Totally agree. Insomniac make the best guns in videogames. No other developers even come close. And just like Ratchet and Clank, you can keep all your guns in Resistance 3. All shooters should be like that.

Every boss must be a whole town of people transformed in a spider thing. The first had had crazy images of captured people. Depends on the person but I find it scary

TheGameDeviant just get killzone 2 , I got it a week ago for 5 bucks and it's one of the most fun and challenging campaigns I've played in quite some time, even mp is still active afaik haven't tried so far though...also was quite amazed how good it still looks in 2017
Yeah that would be awesome. I also really want to hear him ranting about the often times cheapness of enemy placement and the goddamn grenades. Those who played the game know what I mean. I love the games though, the first one is a classic in my opinion
The Resistance series does hold a small place in my heart, mostly because it was the first game I played on the PS3 and R3 is definitely the best in the series.
I really liked Resistance 2, the feeling of scorched earth military doctrine being applied as the Chimera won battle by battle and the use of WWII/futuritic setting was amazing imo
I personally enjoyed Resistance 3 more than any Halo game, and Fall of Man just as much as Halo 2 (my favorite from that series). The fact R3 even comes close HL2 in my mind makes it among my favorite shooters of all time.
The NES was my first console as an 11 year old in 1988, and throughout my experience with video games (which has been filled with many periods of absolute disinterest, to periods of geeky all encompassing fandom), the PS3 has emerged as my favorite console. I found your channel recently and have been going back through your catalog, especially reviews of games on the PS3. Your assessment of the Resistance Trilogy is spot on and I'm really enjoying going back through these games in memory. The game ran in a hideous sub HD resolution of 960×704 at ~25fps thats why it was able to pump out these graphics and also why he commented it looked blury
I've played the full campaign for all 3 which I still have. I love the series despite whatever flaws and found a lot of enjoyment! It would be phenomenal if done correctly to have either remasters or Resistance 4 on current consoles! Thanks for your review! Brings back good memories from R3 and the trilogy!!
The original Resistance was actually going to be set in World War 1 instead of 2, which I think personally would have been a lot more interesting since WW2 is so played out in video games. I think WW1 technology is also very interesting, especially in contrast with very advanced alien technology.

i played this series when i was five alongside mw2 (which would explain my interest in the world of firearms and military technology at a young age) and i loved it, it was a series that i didnt understand but so vividly remember. but when i got older and dug up this series from the drawers all those memories came back and i made a few new ones too, i introduced this series to my best bud and we had some of the best times of our life. from laughing at our mistakes, shitting ourselves when we got jumpscared, yelling at each other in panic, and arguing on who gets to drive the vehicles. even today in 2020 we still play every now and again and we bring some new friends and watch and teach them. no matter what ill always love this series to death.
You should have noted that the game has Move and Sharpshooter support. Although not many own those plastic peripherals it works reall well and spices things up.
i actually agree that this is the worst of the 3. It has shinier, flashier graphics and better sound design than Resistance 2, but the gameplay is so bland, and it was way too easy. this guy honestly just sucks at fps games if he thinks this is the best one.
I would never understand people liking the second game. It was generic then (CoD clone) and even in its own series, and was barely enjoyable with the coop mode (Even Insomniac said they should't have listen to the fans for the sequel). Resistence 3, while short, was a massive improvement.
I never understood why they didn't make a Resistance sidestory game for PS4 like they did for the PSP and the Vita. Something with the gameplay like 3 set elsewhere in the world on PS4 could have been a lot of fun IMO.
Yeah that would have been cool, gauge interest in having it return. I think it would have done a lot better if the multiplayer mode was more refined, that's what everyone was interested in back then so it would have kept more people playing. I enjoyed it personally but it definitely wasn't as crisp as the likes of CoD.

