Resistance: Fall of Man is a 2006 science-fiction horror first-person shooter video game for the PlayStation 3. It was developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The game is set in an alternate history 1951, and follows Sergeant Nathan Hale as he and the human resistance forces attempt to drive a mysterious alien-like invasion out of Britain. The story continues in its sequel Resistance 2.
The game was originally developed under the title I-8, as it was the eighth title to be in production by Insomniac Games. It was released as a PlayStation 3 launch title in Japan on November 11, 2006, in the United States on November 17, 2006 and in Europe on March 23, 2007. Resistance had positive critical reception, garnering particular praise in view of its status as a launch title and winning several awards, as well as being the first PlayStation 3 game to sell over one million copies, followed immediately by MotorStorm.
Sony and Insomniac Games have since become embattled with the Church of England for using interior shots of Manchester Cathedral to recreate the building within the game, as well as "promoting violence" within the building. Resistance was Insomniac's first game to receive M for Mature by the ESRB.
The game, along with its sequels Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 shut down its online servers on April 8, 2014.

Nothing but fond memories for me with this game. Even then I didn't think it was the best FPS ever made, but I loved the world and I loved the multiplayer. I hope Sony revisits Resistance one day.

You're right that the enemies in "Resistance" are tough SOBs and the game is often frustrating but it actually makes you use your brains during combat and it still feels very satisfying when you manage to win a battle or survive an onslaught by the Chimera because you used some strategy. There are so many shooters where the enemies drop like flies and end up being boring. Just like Half-Life 1-2, the game world also feels believable and as you progress you're curious to see what the Chimera will throw at you in your next step. The "Resistance" games can be found used for just a few Euros each and they all offer pretty long single player campaigns compared to most modern FPS, and they still look and play great even today so I think they're a must play for PS3 owners.
Emman SM No, knowing what weapon is best for what enemy would've been more of using your head, say for example the bigger guys were weaker to explosives or something.
It's bad game design for enemies taking a good two clips full of ammo, but somehow can die in one hit by melee, they're not fucking zombies they're aliens.
***** High difficulty can be either enjoyable, or frustrating. When a game is well designed with the high difficulty in mind and gives you tools and mechanics that you can master and thus become a better player, it's enjoyable (Dark Souls, Hotline Miami). When a game is hard because of bad game design, illogical AI, unexpected difficulty spikes and useless weapons, it's frustrating (Resistance).

My first PS3 game and my first online multiplayer game. I couldn't believe the guys that put out Ratchet and Clank were the ones behind this game. I freaking loved this game. 👌

I found plenty of use for a lot of guns in the game, especially the auger. It's a hard game but I think the fact that it gets you to play strategically is a good thing. When you get bottle necked, that's when the auger is most useful, as well as the gun that lets you shoot around corners. I do agree that the savepoints are too far apart though. A fast paced shooter should have frequent checkpoints or allow you to quicksave.
The Uncharted series has more than its fair share of flaws too, so I wouldn't recommend that over it. I do think Resistance 3 is the best game in this series though. Where as the second game is easily the worst.

Killzone 2 servers are also been shut down. I had allot of fun playing Killzone 2's multiplayer is it's BS that the servers have recentlly been shut down. Allot of people wanted to me to play some Killzone 2 MP with me, because I was pretty good at the game, but honestlly, PS3 has free to play online and has great games, even from online stand point and it's retarted that they shut down servers for a console that actually still holds up well till this day. :/

This is probably my all time favorite game, beat it on the hardest difficult and collected all the achievements, and as a FYI most of the guns have features alot of people didn't figure out, the bullseye and rocket have three different ways to use it.

This was a really good launch title no matter what. I did have a sweet 56" Samsung DLP TV at the time which made it cooler but still!
This game was unbalanced at times, but the setting, story and gameplay made the punishment worth it to me. Unlike most games I wouldn't get pissed off dying over and over again, it just made me want to get better. If I played it again, i might feel differently, but at the time it was so a cool game, nothing ells was really like, except for Half-Life 2 which is still one of my all time favorites.
yes, it is hard and unfair at times, but doable in a sense that even contextually, the chimera are supposed to be humanity's biggest threat, so despite all that, is a fun ride
I really enjoyed the game, myself. To be honest, though, I agree with you on alot of points about the game. There's nothing special about the game but it is a solid FPS that fans of the genre will love. That's all that matters, I guess. Thanks for your review.

