- This is it, my long awaited series, Sagebrush and Salt Flats where I take a 650 mile overland trip along the historic Pony Express trail in the dead of winter through the west Desert of Utah and into Nevada. In making this series it is my goal to inspire you to find overland routes, like the Pony Express, to challenge you and introduce you to the rich history of our own nation.

Wow this is awesome. I ran the Pony Express from Sacramento to Austin, NV two years ago, had a blast. I want to do it again from Utah to CA. Plan a big overland trip. I'm with Off-Road Overland Camping on Facebook.
Utah to California is awesome. I’m definitely going to have to do this again, but in the summer.

I'm based out of Orange County, CA. Have the starting point at Fort Churchill or end there. I have about 900 followers and am also on Overland Bound. Where are you based out of?

@@JustinBMcBride LOL. I'd put a limit on the amount of people who can go. You'd be lucky to get 10 to 15 rigs to go because of the time factor. We do it all the time, it's easy.

Hi Justin, I hope your doing well. I'm putting together a trip to do the Pony Express from Fort Churchhill to Salk Lake City, UT, in Sept. Since you've done this trail, you may know the best time of year to go. Let me know. I'm planning on have 5 to 10 rigs.
Fall is a great time. I was just out there last week and the valleys are flooded from the insane snow melt this year.

Yeah that’s my route they used! 👍🏻 I planned that trip but unfortunately couldn’t make it, so I passed the route on to Mateo and Ken while I had to stay behind and figure out some mechanical issues. Bummed I couldn’t make it happen last summer, but stoked to finally have it done!

Great video Justin! Quick question about GAIA: when you make your own track, how can you tell how far you are from your current location to another waypoint? I’ve tried taking a piece of string to trace the distance and match it up to the key. Not only is that super time consuming but its also not very accurate for me. Thanks man!
It’s a little weird, and there may be a better way, but I just draw a quick route to it. I’m sure there is a real way to do it. I’ll look into that before dropping my next GPS video. 👊🏻
@@JustinBMcBride that would be awesome!! My specific problem is when I’m already on an existing track. I’ll be in the middle of a track while doing sections of the TAT but will get tired and try to estimate my time to my next waypoint. I have no idea how to do that bc I think adding a “route” tries to put you on roads and doesn’t necessarily follow the “track” that’s already created. Maybe I’m just overlooking something? How much total fuel do you have? Auxiliary tanks? Jerry cans?
Between the main tank and auxiliary I have 38 gallons total.
My son and I are thinking of doing the trek from Utah Lake to Wendover in a few weeks in my stock Gladiator Mojave. We’ve talked about driving it all in a day and staying in Wendover that night. I’m a novice off-roader. Any tips?
The Utah portion is easy. Camp at Simpson springs instead of Wendover!
What do you use for navigation?
For this route I used onX Offroad, but I also use Gaia!

Love the quality of the video and edit, but sorry I just don’t see the fun or joy in riding a 500 mile fire road. If I’m going to spend time away from my family the juice needs to be worth the squeeze.
That’s cool amigo. We all have different tastes. Utah definitely keeps the trail well maintained, but Nevada not so much.