Great review as usual and I am glad to say that I agree with you on most points. Resistance 3 is really, in gameplay terms, what the series should have been from the start with solid visuals, great gameplay and a split screen co-op campaign (this was missing from the second game). However I do have to disagree on 1 point and that is the "pushing the console to it's limits" remark. As far as shooters go, Killzone 2 and 3 (the latter of which also had split-screen campaign co-op) easily trump Resistance 3 in the visuals department. For me Resistance 3 will always be the best of the 3. The first's lifeless environments and mundane combat killed it for me. But thank you for these. If you can do more reviews like this (Uncharted trilogy, Killzone 2 and 3 etc) it'd be great.
This game runs on sub-HD resolution unlike first two games, that's why it's blurry. I think the game really deserves an HD remaster on PS4. PS3 can't handle it, there's too many performance issues and noticeable textures streaming, but production qualities and the game itself is really great.
I'm glad you liked this game so much. It's definitely the best in the series and one of the best console shooters I've played. The excellent pacing and superior story is mainly what puts it above then first game for me. I'd say it's the second best PS 3 exclusive, after Demon's Souls.
R3 is great for sure but if you go back and play them all R1 stands the test of time the best. R3 evolved the art direction and story incredibly well but the actual core gunplay is significantly watered down. The enemy ai is basically broken... R1 has ruthless enemy ai, buttery smooth framerate, and allows for much more player freedom during gameplay. R3 is almost like a reboot and is much more story focused which is cool for sure, but that sort of game has a much shorter shelf life.
Just reading through the comments. Many people really complain about FPS games & gamepad to be inferior to keyboard & mouse. But I believe that many never really tried to get used to it.
Gggmanlives Most early FPS games on consoles used shoulder buttons for sidestepping & up/downward look & that can be tricky if one is not used to it. Most of the distrust might be connected to that I suppose? Just saying that it's easier to control FPS nowadays with the default twin stick movements. And it also is easier to get used to I think.

Steven Cropper I prefer using KB&M myself. After all I started playing games on a PC. But I believe it depends on the player & experience what feels better for anyone. I just can say that I have no problems with both due to above mentioned experience. I'm glad every gamer is different ;)

Doesn't the PS3 run in interlaced mode as well? I remember the PS3 being capable of 1080i was touted as being a big step up from 720p visuals because affordable 1080p tvs were still a couple years away.
I think Resistance 3 is one of the best Singeplayer Shooter of the last generation. Funny weapons, great Pacing and an interesting story. The only bad thing is the awful endfight. You could review the two Spin-ofs for the PSP and Vita ;)
This game is fucking tough, even on normal. I was on split screen and I died at least 5 times when you first meet the rage gorilla and I'm stuck on the level where you have to protect the civilian.
I terms of trilogies, the Metroid Prime Trilogy is one of the best hands down, along with Halo. For some reason I stopped partway through Resistance 1 & 2, so I never had an interest in Resistance 3. Good to see that it at least ended with a bang.
The sequence in the tunnels with the grims almost ruined the game for me, but replaying it again it's not as dragged out as I once thought it was, great game and great review
It's funny because I always thought that this game was far better than the other two, that and it was the first of the games where I didn't feel like it was a chore to churn through the game and the multiplayer (at the time) was much better than the previous two. Yet people bashed this game and praised the other two (especially the first one) over this and I never understood why. It must be them rose tinted glasses on people!
The mainline Resistance games have a weird feeling arc. It's like the series goes from something like CoD in Resistance 1-2 to Half-Life 2 with this last entry. I guess you might say it's Insomniac's road through FPS game development, where they try new things from other games.
I remember liking this game the best of the trilogy, but I also remember the game royally screwing up my hard drive when I attempted to delete its game data to make space.
My friend gave me his cd and my ps3 is still working. My only problem is that the screen blinks ehite for s few frames when receiving a health item. I'm slready shooting piss bullets from bullseye and noe it's gonna make me blind from all the pew pews of the alien guns. Good game so far im in chapt 8.
The way the health system changed in each game was not design error between them nor it copying cod in number 2 they did it on purpose it was to show the level of infection the character has the stronger the infection became the more powerful you got in the second one it is saying it has gotten so bad that your limited regeneration has become so advanced that you could now fully regenerate and the third losing the healing of the first and second is showing that the character you are playing is cured and not being infected means you won't be healing like you did as the infected character from the first two.
R2 was pretty disappointing, but I loved the multiplayer co-op thing they did. Almost felt like an mmo. R3 is definitely the better game all around though.
Honestly loved R3. The guns were so much fun and I actually liked the mission where you had to carry the power core and can't use weapons. I found it fun and strategic
What about Killzone and the rest of the Halo games? i think if you cover those franchises fully i think you're done with last generation exclusives, at least as far as shooters go.
I made the mistake of playing the third one first and then trying to go back and play the other two. It's hard bc the third campaign is so tight and great
The videogame version of The Road, in a lot of ways. Such an underappreciated gem, this one. Definitely one of my favourites from the PS3 era. Really wish Resistance 2 had never happened, that game did so much damage to the franchise that this one ended up not getting the attention it deserved.
2:20 - Son, not daughter. I've been a fan of Insomniac since I was a kid, but I don't follow anything blindly. The first two games were so forgettable that I can't genuinely can't remember how difficult/easy they were. The first game was mired by a nigh incessant gray and brown color pallet, the second was *way* better on that front but also had an uncanny-valley effect on me. The military setting was rooted in the fact that humanity was still on its feet, and pushing back, but even something like Crysis 2 found time to show the effects on civilian populations so I'd say gmanlives has a valid point there. Resistance 3 had some big improvements, and I definitely agree with the majority of gmanlives' statements. Personally, I found the visuals in gameplay great, but the facial animations in cutscenes to be distractingly stiff. I never had a problem with the mobs of Grims (the zombie-type enemies) and making the Goliaths invincible really made the moments when they were present a lot more tense than in the second game where I believe they were capable of being felled. The weapon leveling system makes no logical sense, but is incredibly fun from a gameplay perspective so who really cares. The co-op achievements being impossible hurts the completionist in me but is hardly intolerable. And the loss of multiplayer is something of an inevitability for console games. *HOWEVER,* the one thing I do *NOT* accept is the bullshit means of unlocking extra content such as cheats and behind the scenes videos. You're given a kind of currency in the game that can be used to purchase some of those aforementioned rewards, which can be done in a variety of ways, but most of them are *IMPOSSIBLE* due to the online components and a separate browser game becoming inaccessible. This would be merely a great annoyance were it not for the fact that you *cannot* grind for more of this currency by just completing the campaign over and over again. Plus, *because* the currency is finite, just to add insult to injury, if you happen to unlock something that you didn't want, you're stuck with it. Forever. The only way to get something different is to delete *ALL* your save data, replay the game to acquire the currency, and then buy something else. I just wish that once it became clear that it would be impossible to access all the content following the shutdown of servers and the browser game that Insomniac would've created a patch that would balance the currency for offline play, or at the bare minimum, just do away with it entirely and unlock everything after beating the game.