I was fascinated how much the Resistance games encapsulate the change in design in first person shooters - from old school to new school and back. Cant wait to hear what you think about the other two, although for me its clear that the third game is the very best.
This game is a perfect example of the brown age of gaming that we experienced early in the 7th gen.

Salokin Sekwah Killzone is dogshit. 2 weapon limit, bullet spongy enemies, regenerating health bar (with a low amount of health, so you spend most of your time in cover), terrible level design, limited enemy variety...you get the idea.

DrearierSpider1 Well I always liked the design of Killzone'e enemies, but then again I really do like Jin-Roh and those designs. I really think they should have buckled down on that almost black and white aesthetic though and expanded the enemy variety beyond that.
I think Its safe to say THIS was the FIRST game that ALOT of ppl got to experience ONLINE gaming with for the FIRST TIME EVER because it was the launch title for the Ps3 and free online PSN and lots of ppl got there 1st taste of being able to kill ppl across the world on an internet line on a console. 2006 was a much MUCH simpler time..

I don't remember this game being difficult at all. Just have to make sure you're always aiming for their heads. Also, like other Insomniac games, it's all about using your full arsenal to its full potential; always use the right weapon for the right situation, and make use of alternate fire modes too.

You can just use the bullseye for 90 percent of the game tho. I personally prefer staying with human weapons for the most part as it gives a bigger challenge to me
Thanks for the review!Since Resistance was the first game I had on the PS3 I played it so many times that I overrated it because of nostalgia but you helped me see it for what it actually is.One example is the difficulty:it is indeed very unfair and back in 2006 I had to replay some segments at least 10 times because of the Chimera's fucking accuracy but I completely forgot about it because since I played for almost 10 years I know every single enemy location and how to exploit their poor A.I. so I can play it blindfolded even on the highest difficulty.

'Chimera troops aren't the brightest bunch', I respectfully disagree.:S They were bloody geniuses! The closer you got to the end, the better they would know to switch places, dodge and shoot to make generic strafing a pretty useless tactic. You'd duck below a low wall, wait and get a grenade thrown in your burrow.:S Heavily-wounded, they would charge at you in a last ditch suicidal attempt to kill you, they would run, circle,... IIRC it does take a little bit to realize it, but as far as I'm concerned, the Chimera really were some of the smartest AI ever back then.:/
You're awesome man! I really liked the resistance series but if you look online everyone shits on it any chance they can get :/ it deserves a fair an honest review and you're the man who can do it.
Coming from someone who's beaten this game on superhuman on solo, this game is hard, as in REALLY HARD, but it's still fair, except for those stupid checkpoints, that are well placed but WAAAY too infrequent.
I know that seems very odd considering how fast enemy projectiles moves, but it is possible to dodge them mid air using crouching, jumping, crouch jumping & clever use of moving left & right. I do think the projectiles should move slower on lower difficulties, so not huge amounts of people just quit early on, but as long as u don't just use serious sam style circle strafing & hope for the best u can become beastly at this game. A lot of ppl complained about the bullet sponge enemies in this game myself included, but u have to remember the carbine is absurdly accurate & the bullseye tags are 100% accurate & the enemies drop bullseye tags like crazy.
If u can master dodging bullets mid air & headshoting enemies like crazy, my god it's satisfying.
Back in 2006, there were hardly any games for the PS3 so most people had this and Motorstorm, which was another super difficult game. But because of a lack of options, I was able to finish this on Superhuman difficulty, and I also finished all golds in Motorstorm. When I replay these games now, I always wonder how the hell I finished these games. Was I that much better then? Are my reflexes that much slower now? A true mystery lol.
Just recently finished this for the second time (got it on launch) and i gotta say the strategy required in this game more than makes up for the number of times you die.
I actually bought a ps3 last month and since then have played through all three resistence games.
Resistance was one of the funnest co op experiences ever for me, why can't games be like that anymore? Where you can play the whole actual campaign in split screen co op, it was so frickin fun. Same with Resistance 3 (I never got to play the second one)
the second game had 8 player coop online! It was pretty fun, but the game mechanics just felt a little janker than R1. I cant remember if it even has 2 player splitscreen coop though.
Finished this game for the first time on Normal a week ago, I liked it a lot because the framerate was stable, you could carry more than two weapons at once and weapons had secondary fire modes (something of a rarity back when it came out), the wide variety of enemies and the Chimera themselves, since I love Quake IV and the Strogg are probably the creepiest enemy faction in FPS history, the Chimera reminded me of them, and that's a good thing.
I do agree with the "lack of checkpoints" part, however, I was doing pretty well for the most part but as I approached the end, the difficulty skyrocketed and I started dying a lot more, which made me dread what was ahead.
Should've played on Easy to spare myself of the frustration and headache, and if I play this again someday, it'll be on that difficulty for sure. About the better weapons getting almost no ammo, I completely disagree - the further you get into the game, the more ammo you get for these guns, *especially* the Auger, which has saved my ass *many* times during the late game.
I didn't know the weaponless Chimera in the bases could bite you for years.
I introduced my cousin to this game and when we got to that part, one of them attacked and we both screamed lol
This is one tough game, but I thought it was satisfyingly tough. Didn't even bother playing it on Hard mode (although I tried my best to unlock all the medals), this game on "Normal" was tough enough. The carbine and even the bullseye were great to play with, and shooting the Chimera in the head with the Fareye was a real pleasure. Killing that huge dog-like chimera with the shotgun (the shotgun was great) was really fun too. The level where you enter the conversion chambers are very well designed (just like the later levels), and that battle scene in Manchester was...fucking awesome! Eventually, of course, it gets really fucking hard (especially in the London levels). You really have to practice in order to get good, but I love games that do that. Had to play it twice, in order to get the new weapons...and I did not regret it!
I just wish the 2nd game was a good follow-up, but apart from the graphics and one or two other aspects (namely the storyline and some new weapons), it pales in comparison. It just feels like so much wasted potential...

