    Sorry for the mess up GT crew, been informed that apparently there are two different versions and I have the Evo grip 18 and The evogrip S 18 actually has a lock for the blade. Very cool check them both out appreciate you guys bringing this to my attention.

      It was an understandable mistake, Aaron. The EvoGrip 18 is usually red and black, and the S18 is usually yellow and black. In fact, before your video, I had no idea there were yellow and black 18's out there! Now I want one. And it's all your fault! 😂😂😂

    I carry a SAK everyday and usually a modern folder only because I’m a knife guy. The SAK is all 95% of the general public needs as an knife / multi tool on a daily basis.

    • @tsankotsankov760
      @tsankotsankov760 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I totally relate to that. I find a SAK so much more useful then a simple folder (be it a high end one) for everyday use. There are so much real daily tasks that can be done with it. It is very rare that you need a serious knife.

  • @KiwiDragn

    I like the Huntsman model. Corkscrews are great for undoing tough knots and I find myself using the small blade more often than the larger one because I feel like I have more control and a finer edge. The parcel hook that comes on the Huntsman/Fieldmaster is great so long as you're using a little ingenuity - I use it to carry litter boxes with the plastic packing strap handles. It's really about what options you can make work for you and what models have those options.
    The Evo series uses a lot of the Wenger brand tools and are different from the other knives. I hear a lot of it is hit or miss, especially the scissors because they have micro serrations that catch and fold on stuff like cord and bankline. Gotta research your buy.

    • @TheSpoovy
      @TheSpoovy 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Also a big fan of the huntsman. The only thing I missed was a locking blade but its really easy to wrap a bit of paracord around it to do the same job. I never go into the woods, hiking, anywhere outdoors really without it.

  • @bplus2625
    @bplus2625 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    For those with eye or sun glasses the file/nail cleaner can be carefully sharpened at the end to make an excellent eyeglass screwdriver and will still perform the other functions. If you have no use for glasses or a nail cleaner you can file/sharpen it flat on the end to make a scraper and small wedge for opening stuck jar lids.

  • @timsummers870
    @timsummers870 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    That saw has a lot more potential than just making notches. Watch Felix Immler’s channel to see how far one can go with a SAK.

  • @tidge879
    @tidge879 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I've got to disagree about you with the file. Especially outdoors. Combined with the scissors, if you catch/cut your fingernail and it always catches when you put your gloves on, it's the perfect tool.
    Also, when you're outdoors, you don't know if that's dirt, or shit under your fingernails.
    The corkscrew is great for unpicking super tight knots.
    The flat head driver on the evos (a holdover from the Wenger line) actually recesses under pressure and won't fold if you're putting pressure on it.

    • @frailhammer
      @frailhammer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @cloudcleaver23
      @cloudcleaver23 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'd appreciate a Cadet with the scissors INSTEAD of the blade. It could be airline-safe, and would make a less redundant companion to a more proper EDC knife while retaining its thin profile.

    the point on the nail file is very useful as a small screwdriver. used it to tighten glasses and to remove the backside of my timex watch to replace the battery. and the file always comes in handy when my finger nails crack or split.

  • @nmende00
    @nmende00 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The phillips screwdriver in that position is redundant. the can opener/bottle cap opener can do basic screwdriver functions. with corkscrew you can use it to untie knots, you can use it to carry a micro screw driver for repairing glasses.

    This model SAK was original to Wenger SAK's. The sculpted handle and the scissors with the lever operating off the mainspring rather than it's own independent spring like you see on most other Victorinox models were design features specific to Wenger SAK's.. When Victorinox bought out Wenger much of their production stopped, but the plant making this model keep on producing. One of the things I hated to see go was the hook shaped can opener on the Wenger SAK's, I found that style opener more useful for tasks other than opening cans. I still have some Wenger SAK's including one with a locking main blade. The small Wenger SAK with nail clippers is part of my EDC.

  • @franzjaegers
    @franzjaegers 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I do have a Evogrip 18 wich is Wenger made. It's on of the models Victorinox kept in there portfolio when they purchased Wenger. The Wenger can opener was of a different design, that was swiched over to that of Victorinox. I also have a Wenger made Evogrip 17 with walnut grips. The difference is it has a corkscrew instead of the phillips. And it lacks the tweezers and the toothpicks. The tweezers and the toothpick of Wenger are also a slightly different design. Victorinox still uses the Wenger brand for Suitcases and Watches.

