry I'd definitely go with the xr due to its bullet proof engine ,no battery needed ,big on my scale and it's like a timex watch that just keeps running on n on !!!
nice ride ..... just wondering the gearing was the same 12/48 13/52 ???
I'd rather have the big bore xr. I'd retrofit better forks on it, possibly different rear shock and rims, but other than that it's BULLETPROOF and unstoppable.
Ok, which feels heavier? XR with big high gas tank? Currently looking at both of these bikes for my 13-year-old son
XR motor into the CRF frame?
I would love to see an XR vs CRF250X vs CRF250F video. :)
Me too. I havent even ridden a crf250f yet, or even heard of someone owning one that I know
I had a xr250r, sold it to get a crf250f, and now I am looking for an xr again. Not nearly the machine the stock xr is. Way too heavy for my liking
A piston kit is about 150 and the machine shop work about under 200
You should get an XR400
Once dialed in with minor mods the crf250x is so much better than the XR IMO and LOVE XRs.
the difference is that one lasts a lifetime and the other 150 hours
Ain't that the truth
Long live the XRs! Literally you can find them in a barn or field 20 years later and make them run, not sure the CRF s will be that way.
Good comparison. You should steal Tylers WR for a day and compare it to the XR. Oooo or better yet, QT50 vs XR in the technical sections! Good stuff
+Each Adventure I was surprised that my XR is still good at something as well :)
Xr250r is a beast, had one
Hammering it mate I like to see that I got a crf250r my bros got the 250x and mine smokes his mines upgraded valves and camshaft but I'm getting a xr250r fck the crf250r it's a slag and hard to start my bro got e start lol a dream I can only wish but the xr250r will keep slugging on like a tractor for years longer than a crf250x or crf250r there bulletproof
The time you make up on the trail on the 250X you lose with the constant changing of oil, cleaning filters, redoing valves and pistons. XR por favor señor.
ArmasADVish yep that old XR is very very close to being zero maintenance.
It's a wash and comes down to the rider PERIOD...
how would you compare the xr with a crf250L?
Good job well done.
My thoughts. You need some woods to ride in to really challenge you. 😉
I love both bikes. Although I am a little biased since I own a 97 xr250r
+Luke Morrow thanks for watching!
I have a 99 xr250r fuckin love it
Iove those older xrs
The whole crf line is way over priced. Especially when you see time after time that a 20 year old XR hangs with or beats them in every situation.
The modern amenities are nice though even if they don't translate into seconds shaved. Electric start, ergos for standing, better clutch. I still love my XR250R though.

Great stuff
On my xr250r on the front says xr250r and on the back where the seat bolts at says xr250r2 what dose it mean
xr250r2=2002, xr250r3=2003...
Xr 250r is the best for me....
I vote for the XR
I’m old school at heart; the CRF can never be a XR.
Bring back the xr 250 I should dc have never sold it
This shall be interesting.
Pit those against a Wr250r!
have you evere listen abouth the xr250L call tornado its made for south america only and its a legend here but its not a enduro bike i have one and get inspire in your videos i wish some day( its my fist bike jajaj) i can ride half way at list like you ride men aweraome videos and maybe some day you can reviw the xr250L tornado!!!!! but i understand tant dont sell it in us
I just got a 2002 xr250r and I'm having problems kick starting it.
Wesley Seay Get it fixed? Want to sell it?
You win!
Yeah but I was rooting for the other guy tbh!
Where was this filmed?
branded things are legend very nice..
XR
Que linda la XR👆
230F would've beat both of them... A friends, second cousin's friend raced his 230f against a hellcat and won. You just can't bet the 230.
Lol! That's why I put a bigger cam in my 230, to soften that massive, explosive, violent, earth shattering, unstoppable, uncontrollable, neck-breaking, shoulder-tearing, heart-stopping bottom end hit!
They should put that in the 230's brochure. lol
lol the 230 would loose two the 250x and xr the 230 has 15hp the crf250x has 35hp the xr250 has 24hp
Lmao u must spend a lotta time on Thumpertalk!
XR650R has entered the chat lol
How is the build going with the little 50
No es la moto,es el piloto
That's why I suggest everyone just get a pw50 and be done with it 😉
It sounds like you need a 450
all are good conditions.
hi i realy love your chanel!!!!!! but what abouth of the fun favtor?
250 xr better, tuffer, stronger and more indestructible👍
Fun.
face reveal!!!
Really/ come on man xr obviuslly😂😂😁😁