I got this game for $1 from GameStop. yes its hard and but I loved it. try to keep distance, in close range move left and right while aiming and shooting the enemy. Be accurate and make every bullet count.

How does it stand up now in 2020? Godly. I discovered this game two weeks ago and the controls felt a bit clanky at first, but once I got used to them, it became one of my favourite shooters.
Just finished it last week and totally agree, it is awesome
the bullseye CAN be a perfect accuracy weapon. If you tag your target like you are supposed to, every shot you fire after that, will hit that target, even if you are aiming straight up in the air.
Be interesting to see you tackle them all. One of my favorite PS3 franchises, that I think needs a swift kick to the coin purse. Looking forward to it!

This is one of those games that really changed with each passing game.
Technically in the Resistance universe WW2 never happened. Russia never became communist, and Germany was treated well after ww1 so that never turned into Nazi Germany
This game was one of those rare moments where I wanted a console game ported over to PC so I could play it. Come to think of it, I have only had these thoughts with Playstation games.
Multiplayer had this awesome horde/mission mode
These games were hard, but I think they were mainly made for Coop.
All the different two mode firing guns were what made it for me. and playing single couch coop

A solid review as always Gggman, but there's one thing near the end that leaves me curious. You only show Uncharted 2 as a better shooter on the PS3. Did you not like the PS3 Killzone entries? I can understand not liking Killzone 2, but I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts on Killzone 3.