the only thing i hated about this game was how criminally short it was. amazing weapons and gameplay, easily one of the best single player shooter campaigns i played on the ps3.

I love the colour palette they chose for this game. Rustic and weathered really matches the hopelessness you feel when being immersed in this world.

The third game was released when developers were discovering that consoles could render more than one color.

R3 runs at 960x704 which is why it looks blurry. The previous game were 1280x704:

Doesn't the PS3 run in interlaced mode as well? I remember the PS3 being capable of 1080i was touted as being a big step up from 720p visuals because affordable 1080p tvs were still a couple years away.

No
It will do 480p,720p and 1080p. If you have a 1080i TV it will send interlaced.

I think Resistance 3 is one of the best Singeplayer Shooter of the last generation. Funny weapons, great Pacing and an interesting story. The only bad thing is the awful endfight. You could review the two Spin-ofs for the PSP and Vita ;)
This game is fucking tough, even on normal. I was on split screen and I died at least 5 times when you first meet the rage gorilla and I'm stuck on the level where you have to protect the civilian.
I terms of trilogies, the Metroid Prime Trilogy is one of the best hands down, along with Halo.
For some reason I stopped partway through Resistance 1 & 2, so I never had an interest in Resistance 3. Good to see that it at least ended with a bang.
The sequence in the tunnels with the grims almost ruined the game for me, but replaying it again it's not as dragged out as I once thought it was, great game and great review

It's funny because I always thought that this game was far better than the other two, that and it was the first of the games where I didn't feel like it was a chore to churn through the game and the multiplayer (at the time) was much better than the previous two.
Yet people bashed this game and praised the other two (especially the first one) over this and I never understood why.
It must be them rose tinted glasses on people!

That said, FO1 & 2 will always hold special place in my heart.
The mainline Resistance games have a weird feeling arc. It's like the series goes from something like CoD in Resistance 1-2 to Half-Life 2 with this last entry. I guess you might say it's Insomniac's road through FPS game development, where they try new things from other games.
Alternate reality is bloody right. Look at the map at 0:42 Yugoslavia is already divided.

