  • The PWC "Motor Hour" Myth - And How to Extend Your PWC's Life

    Low hours don't necessarily mean a better PWC. In this video, we're debunking the "Motor Hour" myth and discussing how to extend the life of your watercraft.
    When I was looking at purchasing my first PWC, I made a decision to buy second hand to see how I liked the sport. I didn't know much about the available brands and went down the general thinking that low engine hours would equate to better value. It was confusing however seeing some of the lowest hour units listed for sale also seemingly having had the same maintenance- or more - than much higher hours units.What gives?
    I spoke at that time to my local Yamaha PWC dealer and they said that a well used PWC is likely to be in better condition that one that has had little use given all other factors being equal. I didn't really understand why. For my first ski ,I decided on a 9 month old unit Yamaha VX with 65 hours. When the reported average usage of recreational ski is apparently 25 hrs per year, this seemed higher than normal. But the ski turned out to be perfect, never let me down, and I added another 400 hrs to it within 2 years of fishing. My last PWC, a Yamaha FXHO that I purchased from new, had no maintenance issues even after 730hrs of use.
    So why would heavy use equate to a longer life? Patrick O'Keeffe from Shoreline Jetskis explains why in this video, and shows us a new modification that he supplies to give your PWC the best chance of a very long life.

    I've put 500hrs. on my Seadoo 155, and run it at least once a week. Still runs same top speed as when I purchased it. All I do is change the oil / filter, and keep the pump bearing greased up. I'm shooting for 1000, or more hours, for bragging rights.

      The more you use them the longer they last! Thanks for watching.

    Very great information on this preventative measure. I just wish it was something previously installed by Sea Doo, because I am no where near any kind of a mechanic, and therefore I will have to remember to ask the dealership about it and to install it.

    • @Jetcast
      @Jetcast  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's quite simple to install if you want to attempt it yourself. I expect that Shoreline would be selling the kit with some instructions, so you just need some tools to remove the temperature sensor, attached the inline unit, and mount the nozzle.

    I have a 2020 yamaha fsh 190 w/ a 1.8L ho.
    It was 1 yr old w/ 13 hours when i bought it. Since then, i have racked up 180 hrs on it. That is about 80 hours per summer. It's been a great engine.

    I sold my Jet Skis at 50 hours because everyone said the value drops way down after that and we weren't using them much. I know I was told to fog them after use when I bought them at the Yamaha dealer but it was never explained why so after a few rides and cleans we just stopped doing it. Now that I've seen this video, it makes sense why it should be done, ty.

      I guess only the best mechanics are going to let you know how to prolong the life of your motor. As a person who racks up high motor hours by fishing, I was always concerned about the idea that a well used ski would have low resale value. I think I've debunked the idea that these motors don't last as my last ski, the 2019 FXHO, had 730 hrs on it when I sold it. It really was still going strongly and had no issues according the report at the last service. It seldom went without a good run for longer than 2 weeks, so that probably accounted for it being still in great condition. Plus I was always meticulous in the cleaning and flushing regime I guess.

      I have two boats now, one for offshore and one for inshore and honestly, I miss the waverunners. They were much less work and I was never worried about using them in bad weather. On the contrary actually, My daughter and I would hope for storms so we could go surf the waves with them. The issue I had was I have more free time than she does and we had a dual trailer. I had to dunk both skis to ride one when she was busy and I didn't like leaving one sitting at the boat ramp parking lot. I also didn't like cleaning two when I rode one. Love your channel, ty for the reply!

    This accessory looks great. It's a shame they don't have an ordering system online. I probably won't order them until I can do it through a system. I've had my credit card stolen before by giving the numbers to employees to manually process before.

    Hi Paul. Great video. So once it’s installed does the modification stay connected to the engine. For easy use of the fogging spray. Or is it something that you need to connect and disconnect after every long term storage. I hope that makes sense. Regards Shane

    • @Jetcast
      @Jetcast  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Thanks. Yes it stays on the ski. You use it only when required: when you’re not going to use your ski for 3 weeks or longer . It’s kinda like what they do in very cold climates for “winterising” but in temperate and tropical climates is useful for periods when you can’t get out on the water.

    • @GippslandWaveRunner

      @@Jetcast thanks heaps Paul. Please more of these modification videos. They are great. Also when you get the new ski to do a video of how you launch and exit a boat ramp. How you dry blow out the water after exiting at the ramp would be great. Cheers Shane

    You can also remove the plugs and spray down the plug holes.

    • @Jetcast
      @Jetcast  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sure. This mod however is for the average punter to be able to keep the ski in top condition between a few weeks of being unable to ride. As Patrick said in the video, deterioration due to moisture coming back into the engine is the issue he’s trying to solve and this offers a quick and simple solution for owners. I would hate to have to remove plugs each time. It would rarely get done! :)

    Hi Paul. Do you only fill up with Unleaded 91 (94) E10. Its the green colour. It’s so confusing at the pump.

    • @Jetcast
      @Jetcast  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I use 91 only. But after watching some engineering videos I am probably happy to use E10 if its cheaper. Last time I looked the E94 was more expensive. The idea of using ethanol I thought was to reduce the use of oil and keep the price down.

    And always get low offers when I’m selling them. They always complain about the hours,
    I try to explain to them that it’s being used every summer it’s actually a good thing.