Man. I’m mad at this video. I played this game a bajillion times. Every difficulty, co-op, multiplayer. Behind the Half-Life series it’s my favorite shooter. It’s kind of secret lab WW2/1950s (one of my favorite concepts, fallout doesn’t quite do it right) plus cool ass weapons and a magic bag to hold them in. The first one is a 9.5/10. I’d pay $200 for a mod to resistance 2 for a weapon wheel that unfucks the trash ass Halo COD two weapon shit from a fucking alternate reality sci-fi fantasy game. 3 was cool. Ending wasn’t super good but they had that St. Louis level and weapon wheel. I think it could still be a great series but I’ll always cherish all my time with rfom
Sweet. looking forward to those reviews. This is the first actual review I've ever seen of this game. I like the idea behind it and the gunplay looks decent enough. Shame about that weapon ammo though, but it does bring to mind the old school shooter weapons which sometimes had great variety and imagination.
This game had its problems but it was pretty damn good. Easy difficulty is a little too easy and normal is pretty challenging, akin to the second highest difficulty in Call of Duty games. Any higher and it's broken to play because enemies become super bullet sponges, making the shooting feel bad. The story is a bit bland but the scenario is cool and the level design is pretty solid.
The game has great graphics and performs well considering its an early 720p game. It's one of the smoothest 30FPS targeted games I've played on the PS3 and it feels great. Barely ever slows down even during the big battles. A lot of other PS3 titles use 600p or 640p on the PS3 and end up being a little blurrier than a lot of Xbox titles. This game looks and plays great. My only real complaint about the visuals is a lack of color. The game is almost entirely brown and gray, and a sepia-style filter was used that makes it even more colorless. Everything looks great up close but from far away it's all just boring and gray. I get they were going for a vintage look to the image, but they could have added a few splashes of color here and there to show off the great textures and lighting. Even the pre-level cutscenes are black and white photos. The second and third games looked much better simply because they were more colorful. Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Halo are both great examples of how vivid color can greatly enhance visuals.
While the gameplay mechanics are pretty solid, the game gets to feel pretty repetitive near the end. I wish they had gone for a few more setpieces to break up the gameplay some more. You get to be mowing down what feels like endless hordes of enemies for very little progress in the level. The guns were touted upon release as varied and creative, but in practice there's not much to them. Most of them are spray and pray automatic weapons, with a few little flairs thrown in. The Auger rifle that can shoot through walls is pretty cool. But they just don't give you enough ammo to enjoy the more exotic weapons. They could have done a lot more with the vehicle missions but they were all very simple A to B sections with very little scripting or interactivity. A fun distraction from the endless shooting but ultimately lacking excitement or substance. The real meat of the gameplay is the firefights, the atmosphere, and the neat setting and enemy design. This is a fun, somewhat scary game that was well built for the time and well suited to its hardware. It's a bit stale and bland compared to newer shooters but for the time it was pretty good. It can be gotten for dirt cheap now. A few bucks in good shape with the manual on Amazon. Totally worth the money.
Nostalgia'd hard. We all loved this game because back then it was basically all we had to play on the NoGaems 3. Multiplayer was an absolute glitch fest with many places to sneak into walls and troll the newbs, good times.

I love all the weapon types and run and gunning. I will admit the first playthrough is super hard without the second set of weapons, but gets better second run. I beat it on superhuman mode which was a thrill :>

I'm with you 100%. I got my PS3 years after its launch, and this game just seemed...a half-assed Halo clone. Give me some Killzone any day.
Resistance FoM was challenging, but very enjoyable. The difficulty spike is not too hard if you play cautiously.
Anyway, If you didnt like very much the first one, dont worry, you will love Resistance 3. Because is the most old school of the FPS genre on PS3 and the best of the series in my opinion

It's funny - while watching this review I've heard that it has "30 missions", and thought "That can't possibly be right, it's a shooter that was released as a ps3 launch title" but holy shit is this game long and packed. I just recently finished it and in my opinion it may be one of the best shooters I've ever played. 9/10 times I hate gunmetal-grey shooters with aliens - but this game is something else, i simply have nothing but praise for it.
I think you made an error saying that Sony shut down the multiplayer servers to Resistance in 2004, which would be 3 years before it released. It was 2014. Great video though. I own all 3 Resistance games, and I forgot how hard this one was.
The colour palette is very dreary and the areas are far more closed off than they appear, but the story of a lone soldier fighting for survival being reported in an almost myth like fashion was really good.
I liked the spider type enemies. I also liked the aliens in Crysis, the fast zombies in Half Life 2, etc. People are annoyed when in a game there is only one enemy type. CoD has only men who die in 2-3 shots with hit skin weapons. If in Resistance there would only be the aliens with the bullseye weapon and no other type, would you be happy? Or in Half Life 2 just with combine and nothing else?
I would go so far as calling statements like that hypocritical.
It's like saying i don't like bosses because they are different and harder, or i don't like Big Daddys from Bioshock for that matter. The enemy types are not always supposed to be "fun". They are an obstacle. I really enjoyed the aliens in crysis, especially after 2/3 of the game just with humans, i didn't like some of the headcrabs in Half Life, but i would rather have them in there than not. I think the only time i really hated an enemy type was the mutants in Far Cry, because the were just not fair.

