Introduction to the work:
Beethoven, the titan, the unwavering genius. This exaggerated image of the composer, which developed in the 19th century, has quite objective foundations. One example of this is a mammoth concerto with which Beethoven rather immodestly introduced himself to the Viennese public: On December 22, 1808, he pulled out all the stops at the Theater an der Wien and presented exclusively his own pieces. The Fifth and Sixth Symphonies were premiered, as well as the Choral Fantasy op. 80. And that was not all: there were also various parts from the Mass in C major and a great aria - as well as the Fourth Piano Concerto. The composer Johann Friedrich Reichardt wrote: "We held out in the bitterest cold from half past six to half past ten and found the experience proven that one can easily have too much of a good thing - and even more so, too much of a strong thing."
Beethoven also cleverly polished up his value time and again with horrendous admission prices. A contemporary newspaper review of a similar marathon premiere of his Third Piano Concerto states that he had "the first seats double, the closed seats triple, and each box (instead of 4 [florins]) paid for with 12 ducats". He used this means of inflated prices so skillfully for his prestige that there was even a rumour circulating that he had made a profit of 1800 guilders from this single concert evening - the salary of a high civil servant at the time. And not the monthly salary, but the annual salary.
However, the conditions for the first public performance of the fourth piano concerto were not particularly rosy. The orchestra of the Theater an der Wien was so bad to Beethoven at the time that he was not allowed to be present in the hall during rehearsals. He allegedly paced back and forth in the next room - and after every movement, the conductor is said to have come to him to discuss which detail he would like to have improved and how. However, the sources do not reveal how the interaction between Beethoven at the piano and the orchestra was possible in this way.

I grow more impressed with Avdeeva every time I see her perform. She has strength but sensitivity, doesn't feel the need to blur through each passage at top speed. She has a very mature and elegant approach to every piece she plays.

I agree with you completely, but please listen to her completely virtuosic live performance with Liszt h minor sonata and by far the best version of the pictures at an exhibition on TH-cam. They offer everything including the highest tempo. Avdeeva is an absolutely extraordinary pianist who has a great sense of when to use exactly what. Many other pianists have succumbed to the exibitionism of playing as quickly and affectively as possible. Avdeeva is currently the best the market has to offer.

This piano concerto is probably the most tender, the most poetic and the most free too... The superlatives follow one another under the most diverse pens during its parution. The fourth concerto captivates with the extreme elegance and perfection of its melodic, harmonic and rhythmic fabric. A masterpiece of lyrical essence but deeply introverted. The entry of the open piano, as poetic as it is discreet, from the first measure of the allegro moderato, is an innovation which can remind us of Mozart (concerto K 271) only on a conceptual level. With austere gravity, the andante con moto offers pre-impressionist sounds where the piano and the orchestra are treated as distinct individuals, personalizing a fusion of timbres and a polarization of registers. This slow, concentrated movement is undoubtedly the most internally dramatic ever conceived in a concerto reaches one of the peaks imperious and audacious. Piano and orchestra alternate in a dialogue with melodic accents such as no concerto has hitherto heard. The sequence with the brilliant finale, here we witness a harmony between the orchestral tutti and the soloist, not without a certain very Beethovenian alternation between gentleness and impetuosity, is itself astonishingly natural, sign in this exceptional work, an inspiration and ease absolutely sovereign. I was able to experience fantastic concerts with the WDR Symphony Orchestra when I was studying in Cologne 35 years ago, but this concert is a great moment. I have never heard the 4th Piano Concerto so clearly and dynamically. Yuliana Avdeeva haas proven again that she is one of the very best that the piano scene has to offer. No one has this unrivaled touch and this musicality. The reason why the Philarmonie was so empty was because she simply didn't have enough clothes . People come to the concert today to see naked skin and high heels. This is easier to get a record deal.I really wonder why they don´t go to Helene Fischer ( a german starlet singer)!

I never weary of this piano concerto (even if its origins pre-performance were less than auspicious as Otto Hagedorn would have us believe in the program notes here). The second set is pure and simple a heartbreaker, and the sets that frame it provide the proper joyous balance. Well-played by all parties...I am again well-pleased! JAT

The high heel comment is surely a not so hidden critique on the dress outfits of Yuja Wang who, as anyone who knows and loves music will know depends not either on her dress choices. I advice the author to blindfold him or herself during next concert of Yuja Wang he or she watches of Yuja 😢and starts listening..without prejudices. She is a musical giant by any standard and in her own right just like Julianne.

First I've heard of Yulianna Avdeeva. She dresses more modestly than Yuja Wang, which I, as a Christian, think is good. She has a distance to go to compete with Yuja Wang's popular appeal. But this is a start. All talent, and the gift of music, come from the Triune, Eternal God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Believe in Jesus and hear the angelic choirs in heaven when you die!

Ugh. Utter disaster at 32:10. Unbelievable. Orchestra players and conductor should be ashamed of themselves. That is one of the worst orchestra mistakes Ive ever heard. How could the pianist put up with that? The clarinetist got way off somehow. Not blaming her alone though. The breakdown began shortly before. This is what happens when orchestras have minimal rehearsals and don't take concertos seriously enough to practice the parts on their own time.
