I think a lot of you will agree, this isn't overlanding. But I know a lot of internet types will say it is... and a past version of me may be guilty of it too.
Haters gon hate. Keep doing what you do, and the viewers you want will follow! Anybody who wants to truly be apart of the “overland” community will support any kind of overlanding regardless of vehicle type, capabilities, or road type. 💯
Was it an adventure and fun? If so it doesn't matter. Suddenly alot of TH-camrs are getting really uppity about roughing it properly. If you look into overlandings history nothing today is even close to what it originally was.
@@jace733 I agree... to the extent that we are not renaming an activity that already exists. I think driving my GTI and camping at National Parks is not overlanding. That's a roadtrip. If you don't leave pavement, there is already a name for that, and renaming it is just a marketing exercise. There is a wide definition of "overlanding" and being a stickler for mileage, nights, distance from a gas station, roughness of the terrain, etc. is silly to me. But just as I wouldn't say I take my GTI "jeeping" because I drive on a dirt road, I think terms do matter to an extent.
Agree, the crowds just continue to grow, and camp sites are hard to come by. Regardless, it is great to get outside and enjoy what we can, overlanding or not.
Why is everyone complaining about the crowds. It’s cool to see people out and about and enjoying nature after a year of being locked down. Why the snob approach, if you want to be alone leave your truck and hike deep in the woods. You wouldn’t like it if people made snarky remarks about overweight folks not being able to hike 10 miles in and so they aren’t real outdoors folks. Why because people are too busy enjoying nature at whatever capability is comfortable to them.
I agree. I see a ton of vehicles at trailheads and overlooks, but backpacking has not taken off like overlanding and road tripping. Walk 4 or 5 miles, and you'll be alone.
Wife in the background swatting bugs during tent talk👍🏻😂😂 Good little video, I don’t know whether to be happy to see so many people out or sad that the parks are choked with people. My first trip to Yellowstone was in 1965.....I was 6wks old and Grandpa’s new little buddy, so of course, he took me fishing.
Justin is the Peter McKinnon of Overlanding/Car Camping. I gotta say the composition of his b roll during the entirety of the vlog is really spot on. Glad I found your channel man!
Just a few weeks ago we did a road trip up to Montana, down to Yellowstone and through Teton, camping the whole way in a Roofnest Condor. Used OnX the whole way and would find national forest roads to camp on. 3,600 miles of awesome. And it also wasn't overlanding. We did do Black Tail Wild Bill and Monument Ridge (and Fins 'n' Things in Moab on the way through) but it was a road trip. Eventually I want to plan a multi day overlanding trip which will be mostly off-road. We had the same experience at Yellowstone. Did Prismatic early enough that it wasn't too packed, but everything else was completely packed out. We ended up staying in a room in Snow Lodge for the night because we didn't realize there was no "find a spot and camp" in a national park.
That's nuts! I cancelled plans for Yellowstone/Grans Tetons for the beginning go July fearing the overcrowding. Still, so beautiful though. And nothing wrong with a road trip
Solid video. Im a photographer/filmmaker getting into backcountry video and I currently have a trd sport. The local group has given me a $6000 list of upgrades needed to get out on the trails and its kept me in the driveway. Im not trying to do the Rubicon trail I just wanna get out in the woods with my camera.
Enjoyed this Justin. Keep doing the overland or whatever you're doing thing. You're fortunate to get to visit these areas often. I've only been able to visit Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons once and was amazed by their beauty and splendor.
Yup marketing and power point people making a Buck…. Then you have the gate keepers who say you are not doing A because you are not doing B or have C….Pretty lame, just get out and ride and adventure
No doubt about the crazy uptick in ppl doing things at established and 'primitive' campgrounds, particularly in National Parks, thats been my expereince here in utah. Luckily taking 4x4 roads and backcountry sites can still be a refuge.
Just got back home from Ouray, Co completed Ophir pass, corkscrew pass and engineer pass seen tons of camp spots.. luckily arrived before all the tourists
I can’t find your video about direct mounting the GFC to a Rhino Rack mount on a Wrangler. Any links you can send about how to do that would be appreciated.
We were there this time last year, looks like covid or no covid Yellowstone is always going to be busy haha. But we agree, the grand Tetons is our favorite place to date. Those mountains are just amazing to look at.
@@JustinBMcBride it was very cool! It was our first time out there. It was only 85 degrees up top, but it was about 110 down in the canyon so we just walked around the rim trail. We also went out to hike in Sedona one day and it was crazy pretty.
Was your trip to Yellowstone on a weekend? I’ve been to a half dozen National Parks this year and have had no crowding problems during week days. Weekends have been miserable. Love the channel!

While I think you had a great adventure, is it overlanding? I don't think I care. Sure you encountered the overpopulation of the earth, but it's a fact and you can't really avoid it.

More crowds mean more people are enjoying the outdoors, which means more parks for everyone in the end.
And I would rather humans crowd to watch Old Faithful than to go to shopping

Apparently I've been "overlanding" for a few decades now but it's still just car camping as far as I'm concerned.
My wife and I went there at the end of last August and it was amazing. We will definitely go back again.
No doubt about the crazy uptick in ppl doing things at established and 'primitive' campgrounds, particularly in National Parks, thats been my expereince here in utah. Luckily taking 4x4 roads and backcountry sites can still be a refuge.
This just shows the need for more national parks that are accessible
Thanks for hanging out! :)
The reservations, traffic, crowds, noise, expense... makes me wonder what the point is any more.
We visit Tetons and Yellowstone every year and I have never seen it like this. Even when there were tour busses dropping of heaps of people.

The only part of the video that wasn’t “overlanding” was the boat trip because everything else was over land 😉

You’re right you Jeep totally looks orange through the camera! I haven’t noticed it much until this video.
Justin, loving this. I can understand the frustration of being in crowds. Good score on the two 1 night accommodations.
Was hoping for a little footage of your boat cruise. Maybe we’ll get a little bit on your next voyage. Thanks for the video!
May I ask what tent that is? It fits that jeep wonderfully.
I think is't a "GoFast Camper". Nice little American company.
What tent do you have ? Thank you and great video.
Went to the Grand Canyon last week and luckily it wasn’t crazy busy like that. It was certainly crowded, but not shoulder to shoulder anywhere.
Good to know! That’s on the list for this summer some time.

Most of overlandering is on paved roads. Unless you have dirt trails from your house to your campsite you will mostly be on paved roads.
If you ever make it to Hood River OR I will make sure you get some huckleberry ice cream from Mike's ice cream.