  • @spopp17
    @spopp17 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I really like Victorinox knives and I have had one for years. The saw is very impressive and can do a lot more than just cut branches. I once used one to cut off a brass padlock by cutting through the brass itself. The large teeth on the saw make good for cutting soft nonferrous material like brass and copper.

    I carry a Swiss Army Trekker in my EDC and in the woods I carry the Rangergrip 78. The Evogrip s18 is smaller and looks like it's a great tool for those that don't need the larger versions.

  • @edisontrent5244
    @edisontrent5244 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I carry the locking version daily. I would note that the huntsman/field master is probably a better deal if you don't want the locking blade and honestly the scissors are better. The evogrips are a bit shorter which can be helpful. As I am mostly urban, I wish someone one create scales that would have eye glass screwdriver instead of the toothpick.

    • @barrybogart5436
      @barrybogart5436 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do know they have an eyeglass driver that screws into the corkscrew, right? It's a couple of bucks.

    • @edisontrent5244
      @edisontrent5244 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@barrybogart5436 Yes, however then you need to make a choice of what you will use more often a Phillips driver or an emergency eye glass tool. I have never used the toothpick on a SAK. I currently carry a S18 and Leatherman PS4. The tip of the PS4 flat Philips acts as my eyeglass screw driver. I may be transitioning to an explorer since it has the corkscrew for the micro driver and a inline phillips.

    I'll stay with my 36 years EDCed Swiss Champ. It has saved my bacon in ways that EVO 18 just can't. Also, I'll take original Victorinox knives and tools designed by Victorinox over Wenger knives and tools that only recently were rebranded as Victorinox.

    The main blade on these little models can be pinch opened with thumb and forefinger. No nail nick needed. And better blade belly than similar Vic model. If you keep to light tasks, the blade doesn't dull all that fast. An outstandingly useful bit of kit!
    THANKS,
    David.

  • @3bears
    @3bears 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have this model and it's predecessor, old Wenger P18. The Vic'nox 'updated' version brings huge quality of life upgrades like the better toothpick & tweezers, can opener and awl while still marinating nice features like the serrated scissors ( that'll cut braided fishing line ) and the more leaf like Wenger blade.

  • @Seancmccormick
    @Seancmccormick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Check out the alox series. They're thinner, blades slightly bigger, stronger back springs. They even have a farmer X now. I find little use for the saw though which is why I gravitate towards the Pioneer X. Lots to love about any of the sak's. Atb Sean

  • @carlrooker
    @carlrooker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    An interesting knife. I do love the victronic series.
    I agree with you about the Phillips screwdriver. I believe they put it where they do for torque, but like you said you can't reach into smaller spaces. And if you put the Phillips screwdriver where you suggested, and only opened it at 90°, you can get an awful lot of torque with it.
    I disagree with you about the usefulness of the saw. While you can take a dry branch and break it in your hands, or a thicker one between two trees, even this small saw can be useful for precise cuts and for cutting green branches for tools. Especially fishing poles. And the precise cuts would be more appropriate for emergency shelter building, and other tools. A larger saw would be nice, but this will do well in a pinch.
    I would like to see the nail file replaced with a regular file like the Swiss champ, which can do nails, but also metal. I even used the metal file to cut into thin metal.

    In some you tube videos with Swiss army knifes some people say the wood saw is not needed as when you collect fire wood you can just break it with your foot which is quicker but that only works with you old dead wood to a certain extent but if collecting from fresh fallen trees that still contain a bit of freshness in the wood it doesn't break so easily so in that case you would need a small wood saw on n order to trim and collect

    Never really used the saw on my SAK until I bought a camping hammock; now it's an essential complement to remove those annoying little growths that get in the way of tie straps. Now I can poke and stab materials with the main blade like plastic bottles and wood surfaces without worry of the blade folding and causing injury. The bottle opener/flathead screwdriver is also auto locking so you can leverage heavy use without worry of the blade folding on you. With the wood saw, awl, and scissors, it's the awesome Huntsman with a locking blade. Wish Victorinox offered the locking blade (with liner lock) on all it's medium sized knives as an option like this as it's a safety feature more than anything.

    one of many that I own, but I carry this one daily.