i played those later. enjoyed the PS2 games but the PS3 R&C games didn't interest me as much
i literally spent 45 mins trying to beat the level at 3.44 this was a tough game to beat, but man is it satisfying when you do..
I agree alot with this review.
I mean Resistance is a okay shooter at best but the major problems with the games are bullet spongy enemies (say what you want about the grunts in half life, at least most of the time you don't kill them with an entire magazine) and the lack of bullets for the bad-ass weapons you get later down the line.
Also, I got my copy for 3 Euros.
also it was called the Bullseye because the secondary fire is the tracking dart and it makes the normal ammo fired lock on to enemies. You use it to fire around corners or hide and blind fire kills
I wound up playing the 3rd one first, then 2nd and this one last.
My FPS games I usually play on the default difficulty and this game made me put down the controller more than a few times on the first level, something that never happened to me before...
I know this is an old video, but I actually did enjoy fighting the flood in halo, the tiny balloons popping, setting off a chain-reaction...man that was great! (Could be nostalgia) ;)
I loved the challenge of this game, I'm sure now as a 30 year old I'd hate it as I wouldn't have the time to put into this game to complete it but man I did love this game.
get the sense that the low ammo, bullet sponges, accurate enemies and general difficulty was intentional as to make you feel like you are fighting against a much larger and stronger enemy, but I do think they really overdid it.

This era I had the Xbox 360 so I never played resistance until now in 2024. Imo it's an average to ok shooter. It doesn't hold a candle to halo 3 or Gears of war of that era and it's something you'll play once and forget.
This is for resistance 1. I have not played the others.
great review. The third game is one of my favourite shooters. where majority of the issues you've talked about here are gone in that game. Resistance 2 on the other hand sucks for me.
You showed Uncharted footage when you mentioned must play ps3 games. Personally I would take any of the Resistance games over any of the Uncharted games. Uncharted is a great series if you love shitty shooting mechanics mixed with hordes and hordes of enemies though.

+Gggmanlives I actually remember Resistance as having decent shooting for a console game. In Uncharted you could shoot an unarmored human with an AK-47 and he would shrug it off. Uncharted obviously has other things going for it though.
+Gggmanlives I didn't mind the enemies in the resistance trilogy, yeah they're hard, because they're not humans, yeah they take up so many bullets, but that's just because they're aliens. The shooting mechanics were not a huge problem compared to the uncharted, who would have thought an enemy in the uncharted game has a 100% throwing accuracy when it comes to chugging a grenade 100 ft away from you and just so happens to land directly right next to your feet? And yeah like resistance, uncharted enemies take up more bullets actually. i did 3 head shots on a guy when he had no protection...and got up and kept shooting. I don't mind the hordes of shooting in resistance and uncharted but at least resistance got the shooting and aiming mechanics right.

Finally smeone said that! Uncharted has extremelly shitty shooting mechanics, the guns feel like they are literally made of some dried out shit. I would say guns in Resistance feel heavy and old school. Also I think that Nathan Drake is an idiot, totally not a badass character. Yeah, I know this comment is around 1 year old.
One thing about the game is that cover is kinda bad- a stray round will reset the health regen. I like that enemies mostly use projectile weapons which are possible to dodge consistently.I feel very in control of what happens in the game for that reason, moreso than the other 2 in the series.
Also: headshots are a must for enemies to not feel too spongey.
JarekTheGamingDragon pretty much said a lot of what you did and people got really upset at his video lol. I wanted to get another opinion and after seeing you confirm the difficulty being BS and the level design being unfair etc I'd say that it's pretty true.
I'm surprised that you found this game hard. I'm thirteen years old, and it's rather easy to me. But then again, I've played every single level in obsessive repetition for so many years that I can tell you exactly which enemy types and how many will assault you around any corner were you to give me a screenshot. Anyway, great review.

WOW this is such a coincidence while i was playing i wanted to know what you thought about the game and now i typed it i see you uploaded it just a week a go.

I mean this was one of the VERY FEW games for the PS3 that I actually enjoyed and thought that it was legitimately full of effort, and was one of those games that I thought should be ported to PC.
All that had to be done was enable Mouse+Keyboard aiming, and a few modificational tweaks here and there and it would stand up well.
But Sony being Sony, they closed down the servers and wasted any potentual the game might have in the future.
It's trying to be the Half-Life 2 meets Halo of the Playstation, and it almost succeeded, especially Resistance 3, but it's just not that polished to stand up to them.
A wasted opportunity, much like E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy.

I have not played the game in years, so I don't know how it holds up especially with Resistance 2 and 3. I like the story of Resistance, but I like alternate history stories to an extant. I would have to say Resistance 2 is my least favorite, my favorite Resistance might be 3. I think people loved it so much was the Insomniac name. They made Ratchet and Clank games.
It probably doesn't mean much but you just earned yourself a new subscriber. And reminded me why I gave up on this game shortly after launch.
Co-op campaign was what made this game standout to me.