The reason resistance 3 looks blurry is it runs below 720p like the other 2 games. It runs at 960x544 or 960x560

Yeah the online multiplayer was so grainy, I couldn't get on with it because of the blurr, it was a fun online experience which is annoying.
The game was designed with 3D in mind so maybe that's why?

I remember liking this game the best of the trilogy, but I also remember the game royally screwing up my hard drive when I attempted to delete its game data to make space.

I loved this game
The best looking and best playing game in the series. I just can't believe how underrated this is!
My friend gave me his cd and my ps3 is still working. My only problem is that the screen blinks ehite for s few frames when receiving a health item. I'm slready shooting piss bullets from bullseye and noe it's gonna make me blind from all the pew pews of the alien guns. Good game so far im in chapt 8.
The way the health system changed in each game was not design error between them nor it copying cod in number 2 they did it on purpose it was to show the level of infection the character has the stronger the infection became the more powerful you got in the second one it is saying it has gotten so bad that your limited regeneration has become so advanced that you could now fully regenerate and the third losing the healing of the first and second is showing that the character you are playing is cured and not being infected means you won't be healing like you did as the infected character from the first two.
According to Digital Foundry the game runs in 960x704. This would be the reason for the blurry looking image.
R2 was pretty disappointing, but I loved the multiplayer co-op thing they did. Almost felt like an mmo. R3 is definitely the better game all around though.

Honestly loved R3. The guns were so much fun and I actually liked the mission where you had to carry the power core and can't use weapons. I found it fun and strategic
What about Killzone and the rest of the Halo games? i think if you cover those franchises fully i think you're done with last generation exclusives, at least as far as shooters go.

I made the mistake of playing the third one first and then trying to go back and play the other two. It's hard bc the third campaign is so tight and great

The videogame version of The Road, in a lot of ways. Such an underappreciated gem, this one. Definitely one of my favourites from the PS3 era. Really wish Resistance 2 had never happened, that game did so much damage to the franchise that this one ended up not getting the attention it deserved.

I've been a fan of Insomniac since I was a kid, but I don't follow anything blindly. The first two games were so forgettable that I can't genuinely can't remember how difficult/easy they were. The first game was mired by a nigh incessant gray and brown color pallet, the second was *way* better on that front but also had an uncanny-valley effect on me. The military setting was rooted in the fact that humanity was still on its feet, and pushing back, but even something like Crysis 2 found time to show the effects on civilian populations so I'd say gmanlives has a valid point there.
Resistance 3 had some big improvements, and I definitely agree with the majority of gmanlives' statements. Personally, I found the visuals in gameplay great, but the facial animations in cutscenes to be distractingly stiff. I never had a problem with the mobs of Grims (the zombie-type enemies) and making the Goliaths invincible really made the moments when they were present a lot more tense than in the second game where I believe they were capable of being felled.
The weapon leveling system makes no logical sense, but is incredibly fun from a gameplay perspective so who really cares. The co-op achievements being impossible hurts the completionist in me but is hardly intolerable. And the loss of multiplayer is something of an inevitability for console games. *HOWEVER,* the one thing I do *NOT* accept is the bullshit means of unlocking extra content such as cheats and behind the scenes videos. You're given a kind of currency in the game that can be used to purchase some of those aforementioned rewards, which can be done in a variety of ways, but most of them are *IMPOSSIBLE* due to the online components and a separate browser game becoming inaccessible. This would be merely a great annoyance were it not for the fact that you *cannot* grind for more of this currency by just completing the campaign over and over again. Plus, *because* the currency is finite, just to add insult to injury, if you happen to unlock something that you didn't want, you're stuck with it. Forever. The only way to get something different is to delete *ALL* your save data, replay the game to acquire the currency, and then buy something else.
I just wish that once it became clear that it would be impossible to access all the content following the shutdown of servers and the browser game that Insomniac would've created a patch that would balance the currency for offline play, or at the bare minimum, just do away with it entirely and unlock everything after beating the game.

Not gonna lie this was one of the best game series sure there’s issues and needed single player fixes but it was up in the top 50 best game series