    Thanks for the review, Aaron. Just a note - the S18 blade is LOCKING, not slipjoint. It has that over most other SAKS that size.

      Did you watch the video? It doesn't have a lock. Model number for the one with a lock is 2.4913.SC8. Model but without the lock is 2.4913.C8 (S = safety or secure)

      @@yespeace2000 I did watch the video. And I am quite familiar with the SAK. I have carried it for a few years now. There is a version that has no lock, but it's called the Evolution Grip 18 or EvoGrip 18 and has red and black scales. The yellow and black version, the EvoGrip S18, is the locking version.

    When out backpacking or biking it pays to carry an extra 2 to 3 days of extra rations that you planned on using to cover you if things go wrong because things don't always go to plan so you have to counterplan swiss army knives are a good tool but they aren't always going to save you

    I sharpened one side of the file of my SAK so that I got a second blade. Two thirds of the file are still there so it turns out a really nice combo small edge/file.

    I do like the locking option of the ex-Wenger models, but for my hands they feel just a bit too short. I prefer the original Victorinox with 91mm. The difference is only 8mm but you can definitively feel the difference. I keep the EvoGrip in my tool case, but my EDC is a now 25 year old model which isn't listed any longer - basically the SwissChamp but without the pliers. I also have a SwissChamp, but again it just doesn't feel as comfy in my hands as my old knife. Must be the habit 😂

    Good knife. But I prefer the Evogrip S18 with the corkscrew because you can put the FireAnt. It is much more useful than a Philips for the outdoor.

    Honestly, I wasn't really aware of this, but it does seem like a great choice. I think the girth on this one makes the main blade much more capable in the outdoors. Nice pick Aaron. Thanks for showing it mate.

    I have three of these in the S16. Each slightly different. There is an S16 Evogrip that has a locking blade. The one you showed without the locking blade. And there is the Evo S16 (with or without locking blade), which was discontinued. My 3 models do not have the saw, and are 1 layer thinner. They are the ideal SAK knife. I completely agree. I like the Alox cadet as well. Great recommendation and video!

    Ref. the small blades, I keep the small blade razor sharp for medical/first aid purposes and use the large blade for everything else.
    Otherwise I combine the climber (corkscrew sister to tinker I believe) with a Leatherman Rebar.

  • @qui-gone

    For outdoors I prefer the Huntsman. It has all the tools the evogrip 18 has except the proper philips. Has that backup blade which I tend to use more than the main blade on my Huntsman (cutting open food packs / supplies). It's also cheaper I think. Of course it doesn't have the grip.
    Also has a corkscrew that can be used to store a small ferro rod or spectacle screw driver.
    For city carry (especially when I was living in Europe where locking blades are a big no no), I preferred the pioneer.
    The punch / reamer on pioneer is essentially one hand opening and works well as a last ditch survival stabber. The pioneer reamer is one of the best underrated tools on SAKs.
    Aaron, you should also review the Farmer X it you get a chance. I think that's a perfect backpacker's SAK. Minus the toothpick, tweezers.

    I have a Rangergrip 78, and it is the best woods/hiking SAK I have ever seen. it is similar to the 58 you show. it has mostly the same set of tools, but minus the second game prep blade and scissors. the scissors being absent does not bother me as I carry a gen 1 wave, and use those scissors when I need them.

    Both of these knives are designed by Wenger. The tools are therefore not identical to Victorinox original ones (and I'm not speaking just about the size). Personally, I think EvoGrip is too small, which is good in office environment or around the garden, to save you the trip to tool chest. But than again, I have Classic on my keychain, using it all the time. For cleaning my fingernails, mostly! (so, that tool isn't useless, "Gideon Statistical" ;)

    I’ve seen a lot of videos on Victorinox. This might be the first they admits the saw is not best suited form cutting trees, but more for notches and finish work. Gave me a new view on that tool.

    • @kothaelser3282
      @kothaelser3282 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The teeth are not bend so that they cut a channel wider than the saw blade's spine thickness. Even if the saw was 20" long or something it would still suck at cutting down trees because it would simply get stuck.
